“Are you guys joking, right?”

Maeve is a Gay na kilala bilang isang dress designer.

“What? Di pwede Dad! Bakit naman ako ikakasal sa isang lalaki? At mas malala pa isang irresponsible guy pa talaga?”

That’s our way to make our relationship still connected on each other.”

“Whatever you like it or not. The marriage is still going on. And we planned to announce this to the whole world.”

I hate him.

We’re friends - but not the kind you’d want.

Pero never kaming naging close.

Flashback - Three Years Ago

First time ko siyang nakilala was during a private charity ball.

“Maeve Cromwell,” he said, habang may hawak na baso ng wine. “You’re the trans model everyone’s talking about.”

“Wow,” I replied flatly. “Thanks for starting with my gender. Not awkward at all.”

He chuckled. “Relax. I meant it in a good way. You’re making waves.”

That was our first conversation. Babaero. Mayabang. Mahilig sa attention.

We became… acquaintances. Sometimes we’d drink with the same circle. Sometimes he’d walk me to my car. Sometimes, he’d even call me “M” and pretend we were cool. But behind all of it, I knew what he really was - fake.

Flashback - A Year Ago

“Ano?”

Nabitawan ko ang hawak kong glass noon.
“You’re marrying me off?”

“Hindi lang basta kasal, anak,”
sabi ni Daddy.
“It’s a merger. Your marriage to Chris will secure the partnership between Cromwell Ventures and Bradford Holdings. Isa itong power move. Para sa future.”

“Future ng sino? Sa’min ba, o sa kumpanya niyo?”

Mom tried to calm me down.
“Maeve, this will elevate your influence. You’ll be unstoppable. Bradford’s name will give you coverage at the Western market-”

“No. I’m not a product.”

I tried to fight it.

Back to Present

“Eew, Dad. Can we stop calling him my fiancé? Kahit asawa, nasusuka akong pakinggan.

“I explained it already,”
he replied, his tone tired.
“I know you don’t want this, but-”

“Exactly! ‘But’ is the problem! Bakit pa kasi kailangan ng koneksyon-koneksyon? This is why I hate being an only child.

I wore a soldier paint dress with a slit on the side hips.

Mission accomplished!

Mom looked away. Dad sighed. Chris?

He grinned.

Tangina.

“What are you doing?”
tanong ni Dad, pero si Mommy? Sanay na. She knows how I play this game. When I don’t want something, I destroy it.

“Shall we?”

Good. Mas mainis kayo. Wala namang kasalang mangyayari.

He was already walking to the driver’s side when I cleared my throat - loud enough to snap his attention.

Nagkatinginan kami. Nakataas ang kilay ko.

“What are you doing? Open the door,”
sabi ko, cold at walang emosyon.

He sighed, walked around the car, and opened the passenger door like a gentleman he was clearly pretending to be.

I smiled. Fake, of course. And got in.

Maybe it’s harsh, but I don’t care. He’s faker than a showroom appliance, and I’m just here to make this arrangement crash and burn.

One date at a time.

•••
At the restaurant •••

“Table for two. Bradford reservation,”
Chris told the maître d’ with that same smooth confidence that used to make women giggle in interviews. Ako? I just rolled my eyes so hard baka mahulog ‘yung contact lens ko.

The place screamed pretentiously.

“Nice place,”
I said, faking a smile as we sat down.
“Very… you.”

He smirked.
“You look different today.”

“Different bad or different good?”
I shot back, crossing my legs.

“Different… like you’re trying too hard not to care.”

Napasinghap ako.
“Wow. Psychoanalyzing me already? Do you do this to all your future wives?”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
“No. Only to the ones who wear war paint for dinner.”

“War paint makes me feel alive,”
I said, twirling my fork.
“You should try it sometime. Maybe black lipstick will distract people from your trust issues.”

He chuckled softly - irritatingly charming, as always.
“You haven’t changed, Maeve. Still sharp as ever.”

“Sharp enough to cut through bullshit.”

Silence. A few seconds of uncomfortable eye contact. The kind where both of you are pretending you don’t care but your pulse betrays you.

The waiter arrived, mercifully.
“For you, ma’am?”

“Steak. Rare,”
I said.

“For me, same,”
Chris added.

“Copying my order now? How romantic.”

He ignored that, reaching for the wine menu.
“You still drink?”

“Only when I’m forced to sit through corporate blind dates.”

“I’ll take that as a yes,”
he said, signaling the waiter.

•••
Half an hour later •••

The steak was perfect. The conversation - not so much.

“So,”
he said, cutting into his food.
“You’re still modeling?”

“Sometimes. But mostly I help run the Cromwell Ventures’ PR branch

You know - damage control from Dad’s questionable business alliances. Like this one.”

“You mean me?”

I smiled sweetly.
“You said it, not me.”

He sighed, finally putting down his utensils.
“Look, Maeve… I didn’t want this either.”

I froze, fork halfway to my mouth.
“What?”

“Yeah,”
he continued, shrugging.
“You think I’m thrilled about being tied to someone who probably dreams about stabbing me with her eyeliner pencil?”

”…Only sometimes, good for you. You recognize my gender, i like that.”
I muttered, narrowing my eyes.
“Wait, so you’re saying you’re being forced too?”

He leaned back, eyes serious now.
“My dad’s pushing it. He wants the merger more than I do. It’s business. Always is and yeah i know you’re a transgender.”

For the first time, I didn’t have a comeback. Maybe because - and I hated to admit it - he looked sincere.

“So what now?”
I asked finally.
“We pretend to fall in love for the sake of our parents’ stocks?”

“Or,”
he said slowly, smirking again,
“we play the game our way.”

I frowned.
“Meaning?”

“Meaning we pretend just enough to make them think it’s working - and while they’re busy celebrating, we find a way out. You and me, partners in crime.”

I blinked, caught off guard.
“You’re insane.”

“Probably. But you hate this as much as I do, right?”

I stared at him, the man I swore I’d never trust. His eyes - sharp, calculating, too calm for my liking - met mine with something unexpected. A deal. A spark.

For the first time that night, I laughed.
“Fine. But just so we’re clear - this partnership? Purely transactional.”

“Of course,”
he said with a small grin.
“Until it’s not.”

I rolled my eyes.
“Don’t get cute, Bradford.”

“Oh, but I’m naturally charming.”

“Charming my ass.”

He raised his glass.
“To mutually assured destruction?”

I clinked mine against his.
“To the downfall of this stupid engagement.”

And as the glasses touched, I didn’t realize then - that was the exact moment the game stopped being pretend.

To be continued…
