LOVE UNDER CONTRACT

This is a work of fiction. Names, Characters, Business, Events and Incidents are the products of the author’s imagination. Additionally, the cover picture is not owned by me.

                           P R O L O G U E

The ink had barely dried on the contract before I felt the weight of my fate settling upon me. I glanced across the table, my eyes locking onto the stranger who would soon become my husband .

𝖫𝗒𝗌𝖺𝗇𝖽𝖾𝗋 𝖦𝗋𝖺𝖾𝗌𝗈𝗇 𝖱𝗒𝗅𝖺𝗇.

The name echoed in my mind like a curse. His piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into my very soul, as if daring me to defy the arrangement that had brought us together.

I knew nothing of him, except that he was the eldest son of the Rylan family – our family’s sworn enemies for generations. The resentment between our clans ran deeper than blood, and now, I was bound to him by law.

The room around us melted away, leaving only the sound of my own ragged breathing. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of uncertainty, with no lifeline in sight.

“𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺?” Lysander low, cold voice cut through the silence, his eyes narrowing slightly as he awaited my response.

I swallowed hard, forcing a mask of calm onto my face. “𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭,” I lied, my voice steady despite the turmoil brewing inside.

With a dismissive flick of his wrist, he turned away, leaving me to shiver in the wake of his indifference. “ We’ll be married in two weeks ,“ he said over his shoulder, his tone dripping with disdain. “ I

expect you to be ready .“

I watched him walk away, feeling like I’d just been punched in the gut. Our contractual bond was going to be a prison, and I was trapped…or so I thought?

I am 𝖬𝖺𝗒𝖼𝖾𝖾 𝖠𝗅𝖾𝗑𝖺𝗇𝖽𝖾𝗋 𝖦𝗋𝖾𝗒, a name that has become synonymous with excellence in the world of acting. But I didn’t become famous just because of my good looks. It’s the blood, sweat, and tears I’ve poured into every role I’ve taken on. The numerous national and international awards that line my shelves are testaments to my dedication, my passion, and my unwavering commitment to my craft.

Acting isn’t just a job for me; it’s my life’s purpose . I love bringing characters to life and telling stories that move people. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, and I know that I got here because of my own efforts.

In fact, even though I come from a wealthy and influential family, I didn’t rely on their help to get ahead. Instead, I used my own strength, perseverance, and hard work to build my career. I proved to myself that I could make it on my own, without relying on my family’s name or connections.

As I always say, “ Do what your heart wants to be .“ And my heart is set on acting.

“Maycee, how do you feel right now that you’re still the Best Actor Of This Year?”

“𝖶𝖾𝗅𝗅, I’m really grateful and didn’t expect it,” I said, trying to compose myself. “It’s like all my hard work has finally paid off. I’m thankful to all my supporters who have been with me throughout my journey. Kung wala kayo, I wouldn’t have had the courage to continue pursuing my passion.”

The audience ’awww’ed at my heartfelt response, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. The next question from the host caught me off guard.

“So, Maycee, do you have someone special in your life? Like, mayroon ka nabang natitipuhan or even started dating?”

I smiled mischievously, and the audience erupted into cheers and whispers. “Hmm… maybe?” I teased, winking at the crowd.

The room went wild, with fans screaming and commenting on who the lucky person might be. I just shook my head, sofly laugh.

“Babe, sino yon! Akala ko ba ako lang–”

“Feeling te? Ako naman talaga yung

tinutukoy

niya–“

“Shut up girls. It is me–”

As I walked off the stage, I couldn’t help but think,

Ganon na ba talaga ako ka

pogi

?

My manager quickly assisted me so I could escape the paparazzi surrounding us. My eyes were already hurting from the rapid flash of their cameras. Saho handed me glasses to ease the pain. He’s really my savior. By the way, he’s been my manager since I started my career. I’ve learned a lot from him, and I’ve also come to realize that he’s like family to me.

“Pahingi tubig… nauuhaw na akooo” parang batang ani ko habang pumasok sa van.

He rolled his eyes. “Aba’y oa mo ha, oh eto.” Ibinigay naman niya ang isang bottle ng tubig. Ininom ko naman kaagad, tuyong-tuyo na kasi ang lalamunan ko. Finally, long rest ko na talaga ngayon.

I looked at the award. I won. I grab and look at it.

Oh, si dad pala…

[ Maycee

, go home. We’ll

talk

something important. ]

Important? Unbelievable, huh? But he didn’t even bother to it, para bang normal lang iyon. It’s pissing me off.

Only if needed .

I went inside, and the maids greeted me. I greeted them as well. Nothing unusual, though. It’s still the same mansion I used to live in. No emergency, or maybe na bankrupt na si dad? No, imposible naman yun. My dad was a billionaire and wise man.

“Sit. They should arrive now.”

“Uh… okay?” I smiled a bit.

Bata pa kami no’n, we were hurt, of course, ngunit mas nasaktan doon si dad. I mean, no one can deal with the pain of losing the one you treasure the most. But… it’s been a decade since mom passed away, and hanggang ngayon, ganoon pa rin ang pakikitungo niya sa amin. I couldn’t help but wish that “if mom was here, we would be a great, happy family.”

I hate it, really. It would be a long, boring day.

“I’m sorry if we’re a bit late, Mr. Grey.”

Aha, I knew it! We’re gonna talk about business deals na naman.

Dad smiled. “It’s okay, wait, where is your son?” The man shook his head.

“Oh, is this your son? He’s all grown up as a fine young man, huh.” he quickly shifted the question.

I couldn’t help but yawn. Mana

kaya ako kay mama no’.

They started talking about something - they called it “business matters.” I put on some earbuds and listened to music so that it would be less boring. A minute after… bigla lamang silang tumingin sa akin. Then, I put away my earbuds.

“Ikaw talagang bata ka, kahit kailan,” my dad said, with a hint of disappointment. I looked away.

“Maycee, right?” I nodded. “It’s nice to meet you, sorry if you can’t see your soon-to-be husband. Nasa America pa kasi, and you know, handling business matters.”

My jaw dropped.

“Dad, what’s the meaning sa sinabi niya?–” He gave me some papers, and I quickly read them.

“What the… dad, ano to? And why is my signature already here?” Naguguluhan kong sabi sa kanya.

Dad rolled his eyes. “Ahh, stupid kid. Hindi ka talaga nakinig sa usapan, no? Ano pa bang maasahan ko sayo?” He shook his head. I bit my lips.

Did he think I’d agree to marry a stranger, and worse, a guy? Is dad thinking I’m gay? What the!

“I know what you’re thinking. My decision is final. Besides, you’re not totally bound to him. After 5 years… I agreed that you can divorce him. Just bear with it, son.”

“But dad! What about my career? Ayaw kong iwan iyon, you know that I really love– You can still continue to do whatever you want. It’s just a contract. “ sabi niya, and then he left.

“Oh… good?” was all I could say.

I was left with so many questions swirling in my mind. Why do good luck and bad luck have to happen on the same day? And one thing… I hate the fact that Dad didn’t even let me know or explain my side. Gusto niya na lagi ko siyang sinusunod. He wants me to be obedient forever! I have the right naman to express my opinion, to say if I agree or disagree. It’s suffocating.

But still, I’m relieved na hindi ko kailangan iwan ang career ko.

My phone rang, and I quickly answered it.

“Maycee, mayroon tayong meeting for your upcoming movie. I’ll pick you up.” Then I hung up.

Medyo nabuhayan ako, and the bitterness started to fade. I went to my room and changed my clothes. I’m now wearing a leather jacket, black pants, and a black cap. I looked at myself. Cheking. You’re so handsome,

Maycee

!

I should just set aside what happened earlier and focus on my passion. Whoever that person is that I was forced to marry, matalisod ka sana.

2

As I entered the room, I was surprised to see the director of the movie already seated. I hadn’t even auditioned for the role–they had chosen me outright. I recalled my early days as an extra in dramas and movies, but now the tables had turned, and they were offering me a lead role.

The director began explaining the concept of the boy love movie, and at first, I was hesitant to accept. It was my first time taking on an LGBTQ+ role, and I worried it might affect my charisma and poginess sa mga babae. I’m not that homophobic, it’s like bit strange and awkward for me as a man. I mean… I’m always bit awkward, but I’ve learned to overcome it because of my passion for acting.

However, my manager Saho’s words echoed in my mind, “Why not try it?” He encouraged me to take on the challenge, saying it would be a new learning experience and a chance to showcase my versatility as an actor.

I decided to take the risk and agreed to the role.

After all, I had nothing to lose, and I was curious about exploring this type of storyline. The plot revolved around two college rivals competing in academics, sports, and even romance. Their constant one-upmanship eventually gave way to unexpected feelings, and boom they fell in love.

“Maycee, is this okay for you? I mean this is the first time na you would act about boy love romance…and it would be bit awkward for you. But if you don’t want, hindi ka naman namin pipilitin.” the director bit worriedly said.

I smiled and respond. “Yeah, it’ll bit awkward for me…as you said na first time ko to na ganito ang genre. So, I’m bit intrigued and excited on how would I portray this role. Don’t worry anything direk, I’m in.”

All I could respond with was a smile, overwhelmed by the many things he had said.

“We’ll start to shoot on Thursday, dahil bukas you’ll meet the male lead at iba pang mga artista,” pagtatapos ni direk sa pag-uusap namin.

Inilahad ko ang aking kamay. “Okay, direk. Looking forward to work with you.” Tinanggap niya ang aking kamay at kami’y nagkamay.

“Same to you, Maycee.”

Nagkasama na kami sa ilang proyekto, but this… Arghh. Nakakailang

eh.

Nakakailang

talaga.

“Maycee, nice to work with you again,” sabi niya, with warm tone.

Tiningnan ko siya. “Oh… me too, Lucas.” I tried to not stutter when talking to him.

“Well, we’ll get along much this time, right? Honestly… It’s my first time too and I’m honored that is it you.” he exclaimed.

I was bit taken aback what he said.

“I’m really honored too. Let’s practice?” I snapped.

He smiled. “Sure…”

“ Dad … I’m home“

I gulp.

I was about to say hello when he turn around and look to me with a cold eyes. After a moment of staring, he finally seated.

I lend my left hand for handshake.

“It’s nice to meet you, I’m Maycee Alexa– I know. It’s all written on that paper. “ binawi ko naman kaagad ang kamay kong inilahad ko sa kanya.

Pinahiya ako do’n ah.

“So, let’s get along?” I quickly shifted the atmosphere.

He didn’t respond. Napahiya ulit ako. He’s making me piss. And I tried to not be intimidated.

I signed the papers. Dad said I haven’t signature the other documents at siya rin.

The ink had barely dried on the contract before I felt the weight of my fate settling upon me. I glanced across the table, my eyes locking onto the stranger who would soon become my husband.

𝖫𝗒𝗌𝖺𝗇𝖽𝖾𝗋 𝖦𝗋𝖺𝖾𝗌𝗈𝗇 𝖱𝗒𝗅𝖺𝗇.

I watched him walk away, feeling like I’d just been punched in the gut. Our contractual bond was going to be a prison, and I was trapped…or so I thought?

3

I leaned my head, thinking that he was just like my dad - no, worse. I felt like I was being interrogated, and he was clearly analyzing me. He looked at me as if checking for any factory defects… I mean, para bang kini-kilatis niya ako. During our small talk, I felt like I was staring death in his face. I tried not to slip up and, luckily, I managed to keep my cool.

Just then, my dad walked in, and I knew we were in for a long lecture tonight.

“Did you know that he waited for almost two hours just to see you?” my dad said angrily, his nostrils flaring. He looked like Hiccup’s dragon.

Was that even true? He waited for me? Oh right, the business deal. No malice, Maycee.

I rolled my eyes. “He could have just signed the papers without me, is my presence really that important? As far as I know, this is just a contract marriage.” I couldn’t help but sound sarcastic.

He slammed his hand on the table, making me gulp. That meant he was really, really angry. He loudly called out my name, but I didn’t look back.

If you’re wondering why I left without saying goodbye, it’s because my dad wouldn’t stop lecturing me. And, honestly, it was annoying. He kept repeating himself, and I’d already memorized his words.

Of course, I didn’t want to hear those hurtful words coming from his mouth.

It all started when I chose to become an actor instead of following in his footsteps. He thinks I’m a failure , a disgrace to our family name, because everyone in our family is business-minded - it’s in their blood. And they all think na ma-inherit ko ito. Do I deserve blame for having different aspirations?

I shook my head and fell asleep. I shouldn’t stress myself, it might make me sick kung dibdibin ko pa.

Two weeks later, the wedding day finally arrived. I wore a white tuxedo and held a bouquet of flowers. I wondered why we needed a ceremony for a marriage that was just a business deal. Couldn’t we have just signed the papers and called it a day? After all, we didn’t love each other.

Well, Lysander’s mother insisted that the wedding had to be grand - like something out of reality TV. Ugh , no one will ever know that I married this guy, if anyone finds out. I’m sure many would be shocked to learn that Maycee got married to their dream guy. I did some research and found out that he’s a popular businessman and model - even more famous than I am. I’d heard his name before, but I never bothered to learn more about him. Now, I had to .

As I walked towards the altar, I felt like I was taking heavy steps. It wasn’t that I was heavy, but the tension in the air added weight to each step. My family was there, and so was his. I had no idea why they were staring at me so intensely. Baka naman may

dumi

ako sa mukha?

So…final na to? No turning back? Maybe my dad was just joking. I glanced at my dad, and we exchanged a look. He just rolled his eyes and nudged me towards my soon-to-be husband. I felt defeated and pitied.

If you were in my shoes, marrying someone you didn’t love - worse, didn’t even know… Magiging

masaya ka ba? ’Di ba Hindi?

We exchanged vows, put on our rings, and did what the wedding ceremony required. When the priest declared that we were married and needed to seal it with a kiss, I panicked. I’d kissed many women before, but this felt awkward. Maybe a handshake would have been better?

I took a chance to whisper to him.

“Hey, let’s do a handshake instead?” I said directly, without looking at him.

Did I really just say “hey” to him? That was so informal. Maybe he’d think I was disrespecting him.

Yet, he didn’t respond.

As I extended my hand for a handshake, expecting him to do the same, I was totally wrong. He took my hand and kissed my fingers. I was shocked. Really. I didn’t expect that.  After that, everyone clapped.

Maybe, may ear problem ata yung lalaking iyon.

Following the wedding ceremony, he left, saying he had to attend to some business. That guy was really a workaholic. I had canceled my shooting schedule for this, and it was a good thing no one would find out that we were married. I felt relieved.

“Pagpapasenyahan mo na sana siya iho ha, he’s just like that. He really loves his work.” napahawak naman ako sa dibdib ng magsalita ang mom niya sa likod ko. Kakagulat naman, bigla akong inatake sa puso.

I smiled. “Ahh, ganon po ba. Okay lang. Still…this is just a contract.”

She looked at me sadly. Did I say something wrong?

“Honestly, we had a similar situation, Maycee. I was forced into it too. I thought it was just a contract,” she said, then her demeanor changed to sunny. “But then…I realized I fell in love with him. And I’m really thankful that I’m bound to him. So, Maycee, I’m definitely sure that you and my son will end up together. I’m praying for that.” She winked at me.

I smiled awkwardly.

“Well, sa case ko po kasi Mrs– Drop the formality, just call me

tita

. “ I smiled anxiously.

“I mean tita, however I’m a man, and he’s a man too. It’s impossible for us to develop feelings for each other.” I honestly said.

Her brow twitched. “ Well…yeah, that’s true, but love doesn’t define by gender. And I know that you two will truly —  Oh, Maycee, I’m sorry if you feel uncomfortable. Just ignore what my wife said, okay? “ her husband interrupted her.

I nodded.

Tita was about to continue, but her husband pulled her away. I let out a sigh of relief. I couldn’t help but think about what she said, and I chuckled. Why would we develop feelings for each other when he clearly didn’t like me at all? And his words during the wedding ceremony were so forced. So do I.

It’s so funny, right? Ako lang ba yung natawa?

“You’re so happy, huh,” someone said, stopping my laughter. I turned around, Lysander?

Baka akala niyang sinasapian ako.

“Ahh…can’t I be?” I replied, raising an eyebrow. He shook his head, a hint of amusement dancing on his lips.

“I thought you were still at the company?” I asked, recalling how he had excused himself earlier.

“Yeah, I was…but everything’s taken care of now,” he replied, his tone matter-of-fact.

I nodded, and he turned to me with a questioning gaze. “Maycee, right?”

“What?” I asked.

“Let’s make a rule?” he said seriously that makes me curious of it.

4

I couldn’t help but grin at his words. It was the same rule that I say during the drama I’d acted in before.

“Lastly, we’ll act as married. Always wear your ring.” I blinked twice, wondering if I’d heard him right.

“Wait, why do I need to wear it always? You know I’m an actor, and I can’t just let it slide—” I protested, trying to reason with him.

“Just make up a reason, easy as that,” he replied nonchalantly, napataas agad ang kilay ko.

“Then, ikaw? Hindi? Aren’t you going to do the same? It’s unfair if I’m the only one—” I pointed out, feeling a twinge of irritation. “I’ll do the same, don’t worry.” he assured me, his expression softening slightly.

My eyes widened, and my heart skipped a beat as I processed his words. I tried to brush off the feeling, telling myself it was just my imagination playing tricks on me. But the way he looked at me, with an intensity that made my skin prickle, left me feeling unsettled. I just shrugged it off, telling my self na humahanga

lang ako sa kanya.

I regain myself. “They would think that you’re literally married, hindi ba pwedeng wala nalang tong rule na ito? Maybe, change it somehow… So that you and I won’t face some problems?” I honestly said with pa-action action na ginagawa.

“You’re really…” He covered his face with one hand, chuckling. “Just do it, and so what? I am really married… to you.” he continued and look at me seriously.

The wind blew, carrying a chill that caressed my face, leaving me feeling unsettled. Out of blue, bigla namang pumasok si dad at kinausap si Lysander. He excuses himself and I was left alone here in the balcony, continue my drinking na naudlot kanina.

As I glanced around the room, I saw our guests chatting and laughing together. I recognized a few of them - stakeholders and partners of my dad’s company. I furrowed my brow, wondering why my dad had invited these people. What if they spilled the beans or, worse, had a spy among them who wanted to ruin my dad’s reputation? I mean, I was married to a man, after all. They would jump at the chance to bring my dad down.

I shrugged off my concerns, telling myself I was being paranoid . After all, I was in the US now, were same-sex marriage was legal, unlike in the Philippines. But I couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. Why had my dad excluded even one of my friends from the guest list? Who wouldn’t feel annoyed about that? Now, these people were smiling and laughing at me, while I was exhausted.

The celebration had finally come to an end, and our guests were leaving the mansion. I couldn’t help but smile, relieved that it was all over. I had been struggling to stay awake, and my dad had been pinching me about dozing off and nearly falling onto the floor.

My dad also bid farewell to us, as well as his parents. I struggled to hold back my laughter as his mom was being overly dramatic. Her words kept replaying in my head. As she said…

“Please, with all your heart, take care of my precious son! He may come across as a bit rough around the edges, with a tough exterior that can be intimidating, BUT beneath that rugged facade lies a heart of GOLD! He’s kind, gentle, and caring, with a work ethic that’s simply unmatched! But don’t worry, he knows exactly how to balance his busy schedule to give you his undivided attention, showering you with love and care that will make your heart skip a beat!”

“Can you stop laughing right now?” He said clearly annoyed.

I stop and take a deep breath. “Sorry, can’t help. Nakakatawa talaga kasi. ehemm…tatahimik na po.” tinaliman niya ako ng mata kaya sinunod ko nalang siya baka magalit pa to at palayasin niya ako sa bahay niya.

Magsisinungaling talaga ako kong sasabihin kong ang pangit ng mansiyon niya. Their mansion was incredibly beautiful. It was like walking into a dream. The design was a perfect mix of old and new styles. Big windows let in lots of natural light, making the rooms feel alive. The walls had intricate patterns, showing off the owners’ good taste. The garden was a beautiful oasis, with lush trees, colorful flowers, and plants adding vibrancy to the surroundings. Sa sobrang ganda,

matutulala

ka na lamang at

mababaliw

bigla.

“This is your room, for now.” he said, his eyes locked on mine as he pointed to the door ahead.

I nodded as response.

“Let’s call this a night.” he said finally breaking the silent.

I retorted, “Yeah…have a good night Rylan.” trying to sound casual despite the tension between us.

“Just call me, Grae” he replied, his voice low and smooth.

“Okay…Grae.”

The next morning, life returned to normal. I went about my usual routine, doing everything I normally did after waking up. After finishing my morning ritual, I had a quick breakfast before leaving the mansion. As I was about to head out, one of the maids informed me that Grae had left early for a meeting.

“Sir, Grae left early for a meeting,’” she said, her voice soft and respectful. “Pinapasabi niya po na huwag niyong kalimutan ang rules na you both agreed on.” She handed me a note with a few scribbled lines.

I looked down at the note, my eyes scanning the unfamiliar handwriting. “ Don’t forget, our deal starts today. Be good, and we’ll get along just fine.“

Infairness, maganda ang pagkakasulat niya. Naiingit tuloy ako. As if naman na I would break the rule.

I folded the note and tucked it into the trash can and tuluyang umalis sa bahay.

For the first time since I started working on this project, I arrived late on set. The crew quickly got to work, dressing me in my costume and touching up my makeup. They raised an eyebrow at my tardiness, but didn’t press me for an explanation. Maybe they assumed I had a real emergency or problem. Just as I was getting settled, the director yelled out.

“In 3, 2, 1, school scene! Take 1. ACTION !” The cameraman’s voice cut through the sudden bustle of activity as the scene sprang to life.

Then…I act my role.

[

Chapter One: Welcome to Chaos]

I walked carefully, eyes darting left and right as I took in the unfamiliar city. Everything felt too big—too loud, too fast. Ibang-iba sa tahimik at simpleng buhay sa probinsiya.

I paused in front of the university gate.

This was it. The school I applied to for a scholarship. And I got in. I still couldn’t believe it. I’m here. In my dream university.

I take a deep breath and try to calm myself.

Pero to be honest? Kabado ako. Naiilang.

I wasn’t trying to be paranoid, but… people really were staring. I gripped my bag tighter and whispered to myself, “ Kaya ko to .”

Then, just as I looked up— bam!

Nagulat. What the hell?

“Sorry?” malamig niyang sabi. “ You just bumped into someone and rudely go without even looking at me ?“

I didn’t even look at his face. I was too embarrassed. I was already turning to leave when he grabbed my wrist.

I froze.

“Sorry?” His voice was sharp, low. “You bump into someone and don’t even look at them properly? That’s kinda rude.”

Napilitan akong tumingin sa kaniya.

Oh.

He was tall. His skin had that golden glow like he belonged on magazine covers. Sharp jaw. Clean cut. His eyes? Piercing.

Intimidating.

“I’m really sorry po,” mahina kong sagot.

“Do I look that old to you?”

Nag-init ang tenga ko. Shoot.

“Ah… hindi naman. Sanay lang po ako—ay, sanay lang ako magsalita nang gano’n,” sabay bitaw ko sa awkward na ngiti.

He chuckled. Oh God, ang ganda ng ngiti niya.

“You’re cute.”

My eyes widened. “Huh?”

“Cute,” he repeated, then smirked. “Like a lost puppy.”

Before I could defend myself, he leaned in a little closer.

“Let me guess. You’re from the province, first time in the city, scared of crowds, and probably still ask permission before opening the fridge at home?”

I blinked. “How did you—”

“Figures.” He let go of my wrist. “I’m Theo, by the way.”

“Aki,” I replied, almost instinctively.

He gave me a once-over, then crossed his arms. “Well, Aki, lucky you. I’ve been assigned as your student guide today.”

Great. Just great.

He looked like the type who’d eat someone like me alive.

Theo smirked again, clearly enjoying himself. “Don’t worry. I’ll take really. Really good care of you.”

And just like that, I realized… I might’ve survived getting into this school—but surviving him?

That’s a different story.

“CUT!”

The director shouted. I immediately broke eye contact with Lucas. I felt… weird. Maybe because it’s my first time doing a scene like that? Still, I didn’t want to be rude, so I smiled at him.

Derek clapped enthusiastically. “Wow! You two were amazing! I swear, this is going to be a massive hit. I can feel it. Keep it up!”

We both smiled, slightly shy but proud.

“It’s because we have Maycee,” Lucas said, motioning toward me. “He’s really good at acting—it helps boost my confidence.” He even winked.

I elbowed him playfully. “I should be the one saying that. As far as we both know, you’re way better than I am.”

“Nope. You are,” he insisted.

I smirked. “You are.”

“You…” he pointed at me with narrowed eyes.

I squinted back, pissed. “Ikaw nga—”

“Okay, okay,” Derek cut in with a laugh. “You’re both really good. Honestly, I’m just honored you accepted this project.”

We both nodded, ending the moment with laughter.

I never knew this side of Lucas existed. I always thought he was rude and kind of a snob—maybe because we barely talked before. But now… maybe we’ll finally get to know each other better.

I got home around 9 PM. Medyo gabing-gabi na. Derek had invited us for dinner earlier, since tomorrow, the trailer of our movie “

Tease Me Softly

“ would be released. To be honest? The title still makes me cringe a bit. I mean— it’s not me . But it fits the film. I guess .

“Tapos na ako, Manang,” I said as soon as she asked if I’d eaten. “Kumain na po ako kanina.”

She nodded. “Ganon ba, iho? Kung okay lang, pwede mo ba itong dalhin kay Grae? Nasa working room siya. Hindi pa siya kumakain.”

“Ah, sure po. I’ll bring it to him,” I agreed without hesitation.

“Salamat, iho. Magandang gabi.”

I knocked three times on the door Manang pointed out. I was about to knock again when it opened—revealing Grae with his usual serious face. He had glasses on, his hair was a mess, but somehow… it suited him. He looked busy.

He raised a brow. That look said “What do you want?”

I held up the food. “Manang said you haven’t eaten yet, so she asked me to bring this up. You should eat first—it’s already late.”

He sighed. “You didn’t have to say yes to her. You look tired yourself. You shouldn’t be the one doing this.”

“No, it’s fine. Hindi naman gaanong kalayo working room mo and isa pa aakyat rin naman ako rito. Besides, manang she looks tired narin umakyat kaya I agreed on.” I defended manang and look at him.

He stared at me for a moment before giving a small nod. “Ha. If it’s okay with you. I’ll go back to work now. Thanks for bringing this.”

Then, just before the door closed, he added quietly, “Good night, Maycee.”

I smiled a bit. “ Good night too,

Graeson .”

I walked back to my room, collapsed on the bed, and fell asleep instantly—still in my clothes.

Too lazy to care.

I didn’t know what exactly I was supposed to feel-happy, sad, nervous? I couldn’t tell. All I knew was that I was excited to watch.

I had no plans for the day, so I was just hanging out at home. Out of boredom, I turned on the TV. I was planning to watch some soccer today. Well, I really like soccer, even though I’ve never actually played it. Also, I’m a big fan of Ronaldo.

I took a sip of my juice and crossed my legs, eyes glued to the screen.

My hands clapped instinctively when Ronaldo’s team scored.

“Nice one!” sambit ko sabay thumbs up.

“ Woah !“

“Yun… yun! Aysus, pasok ulit!”

“Umuwi na lang kayo!”

“RONALDO!!! RONALDOOO !!-”

I stopped mid-cheer when a cold, sharp voice cut through the room.

“ He’s really good, huh? Is that your crush ?“

I turned my head and saw Grae standing there, arms crossed, an unreadable look on his face. For a moment, I was confused.

Why is he-oh. Right. This is his house.

“Oh, you’re here?” I bit my lip the moment the words left my mouth.

Seriously, Maycee? That’s the best you could come up with?

“Hmm? Am I not allowed in my own house?” he said with a smirk, walking toward the couch.

I rolled my eyes, but I could feel my cheeks warming. “That’s not what I meant.”

He sat down beside me, a little too close. My heartbeat betrayed me, thudding a little faster than I wanted to admit.

“I didn’t know you liked soccer.” he said, leaning forward, elbows resting on his knees, voice calm but low.

I nodded once, trying to keep my cool. “I do.”

Silence.

I cleared my throat, forcing myself to look back at the screen. “Don’t you have, like, meetings to attend? Or an empire to build?”

“I postponed them,” he said, like it was no big deal.

That made me glance at him. “Wait, what? You postponed your meetings?”

He nodded, still not looking at me. “My assistant handled it.”

I stared. Hmm, why I’m asking him? it’s not that big deal for me. Well maybe I’m curious. He’s workaholic though. Baka, nagpapahinga lang siya.

He must’ve noticed my gaze because he finally turned his head toward me, that signature deadpan expression in place. “What?”

“Why?” The word slipped out before I could stop it. “Uhh-never mind.” I quickly looked away and took another sip of juice, hoping it would cool down the sudden heat in my cheeks…of embarrassment.

He didn’t speak for a moment.

Then, quietly, he said, “Because this is your home now, too.”

I froze.

The game was still playing in the background, the crowd roaring from the screen, but it suddenly felt so far away.

I turned to him, unsure if I heard that right. “What?”

He didn’t repeat himself. Typical . Instead, he leaned back against the couch and crossed his arms, eyes on the screen but jaw tense.

I blinked, unsure of what to do with that sentence.

This man. This cold, no-nonsense businessman who looked like he’d rather work than breathe-was trying? The thought made something twist in my chest. Uncomfortable. Confusing.

I sighed, letting myself sink further into the couch. “You really are hard to read, you know that?”

“I’m not a book.” he said flatly.

I laughed under my breath. “No kidding.”

For a moment, we just sat there in silence, watching the game, existing in the same space without arguing. It felt… strange. New. Not bad, though.

Not bad at all.

My phone suddenly rang, cutting through the soft background noise of the soccer match.

I glanced at the screen, Saho.

“Excuse me.” I muttered quickly, picking up the call and standing from the couch.

“Maycee!” Saho’s excited voice crackled through the line. “The trailer just dropped. As in ngayon lang! I sent you the link, check it. The reactions online are insane already!”

My eyes widened, the fatigue from earlier instantly replaced with a rush of energy. “Are you serious?! Wait-lemme check!”

I ended the call and hurriedly opened the message. I clicked on the link and immediately tuned out everything else around me. Well, except for one thing. Grae sitting right beside me.

Did he even know I was an actor? I wasn’t sure. Usually, I kept my work life and personal life separate, especially with him. But tonight, something felt different, lighter somehow. Maybe because after all this, I was finally ready to just rest.

I focused on the screen, watching the trailer unfold. But as I saw myself on screen, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

Why do I look so feminine here?

I bit my lip, a little embarrassed, but mostly proud. Despite my doubts, the audience seemed to love it. The trailer ended with scenes of applause and cheers from viewers, and I felt my heart swell.

I was surprised by how far I’d come, and how real it all felt, even I did it many times. It seems different maybe because it’s about boy love?

Suddenly, I realized that I forgot to put on my earbuds. My heart jumped. I glanced sideways and caught Grae’s eyes fixed on the screen.

Then it happened, the scene I dreaded. The one where Lucas, my male lead, and I were about to kiss. I swear I froze, my breath catching in my throat.

Grae’s expression was unreadable, but his eyes lingered longer than they should have.

I swallowed hard, hoping he didn’t judge me. But instead, he leaned back, crossing his arms.

“Is that… your boyfriend?” he asked, voice as cold as ever.

I blinked, tried not to laugh. “No! He’s… just my co-star.”

Grae didn’t respond right away. The silence between us stretched, thick and uncomfortable. For a moment, I wondered if he saw me differently now.

Grae cleared his throat.

“Don’t worry,” he added, softer this time. “I’m not here to judge.”

I glanced up, surprised by the gentleness in his tone.

He shrugged, standing up. “Just don’t expect me to cheer for you next time.”

I laughed nervously, feeling the strange warmth in my chest.

Maybe, just maybe , we were starting to understand each other a little better.

7

Nine months had passed since our wedding, and our interactions remained as formal as ever. Our busy careers left us little time for each other, but I always remembered the rules we’d agreed upon.

Sometimes, I wondered if I’d ever break free from those boundaries. And today, I felt like I was on the verge of doing just that.

“Um, Derek… Do I really have to do this?” I asked hesitantly.

His brow furrowed. “Yes, you do. Don’t tell me you’ve got engage kaya ayaw mong ipatanggal yang singsing.”

I quickly shook my head. “No, nothing like that.”

“Then we’re good. Prepare for take. Lights, camera, ACTION!” Derek said.

I doubt he’ll even notice. We’re both so busy, he might’ve forgotten the rule anyway. He’s a workaholic, after all. Today’s the proposal scene, the final scene for our movie. After this, we’re done. It’s been seven months of shooting it because locations changing every scene. I’ve barely had time to go home.

As I looked into Lucas’s eyes, I couldn’t help but notice his beauty. Maybe it was the way he brought Theo to life, pouring emotions and dedication into every scene. He took my hands, and I held his back, our fingers intertwining.

We slowly drew closer, our skin touching. He caressed my cheek, and I closed my eyes, savoring the moment. When I opened them again, our gazes met.

The camera rolled, capturing the intimacy of the moment. I felt lost in Lucas’s eyes, the world around us fading away. For a moment, it was just us, suspended in time.

“You’re finally mine,” he whispered, his lips grazing my forehead. Tears spilled down my cheeks as he caught them with his fingers. “You’re the melody that fills my heart with joy.”

“I couldn’t have imagined a life without you…” I whispered back.

“I’ll spend forever making you love me more,” he promised, his voice husky with emotion. “To make you mine, in every sense.”

I pouted, and he chuckled, his eyes crinkling. “You’re trying to make me cry, aren’t you?”

“Never.” he said, his voice full of tenderness. “But now, I crave the day I’ll call you mine forever… my wife.”

He raised our joined hands, the ring shining on my finger. “Forever with you is what I desire, Mi Amor.”

His lips met mine in a tender kiss – one that wasn’t in the script. The director’s voice cut through the moment, “Cut!”

I glared at Lucas, but he just smiled softly.

The director beamed with pride. “Wow, that was really romantic! Thanks to your hard work and cooperation, Tease Me Softly movie was a success!” He shook our hands, and I smiled, impressed by the plot.

I wondered if something like that could happen in real life. What does it feel like to love like Theo and Aki did? I shrugged it off, thinking it was a crazy notion.

“Well done, Maycee. Now that filming is over, we can finally rest and hang out more often. What do you think?” Lucas asked, his voice cheerful.

Biruin mo nagkamabutihan kaming dalawa because of that movie.

I playfully nudged him, surprised by his closeness. “Maybe, Lucas. I didn’t know you had this side of you.”

Lucas nodded, grinning. “I guess we really connected when we talked. I didn’t expect us to become close like this.”

I just smiled in response.

“Let’s celebrate the success of our movie! Bawal ang humindi, everyone’s coming!” This one’s on me! Derek exclaimed, his enthusiasm infectious.

The room erupted in cheers, with some people even jumping up and down. I glanced at my watch. It was still early, so I agreed to join in. Besides, it was Derek’s treat, and I didn’t want to be rude.

We headed to a sleek, high-end Japanese restaurant, the sign reading in kanji characters I couldn’t understand. Upon entering, we took our seats, and I found myself sandwiched between Lucas and other co-stars from the taping.

While waiting for our food, the others chatted animatedly, but my mind wandered to the constant questions about my relationship status. True, I was married, but I didn’t want to break the second rule: “Don’t talk about our marriage.” The cold-hearted dragon who enforced that rule sent shivers down my spine.

“Ahh, this? Well… style-style lang to. Feel ko kasi ang cool ko kapag nagsusuot ng singsing.” I said, awkwardly laughing off the tension. Their probing questions made me feel like they were family, expecting me to share every detail of my life.

Thankfully, the others laughed it off and dropped the subject, relieved that the spotlight shifted away from my ring.

“How about we just drink instead?” Lucas suggested, holding up a bottle of liquor. The atmosphere lightened as everyone agreed and poured themselves a drink. The liquor flowed, and the conversation turned more relaxed.

As I sipped my drink, I felt a sense of gratitude toward Lucas for saving me from further questioning. We clinked glasses, and the night wore on, filled with laughter and camaraderie.

Lucas leaned in and whispered, “Hey, everything okay? You seem a bit distant.”

I forced a smile, trying to brush it off. “Yeah, I’m fine. Pagod lang, ata.”

The food arrived, and the conversation flowed more easily, but my thoughts lingered on the secrets I kept hidden.

“Okay… okay. Shall we toast? ” I said raising my glass.

They did the same and we all said “cheers”, after that we all laughed.

I tried to pull myself together, but I knew I was getting pretty wasted. Lucas probably noticed I was way past my limit.

“Maycee, stop drinking. Lasing ka na. Ihatid na lang kita sa bahay niyo.” he worriedly said.

Tumingin naman ako sa kaniya.

“No!!! Bakit naman ako u~uwi ah.” lasing na bulyaw ko sa kaniya. “I didn’t know na may kambal ka pala Lucas.” pinisil ko ang pisngi nito at ilong.

Talaga namang di ko na makontrol sarili ko. Inulit naman niya na ihahatid niya ako. Naiinis naman ako ayaw na ba niya akong kainuman? Aba! talaga namang gusto niya ng suntukan.

I gestured for him to stop talking. He looked defeated, but the conversation and drinking continued. I fumbled through my coat and pulled out my phone from the pocket.

I got irritated when he didn’t reply. “Come get me, wanna see me kiss this guy beside me– Where are you, Maycee?” his voice threw me off. It wasn’t as deep and sharp as Saho’s usual tone.

I shrugged, figuring maybe he was just getting older.

“I’m at the Japanese resto, can you hurry?–” He didn’t even let me finish before hanging up.

Saho’s being pretty harsh today. Maybe he’s just having a bad day. I laughed to myself and caught the others staring. I raised an eyebrow, like “What’s up?”  They looked away, back to the party.

I was dizzy, kaya’t napatingin ako kay Lucas habang umiinom siya.

“Back off. Let’s go home, Maycee.”

“For pete’s sake, Maycee, look at yourself!” The voice sounded familiar. Who was this guy, anyway?

This is not Saho, I know.

I don’t know what went down after that. All I remember is that he dragged me to his car and lectured me like my dad would.

Then I threw up all over his shirt and blacked out.

My eyes snapped open, and I realized I’d tumbled out of bed. The impact wasn’t too hard, but my butt had landed first, and it hurt like hell. I groaned, clutching my head as a wave of pain washed over me. I knew I’d had way too much to drink the night before - vodka, to be specific.

I hated hangovers, but I couldn’t blame anyone but myself. Maybe it was the stress of the past few months, with all the tapings and lack of sleep, that had driven me to drink more than usual. I slowly got to my feet, rubbing my sore head, and wondered how I’d learn to pace myself.

I opened the cabinet, but the clothes inside weren’t mine. I scanned the room, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. This wasn’t my room. I tried to recall the events of the previous night, but my memories were hazy. What the heck happened last night?

I tried to piece together some memories, but it was like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces. Try to think Maycee. Think. Think .

I looked down at my clothes and realized I wasn’t wearing what I had on last night. I don’t own any Goku pajamas, and this definitely wasn’t my style.

Panic started to set in - what happened last night? I was with Derek, Lucas, and the other actors… Wait a minute, maybe I crashed at Lucas’s house. But where’s Saho? Did he forget to pick me up last night?

I hope I didn’t do anything embarrassing… I’m not sure I can face them if   I did.

Just as I convinced myself that Lucas brought me here, the door swung open and Grae walked in with a glass of water. He saw the shock on my face, like I’d seen a ghost. “Grae?” I thought to myself. “What is he doing here?”

I couldn’t help but think the worst… Could he be the one behind all this?

“ You’re okay? Drink this, it’ll help ease your hangover.” he said, handing me a glass of water.

I took it, still feeling a bit dazed. “S-salamat.” I muttered, gulping it down.

I plopped myself on the bed, taking a deep breath to calm down. Grae’s eyes met mine, like he was waiting for me to spill the beans.

“So, you brought me here?” I asked, and he nodded.

“Ikaw…you changed my clothes?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

He nodded again, and I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me. It’s not like it’s a big deal or anything, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling.

“Room mo ito ’di ba? Why didn’t you take me to my own room?” I asked, confusion etched on my face.

He took the glass from me and set it on the table, his movements calm and deliberate.

“Well, why don’t you remember what you did…” He smiled, making me feel uneasy. “ Care to explain yourself, considering you were drunk? ” His tone shifted to icy seriousness.

I gulped repeatedly, unable to respond. What did I do? What did I do???

He crossed his arms, his piercing gaze demanding answers. I felt like I’d committed a sin that required immediate confession, or else I’d face dire consequences. The tension between us was suffocating, making my mind foggy and my heart racing.

I played with my fingers, beads of sweat forming on my palms.

Don’t look at his eyes, don’t look at his eyes… But why was I afraid? I was being paranoid. We had an agreement to mind our own business. I took a deep breath, bit my lip, and slowly lifted my chin to meet his gaze. My heart racing, I fought to steady my nerves. When our eyes finally met, I felt a jolt, but I held my ground.

I smirked, trying to deflect the tension. “Rule number three?” I asked, but he just raised an eyebrow.

“Just answer me, Maycee.” he said coldly, his voice laced with impatience. “ Right now. ”

My annoyance got the better of me, and I blurted out the reason I’d gotten drunk. Then, I asked him what happened after I’d accidentally called him instead of Saho. And then, like a bolt of lightning, I remembered vomiting on his shirt. My face burned with embarrassment as he calmly recounted the events, including how I’d ended up sleeping in his room.

“ As soon as you vomited on my shirt while I was carrying you, you acted like a child and rushed to my room to sleep. I told you to sleep in your own room, but you insisted, so I had no choice but to let you. You even soiled yourself, so I had to change your clothes. Honestly, I didn’t plan on changing you, but I didn’t want my bed to stink, and you’d get sick if I didn’t clean you up .” his words made my face burn with embarrassment.

“You even hugged me after I changed your clothes and…– Oh my god, stop! Nakakahiya na

sobra !” I covered his mouth, desperate for him to stop recounting the humiliating events of the previous night.

My face was beet red with embarrassment. Who wouldn’t be mortified after throwing up on him twice, sleeping in his bed, and hugging him? I felt like I had lost all sense of dignity. Thankfully, he hadn’t left me to suffer alone.

But then, he laughed, and I was taken aback. It’s pretty…I-I guess?

“It’s okay, Maycee.” he said gently. “Just be a more responsible drinker next time , okay? You don’t want to worry your father, do you?” his words were laced with concern, but delivered in a light tone that made my heart flutter slightly.

I nodded, he’s right.

“Y-yeah, th-thanks, Grae.” I mumbled, still feeling a bit shy.

“Let’s eat. Your father called, he wants us to attend a party tonight.” he said, already heading towards the direction of food.

I followed closely behind. “What party?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

“Birthday party.” he replied briefly.

“Oh.” I responded, my interest piqued.

After lunch, Grae insisted we buy new clothes for the party. I hesitated, having plenty of party outfits at home, but he wouldn’t budge. Since he’s paying, I figured I’d let him have his way. As he picked out suits that would suit me, I caught the admiring glances from the female staff and customers.

I chuckled inwardly, thinking, “Who wouldn’t notice a guy like me, especially a popular and handsome actor?”

Grae’s eyes sparkled with amusement as he watched me try on different outfits.

Grae excused himself to step out, and suddenly, a group of five women approached me, followed by others. They seemed eager for my autographs.

“Sir, pwede bang makuha yung number ng kaibigan niyo?” one of them asked, her eyes sparkling.

I felt a surge of surprise, realizing they weren’t interested in me after all. I awkwardly smiled and shrugged.

“Ah, hindi ko alam miss eh.” I said, gesturing helplessly.“

“Please, sir.” she begged, her voice sweet but her eyes determined.

Others chimed in, “Oo nga po, Sir.” The woman’s smile turned sly, and she said,

“Baka ayaw mo lang sabihin.”

Suddenly, they transformed into fierce negotiators, determined to get Grae’s number. It was as if they’d devour me whole if I didn’t comply. Thankfully, Grae returned just in time, his presence a welcome relief.

“Hindi ko nga alam, eh— Maycee, are you done? ” Grae’s voice cut through the tension, and the women suddenly fell silent, returning to their tasks as if nothing had happened.

“Ah, yes, I’m done.” I replied, trying to compose myself.

I could feel the women’s disapproving gazes on me, their earlier enthusiasm now replaced with cold stares. Phew, it’s like I’ve been totally escaped from the jungle.

As I stepped onto the stairs, my balance faltered, and I felt myself tumbling forward. But before I could fall, a pair of arms caught me, steadying me against a firm chest. I looked up to see Grae’s face inches from mine, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that left me breathless. For a few moments, we just stared at each other, the world around us melting away. I was the first to break the gaze, my heart racing. A strange, fluttery feeling tickled my chest, and I tried to brush it off, but it lingered.

“Thanks.” I murmured, quickly regaining my composure and continuing down the stairs.

As we entered the party, the music and laughter enveloped us. Dad showed up and greeted us. We mingled with the guests, exchanging pleasantries and smiles. But every time Grae’s eyes met mine, I felt that fluttery sensation again. Shrugged off.

I bit hate that they always ask me about business.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for our birthday girl, the stunning and independent… Yasmine Sabri.”

The room erupted in applause as I stood there, frozen. I couldn’t quite explain why I felt so nervous, considering how long it’s been since we last met. Yasmine and I had cut ties years ago. Still, as I stood in the middle of the party, memories of our past came rushing back, filling my chest with a weight I didn’t know I still carried. But no, I couldn’t afford to dwell on that. I was here as a guest, nothing more .

Yes, you heard it right. Yasmine and I had shared so much—laughter, tears, intimate moments I once thought would never fade. But that was all in the past now. I had moved on.

As I scanned the room, my eyes unintentionally locked with hers. For a brief second, I saw a flicker of something in her expression. Maybe it was regret. Or perhaps surprise. But just as quickly, that fleeting moment was gone, replaced by her ever-present birthday smile, glowing and warm.

I felt my stomach twist. Why did it still hurt?

Yasmine took the mic, her voice warm and inviting. “Thank you, thank you, everyone,” she said, her words light and playful. “You know, I had no idea my parents were planning all of this. Dad, you sly dog!” She turned toward her father, a teasing scowl on her lips.

Laughter filled the room, and we all joined in, singing “Happy Birthday” to her. Then, with a bright smile, she raised her glass. “Here’s to me turning 27!” she said, her voice filled with cheeky confidence. We all clinked our glasses in unison.

I remained in the corner, quietly watching the celebration unfold. I couldn’t help but wonder if she had noticed me among the crowd. I took a sip of my drink, exchanged a few words with acquaintances, and did my best to blend in.

“Belated congrats, Maycee.” someone said as they approached me.

I smiled and nodded. “Thank you. Appreciate it.”

As I turned to grab another drink from the bar, my shoulder collided with someone else’s, and my heart nearly stopped.

I didn’t even have to look up to know who it was.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, instinctively steadying her by the elbow.

Yasmine chuckled softly, a familiar glint of mischief in her eyes. “It’s fine. Just a little clumsy on my part.”

We stood there for a moment, the air between us charged, heavy with unspoken words. Then she broke the silence, her voice dropping to a more serious tone.

“Maycee… can we talk for a second?”

I raised an eyebrow, trying to mask the curiosity that bubbled up inside me. “Sure, what is it?”

Yasmine glanced around the room to ensure we weren’t being overheard. Her eyes softened. “I just wanted to say… I’m glad you’re here.”

I blinked, a little taken aback. “Really?”

She nodded, a gentle smile pulling at the corners of her lips. “Yeah. I mean it.”

I didn’t know what to say to that, so I just offered a small smile in return. But as we stood there, I felt the weight of her words, and I couldn’t shake the sensation that something was about to shift between us.

Yasmine’s gaze drifted to my hand, and I noticed her eyes linger there, narrowing slightly. “Wait… you’re married?”

I stiffened, my heart skipping a beat. Another misinterpretation. If only I can tell her that it’s merely a contract.

Before I could say anything, she waved her hand dismissively. “No need to hide it, Maycee,” she said with a knowing smirk. “You don’t have to pretend like I don’t already know.”

A wave of discomfort washed over me. I opened my mouth to explain, but Yasmine cut me off.

“No, it’s fine. I didn’t mean to pry. I just—well, it’s unexpected, that’s all.” She took a deep breath.

“Anyway, congrats on your award. It’s well-deserved.” Her tone softened. “Really. You’ve always had so much potential.”

I was about to respond when a voice interrupted us.

“Yasmine, can I steal you for a moment?” Grae’s voice cut through the air like a dagger, and I immediately felt the tension spike.

I turned toward him, forcing a polite smile. Grae, my husband—though that term felt more like a label than anything real—stood at the edge of the crowd, his gaze firmly fixed on me.

Did they know each other? Siya ba iyong pinalit sa kin? Something’s not feels right.

I nodded absently, and as she walked away with Grae, my chest tightened. What the hell was going on? I was beginning to feel like a stranger in my own life.

I leaned against the bar, the faint buzz of conversation swirling around me, but all I could focus on was the silence between Grae and me. I hadn’t seen him since we arrived at the party, and honestly, I was thankful for it. The less I had to face the man I’d been married to for over a 9 months, the better.

Yet here he was, interrupting a perfectly awkward conversation with my ex, of all people .

Grae approached, his posture as stiff as always. He was the image of control—tailored suit, sharp jaw, that intense look in his eyes. The type of guy who always appeared like he had his life together, but I knew better. We were both wearing masks.

“ You don’t have to pretend you don’t see me .” Grae said, his voice low, but the edge to it made me straighten up.

I swallowed, trying to keep my emotions in check. “I wasn’t pretending anything.”

“Oh, really? Because it looked to me like you were avoiding me.”

I exhaled sharply, shaking my head. “We’re at a party, Grae. You’ve been off mingling with everyone else. If you wanted to talk, you could have come over.”

His lips tightened in frustration. “You know it’s complicated with us. I don’t exactly feel comfortable in this… situation either.”

I turned to face him fully now, the tension between us thickening. “I’m not the one who agreed to this contract, Grae. You’re the one who was all for it. So if you’re uncomfortable, maybe you should’ve thought about that before we signed.”

His eyes flashed. “Don’t bring that up. You knew what you were getting into.”

I bit my lip, the memory of that day rushing back—our forced marriage, the contract that tied us together. Nothing but a business deal. We were both playing roles.

“Fine.” I said, my voice softer now. “Let’s just get through this night, alright?”

Grae nodded, but there was something in his eyes—something I couldn’t quite place. His gaze softened for a second, like he was actually seeing me.

“ You look good tonight… ” he said quietly.

I blinked, caught off guard by the sincerity in his voice. “Thanks?” I muttered.

The awkward silence returned, and for a fleeting moment, I wondered if we could ever truly get past all the walls we’d built between us.

A few minutes later, we decided to stay at the bar near the party to enjoy the night a little more. At this point, I had downed more than 20 shots, and I could feel the alcohol getting the best of me. I could already tell I was about to spill everything I had been holding back, all my frustrations and thoughts—thanks to the booze.

“Sorry, for what I said earlier. Nadala lang kasi… I’m just really pissed that you and Yasmine know each other,” I muttered, resting my head on my right hand. “Or maybe it’s more than just that… Huh.” I shot him a glare.

He just smirked. “Yasmine? That birthday girl earlier?” He asked, as if he didn’t know the answer.

“Well, who else would it be?” I shot back, rolling my eyes, but then he actually laughed at me.

“Hmm, let me guess. You two were lovers in the past, right?”

I froze for a moment. What the hell?

“Hah, how do you know?” I raised an eyebrow, my tone a mix of confusion and annoyance. “And can you stop with that teasing tone of yours? I swear, I’m not amused, Mr. Workaholic.”

He smirked again, raising an eyebrow as if to challenge me. “Let me ask one thing at a time. Don’t be jealous, darling . We were just talking business—something my father ordered. Honestly, I don’t even know her that well, if you’re wondering.”

He reached up to brush a strand of hair from my face, but I immediately swatted his hand away.

Did he think I was that easy to fool? Ugh , the nerve of him!

“I like teasing you, Maycee,” he said, his voice almost a whisper now. “And, to be honest, I kinda hate the ‘ Mr. Workaholic’ you keep calling me.”

I rolled my eyes. I didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t anymore. Maybe I was just too drunk to make sense of anything.

Everything was spinning, and my thoughts were a mess. “ Arghh , stop talking so much.” I groaned.

“A shot again, please. Whiskey this time.” I told the bartender, but before he could even acknowledge me, Grae interrupted.

“Maycee. You’ve had enough.” he said, his voice calm yet firm.

I couldn’t help but feel a bit annoyed. He was way too composed, almost like he hadn’t drunk a single drop. I think I might’ve been a little jealous of that.

“Shut up, Lysander,” I muttered, finally using his first name. “One more shot, please—”

Before I could finish, he grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the bar.

“ Hey! Let go of me, Grae!” I shouted, trying to free myself. “I want another drink !”

But no, he didn’t let go. Instead, he practically dragged me out of the bar and toward his car.

His grip on me was firm, yet gentle, as he guided me into the passenger seat. His face was just inches away from mine, and I could see the beads of sweat on his forehead, just like mine .

He didn’t say anything as he clicked my seatbelt into place. I was too dizzy to argue, too drunk to care. For once, I let him do whatever he wanted, letting my mind drift, my thoughts fading in and out.

As we drove home, the world outside was just a blur. Grae didn’t say a word, but his presence was somehow comforting. The city lights flashed by in streaks, a reminder that everything was moving, even if I wasn’t.

When we got home, he helped me walk to the room, holding me up. My vision felt like it was swaying as we moved, but I could still feel the warmth of his body— probably because he’d had a few drinks, too.

I couldn’t help but keep looking at him. And honestly, I’d admit that there were moments when I found myself captivated by his good looks. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I could feel myself getting lost in it.

Before I could even gather my thoughts, I noticed he was looking back at me. His gaze felt like it was piercing through me, and I couldn’t shake the strange sensation growing between us.

“Why are you looking at me like that, huh ?” I asked, hint of irritation.

He raised an eyebrow. “ You’re the one staring at me first. That should be my line, Maycee .”

I wanted to argue back, but all I could think about was the way my eyes drifted to his lips. “I don’t care.” I accidentally mumbled, my gaze falling on them. “Damn, I want to kiss you so badly… What’s it taste like? ”

He looked at me with a knowing smirk, his voice almost teasing now. “Really? Why don’t you give it a try then?”

He reached up, gently tilting my chin to make sure I was looking at him. The distance between us seemed to close in, and in that moment, everything felt electric.

We just stared at each other. The air felt heavy like the world had narrowed down to just the two of us.

In a glimpse, I caught myself pulling him by the necktie, lips crashing into his. I felt his shock—maybe because I actually did what I said I would. But a few seconds later, he responded. His kiss was rough, yet sweet . Demanding, yet soft .

As we pulled away, both of us were breathless. My chest heaved, and I could feel the heat crawling up my skin.

Even though it wasn’t my first kiss, it felt strange. Weirdly electrifying. And somehow… kulang . Parang gusto ko pa.

“ Maycee… what did you do?“ he asked in a low, husky tone.

I blinked, still trying to process everything. Was he angry? Confused? Turned on?

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My stomach churned violently. I refused to look at him. Nahihilo na ako. My head spun and I knew , any second now…

“Look at me… or should we kiss again—”

Before he could finish, I turned to him sharply and threw up. On him.

“ Oh damn. Maycee. ” He caught me just in time before I collapsed, arms firm around me.

“ I’m sorry… “ I mumbled, eyes fluttering shut.

I felt safe. And disgusted. But mostly …

safe

. Then, darkness eat me.

LYSANDER GRAESON RYLAN’S POV

The moment his body went limp in my arms, I froze.

“Maycee?”

No response.

I looked down. His flushed cheeks, parted lips, the soft rise and fall of his chest. He was completely out.

Damn it . I shouldn’t let him drink when I know that this will gonna happen.

I carefully adjusted my grip, hoisting him up bridal style. His head rested on my shoulder, and I tried to ignore how natural it felt—how his warmth seeped into me, despite the fact that he just vomited on my shirt not five minutes ago.

I laid him on the bed gently.

He murmured something in his sleep, nothing coherent. But it made my chest clench for some reason. Was he dreaming? Was he okay?

I sighed, tugging off his shoes and carefully wiping the side of his mouth with the towel I grabbed from the bathroom. I should’ve been annoyed again, disgusted, even.

But I wasn’t.

Not really .

Instead, I found myself standing at the foot of the bed, arms crossed, watching him like a complete idiot.

That kiss.

That damn kiss .

It replayed in my head like a loop I couldn’t break. The way he pulled me by the tie. The shock in his eyes. The fire behind it. The taste of tequila and stubbornness and something else I couldn’t name.

And then… it was gone. Just like that. He passed out and left me here—heart pounding, shirt ruined, and somehow…

Wanting more.

I raked a hand through my hair and let out a bitter laugh. “ You’re trouble, Maycee .“

I shouldn’t care. This wasn’t part of the plan.

This whole marriage—this deal—was supposed to be clean, detached. Professional.

But now I’m watching the way his fingers curl against the sheets like a child lost in a bad dream. I changed him out of his top carefully, with more hesitation than I’d like to admit and gave him one of my loose shirts. I didn’t look too long. Just… enough to make sure he was okay. I’m running a towel over his forehead to cool him down, checking if he’s feverish.

Then I sat on the couch.

And stayed there.

For an hour. Watching the slow rhythm of his breathing while the coffee grew cold in my hand, and the weight of that kiss refused to leave my lips. Blaming the coffee. The alcohol. The stress.

Am I losing my mind? Fuck . What happen to you Graeson?!

The morning light slashed through the room curtains, landing directly on the bed where he lay curled up, breathing softly. I think I didn’t have enough sleep because of that tension we had last night. I mean.. uh nevermind .

I took a slow sip of the bitter coffee I made an hour ago, shirtless and cold from the AC, but too wired to care. His clothes were still damp in the bathroom, so I gave him one of my shirts. Oversized on him, of course.

He stirred. Groaned.

I watched, quiet. Observing what would his reaction when he finds out that he do something embarrassing again? Hmm, that would be fun?

He sat up with a wince, like the weight of the night was crawling back into his bones. His hair was messy, and his eyes were puffy—but somehow, still unfairly pretty. He looked around, confused, and then—

He saw me.

And nearly screamed.

I raised my brow. “You’re awake.”

He just stared, mouth opening slightly. No words. Only a dry croak came out.

“You puked on me.” I said, deadpan.

He covered his face with both hands, groaning louder. “ Kill me now.”

I couldn’t help it. I chuckled. “ Tempting .”

He peeked through his fingers. “Did I… do anything else stupid?”

I stared at him, letting the silence stretch a little longer than necessary. “Aside from kissing me without warning? Grabbing my tie? Throwing up on me?”

His whole face turned red. “Shit.”

“But,” I added, standing up and walking toward him, “you also passed out before you could finish embarrassing yourself.”

He looked up at me, embarrassed, maybe nervous. I was standing too close now, but I didn’t move away.

“You were worried? I mean your shirt, nasukahan ko eh. Lalabhan ko nalang…” he said quietly.

I didn’t answer. I just looked at him.

Because I was. More than I should’ve been.

He was a mess. Emotional, chaotic, stubborn .

But last night… when he kissed me it wasn’t just drunken heat. There was something real in it. Something that stayed on my lips long after he passed out.

“Thanks.” he murmured, pulling the shirt down his legs. “For taking care of me… kahit na lasing akong ewan.”

“Don’t thank me yet,” I said, leaning down, lowering my voice near his ear. “You’re still gonna pay for puking on my shirt.”

He slowly lifted his head, eye locked on me. Shivering like a lost puppy.

I smirked. Cute.

Should I tease him more? Or something else…?

My phone rang that clearly interrupt our intimate chatting. I sigh. Bad timing, really.

“Maycee. Eat meal first after that, drink this. It will help you to ease that hangover.” I handed him a tea, casually talking.

He gently nodded dumbfounded. Maybe he’s trying to calculate the situation, the atmosphere between us .
