DURING THAT SUMMER

Maxwell’s POV

High school ended just a few days ago. Finally, after 12 long grueling years, school is over. That is, until college comes.

During this month’s hot summer day, I pondered how much longer my life will have to retain the cycle of attending classes. Surely life is more than attending lectures, right? If there is, I’ve yet to find it.

I am all alone in our small town. Pretty much everyone left after graduation to move to their new colleges. I said goodbye too many times. All my friends are gone, living their new lives while I’m stuck here. I really have nothing to do. I wanted to hang out with my friends this summer before everything changes. But those plans were cut short.

You’re probably wondering what am I still doing here? Well, I’m scared. The idea that I’ll be leaving everything behind and going to a new city with new people and new experiences scared the living crap out of me. So I’m staying here during the summer. I should probably move so I can become adjusted to the new city.

“Max, why don’t you go out today?” My mom said, I groaned and stuffed my face onto my pillow.

“Ughhh, why mom? There’s nothing to do! All my friends are gone! And it’s hot!!” I said.

“It’ll be nice for you to go outside. You can’t stay in here all summer. Please?” Mom pleaded. Gosh! She always knows how to make me feel bad.

“Fine! At least give me money.” I said. Mom giggled to herself and handed me $50. Not bad.

I fixed myself in the mirror, styling my brown curls. My tan skin was matched with small freckles that littered my face. I had no idea why I was fixing myself so well. I don’t even put this much effort when going to Sunday church.

“Bye mom!” I screamed. I ran outside and got on my bike. The heat burned my ass a bit. I hopped on and began riding down the dirt path. The pebbles shook my bike.

Pastel fields of wheat bristled in the cool summer breeze. Among the fields of gold was the occasional hut, containing people who like me are questioning the immense size of the earth and the opportunities we may never get to have.

I rode my bike into the small town center. I drove past families who were out on the town.

“Hey Max!” Mr. Erikson said to me as I drove past his flower shop. He was a really nice man.

I stopped in front of the ice cream parlor that our town has. There’s a few here but this, Freezey’s, is my favorite. I especially love their hazelnut ice cream. It’s nutty, it’s creamy, it’s perfect!

I parked my bike on the bike racks and entered the cold store. A small ring resounded from the entrance through the parlor.

The store was neatly organized. It reminded me of a 1950’s diner. There was another family here. Their giggles filled my heart.

“Maxwell. How are you today?” Richard asked me. He went to the same school as me and graduated a year earlier. He works at the parlor since his father owns it. It means I get discounts since we’re kinda close.

“Pretty good. Mom forced me to go outside today.” I said.

“When are you moving to college?” He asked.

“Mmm, probably in August, before school starts.” I said. I ordered my favorite, hazelnut. God this is amazing!

After paying my half-off price, I sat next to the window with the cup in hand. I ate my ice cream and scrolled through my phone. I checked my friends’ Instagram stories and saw some of them on the beach or in cafes with people I’ve never seen.

The bell rang, signifying that someone entered. I was faced away from the door so I couldn’t see who it was.

“Yo! Bryce! How you been?” Richard said to whoever walked in.

“Doin’ good. Just being here and there.” The customer said. I couldn’t help but feel like I knew his voice. Do I know a Bryce?

“What will you be having, captain?” Richard’s voice said. Captain?

“Lemme get hazelnut.” He said. I don’t know who this Bryce guy is, but he sure has good taste.

“Here you go. Half-off for our champion!” Rich said. I wanted to turn around but I didn’t want to seem nosy. It was quiet until I heard footsteps get closer to me.

“Maxwell?” Bryce said. I looked up.

“Oh fuck!” I said. It was Bryce Madden.

2. A Deal

Bryce’s POV

“No, Cindy. I’m not buying you anything. All you do is waste my money! God!” I yelled. All I said was I was going out to buy food ‘cause I’m hungry. Then here goes this leech who always demands stuff. I swear she’s so needy. Fuck ten-year olds!

“DAD! BRYCE ISN’T GOING TO BUY ME ICE CREAM!” She yells.

“So? It’s his money. You got your own money too. Don’t be stingy.” Dad said. I nodded and thanked him while Cindy pouted and colored her horribly but adorably made drawing.

I left the house and went to my bike. It’s been a while since I rode this bad boy.

Oh, where are my manners? Hi, I’m Bryce Madden. Star quarterback of my high school. I graduated a few days ago. I’m just staying here for a while until dad is able to go back to work. I got a football scholarship to Ohio State University.

I hopped on my bike, thankful it didn’t collapse. I began biking down the dirt paths. Our house was located a bit away from the town center. Personally, I love it. It’s like we have our own little world.

“SUP, BRYCE!” Someone yelled. I don’t know many people, which is shocking because everyone knows me. I won the state championship a while back, which is how I got into Ohio State. Needless to say, I have a good reputation around town.

I pulled up to Freezey’s, my guilty pleasure. I’ve always enjoyed this place. It wasn’t as busy as the other ice cream places because it’s located a bit farther from the center of town. Not to mention, Richard, who works the counter, gives me discounts since I’m on the football team.

I entered the parlor and was met with cold. It felt nice compared to the sweltering heat outside. I saw a family eating and another person facing away from me. I was greeted with Richard and got my favorite flavor, hazelnut.

I can’t explain it. It just tastes so amazing. I like it, no, love it, so much!

As I was preparing to walk out, I saw the guy sitting in the seat earlier. He looked familiar. Upon closer look, I knew exactly who this was.

“Maxwell?” I said. He turned and saw me, his eyes widening.

“Oh fuck.” He said. His spoon fell in his ice cream cup.

“Do you mind if I sit here?” I asked him, pointing to the seat in front of him. He hesitantly nodded, a blush forming on his face. Interesting.

I sat in the seat opposite from him. This here, ladies and gentlemen, is Maxwell Knox. Super genius valedictorian. The brightest at our school. Maxwell and I never talked to each other. Our school didn’t have that cliche high school hierarchy system. But rather we never spoke because we just didn’t have anything in common.

“So, how’s your summer so far?” I started off.

“Oh um, it’s okay. Rather a little lonely.” He said. He then became quiet again.

“You got hazelnut?” I said, motioning for his cup.

“Yeah. It’s my favorite. Can’t go wrong with it.” He said, smiling a bit.

“Exactly. Hazelnut’s my favorite too! Shit’s amazing!” I said. I think we might be forming something here.

“Why are you still here? Don’t you have a scholarship to Indiana or Illinois?” He said.

“Ohio. And yeah, I do. But I’m sticking around until August and then I’ll leave.” I added. “What about you? Aren’t you supposed to be in New York?” I laughed.

“Yeah but I kinda wanna stay here before I leave. I’m gonna miss this place.” He said.

“What is there to miss? It’s just a stupid town!” I said back.

“Listen here, Bryce! This town is amazing!”

“OH really! What is there to do besides riding tractors and getting ice cream!” I said back.

“You just haven’t had the right people to show you everything amazing!” He gulped down a large spoon of ice cream.

“Alright then. Maxwell, I dare you to convince me this summer that this town has more to offer.” I smirked, knowing a guy like Maxwell wouldn’t agree.

“Deal!” He said which shocked me.

“Fine. Give me your number. Starting tomorrow, Maxwell, your challenge is to convince me this town ain’t so bad.”

“Max. Since we’re going to be hanging out all summer, might as well call me Max.” He said.

“Very well then, Max. Let’s see how this summer goes.”

3. First Expedition

Maxwell’s POV

Oh it’s on. Maybe for someone like Bryce, who always got attention, might not see this town, but I do. There’s many times where I would go out with friends and we would do stupid things together. And that’s what I want to do with Bryce.

Even if I don’t convince Bryce, I still want to at least help him get better memories of our small town. So in the future, when he becomes some famous football player, he’ll remember the fun he had in a small town in Nebraska.

Later that day, I thought more about where our first stop should be. There’s so many places in this town that are mostly kept secret. Thinking deeper, the sentimental thoughts of my times with my friends came back. The laughs and cheers that would echo when we were together.

Then an image flashed in my head. Esther, my friend, bringing blankets and we laid on a large field. All of us huddled together as we chatted about our lives.

I quickly picked up my phone and scrolled through my contacts list. Bryce and I had shared numbers, which felt a little off. I couldn’t exactly say why but something about a nerd and jock exchanging numbers feels like a violation.

I clicked on ‘Bryce <3’ which he himself wrote. The heart was unnecessary but I’ll let it slide.

Me

brrrryyyyycccccceeeeeeeeee Bryce! Bryce! Bryce! Bryce! Bryce! Bryce! Bryce!

Bryce

Chill man!

Me

You weren’t answering

Bryce

It’s only been five minutes… So why did you text me so urgently

Me

I’ve got the idea for our first expedition

Bryce

Sweet! Let me know where we’re gonna meet!

Me

Kk Meet me near Old Man’s Bar at 6:30 pm and bring your bike and a blanket See you there

Bryce

I swear you better not be planning to kill me :D

I laughed at Bryce’s text. Still couldn’t believe I was talking to him. And we kinda clicked.

The next day came and I had a backpack with a few snacks. I wore a loose shirt and shorts since tonight it’s expected to be warm. Driving to the bar, I saw Bryce on his bike looking around. When he saw me, a smile came on his face.

“Where to, tour guide?” He taunted.

“Just down this path.” I said. I motioned for a path that led away from the city.

I began biking, hearing the sounds of pedals behind me. I turned to see Bryce directly behind me. He pedaled faster and soon passed me. He gave me a smirk as if to say he’s better than me. I pedaled faster to catch up. Soon we were neck in neck.

A large butterfly hit Bryce’s face and he stopped biking. I also stopped and couldn’t stop laughing at him.

After around thirty minutes more, we arrived at a large plain field. The sun was setting and it was about to be time.

“What is this place?” Bryce questioned as I placed the blankets on the grass.

“Our first expedition.” I responded. “Lay down.” I said. Bryce walked over and sat next to me. He stared off into the sunset as I admired him.

He is truly beautiful.

“So what are we waiting for?” He said

“We are waiting for the universe.” I said.

bye! i love you all!

4. It’s The Universe!

Bryce’s POV

I watched on as the sun began setting. The warm summer breeze blew through us.

“We’ve got a few minutes to spare. You should take a nap.” Max said to me.

“Alright. But I better not wake up dead.” I smiled.

“You can’t wake up dead, but okay I guess.” He responded. I laid back, crossing my arms behind my head. Soon, sleep took over me.

I was exhausted after a long day. I waited constantly until the time came to meet Max. He’s really adamant on making me see the good things in this town. But along the way, I hope Max gets to show how good he is.

I was shaken awake by a soft hand on my bicep.

“Bryce! Look, it’s the universe!” He happily said. I groaned slightly but then opened my eyes.

I am indeed not dead.

But that’s not what caught my attention. Instead, it was what lied ahead of me. Just reaching past the heavens.

“Wow… is that…”

“Yep, it’s the Milky Way!” He said. I propped myself onto my elbows, laughing. It’s amazing. Out here, the stars shine brighter than ever before. Millions littered the sky in a parade of glimmer.

“How’d you find this place?” I said, still in awe at the sky.

“Well, my friends and I like to travel outside of town sometimes.” He said. I turned to look at him. He had a huge smile on his face. Like as if the world will never hurt him.

“Whenever I’m upset or feeling down or want to be happy, I think of the universe.” He added.

I smiled at that. Even Max has something to make him feel better.

“You should smile more.” I said, looking deep into Max’s eyes.

“So should you.” He responded.

“I guess we both smile the brightest together.” I said.

“Look! A shooting star!” He exclaimed which pulled my undivided attention away from him. It was indeed a shooting star.

“Quick, make a wish!” I said.

‘I wish to find someone who can be my universe.’

After my wish, I laid back onto the blanket. My eyes drifted from Max to the sky, like as if they’re the same thing. Maybe they could be?

“What ever happened between you and Pacifica?” He asked, also laying down.

“Oh, her…” I frowned at the mention of my ex-girlfriend.

“It didn’t work out. Turns out she wanted me to go to college in California. I refused and she broke it off.” I said.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” He said, sounding sympathetic.

“Don’t be. We weren’t compatible. So it works out.” I said. A smile spread on Max’s face.

Within this parallel of a new universe, everything disappeared. Miles of plains extended in every direction with no sight of civilization. Just me, Max, and the stars.

After a few hours, it was getting too late.

“We should go. It’s getting late.” He said.

“But it’s so beautiful. Can’t we just stay here?” I said, not wanting to leave.

“Maybe in the future. The universe won’t disappear.” He chuckled. I obliged and stood up as we fixed the blankets and folded them.

Riding back was still surreal. The stars illuminated above us. Our laughter fills the void space.

“Let’s hang out tomorrow. No expedition. Just the two of us.” I said.

“Deal. I need time to figure out the next place.” He said.

I hugged him and thanked him in my head for this amazing time.

“I’ll see you tomorrow!” He waved

“You too.” I said while wishing tomorrow was right now.

5. Diner

Maxwell’s POV

“Sweetie, are you going outside today-” My mom asked but stopped when I ran outside the house.

“I’ll be back later!” I yelled as I mounted my bike. I peddled and began to bike down the dirt path.

Today is the next day after our first expedition. I think I convinced Bryce that this place isn’t all that boring. You just need the right place to look.

Bryce and I agreed to meet at a small diner at the center of town. Which gives me the perfect time to choose the next place. There are a few places in town I’ve wanted to show. And I think I have an idea in mind.

I entered the diner and scanned the room. In the window booth, I saw Bryce sitting there. He waved his hand to signal at me when he saw me. I waved back and sat in the booth with him, across from him.

“So I was thinking…” Bryce said.

“That’s dangerous.” I chucked.

“Haha, very funny.” He said sarcastically. “Say you are actually able to convince me. Would we make this a yearly thing or something?” He asked.

“Not sure. I think it’s best we wait for the future when it comes.” I said. A friendship is possible, but an idea in the back of my head whispered ‘Is that all you want? Nothing more?’.

“What would you two boys like?” The waiter said. She smiled at both of us and whipped her brown hair.

“I’ll get a #7 but no mayo and strawberry milkshake.” I said.

“And uh, I’ll have a #3 combo but double bacon and a butterscotch milkshake, please.” Bryce said. The women wrote our stuff down and left with a smile.

“She was totally flirting with me.” Bryce smirked.

“Dude, she’s literally just being nice. Not everyone that smiles at you wants to hook up.” I said and rolled my eyes.

“Oh yeah? You sure.” He gave me a look that was unreadable. What could it mean? Oh God, that stare is confusing me.

We ate when our food came. Bryce tried to pester me about what the next place is. But I can’t tell him. Because A) It’s a surprise and B) It’s possibly illegal and I don’t want Bryce to bail.

“Alright. Meet me at that one place that has the junkyard of cars. You know which one I’m talking about?” I asked Bryce.

“Right! Yes. Are we gonna drive cars?” He said.

“No. Just meet me there but there’ll be an old red Buick to your right. Get in the car and wait for me. Got it?”

“Sure. Whatever you say, mister.” He slurped the remaining of his milkshake.

We departed, feeling something missing soon after. As I biked home, the glaring sun hit my skin. Warm feelings flooded my body. Telephone wires are sizzling above me and the sound of rocks hitting my wheels sounded.

“Mom. I’m back.” I said.

“Who were you out with?” Mom pestered me.

“Bryce Madden.” I said while setting down my cup of water.

“Interesting…” Mom whispered.

“What?” I asked, wondering why she said that.

“Oh nothing.” She grinned. Weird.

“Mom, can I borrow your flashlight that you use when you kick out the possums from the crawlspace?” I asked her.

“Uhhhh, yeah? What for?” She asked.

“Nothing.” I mischievously said. You see, the next place I have in mind is a dark place. I won’t say what it is yet.

I looked outside my window, admiring the view of the fields that surrounded us. Hanging out with Bryce earlier is just making me so… elated right now. I decide to go outside and turn on the hose and just run around. My happy yelps flood the area.

This summer is gonna be amazing.

I can feel it.

6. Old Arcade

Bryce’s POV

“Yo, I’m inside the car. Hurry up. I think there’s a malicious dog here patrolling the area. It’s gonna try to kill me.” I whispered into the phone.

Here I was, inside the red Buick, waiting for Max to come.

“Holy shit! It’s even worse! It’s a fucking chihuahua! Oh God, I’m fucked! Hurry up MAX!!” I pleaded into the phone.

“Look to your left, bitch!” He said. I turned and there he was, standing with a backpack and feeding that… devil dog a treat. I opened the door to be met face to face with Max.

“Seriously? I could’ve died!”

“Oh calm down, Prince Charming. I’m sure Mojito here wouldn’t have hurt you. Isn’t that right, Mojito?” He cooed at the dog.

“What about me? Do I get a treat?” I smirked at Max.

“No. Mojito is baby. You’re an ass.” He said.

“Pssh. Whatever. Let’s get moving already.” I said. Max gave the dog one last treat before he began walking to the side of the junkyard building.

“Wait a minute. Where are we going?” I asked. There was nothing but old buildings in this area. What could there possibly be here that’s so interesting?

“A few years ago, my friends and I came here to get one of my friends’ cars after it got towed. While waiting, we, the curious bitches we are, began to wander around.” Max entered an old building by opening a very rusted steel door. I followed behind him.

“After a while, we pulled into this place.” Max turned on a flashlight he brought with him. The area around was very old and eroded. Everything was abandoned and covered in cobwebs.

“Where are we?” I was interrupted when a creaking noise clicked. Max was toying with a light switch.

“Just gotta put this here. And this here. Okay. I got it! This might explode.” He softly spoke.

“HUH?!” He flipped it and rather than dying and being met face to face with Satan, the room slightly lit up. Colored lights flooded the area and screens turned on.

We were in an arcade.

“Woah! What the fuck!” I said.

“I know right. Apparently this was built decades ago. They closed but the town never got the budget to tear this place down. So it’s been here for a long time since then. The power, we theorize, comes from the junkyard since they share the same power lines.”

“Do these games still work?” I asked, getting close to one of the old arcades.

“Some. Here, I brought quarters.” He handed me a few to put into the game. The letter lit up.

“Isn’t this from Wreck-It-Ralph?” I asked as the character hopped around.

“No idea. Sit tight. Be right back.” He said. He left while I played the game. After a few minutes, the lights begin to change colors and flash.

“There. That looks better.” He came back.

“HELP ME! I SUCK AT THIS!” I pleaded. He laughed and came up next to me.

“Here. You’re supposed to click the buttons harder.” He taught me how to play slowly. The old mechanics were rusty.

We played side by side. Occasionally my hand would touch Max’s. I would apologize but I couldn’t help wanting to hold them a little longer. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel good longer, right?

“How bout a break? I’m starving.” He rubbed his stomach.

“Same. Got anything in that backpack for us to eat, Dora?”

“Actually, yes!” He pulled out some sandwiches and apple juice.

“Got us some sammies and juice.”

“What am, six?”

“If you don’t want it, I’ll eat it myself. I saw a dead rat back there, maybe you can eat that?” He bit into his sandwich.

“Fine! Gimme that sandwich.” He handed it to me and we sat on a table with chairs.

We ate in silence. It was nice. Directly underneath the shimmering lights of blue, purple, red, and more. I looked at Max, and he looked at me.

7. Mustard

Maxwell’s POV

“Is there something on my face?” I said. Panickingly, I touched my face and checked all over for anything. However, I failed to remember that I had mustard on my fingers so now my whole face has mustard.

“Oh God! I fucked up. Oh God!!” I wailed while Bryce was laughing, no, hollering.

“It’s not funny!” I said while wiping the sauce off my face.

“OH GOD! THAT SHIT WAS HILARIOUS!” He laughed to the point where he was wheezing.

“Are you gonna help me wipe it off.” He stood up and walked towards me. He held a napkin in his hand. He softly began wiping the sauce off my face.

“Stop moving. You’re acting like a child!” He said. I stopped moving while he finished cleaning me. God, I really am like a child.

After he was done, his eyes met mine like before. Only this time, we were stuck in a place of our own. I refused to look away from his eyes. They were huge and brown. His black, wavy hair fell onto his forehead. He didn’t push them back, but rather let them hang off.

“You’ve got some on your lips.” He said, snapping out of his trance. He brought the napkin to my lips and wiped them off.

Not sure why, but I bit him.

“OW! What was that for?!” He cradled his finger.

“That’s for distracting me and making me put mustard on my face!”

“That sounds like a you problem. What’s my finger gotta do with it!?!” He said. I grabbed his finger and put my cold apple juice bottle on it for it to cool down.

“Better?” I asked.

“Mmhmm. Defo.”

“Never say that again.”

“Whatevs. C’mon. I wanna play more games!” He began to tug my arm while I stood up. He led me to another game.

“Gimme. Gimme quarters!” He said while holding out his hands. I pulled out the quarters while he put them in to play the game. I swear, he’s like a child.

For an hour, we continued to play and do stupid things. It was an hour but felt like mere seconds with Bryce.

“WHO’S THERE?! SHOW YOURSELF! YOU ARE TRESPASSING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!” A voice yelled through the empty halls. Bryce stopped playing while I began to shake.

“Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. We gotta go!” I said to Bryce. I grabbed my backpack and began running towards the back. I stopped and turned to see a shocked Bryce.

“BRYCE?!” I whined. I grabbed his elbow and dragged him behind me. We ran, as the sound of footsteps followed behind us.

“STOP RIGHT THERE!” An angry voice trailed behind us.

“Whatever you do… DON’T STOP!” I said to Bryce.

We continued running through the creaky and dimly lit halls. We were growing tired fast.

“In here!” Bryce said.

“What? NO! We gotta leave!” I said. Bryce tugged me to an empty closet that was open.

“Do you trust me?” He said. I do in fact trust him. It was either follow him or get caught. There was no time to think. It’s time to get in the closet.

I followed him and we quickly entered the small closet. Bryce slowly closed the door and turned on his phone flashlight. He brought his finger to his mouth to tell me to shut up. I’m not even speaking!!

“Where’d you go, hooligans!?” A voice said. His steps approached the door but sounded like he walked past us.

“YOU WON’T GET AWAY!” He yelled. His voice now echoing away from us.

We stayed in silence for a while, expecting him to come back and catch us. After five minutes and nothing happening, Bryce whispered.

“I think he’s gone.” He whispered. However, he was close. VERY close to my face. Too close.

“Should we head out?” I asked, feeling his breath close to my face. Instead, we just stood there, the only light coming from his phone and only the two of us there.

8. Internal Conflict

Bryce’s POV

He looks so adorable-

NO!

But he does. Look at him. He’s so sweet-

NO!

Don’t ignore me. I’m telling you the truth…

Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! No! There’s no way I can find Max attractive. Sure, he does have huge blue eyes. And curly hair. And freckles on his face. But I’m allowed to call another guy cute without being… gay!

“BRYCE!” Max whispered. I snapped out of my trance. I looked away from Max to look at… Max again.

“Um, yeah? Wassup?”

“I asked if we should leave or stay.” He whispered.

“Leave. I think the coast is clear.” I said. I haven’t heard any noise for a few minutes.

Not to mention, the closet is pretty cramped. My body is basically touching Max’s. And I can’t help but hate myself for wanting to feel more.

I slowly opened the door and cringed when the heavy metal creaked. I poked my head outside and turned my head left and right. Nothing. The lights seem to have been turned off, only light from outside coming in and barely illuminating the halls.

“I think the coast is clear.” I whispered. I got out the closet and waited for Max.

We’re both out the closet now.

“Over here. There’s a back exit.” Max whispered. Using our flashlights, we maneuvered the halls until we opened an old wooden door. Upon opening, the bright sun shone on our faces.

I turned to see Max with his hands on his knees and gagging at the floor.

“Oh- Oh God.” He gagged out.

“Are you well?” I asked, worried about him.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just claustrophobic. That’s all. Being in the room was a lot for me.” He said.

“What can I do to help?” I put my hand on his back and rubbed it.

“Honestly. You just being here is fine.” He breathed out.

“…” Silence

“I- I don’t know why I said that. Just ignore that.” Max added quickly. He stood up straight again as his face was red. It was kinda adorable.

STOP THAT!

I’m not gay! I can’t be. I’ve had sex with girls only! I’ve never been attracted to a guy before. That just seems wrong!

“Let’s go home. It’s getting dark.” I said. I listened to what he said. I ignored what he said. But at the same time, those words stuck in my head. Does that make sense?

I think it might be because we’re great friends.

“That was a fun day.” He said.

“Quite eventful. Especially with your face full of mustard.” I giggled.

“Great. Now you’re gonna tease me about it, huh?” He scoffed.

“Aw come on! You can’t lie. It was funny.” I said. Max hopped on his bike.

Max and I pedaled our way home. The sun began to set on the horizon. Goodbye another day. But at least I can say this day was well spent.

As I pedaled, I turned my head to see Max. He was taking in the free hair that blew through his hair. His curls were waving in the wind as the air tussled them in different directions.

It’s crazy to think that for 12 years, Max was someone I never talked to. Someone who was there, but I never actually talked to. And so far, I’ve had more fun with him than anyone in the past years of my life.

I kinda don’t want to think about after summer. It pains me that we have such a short amount of time to be together and have fun.

Because if I’m being honest, Max is right, I’m gonna miss this town.

9. Late Night Call

Maxwell’s POV

Okay…

Today was weird.

Especially that moment when Bryce and I were in the closet and he was spaced out. He stared at my face intently. Almost like he was looking at all of my features and admiring them. Once he snapped out, that look went away and hesitation came back.

There’s no way Bryce could be gay. During school, there was always talk of Bryce and his… endeavors. Girls upon girls upon girls. I’m sure you can fill a book, so to speak. I was actually disgusted by the amount of girls he hooked up with. He dated Pacifica during senior year. And he stopped hooking up with people.

Me? To be honest, I’ve always wondered about my sexuality. It’s definitely not straight! I can recall the many guys I would gawk at in the locker room. I remember my first kiss, Jasmine Costello, under the slide in third grade. I did not enjoy it. The kiss felt off.

Bryce and I being in the closet sent weird tingles down my spine. His body was way too close to me. Not that I didn’t like it. I think I did. His hot breath on my face and his black wavy hair falling onto his forehead.

That felt right.

I laid in bed while I thought about that whole scene. I imagined a scenario where Bryce actually decided to kiss me. That scenario split into two, one where I kissed him and the other where he kissed me. Then that split into multiple scenarios where we dated and in the future we were still together.

God! I need to shut up!

I looked at the clock. It read 10:54 pm. I decided to call Bryce. I hope he’s awake. It’s summer. He has to be.

“Max? Are you okay? Are you hurt? What’s going on?” Bryce answered frantically.

“Dude, relax. I just wanted to call you.” I chuckled and blushed at his concern about my wellbeing.

“It’s 10! I should be getting my beauty sleep.” He exhaled.

“You don’t need anymore.” I softly spoke into the phone.

“Did you say something?” He asked.

“Nope!”

“Mm ’kay. So why’d you call me? Are you confessing your everlasting love?” I can feel his sexy smirk through the phone.

“I’m just bored. It’s not that deep.” I spoke flatly.

“Awww! I was the first person you called! I feel honored!” He cooed.

“It was either you or the police.”

“Ouch! Since you’re bored, what were you doing before?”

‘Thinking of us being together.’ I said in my head.

“I was thinking about our next place.”

“I was gonna ask where but I know you wont tell me.” He chuckled.

“Got that right! What were you doing before I called?”

“Was hanging out with my little sis. Thank God you called before she made me sit down and watch more Sofia the First.” I laughed.

“I do what I can. Sorry about almost getting us arrested earlier. I didn’t expect that to take a turn.”

“No worries, old sport. It was fun! But I’m hoping the next place isn’t another illegal activity.”

“Actually… I can’t promise it’s not.”

“Jesus! How many laws have you broken, Maxwell Knox?”

“Too many to count.” Of course I was kidding. “Listen. Our next place is gonna be a little away from town. It’s gonna be on the highway but within city limits.”

“Sounds fine. Need to bring anything?”

“Just your fine self”

“That’s the only good thing I can do!”

10. Just Be Friends

Bryce’s POV

“Real it back! So you managed to not only make Ms. Chavez to have a mental breakdown, but she also QUIT because of you and your band of hooligans?!” Max said into the phone. I kinda blushed behind the phone.

“Well, it wasn’t my fault. Derek was the one who threw the hamster! I was an innocent bystander!” I pleaded. But my plea was also mixed with laughter at that old memory.

“INNOCENT!? BYSTANDER!? You’re the one who let Nibbles out of her cage!” Max scream-whispered into the phone. I couldn’t help but laugh at him.

“To be fair, Nibbles only had a few days left to live.” I said.

“SHE WAS PREGNANT, YOU ASS!” He screamed softly.

“Oh, whoops.” I said. “Anyways, I guess Ms. Chavez was so upset and distraught by what we did she quit on sight.”

“That’s not funny! I’m serious! She was super nice. I don’t even know why you hung out with Derek, Archie, and Isaiah. They were assholes!” Max said.

“Yeah. I see that now. I guess I only hung out with them cause they looked up to me.” I said.

“Looked up to you? Nah, ma dude. They followed you like dogs. You say jump, they say how high. The three of them shared one brain cell and a half!” Max sounded angry.

“Gee, what did they do to you?” I nervously laughed.

“Oh, um, I don’t know? Maybe they were the ones who locked me in the janitor’s closet after telling me they bought me a birthday cake?” He spoke. An awkward silence fell through the connection.

“I had no idea. I’m sorry they did that.” I said. To be honest, I was aware of some of the trio’s actions but never knew Max was at the receiving end of one.

“Don’t apologize for them. They did a lot more to me.” He said softly.

“If it makes you feel better, they didn’t graduate and were sent to an academy far away.” I said.

“That does make me feel better.” I can sense the smile on his face. “Anyways, the next expedition is tomorrow.”

“I’m not gonna get enough sleep.” I said.

“So go to sleep.” He said.

“I’m not tired.” I yawned soon afterwards.

“Mmhmm.”

“MAXWELL ALEXANDER KNOX REDDING! IF YOU DON’T GET YOUR ASS TO SLEEP RIGHT NOW!” A voice screamed through Max’s phone.

“Crap! My mom just yelled at me. I gotta go!” He whispered.

“I understand. Go to bed! I’ll see you tomorrow, or later, since it’s 3:00 am right now.”

“Alright. Sweet dreams, Bryce.”

“Good night, Max.” I said. He hung up. I stared at the screen for a while as if I waited for him to call me back.

Is it wrong that I wanted to continue to talk to him more? I felt like our conversation only lasted minutes. But in reality, it was hours.

We shared some fond memories. We shared a lot of the same memories. We were at the same place. It just so happened we didn’t know each other then. What would’ve happened if I talked to him then. What if instead of hanging out with idiots, I hung out with Max and his group of idiots?

The day at the arcade was one of the most fondest memories I have. I can’t even remember what I ate for lunch today. But I sure as hell can remember that the buttons on the Mortal Combat game were red and mustard yellow.

Mustard.

I laughed silently at that image. A clueless Max rubbing mustard on his face. And then me rubbing it off. The image stopped when the details of Max’s face became more… interesting. It was like my brain was suddenly rewired. Recently, my brain has been acting stupid.

I’m slowly seeing Max in a new light. He’s amazing, yes. But I would never date him. I’m not gay! I can’t be. My football career would be ruined if I was gay.

I guess I can just focus my mind on making sure Max doesn’t infiltrate my brain too much. Just be friends, that’s it!

11. Gazebo

Maxwell’s POV

“Yep! You’re trying to kill me!” Bryce said. We pulled up to the empty and vacant parking lot of the abandoned amusement park. Located right off the highway, this park was in full operation in the 70’s until it got shut down.

It’s been here since. Many kids like to sneak here and drink and smoke weed. Pretty nice!

“I wouldn’t kill you.” I said. We hopped off our bikes and left them on the ground.

“Cause I’m that important to you?”

“No, cause all my friends are gone and I would have no one to help me dispose the body.”

We entered the old and withered signs. Greetings welcoming us to this place gave off a dark feeling.

“Yo, this place kinda scary not gonna lie. Why are we here? Are we ghost hunting?” He asked. He shivered at the cold. It’s weird cause the rest of town is hot, but here, it’s cold.

“No,” I chuckled. “There’s something better. I swear it’s better than ghost hunting.” I said. We walked past the rides. I felt like someone was watching me. But it’s just my paranoia. In my backpack, I held snacks (no mustard) and a battery pack.

The battery pack will make sense later.

“If I scream, will something bad happen?” Bryce said. I could tell he was getting bored.

“Yeah. You’ll get kicked by me.” I said.

“AAAAAHHHHHHHHH- OW!” Bryce screamed loud but stopped when I kicked his shins.

“What’d I say? Huh?” I launched my foot forward and acted like I was going to kick him again.

“Okay okay okay. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again. Gee. Ow.” He rubbed his leg.

“Sorry.” I said. I did feel like I took it too far.

“No worries, mate. It didn’t even hurt.”

I ignored him and led him farther into the park. We passed many attractions. Then we entered a wood area but still in the park. I led him through while branches hit our faces.

“Here we are.” I said.

“What is it?” He asked. He inspected the whole area. It wilted with age but still managed to keep its beauty. The vines and wild flowers only made this more ethereal.

“It’s a gazebo. It’s been here for decades. Check this out!” I pulled out the battery pack and went to a loose wire. I connected it to the battery and flipped the switch.

“WOAH!” Bryce said. His shocked face lit up, as did a gazebo. Small bulbs of light flashed on the ceiling of the gazebo.

“Come on!” I said. I walked underneath the gazebo. Bryce followed close behind. We stood. No matter how many times I come here, this place continues to make me feel something.

“So what’s the story of this place?” He asked.

“My friends and I came to ghost hunt. We were pretending to do a vlog for a YouTube channel. I strayed away from the group and found this. Then I found that the lights still work. This place is kinda a spot no one else knows about.”

“I feel honored you showed me this place.” Bryce rubbed my shoulder.

I looked into Bryce’s eyes. The glow from the setting sun gilded his already hazel eyes. Now it was like a swirl of gold and honey. He was close to me. Very close. It reminded me of the closet at the arcade.

“Max…”

“Bryce…”

I looked up at him. He licked his lips. His eyes trailed to my lips. I placed his hands on my waist. Tingles shocked through my body. His fingers grasped me tightly.

He began to lean in. It was instinct. I leaned in too. Our breaths fanned our lips.

And we kissed.

It was a moment that I knew will be with me forever. It felt right. It felt amazing. It felt perfect. Like I was meant to kiss Bryce.

We pulled apart. Bryce looked content but realization hit him. His eyes now filled with regret but it looked like he was conflicted.

“I-I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” Bryce said. He unhooked his hand from my waist. And then he ran away. Leaving me alone and wondering what I did wrong.

12. Questioning

Bryce’s POV

I ran out of there quickly.

Don’t look back! Don’t look back! Don’t look back!

I hopped onto my bike and peddled out of there. In the back of my mind, it kept telling me to go back. I felt a hint of guilt, leaving Max all alone in such a wonderful place.

I biked for minutes until I reached back home. The sun was barely out. The cricks of cricket and the humid air of summer gave off an uncomfortable feeling.

I entered inside and went straight to my room. I closed the door softly and laid on my bed.

I sighed.

What happened? Why did we kiss? Why did he kiss me? And why did I want more?

Am I gay?

No! I can’t be. I’ve told myself for years I would never find another male attractive. Maybe I’m just craving human intimacy. I’ve only hung out with Max this summer. He’s just a friend. That’s all.

So why is that kiss still lingering on my lips?

And I leaned it! I wanted that kiss! Oh God! I’ve seen other men before. In the locker rooms, I would see half or sometimes fully naked teammates walking around. And not once was I ever turned on.

Did I like Max?

He’s, in my eyes, perfect. He’s smart, funny, sarcastic, and enjoyable to be around. He already has an upper hand on everyone else I hung out with. Plus, I can say that Max is really attractive, like holy heck! He’s so cute.

But that doesn’t make me gay!

Should I call Max? That’s stupid. How do you kiss someone of the same sex and run away and leave them and then call them? That’s barbaric. No. I can only imagine what Max must be going through right now.

It would be inhumane for me not to think about how this is all affecting him. Our kiss was out of the blue. I can remember when a few people would gossip about Max being gay. He never confirmed nor denied it. But I didn’t care because it was none of my business.

But now, it kinda is. Afterall, WE KISSED!

Okay okay okay okay! I need to pause and think about this.

Did I like the kiss? Yes!

Did I want the kiss? Yes!

Am I glad Max was my first guy kiss? Yes!

Did I feel anything, good or bad, from the kiss? Yes!

Do I want to kiss him again?

YES!

…Woah. If there was a gay radar out there, that shit would be going berserk and poiting right at me with the words ‘Gay AF’ plastered in rainbow font.

I’m not sure if I am fully gay. I always found women attractive. Max is the first guy.

But do I really need a label?

I need more time to figure this out. Talk to someone else. Or think deeper about my feelings. Hell, I might even watch gay porn and see how it is and if it brings out any feelings.

So I laid in my bed, staring at my ceiling. And I thought about something

Max.

I thought about Max.

I tossed and turned in my sleep. It was a clash in my head. I felt a migraine coming on.

I’m sorry, Max. But I need time to figure out what the fuck just happened today.

13. Luna The Cat

Maxwell’s POV

Why did I do that?

God! I managed to fuck up the only good thing about this summer!

Bryce isn’t gay. In the 12 years I’ve known him, he has not once exhibited gay behavior. I feel awful. I feel like I had taken advantage of him. Maybe he only leaned in to kiss me because I was doing it.

Afterall, I was entranced by him.

I’m not stupid or ignorant about the rumors that surrounded me about my sexuality. I can recall the few times I would get called a fag or teased by other guys. Funny thing is, I never even mentioned anything about my sexuality. Those rumors just came out of nowhere.

I never dated any girls and the only people I hung out with were girls. Does that make someone gay? No, of course not! I personally just can’t stand the masculinity the boys carry with them.

After Bryce left me, I waited a while. A few tears fell from my face. I think I’m starting to like Bryce. And that scares me, since eventually he would be going away. He did mention this could be a yearly tradition, but would he actually come through with them?

Personally, I blame myself for getting so attached. But then again, Bryce also leaned in…

I sat outside on our porch, looking up into the night sky. I can see the universe from here, though, it’s much better in that large field. I heard a meow coming from next to me.

“Hey, Luna.” I said to the midnight black cat with yellow eyes sitting next to me. I leaned my hand down and scratched behind her ears. She purred at my touch.

Luna is a stray cat but my mom and I consider her our official cat. However, she is allowed to roam freely. There would be times where she would leave for a week and return like a child who found their way home after a fun adventure.

“Do you think I’m pathetic for falling for a straight guy?” I asked Luna.

“Reow.” Luna responded.

“You’re right. My feelings are valid. Even if Bryce doesn’t like me back, at least I know I’m capable of love.” I said.

“Reeooww.”

“Oh well, at least we’ll be alone together forever.” I reached down and rubbed Luna’s stomach. I felt it was bloated. I looked down at her. Oh, she’s pregnant…

“God dammit, Luna. We were supposed to be lonely together.” I said. I rubbed her belly.

“Reooooww.”

“I just hope he treats you well. Who am I kidding? Cats aren’t monogamous!” I said.

“Reow.” Luna hopped onto my lap and cuddled up next to me.

“No, I’m not gonna seduce Bryce to fall in love with me. He has to do that on his own terms.” I said. I breathed in frustration.

A few days have now passed. And no words from Bryce. This is when I thought it was my fault. But also, Bryce probably needs time to figure out his feelings. It’s been a lonely week. No words, no laughs, no expeditions.

I have so much more to show Bryce. I just hope that even if he doesn’t like me back, we can at least still be friends.

Actually, it would probably hurt more if we just stayed friends. It’s not that I want him to love me, but I’m just saying. Only being friends with Bryce, knowing he’s right there but I can’t have him…

I laid on our hammock, rocking it back and forth to allow some of the summer breeze to blow past my hair to calm my nerves. Luna laid on the porch chair, my mom was at the town center shopping. It’s just me here.

I’m slowly growing more impatient. If Bryce doesn’t talk to me for a few more days, it’ll be a confirmation he no longer wants to hang out with me.

I’m totally whipped for him.

Just when I felt myself go to sleep, my phone rang in my pocket. I picked it up.

Message from Bryce : Hey, can we talk. Please?

He finally texts me. After all this time, he texts me. This text can mean anything. He wants to be friends, he wants more space, he wants to leave me. Or maybe…

…he also loves me.

But a guy can dream.

14. Boyfriend

Bryce’s POV

So I came to a conclusion.

And it’s-

“Bryce?” I looked up from my seat at Freezey’s to see a nervous Max. I texted him that I wanted to talk to him. But also apologize for ignoring him the past week.

I had long discussion with myself for many hours. To some, I might be seen as over dramatic. But you gotta look at it from my perspective. I had dated girls since kindergarten. I lost my virginity to a girl in freshman year of high school.

And now Max comes along and just throws everything out of balance.

“Hey, Max.” HEY? That’s what I have to say to him after leaving him alone after kissing him and not talking to him for a week?

“Can I sit?” He asks. Oh no. He’s asking if he can sit with me. Before the kiss, he would’ve just sat. But he feels the need to ask to not make me uncomfortable.

“I want to say sorry. I shouldn’t have left you there all alone. And I’m sorry for ignoring you.” I said.

“No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you. That was on me. You’re straight, and I was stupid to think something would happen between us. If you don’t want to hang out with me anymore, I understand.” He whispered. I slip my hazelnut ice cream over to him.

“It’s my fault too. Cause, I guess I leaned into the kiss too.” I rubbed my back.

“You only did that cause I was doing it.” He said.

“What if I wanted to kiss you?” I sternly said to him.

“You what?” He gasped.

“I was thinking for a long time…”

“And.” He ate some ice cream.

“I liked the kiss.” I blushed. I’m pathetic.

“You did?” He looked shocked.

“Y-Yeah.”

There was silence that fell between us. A major secret was revealed.

I, Bryce Madden, high school quarterback and state champion, am falling for Maxwell Knox.

“Now would be a good time to say something.” I said to Max. He looked down and looked back up with glossy eyes.

“What do you expect me to say? You just said you liked our kiss.”

“Well, how about if I can get another kiss?” I said. Max blushed hard.

“Sure.” He said.

He leaned in and I leaned in. Quickly, we gave each other a small kiss. It felt right. Like my lips are meant to be here and nowhere else. And his lips are perfect.

“Just as I remember…” I said. I rubbed my thumb over his lips.

“So is this just a summer fling?” He asked. A hint of sadness in his voice told me that he hoped a little more would come out of this.

“No. You’re too precious to be treated like that.” I said.

“So what does that make us?” He asked.

“How about, boyfriend. How’s that sound?”

“I like it! Fits nice.”

“Perfect. Max, you are now officially my boyfriend!” I said.

“Never thought I’d hear the day the quarterback would call me his boyfriend.” He chuckled.

“Well it’s here now.”

“Dreams do come true.” He said.

I have no intentions on taking advantage of our relationship. I can tell now that this summer will be more than just a summer romance.

It’s the start of something bigger than either of us can describe.

15. Fourth of July

Maxwell’s POV

“COME ON, BRYCE!” I giggled.

“Wait up! UGH! This mountain is too steep!!” He complained. I just laughed at him as his huge body struggled to climb up the mountain.

“Hurry! This is where you get the best view!” I said. I heard the sound of popping. It’s starting.

Bryce finally reached the top and panted. He stood next to me and finally looked out past the mountains.

“Woah!” Is all he said. He breathed in relief, smelling the summer breeze.

I looked over the cliff and saw the dark town with colorful fireworks popping in the distance.

“Happy Fourth of July!” Bryce said and leaned into me.

“I guess. Not a great time to be American.” I said. Bryce agreed.

“I’m sorry about leaving you after we kissed.” Bryce said. We sat on the floor, him playing with my hair.

“Not this again!” I groaned. “It’s fine.” I said.

“You know what would make me feel better?” He asked.

“What?” I asked. I turned and saw a glint of mischievousness in his eyes.

“If I could get a kiss. Just to make up for it.” He said.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to force you into anything.”

“I’m sure.” He said.

“Fine. Come get your kiss.” I said. He leaned in and I leaned in too.

Our lips touched, and this time I knew Bryce wasn’t going to leave me. He likes me. I like him.

“Hmm. You taste great.” He said.

“Thanks. I had apple pie earlier.”

“I guess apple pie is my favorite flavor now.” He hugged my side. We turned to look at the fireworks which lit up the night sky in Nebraska.

“Your family’s popping fireworks?” I asked him.

“Yeah. My little sister Cindy insisted we get some. Yours?” He asked.

“Nah. My mom is looking after our cat Luna. She’s pregnant.”

“You have a cat?” He asked,

“Yeah. She’s a stray but we like to call her our cat. Occasionally comes to our house and lets us pet her.” I said.

“And your dad?” He asked.

“Left my mom a few years ago. He had another family in Wisconsin.” I said. “And your mom?” I asked him.

“She died when she gave birth to my sister.”

“Oh. I’m sorry.”

“It’s cool. I miss her but at least all the memories I have of her are good ones.” He said. I held his hand tightly.

“We both lack a parental figure.” I said.

“And we turned out great!”

“We certainly did.” I grabbed his bicep. He flexed it to show off his muscles.

“I have another expedition soon.” I said.

“I expected nothing less.” It’s nice that these expeditions are becoming a part of our lives. And I wonder if I’ve already convinced him to like this town. Or is he only doing them because he wants to spend more time with me?

“I guess you can consider it our first date…” I cringed if he was okay with that.

“Then I hope it’s a great place.” He kissed my forehead like I was a child.

“Trust me, it is.” I said. Everything was becoming planned in my head. It’s going to become perfect.

16. Wisteria

Bryce’s POV

“Keep your eyes closed.” Max said. We had just biked out to a far out area. It’s definitely somewhere I’ve never been before.

“Well I mean, I already have a blindfold on my eyes.” I stood in a grassy patch, from what my senses could feel. Max put a blindfold over my eyes and walked me to a different spot.

I used my other senses to try and guess where I was. I felt a slight breeze but the sun was still hitting my back so it must be a clear area. But we left in the late afternoon so it’s not night. Maybe late sunset. I heard the sound of a stream nearby. I don’t remember there being a stream near us. I tasted… apple pie from my lunch earlier.

“This blindfold feels kinda kinky. Are you there, Mr. Grey?” I asked. I held out my hands to try and feel around.

“Okay. Now you can take it off.” He said. I undid the blindfold and was met to the sight of Max standing at the root of a tree.

The tree was a wisteria tree, with purple branches of flowers reaching down, like a willow tree. The closest part near the ground had several light bulbs, glowing like the stars. And under that, in the grass, was a blanket with several snacks for us.

“How’d you like it?” He asked with a blush and smile on his face.

“I love it!” I said.

“Come! Sit!” He said. I sat cross-legged next to him. I wore shorts and showed off my strong legs. And a tight shirt. My entire outfit is to make Max as turned on as possible.

“What is this place?” I asked, looking around. The stream was right next to us, flowing in the same direction as the sun was setting.

“There’s an elderly man who put these bulbs in a long time ago. I met him when we did that senior citizen project in Malone’s class. Since then, he’s let me come here when I want to be one with nature.”

“Well, it’s beautiful.” I looked at Max, his smooth face glowing with the lights. “Just like you.”

“Oh, shush you!” He giggled. “Let’s eat!” He opened a pack of sandwiches for us.

“Did you bring mustard?” I wiggled my eyebrows.

“Hmmmm. I’m never gonna live that down, am I?” He sighed.

“Never.” He pulled out apple juice, which I’ve grown to love. Apple pie, a favorite of mine suddenly. And several more snacks.

“Never pegged you to be a romantic.” I said.

“There’s a lot more I could show you.” He said. My dick jolted a bit.

“Not yet. But I hope soon.” I snarkily replied

We spent the next hour just eating and talking. Just simple talking, accompanied by giggles and small kisses here and there.

“Stand up with me.” He said. I stood up and grabbed his hand. But my legs stumbled a bit from sitting down so long. I fell backwards, pulling him with me. He landed on top of me and gasped.

“Oh God! I’m sorry.” He panicked. I rubbed his back.

“I’m not.” I said softly right at his face.

I stared into his bright blue eyes. I pushed one of his curls behind his ears.

I pulled his head down to meet my lips. I kissed him and he kissed back. It was simple kisses but then we started to pick up the speed. I slid my tongue over his lips. He refused until I grabbed his ass.

“HEY-!” He opened his mouth temporarily but then I slipped my tongue into his mouth.

We swapped saliva, and I enjoyed nothing more.

“Mmm.” He moaned

“How about next time I take you somewhere?” I said.

“I guess.”

“Great. Bring some comfy clothes. We’re gonna be playing football.” I whispered in his ear before planting a kiss on his temple.

bye! i love you all!

17. Closer

Maxwell’s POV

I laid on top of Bryce, leaning my head onto his chest. He rubbed my back softly and hummed in satisfaction. His heart beat thumped in rhythmic beats. His eyes glowed in an amber haze, reflecting the bulbs and bright pink leaves of the tree.

“I was there when you won the championship.” I said, my head still on his hard chest.

“You were? That kinda makes me feel nice.” He said and smiled.

“Yeah. You’re pretty good.” I giggled into his chest.

“I was there when you found out you were valedictorian.” He said.

“I remember that day. Calculus class.” I reminisced.

“I cheered a bit for you.”

“I can’t believe we never talked back then. And now here we are, laying down together after a heated make out session.”

“What if we got together earlier?” He asked.

“No idea. Still doesn’t change how I feel about you.”

“How do you feel about me?” He asked.

“I-I know I like you. A lot.” I stuttered and blushed.

“Well, I like you too a lot.” He kissed my lips. I began to move down on him and reached to the belt of his shorts.

“What are you doing?!” He sat up and watched me with wide eyes.

What does it look like I’m doing?” I asked and unbuckled his shorts.

“Stop! Are you sure you want to do that?” Bryce asked me.

“I’m sure, Bryce.” I leaned forward to give him a kiss.

I’ve never given a blowjob before. But I was fine with Bryce being my first. The amount of pleasure on Bryce’s face, knowing that it was me providing that comfort, boosted my motivation. To be fair, his size was… impressive… if you catch my drift.

Bryce laid on his back, breathing heavily after we finished.

“That was the best blowjob I’ve ever gotten. Are you sure that was your first time?” He turned to face me, me laying down on his left side.

“It was.” I blushed, licking my lips.

Bryce scooted closer to me and hugged me with his arm behind my neck. I cuddled into his side, feeling his warmth.

“This makes us closer now.”

“Trust me, there’s more ways we can be closer.” I whispered in his ear.

“We should get home. It’s dark now.” Bryce sat up. I looked around and saw it was indeed dark. The light bulbs above us provided enough light to brighten our darkest times.

Bryce got up and put on his shorts, tying his belt.

We cleaned up everything quickly and packed our food. We left to our bikes and hopped on, right after we had a quick make out session.

“So, are you planning our next expedition? I’ve planned everything else. Figure it’s your turn now.” I said to Bryce.

“Yeah. At the high school’s football field.” Bryce responded

“Wait! How are we gonna get access?” I asked. We can’t just sneak into the field. Pretty sure that’s trespassing.

“Dude. I’m the star quarterback. I can do anything.” I went up to him and went in for a hug before reaching behind and grabbing his ass.

“And I can do anything to you.” I whispered in his ears.

“Oh-oh would you uh, look at the time.” He muttered out and blushed so hard.

“Time to go home.” I said.

We rode on our bikes, letting our worries fly past by us. Nothing could stop the power that flows between the two of us. We’re invincible. We’re forever.

18. Football

Bryce’s POV

I sat on the bleachers of our old high school, waiting for Max to arrive. Just the idea of the two of us roughing it out excited me. After he gave me a blowjob, I can now better understand the true extent of how much we appreciate each other.

Max walked onto the field, holding a water bottle in his hand.

“It’s like, 85 degrees out. Are you sure you want to play ball?” He asked. Droplets of sweat formed on his forehead.

“I’m sure. It’ll make it more fun.” I went to walk towards him. We hugged and shared a kiss.

“Set your stuff down and join me on the field.” I said. I stood in the middle while playing with the football. Max came onto the field, the first thing he did was stare at my tight fitting clothes.

“So how does this work?” He asked as he turned away.

“Well, since we don’t have a full team, we’ll just be throwing the ball. And you’ll be catching them.” I said. But I also have other intentions.

“Sounds easy enough.” He aaid smugly.

“That’s what you say. Go to the 60 yards line. I’ll throw first.” Max went to the line, which is a bit far from me but I’ve thrown farther. I threw the ball and Max actually caught it.

“I DID IT!” He yelled. I chuckled when he held up the football in his hands.

“THROW IT BACK!” I yelled. He… tried to throw it… I guess. But it landed in the middle of us.

“FUCK ME!” He groaned in annoyance. I walked to the middle and picked it up.

“Try again!” I threw the ball back. Max threw the ball with more effort and this time I was able to catch it.

“FUCK YEAH!” He cheered and jumped.

“CATCH QUICKLY!” I threw the ball and caught him off guard. He caught it but wasn’t prepared for me to start to run after him.

“BRYCE? BRYCE! NOOOOO!!” Max started to run away from me to the home end of the field. Right before he scored a touchdown, I grabbed him from behind and hugged his waist close to me.

“Gotcha!” I said. Max started giggling in my arms.

“Bryce! No! Let me go!” He continued to giggle which only made me laugh harder.

“Nu-uh. You’re mine, Max.” I said. I started to suck on his ear and neck while Max let out a few laughs mixed with moans.

Max dropped the ball onto the floor. His hands ran through my hair.

“Bryce…” He moaned. God I love how he says my name when he moans.

“Max…” I grunted back.

“We-we shouldn’t do this here.” He said.

“Why not?” I kissed his ear. “I want you so badly, Max.” I sucked on his neck.

“And I want you too. But not here. I don’t want grass marks.”

“Fine. God! You make my balls so blue.” We both laughed and made our way back to the bleachers, with me occasionally stealing kisses.

When we sat on the bleachers, I leaned back and remembered some fond memories of me being on the field. The adrenaline, excitement, and attention I got is something I would never trade for.

Actually.

Seeing Max next to me, I realize his attention is the one I want. I wonder how many times he watched me on the field. Did he ever cheer for me? Was he proud of me?

“I wish we would’ve met sooner.” I said.

“I’m glad we met in the first place. Better late than never.” Max leaned into me. “Since we’re here, I’ve got something to show you.” Max said.

“Now?” I asked. Max stood up.

“Yes, now. It’s literally right here.” He began to pull my hand and lead me off the bleachers.

I wonder where we’re going…

19. Club House

Maxwell’s POV

I held onto Bryce’s hand and led him down the bleachers and underneath them. I walked further into the under area. The only light penetrating here was through the seats of the bleachers, casting horizontal glows all throughout.

“It’s here!” I said. I ran over to the barely lit up space and turned on the oil lamp that surprisingly still worked.

The light showed off the milk crates turned over used as stools. A bigger crate sat in the middle with a cloth over it and cards in the middle from a previous game. The wood of the crate was starting to weather and the patches of dirt that marked our past had grown to match the grass. It’s like we were never here.

“Welcome to the Club House!” I signaled to Bryce who was just standing looking at everything.

“Club House?” He asked.

“‘Kay. So. How do I say this without sounding offensive?” I said to myself. “Sometimes, the football games, and PE, would get boring. So my friends and I would sneak off and come under here!”

“Wait, how was I boring-”

“And soon it just became tradition for us to come here. Oh look!” I reached under the huge crate and pulled out the old radio. “Wonder if it still works?” I said. I tweaked with the radio and it turned on.

Bryce sat on one of the crates, leaning his back against the steel pole. He crossed his arms on his chest. “I can see why you like this place.” He sighed in relief. I sat the radio on the crate in the middle and ‘10K Summer Nights’ by Eighty Ninety played.

I turned to look at Bryce. His eyes were closed as he inhaled the summer night breeze. To think that three weeks ago we were just friends hanging out. Now, we’re dating.

“Mind if I?” I asked, pointing to his thigh.

“Not at all.” He said. He adjusted himself. I laid my head on his thigh. Bryce started to stroke my hair, twisting my brown curls between his fingers. Then he also massaged my scalp.

“Mmm,” I moaned. “That feels nice.” I said.

“I fucking love thouching your hair.” Bryce said. I chuckled.

“Yeah? Well I like touching your strong arms.” I replied.

“When do you have to move to California?” He asked. I kinda froze at that question. Bryce and I haven’t talked about college, or anything after summer. It’s almost like this summer is a giant fever dream that neither of us wants to wake up from.

And that’s when panic set in. Is this going to be the only time I can be with Bryce? Will we never see each other after this? Will Bryce just dump me and forget anything happened while I live on?

No, he wouldn’t do that. I can only hope for optimism.

“Sometime during the beginning of August. You? When do you have to go to Ohio?” I asked.

“Also during the start of August.” He replied.

“I’m scared for uni.” I said. My chest began to hurt just from thinking of living in a new place. Surrounded by new people. And experiencing new things.

“Me too, actually. I guess it’s just a part of life, ya know? Doing new things and going outside your comfort zone.” Bryce said. He continued to play with my hair, which relaxed my nerves.

“Kinda like this summer, us dating.” I replied.

“Yeah! Exactly. I never imagined myself dating a guy.” Bryce said. I got my head off his lap and sat up to meet his face. He had a small blush on his face that made him look so adorable.

I leaned in and kissed him.

“I never imagined myself dating Bryce Madden.” I said.

“I know we shouldn’t talk about it yet, but what’s gonna happen when school starts?” Bryce said. I stared into his brown eyes.

“I-I don’t know. I just hope it doesn’t go down in flames.” I said.

“I guarantee you it wont.” Bryce hugged me close to him.

20. Rainy Day

Bryce’s POV

Max and I layed on his couch watching a movie on the TV. We had plans to go out for a random adventure until it started raining. Since I was already here, we figured we might as well just stay in and get comfortable.

Max’s mom was away, taking their cat to the vet cause she preggo.

“Let’s watch this, please!” Max said.

“Uhhh… no! I don’t like musicals.” I said.

“Aw come on! I do!! It’ll be fun. This is like, one of the best musicals.” Max said. He gave me puppy eyes which sadly worked.

“Fine. Play it.” I said in defeat.

“YAY! Thank you!” Max gave me a kiss which I guess was reparations for letting him decide the movie.

The rain outside began crashing on the window. Something about the sound of rain just calmed me down. I hugged Max closer to me as he munched on a bag of chips that were meant for our adventure. The blanket over us was warm.

The movie started and the scene opened with a highway in Los Angeles and people danced on top of cars.

“God, this scene is a masterpiece.” Max said. He mouthed along to the songs.

“Just sing it, baby. It’s fine.” I said to Max. He blushed hard and covered his mouth.

“I guess if you don’t mind.” He responded.

Max began singing the lyrics. His voice was… ethereal. So soft but yet so powerful. I simply just stared at him singing. When he sang, it looked like he was in a comfort zone. Just zoned out from reality.

The song ended. I just stared at Max in shock.

“Oh God. I sounded like nails on a chalkboard, huh?” He began to panic.

“No no no. You were actually really good. Have you ever thought about singing?” I asked.

“Kinda. But I’m way too shy for that.” He said.

“Your voice is too good to be kept a secret.” I said.

I hugged Max close to my body and we continued to watch the movie. Not gonna lie, it’s pretty good.

“Oh no.” Max said.

“What’s wrong?” I turned to him. The screen has the words ‘Five Years Later’.

“This scene.” Max said.

I honestly just watched the movie. The ending montage though, was depressing. I heard sniffling and saw Max crying into the blanket.

“It’s just so tragic. They love each other but now they’re successful and reached their dreams but what does it matter if they aren’t together!” Max cried.

“Eh. Mid movie.” I said. Max just glared at me.

“I hope you never lose what you love.” He sobbed harder into the pillow. The end credit for the movie was an instrumental of the opening song.

“Nope. Never!” I said. I pulled Max and clutched him close. “I’ll never let you go.” I said. He stopped crying and just looked at me.

“Wait. You… love me?” He asked. My eyes widened upon realizing what I had basically said.

“I-I…” I sighed. “Yes, Max. I love you.” I said. My eyes welled up with tears.

“Look who’s crying now.” Max said. He buried his head into my pecs. “I love you too, you big dummy.” He said.

“Hey, you’re getting your tears on my shirt.” I said.

“Then let’s take it off.” He said. I wasn’t expecting him to actually pull my shirt off. We were panting from our scrimmage and just stared at each other.

I pulled Max in and made him sit on my thighs. Our kiss began to become steamier and this time I took Max’s shirt off.

Where was this going?

bye! i love you all!

21. Awkward

Maxwell’s POV

Bryce removed my shirt off. I covered my chest, feeling self conscious about how I looked compared to Bryce.

“Hey, don’t cover yourself.” Bryce lifted my chin so I met his eyes. “You’re really beautiful. Most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” He said. I blushed as Bryce said that.

My hands began to wander down his body. I touched all parts of his chest, feeling hard muscle and slight hair. Bryce continued to kiss my neck and began to thrust upwards onto me. I was basically riding him at this point.

“Max.” Bryce breathed out. I turned up to look at those brown captivating eyes. “Are you a virgin?” He asked. I nodded in embarrassment.

“Mmhmm. Sorry.” I said.

“No need to apologize. I’ll be careful with you.” He said. His arms came around my waist and held me.

Soon our pants were off. Our dicks were standing tall. I took him in my hands and jerked him off while we kissed. I sucked him off like I did at the tree. Bryce also sucked me off. He was a bit nervous at first, but like the man he is, he got the hang of it.

I basically forgot where we were for a moment. The rain ceased from my ears and the intermittent taps on the window became a small sound in the music we were creating.

After a while, the two of us laid naked on the couch. His body overpowered mine. I moaned underneath me as he took me. His thrusts felt like ecstasy.

“B-Bryce.” I moaned out.

“Max! God I love you so much.” Bryce said.

Bryce kept thrusting into me. Never did I expect to lose my virginity so soon, let alone to Bryce. It was a completely new feeling that I never wanted to end.

After we finished, I caught my breath. Bryce hugged me close to his body.

“Normally I never stay after hooking up with anyone.” Bryce said.

“But?” I asked.

“You aren’t just anyone. You’re my boyfriend.” Bryce hugged me tighter.

“Never let go.” I closed my eyes.

“I promise I won’t.” Soon Bryce ended up letting me go when the door opened.

“Sweetie, Luna is having triplets- OH GOD!” Mom screamed when she opened the door. Our house layout had the couch in direct line of sight of the front door.

“MOM!” I yelled and pulled the blanket hastily over Bryce’s and I’s body. My face was red in embarrassment.

“I- I’ll wait outside.” Mom stuttered and closed the door quickly.

“Now my mom knows I’m a slut!” I said. I stood up and began to quickly put on my clothes.

“Relax. Your mom knows you’re 18.” Bryce began to put his clothes on.

“Yeah! But she doesn’t know I’m gay! FUCK!” I yelled.

After putting our clothes on, we walked outside to see mom and Luna on the rocking chair.

“Bye, Mrs. Knox.” Bryce waved to my mom like nothing happened. My face was red, hiding my face behind my hands. I saw Bryce hop on his bike and mount it. He gave me a wink before riding off. I turned to my mom who gave me a longing stare while Luna purred on her lap.

“So, that’s why you’ve been spending so much time with Bryce.” Mom said. Luna hopped off and walked into our house like she owned it, leaving mom outside with me.

“Mom. I-I was gonna tell you sooner.” I stuttered out, hoping she didn’t care about it.

“Tell me you were gay? Or dating Bryce, the quarterback? Or that you had sex?” Mom tilted her head. Tears flooded my eyes.

“Mom! I’m-I’m sorry.” I began crying. Mom came up to me and hugged me.

“Sweetie. I knew you were gay the first time we danced around the living room singing Born This Way. And while Bryce was unexpected, I’m not upset. Just make sure he treats you right. As for the sex, just make sure you use protection and clean up.” Mom said. “We’re gonna have the

talk later.” Mom said and walked into the house.

“Mom! No!! Don’t make this anymore awkward!!” I yelled. I walked into the house and shut the door and began to stop my mom from grabbing a banana and an unused condom.

bye! i love you all!

22. You’re my universe

Bryce’s POV

I followed Max on our bikes as we rode to a new direction. Max had explained everything that happened to his mom. The talk they had and how she accepted him. The back of mind kinda wished I could easily come out like that.

But have you ever heard of a gay football player. The media would attack me and my career would be over in an instance. Which begs the question.

Where was this relationship going?

“Follow me.” Max said and got off his bike. I followed him and made it on a paved road.

“So where are we now?” I asked. The sun had begun to set.

“This is the road that leads out of town.” Max said. I stood next to him and looked out.

The road extended far, passing several fields of corn and wheat. I wondered, really wondered, where I could travel from here. And if Max would follow me. I would gladly follow him.

The many more adventures that await us in the future.

The sun had completely set. Just like the field we went to during the beginning of summer, the stars were bright and sprinkled the sky.

I turned to see Max. I sighed.

His blue eyes matched the cosmic smoothie. His freckles matched the stars and the possible constellations waiting to be drawn. His hair curls looked like infinite galaxies. And his tan skin gave off a beautiful glow that matched the warmth of the sun.

“Max?” I said. My eyes began to fill with tears. Max turned to look me in the eyes.

“Bryce?” He asked.

“Remember when we first saw the stars?” I asked. Max nodded. “When you were looking at the stars with all your love, I felt jealous. Cause you had something you love so much. The look in your eyes said it all.” I began to cry a bit.

“Oh, Bryce.” Max touched my face.

“That look, I feel it when I look at you.” I said.

“What are you saying, Bryce?” Max asked. His innocent eyes were begging me to say what I wanted to say.

“You’re my universe.” I said. “My entire life.”

Max hugged me and sobbed.

“I don’t want summer to end. I want to spend every moment with you. We’re meant to be one.” Max sobbed lightly, holding tight onto my body as if I would disappear in an instant.

“Let’s make a promise. A while back I said if this was going to be a yearly thing. Let’s make it a yearly thing.” I said to Max, recalling what I told him in the diner.

“You mean, meet up every summer here and hang out?” He asked. I nodded.

“Yeah. And we’ll call everyday. Cause I feel like I’ll go insane if I don’t hear your voice.” I said.

“So… you’re agreeing to continue our relationship?” He asked, a hint of happiness in his voice. I bent down and picked up Max and carried him in my arm. We both laughed into the night sky, ignoring all our problems.

“Yes, Max! I’ll never let you go!” I said. I twirled us and laughed.

“Alright!” He giggled. I stopped spinning us and stared at him with a smile on my face. “Next summer, we’ll meet at Freezy’s and everything will go back to normal.” He said.

“Sounds like a plan!” I said. I kissed Max, not sure when our last kiss will be for a while.

“You better keep your end of the deal.” Max said.

“Would I ever hurt you?” I asked. Max looked like he was thinking about it. “Hey? Are you actually hesitating?” I asked and lightly punched his arm.

“Silly! No! You would never hurt me. I’ve only known you for a few months but it feels like a lifetime.” He soflty spoke and looked up at me with so much love.

“Like I’ve known you since the beginning of the universe.” I said.

I laid us on the grass and we looked up at the stars.

“Never stop loving me.” He said.

“I won’t. I love you, Max.” I said.

And I intend on keeping him in my life.

bye! i love you all!

23. Years

Bryce’s POV

6

YEARS

LATER

“Babe, the party’s starting soon!” I yelled. I put on my jacket and fastened the buttons.

I went to a secret drawer and pulled out the small velvet box. The 25k ring was now snuggled in my pocket. Tonight was the night.

“Come on, babe! We don’t wanna be late.” I yelled back. The sound of footsteps came down the stairs. “Finally! Let’s go.” I said.

“Sorry my hair needed fixing.” Lucy, my girlfriend of two years, came up and kissed me.

I grabbed my car keys and began walking to the front door. The TV was on and on a gossip channel. The woman was talking about some celebrity gossip. I wouldn’t have cared until I heard a name that breaks my heart everytime I think of it.

“Last night, Max Knox, four-time Grammy award winner, was spotted with a new guy. If dating, this may be the singer’s third lover since the start of the year. The singer got his fame three years ago when he released his first single, ‘I Was Your Universe’ which landed him in the spotlight. Coming up! A timeline of Max’s long list of lovers.” The woman said.

I turned to look at the TV. There was a picture of Max, still looking so adorable, and holding hands with a tall guy with black wavy hair. But I knew Max, and there was no love in them. Just then, the TV turned off.

“Let’s go!” Lucy sternly said. We walked out of the large house. Being in the NFL for two years already, I was able to buy a house for the both of us.

We reached the party hosted by a friend who was celebrating his new reality TV show. I greeted a lot of people who were either famous or wanting to be famous. I made sure to steer clear of the social climbers who just wanted a few minutes of fame.

“I’m gonna go get drinks.” I said to Lucy. Lucy ignored me and talked to some of her friends.

I walked off and went to a bar. After a few minutes of sipping on a drink, I heard loud conversations. I turned and saw… him. He walked into the room, giving everyone a dead smile while having a guy next to him.

It was Max.

I watched from the other side of the room as he chatted with other celebrities.

He’s so close, But yet, I can’t have him. All I want to do is reach out and grab him and kiss him. Like I used to do before I fucked everything up.

Max turned and saw me at the bar. He said nothing, didn’t smile. But even from this distance, I can see the pain in his eyes.

I got up from my seat and went and mingled with other people. As long as I avoid Max, I’m sure we can prevent opening up a deep wound.

It’s been years since I’ve last seen Max.

It wasn’t his fault. It was mine.

And I’ll never forget the look on his face when he ran away, crying his eyes out after what I said to him. His broken voice pleading and his hands trying not to let go.

I broke the promise, I let him go.

And then I met Lucy. But I don’t love her.

I love Max.

The stress and chills up in my heart began to take a heavy toll on my mind and heart. I needed to get away and just think for a moment.

I entered an empty room away from the hustle and bustle. The empty room was dark except for a bedside lamp. I opened the balcony door and stepped out.

Looking up, I saw the stars. Except here, they aren’t as bright. The stars in my life have dimmed, no longer shining like they used to.

Tears began to fall down my face. Why did I fuck everything up?

Just then, the door opened. I heard the person’s body land on the bed. They sighed.

I reentered the room and by the faintest glow of the lamp, it was Max.

His body laid on the bed. He rubbed his eyes. Then he turned his head and saw me.

We both looked at each, longing for each other’s embraces.

bye! i love you all!

24. Finale

Maxwell’s POV

When I saw Bryce in the same room as me, my mind panicked. I began to get up and reach for the exit when Bryce called out for me.

The way he said my voice almost sounded foreign. Almost like he hasn’t said it in years and now hurts when he says it.

“Max.” My name came from his lips. I turned to look at him. He was crying. He was vulnerable in front of me.

“Max?” He said again. I almost wanted to reach out and stroke his hair like I used to do. Instead, I was reminded of what he did. And then anger fueled me.

“What?!” I spat out. Bryce jolted back at my harsh tone.

“Can we talk?” Bryce asked. Seriously? Now he wants to talk. He had two years! TWO YEARS! And then four years after that. I haven’t said a word to this man for so long. And everyday I try to forget him.

But it’s impossible to forget someone you love.

“I’d rather not.” I said. I turned and reached for the door. Bryce’s body soon blocked the door. His large hands held my wrist in place. I wanted to punch him and tell him to get away. But I missed his touch.

“Please, Max.” His voice broke. “Please.” He pleaded.

“Fine.” I said. Neither of us moved. We just wanted to stay in this position. I turned away so I didn’t meet his eyes. I wanted to cry, but my emotions at this point were null. I cried so much for this man, he doesn’t deserve these tears.

“I-” Bryce said. He sniffled.

Then, he turned my head and kissed me.

I slapped him but his lips never left. Our faces were once again back. He let out tears which fell onto my face.

Just like I remembered.

“I still love you, Max. I think I always will.” Bryce said softly when we pulled apart. I simply shook my head.

“No, you don’t, Bryce. If you loved me, you wouldn’t have thrown me away so easily.” I said. I didn’t care if I cried now.

“But I do! No one will ever be as good as you! You made me feel like I was worth something! I was so stupid for leaving you!” Bryce said. He was full blown crying.

“You are stupid.” I said with a hint of anger in my voice.

“I’m sorry Max.” He said. He got on his knees and looked up at me with tears in his eyes. “I’m so sorry.” He cried out.

“I have to go.” I said.

“Wait!” He said. I looked into his eyes that captivated me for so long. There was that look again. The one that showed he actually loves me. “Can I get one more kiss?” He said, a longing look in his eyes.

“No, Bryce.” I said. “If I kiss you, it’ll make me want more. And I know I can’t have you.” I leaned my head down. Bryce got up and stood in front of me. I pulled his face down and kissed him on the cheek.

“Max…” He tried pleading.

“Goodbye, Bryce. I love you. And I always will.” I said. I exited the room, leaving Bryce and my love behind.

I met up with my “boyfriend” whom I am just hooking up with. After sitting and being reminded of Bryce, I just wanted to leave.

“Let’s go home. I’m not feeling well.” I said to Nate. We began to exit when there were loud cheers from the center of the room.

I turned and saw Bryce, on one knee, holding out a ring to his girlfriend.

‘Will you marry me?’ I read his lips. The woman nodded and they hugged and the whole room cheered.

And all I could do was watch.

Watch as the love of my life becomes engaged to someone else. Someone who isn’t me.

“Babe. Let’s go.” Nate said.

I was halfway out the door when I felt the need to turn around.

‘Don’t turn around’ my mind told me. But I did.

I turned and saw Bryce looking at me with sad eyes. Everyone behind him was cheering except him. Surrounded by all this wealth and luxury and now a fiancee, but can’t even find happiness.

“I love you.” He mouthed to me as a tear ran down his face.

“I love you too.” I muttered back.

“Max!” Nate called out.

A final look, I gave a small smile to Bryce. Probably the last one.

Bryce returned the smile.

And with that, I walked out of the house to a lonely future. A future where I still love Bryce.
