Special Chapter - Garrett & Hannah
“Are you sure, it’s okay?” Lisa asked.
I smiled at her and said, “Yes, it’s fine.”
She reached for both my hands and held them tightly. “Thank you so much, Hannah. I owe you a lot.”
“It’s fine,” I reiterated. “Besides, who am I to say no to more money, right?”
Hannah tried to smile at my remark, but the tears around her eyes told me that she really appreciated me taking over her shift at the diner. I mean…what choice did I have, really? I wasn’t heartless. She had a family emergency. Of course she should be there. I completely understand the importance of family.
“Thank you so much, Hannah!”
I just nodded at her and watched as she disappeared from my vision. Once she was gone, I reached for my phone. I immediately felt sad when I saw a message from Garrett. He sent a message from a few hours ago telling me to make sure I didn’t forget our date today. I didn’t. In fact, I was waiting for this day. It’s our anniversary. We planned a lot of activities to do together since…yeah, admittedly, when we’re together… plans get derailed .
But this time, we’re determined to actually spend time outside—we planned to stay outside since staying indoors tends to distract us… rightfully so.
“Hey, Wellsy,” he said as soon as he answered my call.
“Hey…” I replied.
“Is there something wrong?” he quickly asked. He was so attuned to the tone of my voice. It’s both a blessing and a curse because I can never hide what I am feeling from this person.
“Garrett.”
“Did I do anything wrong?” he immediately asked. I heard the panic in his voice.
“What? No. Why would you think that?”
“Because your voice,” he said like he immediately knew how I was feeling just based on the tone of my voice.
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” I replied. “ I did something wrong.“
“Did you kill someone? I’ll get the shovel ready, Wellsy.”
I chuckled at his response. God, I love this man.
“Fortunately, I didn’t,” I said. “But…” I drew a deep breath. “Remember Lisa?” I asked.
“Your workmate?”
“Yes,” I replied. “She has a family emergency, so I have to cover her shift.”
“Oh.”
And then a stretch of silence followed soon after. I chewed on my lower lip. I felt so guilty. I knew I shouldn’t have said yes to Lisa without consulting Garrett first but… she looked like she’s on the verge of breaking down. How could I say no in this situation?
“It’s okay,” he said. “We can raincheck.”
“There’s no one else available,” I explained.
“I know,” he replied.
“You know?”
“Yes, I know, Wellsy,” he said. “Because I know you’re looking forward to our anniversary, as well. So, if you said yes to covering her shift despite that, it means that you had no other choice.”
My lips parted.
What… the?
“So, don’t worry about it, okay? After this call, I’ll re-sched our activities.”
“But you already paid for them…”
“I think we can re-sched them,” he said. “But don’t worry about it, okay? When’s your shift starting?”
I looked at the clock. “In a few minutes.”
“Got it.”
“I’m sorry again.”
He chuckled. “I told you, it’s fine.”
“Still.”
“It’s fine, Wellsy.”
“I was looking forward to it.”
“You can still look forward,” he replied.
“I know…” I sighed. “Thank you for being understanding.”
“I know, right? Aren’t I the best boyfriend?”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, modesty really isn’t your thing, huh?”
“Wellsy, Wellsy,” he said with laughter in his voice. “When have I ever been modest?”
“Ugh. You suck, Garrett. Goodbye.”
“Love you,” he said.
“Love you,” I replied and the words rolled out of my tongue effortlessly. Because I do. I do love him. I do love him a lot.
“Still good?” Julio, our night cook, asked.
I showed him a thumb up since my other hand was busy carrying a tray full of orders. I hurriedly walked towards the table and gave them their order. I was in the middle of answering their question when a rowdy group of students yelled for my attention.
I gave the current table I was serving a small smile before I turned my back and walked towards the group of rowdy students. I bit the inside of my cheeks and took their order.
Normally, I’d be pissed and let my smart mouth do the talking but tonight’s not the night for that. For some reason, it seemed like the entire population of Briar University thought that it was a good idea to go eat at this diner. They’re everywhere! I didn’t think I was able to take a moment’s worth of breath since my shift started. It’s been insane!
“Got these,” I said when they’re done shouting their orders at me.
My smile— my waitress smile —was still plastered on my face as I turned my back on them. But that smile was quickly replaced with my lips parting in a mixture of surprise and confusion when I saw Garrett in front of me.
“What—” My hand immediately went inside my pocket. I grabbed it and saw that I got a few notifications from him. “Oh, god, I’m so sorry. I was so swamped!”
“It’s all good,” he said. I was about to respond to him, but someone called my attention. Garrett gave me a small nod, as if telling me that I should go do my job first. I mouthed ‘sorry’ to him.
I proceeded to do my job. After what felt like forever that was probably only a few minutes, my eyes wandered around the diner. I was looking for any sign of my boyfriend. My forehead creased when I saw him standing before a table—a table full of sorority girls… who were full on batting their eyelashes at him. Yeah. As a group. They’re all batting their eyelashes at him. Did they freaking practice doing that? They’re in sync.
“What’s he doing?” I asked Nia, a co-worker.
“He asked if he could help.”
“And you said he could?”
Nia shrugged. “Well, we do need help, right?”
“But he doesn’t work here.”
Nia laughed. “It’s not like it’s ever that complicated, Hannah. Our work isn’t rocket-science.”
My eyes were watching Garrett’s every movement while Nia was talking. I watched as Garrett took their orders. Once Garrett was done with the table, he walked towards the kitchen and handed the order.
“Did you work as a waiter before?” I asked, confused, since he seemed to know exactly what to do.
“Why? Because I’m so perfect since I know exactly what to do?” he asked back. I immediately frowned and that earned me a chuckle from him. “You already know I’m perfect, Wellsy. Why act so surprised?”
My lips were still parted. I was confused with what was happening. But before my mind could formulate a response, Garrett was gone again. He walked towards the table like he’s been working here all this time.
What… was happening?
“You okay?” Nia asked when I took my mid-shift break.
Normally, I’d just sit somewhere to rest my legs, but this time, I needed to get away. Garrett was serving another table full of sorority girls. I didn’t even know why they’re here. I never saw them before. But for some reason, of all days, they decided to eat here now?
Ugh.
I was so pissed!
And I hated that I was even pissed.
I couldn’t even show that I was pissed because I was at work. I couldn’t lose this job. I needed all the money I could get so that I could go home for Thanksgiving.
Tsk.
Great.
Now I needed to suck it up and just silently sulk here in the storage room.
“Wellsy?”
My head automatically snapped at the direction of the door when I heard Garrett’s faint voice calling for me. I straightened my back and took a deep breath. I pursed my lips together, as well. I didn’t want to show him that I was pissed—
“Hey, you okay?”
Right…why did I even bother? This guy could read me like a philosophy book… and god, it’s so hard to stay pissed when I remembered how Garrett took time to learn how to read me like those philosophy books I used to tutor him for.
“Yes, of course,” I said with a small smile on my face because any bigger would definitely set an alarm. “Why are you here?”
“Because we originally planned to spend this day together,” he replied. Garrett sat beside me. I immediately relaxed when I felt his skin against mine. I rested my head against his shoulder, and I felt his arm wrap around my shoulders.
“Sorry,” I whispered.
“Why? We’re still spending today together.”
“By working?”
“Why not? It makes me a well-rounded person—imagine, with all the money I already have, I still work? I’m so humble.”
I turned my head and gave him the best ’ I am so judging you’ face I could muster. In turn, Garrett gave me a laugh.
“But really…” I said. “You don’t have to help me,” I continued. He probably saw me struggling earlier, so he decided to help out. I didn’t even know—well, duh… Garrett’s so good-looking. Of course, he managed to convince my boss to just let him waltz in and work a shift.
“It’s fine, Wellsy,” he replied.
“I’ll just see you after my shift. I’m almost done, anyway,” I lied. I still had a few hours left.
“Don’t you want me here?” he asked while rubbing his thumb against the skin of my shoulder. It definitely didn’t help.
I didn’t answer… because I didn’t know the answer. Did I want him here? Duh. Of course, I did. I wanted him around me all the time… but also, I didn’t want to watch all those sorority girls flirt with him while doing the synchronized eyelash batting they got going on.
“Wellsy?” he called again. He held my chin and made me look at him. “You don’t want me here?”
“You’re so unfair,” I said and he gave me that lopsided grin. He knew I was weak for this tone of his voice and he’s purposely using that against me.
“Well?” he asked again using that raspy voice. “You don’t want me here?”
I chewed on my lower lip. “You’re just flirting…” I said with my small voice. “With those sorority girls.”
His forehead immediately creased. “What?” he asked. He didn’t sound alarmed—in fact, he sounded amused.
I tried to slap his hand away but of course, how can I overpower my hockey-player boyfriend? Garrett cupped my face with both hands and made me look him in the eye. Unfair! He knew I was weak for those gray eyes!
“Wellsy,” he cooed.
Unfair!
Across the board unfair when he uses that voice!
“I wasn’t flirting,” he said. “I reserve a hundred percent of all my flirting for you.”
I rolled my eyes—that’s all I could do since he was still cupping my face. “Liar.”
“No. Truth only.”
“You were smiling.”
“Well, I was working.”
“You didn’t have to.”
“I kinda do.”
“What? You’re broke now?” I jested.
“Oh, never,” he said so confidently. “Just working for the tips, you know?”
My forehead creased. “What?” I asked, confused.
Before answering, Garrett leaned in and planted a soft kiss on my lips that I almost forgot where we were and what we were talking about… Whenever our lips would meet, it’s like the whole world around me disappears and he’s all I could see and think about.
Yeah.
I was such a goner for this guy.
“I want to buy you tickets, so you can go home for Thanksgiving—”
“You don’t have to,” I said, immediately cutting him off.
“But I want to,” he replied. “However… as we both know, you don’t want me to spend money on you.”
“It’s your family’s money.”
“Tomatoe, tomato,” he said. I rolled my eyes. “So, I thought that since you’re stuck here… and since I originally planned to spend my entire day with you anyway, then maybe I should just help you out.”
“It’s so busy today.”
“I know,” he agreed.
“Sorry you had to use your precious hands to help me.”
“Right? Because these precious hands would rather touch you,” he said as his right hand went from cupping my face to touching my neck. It sent shivers straight down my spine.
“We’re at my work,” I said… I barely heard my voice. Damn. Why were we still at work?!
This bastard showed me his grin. Oh, he’s so enjoying this!
“Ugh, stop distracting me!” I said and tried to re-align my thoughts. God, I get so easily distracted when his hands touch me!
He laughed again, clearly enjoying the fact that he can easily get a reaction out of me.
“So, as I was saying, after my first table, I saw that the tip wasn’t so bad,” he said. I asked him how much he was given and my eyes widened.
“That’s a lot!”
He shrugged. “Well, can you blame them?”
I groaned. “So insufferable.”
“Thanks, babe,” he said and then planted a kiss again that annoyingly just made me want to jump his bones right here in this supply room. “But yeah… I realized that if I just smile here and there, I can probably get a decent amount by the end of this shift.”
“How much have you gotten so far?” I asked and he answered. My eyes widened. “So unfair! Maybe I should start smiling here and there, too,” I continued and that earned me a glare from him. I chuckled and kissed him. “Love you.”
“I love you, too,” he replied. I smiled at him again. That seemed to calm him down. “Is that enough to buy you tickets for Thanksgiving?”
“More than enough,” I replied. “But… that’s your money.”
“I’m only here because of you.”
“Still.”
“Money’s all yours, Wellsy.” I remained quiet. “Please? It’s not from my family… And if you really think about it, those tips were supposed to be yours. I was just helping out for you. So, if we’re being philosophical, it’s your money.”
“That’s not how philosophy works. Have you learned nothing from all our tutoring sessions?”
“I was more focused on the tutor.”
I glared at him.
He laughed.
“I thought we’d spend Thanksgiving together?” I asked instead because it still felt iffy to take his money.
“We can spend other holidays together,” he told me. “I know you miss your family.”
I chewed on my lower lip. “I do.”
“So, go spend time with them.”
“Really?”
“Really,” he said as he wrapped his arms around my waist. “I plan to spend all my future holidays with you, anyway, so go spend this Thanksgiving with your family. I’m sure they miss you a lot, too.”
I felt the stinging in my eyes.
Damn.
How did we get here? I still remember the days when I cringe at the mention of his name…
“I love you, you know that, right?” I said as I wrapped my arm around his neck.
“I do,” he replied. “And I love you a lot, too.”
I smiled at him and as he leaned in to kiss me, I suddenly jumped away from him when the door to the storage room suddenly swung open.
“Guys, seriously? I am dying outside!” Nia said.
We laughed as we got out of the supply room and returned to working our shift.
