Chapter 1
Ben’s POV
“Just fly the damn plane!” I yelled at the pilot, an old man who’s been with our family for decades. Too many decades.
“Your Majesty,” He pleaded. “What about your parents?” He asked. Ugh! Not this! Who cares what my father thinks! He is the reason why I’m doing this in the first place!
“As prince of Artois, I order you to drive this plane out of here! That’s an order!” I demanded. I hate using my status to get what I want. But in this case, it’s a matter of freedom.
“Very well, your Majesty.” The pilot said. He started up my dad’s private jet and drove onto the tarmac.
Here goes nothing.
I am Prince Benjamin of the Kingdom of Artois. Artois is a small kingdom, one of the only few monarchies left in the world. We’re located north of France and near Belgium. We separated from France centuries ago after some sort of war.
I’m next in line for the throne when I turn 19 (not sure why 19, at least chose an even number!). That’s in a few weeks. All my life, I’ve been cooped up in a castle where I’m given everything I want. I’m told what to do, what to say, what to eat. I have no chance of freedom. Except now.
I called the pilot to set the plane and kinda forced him to fly away from here.
My phone began ringing. It was my sister, Katherine. She knows about my escape plan. Helped me plan everything.
“Hey sis!” I said into the phone.
“Are you in the air?” She asked, making sure to hush her voice.
“Yep!” I said.
“Did you take the credit card we planned?” She asked. Over the course of a few weeks, I slowly deposited money and put it into another secret account. I was able to transfer thousands. Hopefully enough for a few weeks of freedom before I return home.
“Yes. I have it. Remember your plan. Distract dad for the first few days. Tell him I ran off to Paris or Copenhagen.” I said.
“Mmhmm. You got it! Stay safe, big bro. Call me when you land at… wherever you land.” She said.
“You got it. Bye gremlin.” I said. We hung up when I realized I had no idea where I wanted to go.
“Your Majesty, where do you wish to land?” He asked.
“MmmmmmmmmMinesotta!” I said, thinking of the first state in my head.
“You sure you don’t want to go to California or New York or Las Vegas?” He asked.
“I’m sure! I need a place not too obvious in the middle of nowhere.” I said.
“I’ll choose a random town, if that’s okay.” He began to type some coordinates. I sat in my seat and slept through the ride.
I was awoken by the pilot shaking me awake.
“Your Majesty, we’ve arrived.” He said.
“Mmm where?” I groggily responded.
“Verona. No one will know you’re here.” He said. I got up and got my luggage. I exited the plane. It was dark outside.
“Here you go. Don’t say anything to my father.” I gave him a wad of money.
“I’ll try not to.” He said. “Stay safe, Prince Benjamin. We’ll see you soon.” He hopped into the plane while I ran off into the distance. I watched as the plane flew away.
I looked at my surroundings and saw he landed in an empty field. I had no idea where to go. In the distance, I saw the glow of probably a diner. I walked my way there but realized I needed a disguise.
I opened my suitcase and pulled out some shades, a black coat, and a Yankee cap. Very American.
I walked into the diner and saw a waitress.
“Do you know where Verona is?” I asked her.
“Just a few minutes north. Sun should be coming up soon. I recommend you stay here for a while. Doesn’t look like you gots a car.” The woman said. I decided to stay and eat a bit.
Now all I have to do is wait for freedom to begin.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 2
Ben’s POV
After having a really good American style breakfast, I began my walk into town. It took a while, and I was exhausted, but I reached town.
I must’ve looked weird. A stranger walking around town completely lost holding a huge suitcase. I had no idea where to go or if this place has a hotel. I’ll even settle for a motel or B&B.
I sat down at one of the benches and watched the lives of normal people. Here are people who are out with friends and family, not having to worry about leading a country and being a public figure.
I wish my father could understand that I desire freedom. Just for a day or two. But I never got it. Everytime I tried to sneak out, my father would be there to stop me and give me a big lecture about how kings can’t take breaks when they feel like it.
So a few months before my 19th birthday, I thought why not sneak out and leave the country. In fact, leave the whole continent. That’ll give me enough time for me to have a break and when it’s time to return I’ll be ready for the throne.
There’s so much I want to do here. First is to swim in a public pool. I’ve only swam at the palace’s pool but a public pool sounds fun! Also, hang out with normal people. All my “friends” at home are the sons of aristocrats and earls and dukes. None are my friends and the dogmatism in them really gets on my nerves. And have my first kiss. Despite being a prince, I’m still a virgin in everything.
Oh my gosh it’s a communal fountain!!! I walked up to it and admired it. The large button on the side said push and I did. A small stream of water came out from the faucet. I put my lips close and took a gulp of water.
Yep, it tastes like water.
I returned to my suitcase and decided to walk around and see more. I got up and saw the small town with shops on the side. This kinda reminds me of Mayfield back at home. Do I miss home? A little. I miss my sister and mom. I kinda miss my father but not really.
As I turned the corner, I ran into someone. I fell on my ass and stumbled back. My suitcase fell next to me.
“Sorry, sir!” Whoever crashed into me said.
“It’s fine. I’ve been through worse.” I said. Which is true. Cause I’ve been stabbed several times.
The guy got on his knees (hehe) and helped close my suitcase which opened. I got up and helped the guy up too. He was smaller than me, probably 5’11 while I was 6’4 (king genes).
“I haven’t seen you here before.” He said. His voice was soft, like a harp.
“Oh yeah… umm…” I needed to come up with an excuse. “I’m visiting from California.” I said.
“Makes sense. I’ve heard guys from Cali are hot.” He said. I blushed.
“So uh, um, I uh.” Oh fuck he’s already made me a mumbling mess. “D-do you know where the nearest hotel is?” I asked.
“Hotel? There aren’t any in Verona.” He said. Dammit! Where am I supposed to stay now?
“Shit!” I mumbled.
“Do you have a car to go to the next town over?” He asked.
“No. I uh, I’m stranded.” I can’t tell him I came via private jet.
“You can stay with my mom and I.” He chirped up. I looked at the little man next to me. I gawked at him and lifted an eyebrow.
“You sure?” I asked.
“Mmhmm. My mom won’t care. We have a guest room you can stay in. Roof over your head and food.” He said.
“Sold me at food.” I said. He chuckled. And pulled out my wallet that I stacked with American currency. “How much?” I asked him.
“Oh no please. It’s the least I can do after running into you.” He refused money. Already like this kid. My other “friends” would hop on to get free money.
“So, what’s your name?” I asked him.
“Mason Howard. I’m 18 right now.” He said.
“Pleasure to meet you Mason.” I grabbed his back palm and gave it a small kiss. A kind gesture in my home country. “I’m Pri- Ben.” I almost spilled my secret.
“Ben. Is that short for something?” He asked, blushing from my kiss.
“Nope. Just Ben.” I said.
“Very well. Come on, mom is preparing lunch.” He said.
I followed him, admiring his back. Sounds weird but I have a thing for admiring the smallest things about people. Now I just have to hide in plain sight and hope and pray father doesn’t find me.
Mason walked fast when I passed by a shop window with a TV. I froze when a foreign news channel from the UK had a picture of me.
“Prince Benjamin VIII from the Kingdom of Artois has gone missing. The kingdom has issued with the EU to have search warrants in all European countries to find him before he takes the throne this July.”
Fuck. The entirety of Europe already?
I think I’m safe in America for now. And even then, I doubt they’ll look at a small town in Minnesota.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 3
Mason’s POV
Shit there’s a hot guy following me! This only happens in movies or fan fictions! Not a kid in the middle of nowhere. I mean what do I do? Do I turn to talk to him? What if we run into each other? I wouldn’t mind running into his huge pecs.
I just want to poke them.
“How much farther is it?” He asked. Did I mention his voice makes me quiver. Something about his voice just screams authority. He is from Cali, afterall. They believe they can get whatever they want.
“We’re here.” I said. I looked up at the homey home of homiests homes. I’ve lived here for my entire life.
“Oh this looks cute.” Ben said. Cute?
“In you go, your highness.” I said. I saw him tense up a bit but then let out a weird laugh. Weird.
“MOMMA!” I yelled. In came my walking incubator who held me for nine months.
“Oh, Mase. Who’s your friend?” She asked. Mom knows all my friends. Bit of a surprise for me to bring a hunk into my home. If she wasn’t so naive, she would’ve assumed he was my boyfriend.
“Mom, this is Ben. He’s from Cali and needs a place to stay.” I explained.
“Pleasure to meet you ma’am.” He said. I leaned a bit closer to him.
“You don’t need to act like a gentleman.” I whispered.
“I was raised properly, idiot.” He chuckled.
“Ooh, Cali. Have you ever met a celebrity? And are the beaches really that nice?” Mom asked. Ben began to sweat a bit.
“Yes and yes.” he said, though he sounded hesitant.
“Mom!” I said to stop her from talking. “I’m taking him to the guest room.” I said.
“Lunch’ll be ready in a few minutes. Clean up.” She screamed. We walked up the stairs and I led Ben who would stop to look at all the pictures in the hallway.
“Aww you’re so little here.” He awed.
“Yeah. That’s called being a baby.” I sarcastically said. I opened the door to the room next to mine.
“Ooh this looks comfortable.” He said. Pretty sure that’s a nice way of saying it’s not that great but passable to some expectations.
“There’s the bathroom across from here. The window opens to let in cold air. Trust me, it gets hot during this time around.” I said.
“Perf.” He responded. We sat on the bed in silence.
“So…” I said. “What’s your family like?” I asked.
“”Er, they’re like any other family.” Feel like he’s lying. “They’re… let’s say… royalty.” He said.
“Oh, like the Kardashians?” I asked.
“Yeah… something like that.”
“What do they do?” I asked.
“Um, order people around.” He mumbled
“So like CEOs.” I responded.
“Mmhmm. Sure.” I feel like there’s something he’s not saying. I figure I’ll let him keep his secrets since I barely just met the man. I just hope he isn’t some wanted outlaw or missing person.
You can never know who someone is.
“Kiddos! Lunch!” Mom yelled.
“Wash your hands. See you downstairs.” I said.
“Thank you, Mason. For letting me stay here. I’ll make it up to you.” He said.
“Wanna make it up to me? Buy me ice cream.”
“You got it.” He snapped his fingers. Someone take me before I hop on this man and ride him towards the sunset.
I exited the room before I said something I’ll regret.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 4
Ben’s POV
Nothing is better than a home cooked meal. Mason’s mom’s cooking was the best in the land. It was food I would pay for.
“So uh, mom told me to give you these.” Mason entered the room I am staying in and put a bag on the bed. “There’s a toothbrush, soap, conditioner-”
“You got me conditioner?” I asked.
“Um, yeah. I noticed your hair looked soft.” He blushed.
“You were looking at my hair?” I asked him. I wanted to see him mumble and freak out.
“… shut up! Good night, Ben.” He said and left the room.
“Good night!” I yelled back at him.
I got up and went to brush my teeth. This bathroom is so cute!
As I layed in bed, I got a call from my sis Katherine.
“Hey gremlin. Wassup?” I asked.
“Ben, father is FUMING right now!” She said into the phone. “He’s been yelling at everyone ever since he saw you were gone! He’s meeting with the prime minister of the UK and sending the royal guard to surrounding countries.” Kat said.
“Does he have any suspicions about the US?” I asked.
“Not yet. But if they don’t find you here, the US is next.”
“And what about mother?”
“She’s been spending time calming father down. It’s like she’s the only one who can calm him.”
“And you?” I asked.
“As long as I ignore father, I don’t get yelled at. But be warned. When you come back, don’t expect father to accept you with open arms.” Kat warned. That sent a chill down my spine.
“I know. The old man is always angry.” I said.
“So, meet anyone?” She asked.
“Yeah, two people so far.” I said.
“Oh yeah? Who are they?” I can feel the smirk on her face.
“This guy Mason and his mom. They’re letting me stay with them for a while.”
“Mason, huh? Do you feel anything about this Mason?” She asked. She knows that I swing both ways. It’s very accepted in our kingdom for people to be queer. We’re very progressive.
“I won’t lie, kinda. He’s smaller than me. I actually met him by running into him. We both fell back and I told him where the nearest hotel was at. He invited me to stay with him in the guest room.”
“Awww, he’s a keeper.” She cooed.
“It’s not like that, Kat! I don’t even know if I like him or not.”
“You’re basically living with him. Hmm, King Mason I. Has a nice ring to it.” I buried my face in the pillow and squealed.
“Stopppppp! No! Next you’ll be choosing our wedding date and kids’ names.” I told her. Kat chuckled, clearly enjoying seeing me become a mess. A loud boom came from the other line.
“Shit! I think I hear dad! I gotta go and clear my call history! Bye Ben!” Before I could say goodbye, she hung up.
I put my arms under my head and looked over to the wall that I share with Mason. Is he asleep? Or did he overhear my conversation?
I’ll need a bit more time to see if I like Mason. But do I want to like him? Eventually, I’ll have to return home on another continent. IF, and that’s a very big if, IF I fall for someone, would they want to come to Artois with me and be all in for the idea of becoming a royal.
It’s better than eventually being forced into an arranged marriage. I’ve heard of many kings and queens before me who were too late to find true love and were forced into a marriage.
So far, the main bachelors are the remnants of the Habsburgs, ya’know, the ones that lost the crown because they were so inbred they didn’t have any more offsprings.
I adjusted myself and slowly began to drift off to sleep, thinking of absolutely nothing.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 5
Mason’s POV
“It’s hot ass fuck today!” Ben said as he barged into my room like he owned the place.
“My friend Carol invited me to the pool.” I said.
“Perfect! Let’s go!” He said.
We packed a few things like sunscreen and made our way to the town’s pool. On our way there, I couldn’t stop staring at Ben’s legs. They were so… sexy! Who knew legs were sexy!? His are!
“MASON!” I heard a voice yell out my name when we entered the gated area. I looked around until I found Carol, waving over to us. She had some seats saved. Bless her.
“Carol!” I said and hugged her. She smiled and turned her attention to Ben. Oh right! Ben is new. No one has seen Ben before.
“Carol, this is Ben. He’s from California. Ben, this is Carolina, my best friend.” I said. Ben gave his amazing smile to Carol.
“Ohoho, Mason! I didn’t know you had a boyfriend!” She said. Classic Carol. Finding ways to make things uncomfortable.
“No, Carol. He’s just a friend.” I said. Someone yelled ‘cannonball’ and a huge splash came from the pool.
“Here,” I said and grabbed the stuff Ben was holding. “I’ll put our stuff down.” I said.
“Thanks, Mase.” He said, using the nickname only my mom calls me. Not even Carol is allowed to call me that. And she noticed.
“Mase? I can’t even say that!” She said.
“Cause I’m different!” Ben said.
“Why don’t you go into the pool, Ben.” I told him like he was a child.
Ben removed his shoes and slid off his shirt. Holy fuck I need a cold shower.
This man is ripped. His muscular chest glistened from the sweat forming from the heat. He had slight hair on his pecs and a treasure trail leading down from his belly button and lower.
“You’re drooling.” Carol whispered in my ear. I snapped out and wiped my mouth. I looked around. I wasn’t the only one admiring Adonis here.
“I’ll see you in a few minutes.” He said. “Could you get snacks ready for me?” He asked. How can I say no to him? He’s adorable.
“Yeah sure.” I said. Ben turned and jumped into the pool, making me wet in more ways than one.
“Oh my God just kiss already!” Carol yelled, sitting in her seat and putting on her heart shaped shades. Her red hair blew in the wind, wavy and long.
“I wish. I don’t know. Ben is great and all, but I don’t want to fall for him. He’s not staying here for the whole summer.” I said.
“Why is Ben here in Verona? Where’s the rest of his family?” She asked.
“Great question. I really don’t know. All I know is that his family is powerful, CEOs for some companies.” I said.
“Don’t you think it’s weird that he just kinda popped out of nowhere? Someone like Ben can go anywhere he wants but he choses here?” Carol said. Now that she mentions it, it doesn’t really add up.
“I’m sure he has his reasons. I’ll probably ask him later.” I laid in my seat and watched Ben.
“Looks like he’s made friends with Dylan and Carl.” She said. I saw Ben throwing the ball back and forth with other people, his biceps flexing when he stretched his arms.
“I get the feeling that Ben might do something to my life.” I stared at Ben longer.
“Like how?” She asked, catching on to my pondering.
“I don’t know how exactly. But I get the feeling this summer might be different from the years before.” I pulled out the snacks and prepped everything for Ben. I know he doesn’t like the crust. And he drinks juice from a cup, not from the box. Poshy fuck!
“Have you noticed he kinda has a French accent?” Carol asked.
“HUH?” I asked. French accent? I hadn’t noticed it before. It’s like he turned it off for a while. French? Cali people don’t have French accents!
Yeah, something is up with Ben.
It’s only a matter of time before I discover it myself.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 6
Mason’s POV
“Are you planning on getting in soon?” Ben asked me. He crossed his arms on the edge of the pool and looked up at me. His blonde hair was wet and sticking all over the place.
“Ehh…” I looked around at everyone showing their skin and immediately felt self conscious. “Nah. I’ll just stay here.” I said.
“Alright man. Just saying, water’s fine.” He said. He turned and went under water before coming back up and arching his back like Ariel from the Little Mermaid.
“Who is that guy? He looks hot as fuck.” A girl next to me said.
“I don’t swing that way, but…” A guy said.
“They’re talking about your man.” Carol said to me.
“I, wh- huh? He’s not my man!” I said a little too loud.
“You sure? Cause Amelia is basically naked and flirting with him but Ben keeps looking back at you.” She said. I turned and caught a quick glimpse at Ben. When he noticed me staring, he turned away.
“It could be a coincidence. Maybe he’s actually looking at you.” I said to Carol. Carol facepalmed herself.
“Since y’all got here, Ben has been looking back at you so many times.” I kept thinking. No. Maybe he’s just getting closer to me. I looked back at Ben to see Amelia beginning to sit a little too close to him. Ben moved away.
“Uh-oh. She’s goin in.” Carol nudged me. “Better do something quickly.” She said.
“Like what?” I looked at the diving board. Shit! Should I jump off? I used to be really good at jumping, either off of diving boards or to conclusions.
I got up from my seat and took off my shirt. Carol lightly smacked my back, making me red in the face. Immediately Ben’s head turned to stare at my chest. Not too skinny, just enough to be toned.
“He’s looking.” I whispered to Carol.
“Perfect! That’s step one!” She said.
I began to walk and made my way to the diving board. It’s bigger in person! Like, 10 meters tall! Do I really want to do this?
I climbed up the board slowly.
“ALRIGHT MASON!” Ben’s voice cheered me on. A few cheers came on. I’m doing this to impress a guy.
“Okay, okay, okay. Breathe.” I told myself. My feet landed on the top plank and stepped on it. I slowly waddled my way to the edge and made the mistake of looking down. Not only was I beginning to chicken out, but almost everyone was looking at me.
Carol blew bubble gum, Amelia was touching Ben’s shoulder, and Ben was watching me with huge eyes and an idiot grin.
“JUMP!” Someone yelled.
“I BELIEVE IN YOU, MASE!” Ben yelled, giving me confidence.
One. Two Three-
So, you know those moments in life when you know you are doing something you’re gonna regret but can’t stop yourself because your body is already moving? So your mind is just right there watching as your ultimately fuck up your life. You know those moments?
Yeah, that happened when my foot slipped and I fell face first into the pool. My ears, full of water, could hear the groans of people who witnessed my disgrace.
My body floated in the deep abyss. This reminds me of when I was first created in my mother’s womb. Just me, in fluids, swimming around.
Except I’m not swimming. I forgot how to swim. Now I’m floating down. Going deeper and deeper as the sunlight begins to disappear. And then my vision begins to blacken.
I start to panic and flail in the water. But no matter what, nothing worked. So I went to sleep underwater.
This is how I die.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 7
Ben’s POV
“OOOH! That must’ve hurt!” Carl, the guy I just met in the pool, said after Mason’s epic fail from the diving board.
“That guy got some balls!” Someone said.
I looked into the deep end where Mason had entered.
“Hmm.” The girl next to me said and touched my shoulder. “Oh well. Where were we?” She said.
“Nowhere.” I said. I slipped out of the pool quickly and looked into the deep end. I turned to Carol who gave me a skeptical look.
“Is he okay?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Mason’s a good swimmer. He should’ve come up by now.” She said. She lowered her heart-shaped glasses and looked in the deep end. I squinted and could’ve sworn I saw Mason shaking before his body went limp.
“Oh God!” Carol screamed. “He needs help!” She yelled. The entire pool became alert, knowing the full issue now.
Without thinking, I dove into the water and began swimming as fast as I could. Thank you mother for making me take those swimming lessons when I was little.
I reached the bottom and saw Mason’s body was limp. I scooped him up in my arms and began to carry him by swimming up.
I broke the surface and threw Mason’s body onto the deck and climbed up. Carol quickly bent down and checked his chest.
“He’s not breathing!” She said. “Anyone know CPR!!” She said to the crowd around us.
“I do!” I said. I bent down next to Mason and first checked his pulse.
It’s weak, but still there. I conjoined my hands and pushed.
‘Ah-ah-ah-ah, stayin alive, stayin alive.’ I sung in my head.
I grabbed Mason’s lips and gave him CPR, mouth to mouth. This is no time to enjoy this! I need to save him!
“C’mon, Mase!” I said while continuing my method.
I kept the movements consistent, making sure I didn’t speed up or slow down.
“Has anyone called 911!” Someone yelled.
“What’s the number!?” Another yelled.
I focused on the man before me.
After two minutes, Mason started coughing up water. He sat up and spat out water.
“Ooooh fuck!” He groaned while clutching his stomach. “Shit that hurt!” He said.
“Thank God, Mase. I thought I lost you!” I said. Carol came and put a towel over Mase’s body. He clutched it and hid his face.
“Did that actually happen?” He muttered.
“Oh yeah! Everyone saw it.” Carol said, not making Mase feel better.
“You saved me, Ben!” Mase said.
“I guess.” I blushed a bit. Mase touched his lips, his face redding up.
“Can we go home?” He asked.
“Yeah. I’ll carry everything. You don’t move a muscle!” I said. I helped Mase up, enjoying our bare chests touching.
I picked up our stuff. For the first time, I was serving someone else.
“Call me when you get home.” Carol said. She gave me a wink.
“Bye Carol.” He said. We walked out of the pool, still wet and hungry.
That was our first kiss. If you could call it a kiss. His lips were so soft. He must use Burt’s Bees, the good stuff.
I need more of him.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 8
Mason’s POV
Why did I do that? Fuck me! Can a sinkhole swallow me up right now? And now I gotta walk home with Ben after he saved me with the work on his hands and lips.
“You sure you don’t want to put a shirt on?” I softly asked him. I was staring at his hard back.
“Nah, It’s still hot.” He said. Yes it is. Very hot indeed.
“Hey, Ben,” I said. I stopped walking and Ben turned around and faced me. His muscles were sexy. “Thank you, for saving my ass back there.” I said.
“Don’t worry about it.” He put his hand on my shoulder.
“Right.” I responded. I walked forward and Ben caught up to me. Our shoulders bumped into each other occasionally. At some point, I thought these bumps were too common and maybe Ben was doing them on purpose.
“Carol seems like a fun girl.” Ben said, breaking the silence.
“Yeah. We met in middle school.” I said. “Middle school wasn’t fun for me. Carol came along and kinda helped me come out my shell.”
“Adorable.” He muttered.
“What about you? How was your middle school experience?” I asked.
“Oh, erm, uh, I was homeschooled.” He says.
“Could you be any more rich?” I giggled. But then the memory of me almost dying popped up in my head and I stopped and cringed mentally.
We walked up to my home and entered. Mom had left the AC on so the house was nice and cool.
“I’ll take a shower upstairs.” Ben said. Out of nowhere, he slid down his shorts standing nude in front of me.
“BEN! WHAT THE FUCK!?” I covered my eyes but left gaps in my fingers to still see something. I saw a quick glimpse of his third leg. Wait. That’s not a third leg!!!
“Forgot nudity was different here.” He laughed. He picked up his shorts and walked upstairs. “Enjoy the view.” He yelled before running up.
Just gonna pretend that didn’t happen.
I sat at the dinner table. Ben and Mom were talking foreign politics which is a weird subject for Ben to be so knowledgeable about. So I sat here. I picked the meatball with my fork and I remembered Ben’s… balls.
“Mase. Stop playing with your food!” Mom said from across the table. Ben laughed and returned to talking.
I sighed in my seat, waiting for these two to finish talking.
Ben and I walked upstairs to our rooms. The entire time, Ben was behind me not saying a word. He can see my back, one of my most vulnerable places.
Before I entered my room, Ben stopped me.
“Listen, Mase. Don’t worry about what happened today. You were very brave.” He said.
“I fell off and almost drowned! How could I not be embarrassed?” I said, refusing to look up at Ben.
“Well, I thought it was amazing.” He said. Suddenly, his opinion mattered to me.
“Yeah yeah, whatever.” I muttered. “Go to bed. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said.
“Mase.” He chuckled to himself. “You’re an interesting fellow.” He went to his door. I held the doorknob in my hand. I looked at Ben who opened his door. He looked back at me and winked at me before entering his room.
Now I’m left in the hallway wondering what the hell is happening between Ben and I. I’ve started to pick up his subtle flirts. Or is he being friendly? Ben kept looking at me at the pool and saved me from drowning.
His mouth was on my mouth. We basically were kissing at that point.
My body shuddered at that. Carol is definitely going to be teasing me about that.
“Dammit!” I said and hit my head on the door.
Could I be falling for him?
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 9
Ben’s POV
“I’m telling you Kat. I think I like him.” I said into the phone to my sister, amused by my time in America.
“I think you do. Remember that one time I almost drowned and you didn’t do shit.” She laughed.
“How’s the search going over there?” I asked.
“Well, father has scouted west Europe. He even checked Andorra and Malta. He’s getting angry, Benny. And mother is freaking out that something bad happened to you.” She said.
“Shit.” I muttered to myself. “Maybe I should come back. I don’t want them to stress over me.”
“Nonsense, Ben. You stay over there at least for a while longer. I’ll help mom. And try to land Mason.” She teased.
“I’ll talk to you soon! And I’ll try.” I said. We hung up and I sat in the backyard staring into the trees.
“Everything okay?” A soft voice asked me. Mason sat next to me on the bench.
“Yeah. It’s just family stuff.”
“Wanna talk about it?” He asked. I can still sense the tension after I saved him.
“Nah.” I sighed out. Mason looked a bit… occupied in his mind. “I think I just need something to take my mind off of.” As soon as I said that, my phone dinged. It was a text from Carl. We exchanged numbers at the pool.
I pulled out my phone and checked the text. Carl invited me to a house party he’s having.
“Hey, do you want to accompany me to a party?” I asked him.
“No. I literally almost drowned. I can’t show my face in public.” He nervously said.
“Please? I’ll be by your side. I promise.” I told him. He thought about it for a while.
“I guess.” Mase said.
We went to get dressed. I put on some comfortable clothes and waited for Mase to finish. I led the way to the house and made talk with Mase.
Arriving at the house, the outside was already full of teens dancing and drinking. I slowed my walk to let Mase catch up.
I was hit with the smell of alcohol, the cheap kind.
“BEN!” Someone yelled. Carl handed me a beer. “Drink up, buddy!” He cheered. He turned to Mase. “Feeling alright, little man?” He asked Mson despite Mase being about 4 inches taller than him.
“Yeah.” Mase muttered out.
“Wanna drink?” I asked Mase.
“Nah. I need to be your DW.”
“My what?” I asked.
“Designated walker.” He smiled at me.
“Suit yourself.” I chugged the beer, ignoring the bitter taste.
I grabbed Mase’s hand and dragged him to the backyard where I was able to get roaring drunk. Mase would stand there watching me drink, sometimes trying to stop me. However, what’s that saying again? YOLO? And I have to be king soon.
And then everything was blurry.
“Ben? Ben?” Mase lightly slapped my face. I groaned. “Shit! Alright big man, let’s go home.” He said. “Up you go.” He hooked my arm around his neck and helped me up.
“Mmmm no!” I tried to say. “Shit! Dad’s gonnnna bee mad!” I slurred out.
“Ben! Walk.” He said. The cold from the night hit me. I shivered and leaned closer to Mase’s body for warmth.
“Mm. You feel sooooooo warm.” I said.
“Ben?” He said. I realized I was nuzzling into his neck. I stopped when Ben turned to look at me.
I leaned in to kiss him on the lips.
In my drunken state, even I knew this was it. It was perfect. Like finding the Rosetta Stone.
When I left his lips, Mase’s face was red.
“We should get home.” He said. I turned and walked.
I hope he doesn’t regret the kiss. Because I sure don’t.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 10
Ben’s POV
Christ! I kissed him.
So I did what any person would do during an awkward moment.
I threw up.
“Ben!” Mason yelled as my vomit landed next to his shoes.
“Whoops.” I drunkenly said and wiped my mouth.
“You’re such a child. Let’s get you cleaned up.” He said. He carried me until we reached his home. We silently entered the house and carefully made our way to the second floor bathroom.
“Let’s take this off.” Mase said. He took off my shirt and sat me next to the toilet.
And then I passed out.
I woke up to a blinding light and a horrible headache. I groaned and realized I was only wearing boxers. Memories of the night before slowly were pieced together.
Shit! I kissed Mason. I tried really hard to remember what he did afterwards. He didn’t pull away. And then I threw up. I cringed for embarrassing myself in front of him. Very unroyalty of me.
“Ben, are you awake?” Mase asked from the closed door. I pulled up the blanket to cover myself. Then I thought, this is Mase. So I pulled the blanket lower to expose my body.
“I’m awake!” I yelled back. He opened the door and held a tray in his hands with breakfast.
“I brought you this to help with your hangover. I made French toast with some fruit and an omelet.” He said. I smiled at him as he sat the tray in my lap.
“How thoughtful of you.” I awed at Mase.
“It’s nothing. I’m sure you would do the same if I was passed out.” He said as his eyes trailed down my body and near my groin.
“Did I pass out?” I asked.
“Mmhmm. I cleaned you up and brought you to bed.”
“Did anything happen last night?” I asked, trying to see if Mason remembered the kiss.
“Well…” He looked away, blushing. “Something did happen.” He said.
“Well what was it?”
“Umm.” He stuttered. “You kissed me.” A moment of silence came down.
“I didn’t mean to do that.” I lied. “I guess it was just in the heat of the moment.” I replied.
“Yeah, I totally understand. No hard feelings, right?” He asked.
“For sure. Let’s just pretend nothing happened.” I said sadly. In truth, I hoped maybe he liked it. But to be fair, I kissed him out of nowhere. If he feels uncomfortable, then that’s valid.
“Want some French toast?” I asked him.
“Yeah. Hand some over.” He said.
We ate breakfast together. It’s like the kiss never happened.
“Carol invited us to the theater. Wanna go together?” Mase asked.
“What movie is playing?” I asked.
“Honestly, who cares. I’ve been craving movie theater popcorn lately.”
“I’ve never had movie theater popcorn.” I said. “I’ve actually never been to a public theater.”
“Shut up! Seriously?” He was shocked.
“Yes. I had my own theater at home.”
“Well, you’re coming with me. You’ll see how us commoners like to watch movies.” Ben bit into my French toast.
Technically speaking, could this count as a date? I’ve never been on a date before. Father never allowed me to date young because he feared I would “lose my sanity around a woman”.
Like, mate, I was 13! I’m not focusing on having kids.
I already had to train to be king at a young age. Love was the last thing on my mind.
But I guess those roles are reversed right now.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 11
Mason’s POV
I watched Ben from a distance as he and some of the other boys played with a frisbee. I sat under a tree with Carol.
“It’s weird that Ben can easily order people to do stuff.” Carol said to me. I turned and sure enough Ben was directing people where to stand.
“Yeah. I’ve noticed that too.”
“I have a theory.” Carol turned to me. “What if Ben is a runaway?” She said. “Think about it. He doesn’t talk about his family. He suddenly comes to town out of nowhere. And his accent. It just doesn’t add up.”
“True that. And it doesn’t make sense that he kissed me after the party.” I said. Carol let out the loudest screech in existence. I covered my ears and the boys turned to look at us.
“How!? Why?!” She quickly muttered out.
“He was drunk. Just kissed me. And then he threw up.” I recalled the memory.
“Oof! And did he mention it afterwards?”
“Yeah. I just told him we should stay friends.”
“Nu-uh. Tell you what. We’re going to the movies tonight. And Ben is coming. Come to my house before and we’ll choose an outfit that’ll make you look dashing.” She snapped her fingers.
“I guess. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen?” I said.
Ben had agreed to go to the movies. While he was out with Dylan, I was at home looking for an outfit. Carol and I have gone through my wardrobe and have found nothing.
“What is this?” She held up a cardigan.
“It’s a cardigan?” I said.
“Get rid!” She threw it. I caught it while Carol went deeper. She pulled out a light blue crewneck sweatshirt. “THIS!” She held it up.
“You sure?” I asked.
“Defo! He’s gonna look at you and go ‘Damn Mase, you look amazing!’.” She said.
I obliged and put on the outfit we (more like Carol) chose. We met up with the boys at the theater. Ben was there holding Dylan in a chokehold. I just stood back and watched until Dylan surrendered.
“What’s going on here, boys?” Carol asked.
“Dylan bet that I wouldn’t beat him in a wrestle match.” Ben stood back and looked at me. His eyes bulged out. He trailed down and back up. I waved at him and he waved back.
“Shall we see a movie?” I asked.
“Umm, yeah. I’ll pay for everything.” Ben said. He bought tickets and snacks for us. Luckily not many were coming to the theater so we had extra time to fool around.
“Ben, you’ll sit next to Mason.” Carol said who decided she wants to pick where we sit. She winked at me when we sat at the edge. So here I was, Ben next to me. Shoulders touching in the dark.
“What’s this movie?” Ben asked in my ear.
“Umm, a superhero movie.” I said back.
“Cool. Cool.” He said. “By the way, you look amazing.” He added. I slouched back in my seat and internally slammed my head.
“You two! Movie’s starting!” Carol said to us from her seat. We shut up and turned to face the screen.
For the first 30 minutes, it was just occasional glances at one another. I brushed my hand accidentally on his. His fingers twitched and I felt them slightly extend like he was reaching out. I was enjoying toying with him a bit.
Ben picked up his drink and sipped it. I made the mistake and grabbed his hand when something was on screen that scared me. The sudden action made Ben drop his drink which landed on my sweater.
“Shit! Mase! I’m sorry!” He said. He got napkins and patted the liquid but it wasn’t drying. Everyone turned to us. Carol was amused.
“It’s fine, Ben. I’ll just go to the bathroom.” I said. I got up and awkwardly walked to the bathroom. I took off my sweater. My shirt was still dry, thank God. But this sweater, which I purposefully wore for Ben, was now ruined.
“Mase?” Ben walked into the bathroom. He looked at my sweater. “Shit! I’ll buy you a new one! I promise!” He said.
“It’s fine Ben. I’ve had this for years.” I shivered from the cold. Ben took off his jacket.
“Have mine. It’s the least I can do so you don’t freeze to death.” He put his jacket over me. It was a bit big but cozy and warm. And it smelled like him.
“What about you?” I asked.
“I’m fine. Used to the cold.” He said. Which doesn’t make sense cause he’s from Cali. I know some places are cold, but not that much. So how can he be used to the cold?
“Thanks, Ben.” I said. “I’ll be out in a minute.” I said. Ben nodded and walked out. I looked at myself in the mirror.
This jacket is… nice. Very nice. And looks expensive. I smelled it again.
His scent brings a sense of comfort.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 12
Ben’s POV
“Kiddos, I’m going to town. Stay here and don’t do anything stupid.” Mase’s mom said as she clutched her purse. “Mase! I swear you better not bring in a random dog again! And Ben!” She turned to me. “I made your favorite sandwiches on the table.” She turned and headed for the door.
“Thanks, Ms. Howard.” I turned to Mase who was snarking at me.
“She treats you more like a son than me.” He huffed. “She literally treats you like a king.” My back froze. I chuckled a bit.
“Ha ha. Yeah. Like a king.” I tried not to sound too off.
We were watching a movie on TV. This one is much smaller than the one I’m used to. But at least I can still see what’s going on. Just as a character was about to strike, the power went out. I thought at first it was a part of the film but Mase got up.
“Dammit!” He banged on the TV like it would help. A loud thunder was outside. In an instant, it began to pour outside. I’ve never seen a place flood faster. The road was starting to become submerged in water.
“Ooh! It’s raining!” I said. I gawked outside and watched the rain. I heard a zipper and turned to see Mase putting on a heavy jacket.
“I’m going outside and check the fuse box. You,” He turned to me. “Stay here and don’t do anything!” He began to walk out.
“What if you’re in danger?” I asked.
“Then I’ll die. That wouldn’t be so bad.” He exited the front door. I was alone in the dark. This is like being back home in the large castle at night as me and Kat are wandering around trying to find late night snacks.
I sat on the couch not knowing what to do. Is this how people lived before the internet? Just sat around and breathed? That’s so boring. A few minutes went by and nothing. And then a few more. I started to panic a bit. I know Mase said not to look for him but I love breaking rules.
Why not? I thought to myself. I slipped on some shoes and a jacket and made my way to the front door. Upon opening it, I was hit with a gust of wind that almost knocked me back. Water droplets hit my face. I exited and closed the door quickly so no rain got inside.
Outside was a bit dark since the rain clouds obstructed the sun. I thought back to where the fuse box was. Never Eat Soggy Waffles. It’s on the east side of the house.
I walked and almost slipped in the mud. Should’ve brought some sneakers instead of my Doc Martens. I’m too deep in now.
A flash of lightning came and partially illuminated the area in front of me. I could’ve sworn I saw someone on the floor. I approached closer and leaned down. Another burst of light confirmed it was a person. It was Mason. He was on the floor unconscious.
“Mase? Mase!?” I began to shake him aggressively. He didn’t move. “Mase! Shit!” I said. I turned and saw the fuse box was open. I have no idea how to work this thing. I touched something and sparks flew out. I pulled the red lever and a humming sound came out.
I bent down and picked up Mase. He got a bit of mud on me but it doesn’t matter. I need to get him inside and make sure he’s okay. I dragged him along and put in all the work.
“Hang in there!” I said to him as if he could hear me. I stumbled around the house and almost fell on some bushes. The sound of the thunder didn’t make this any better.
I entered the home quickly. The TV was blaring loud noises and the kitchen light was on. So I guess my tinkering worked. The weight of Mase took over and I put him on the floor gently.
“Mase! Wake up!” I slapped his face. This is the second time I have to save him.
“You can stop slapping me now.” Mase’s rough voice said. I jumped back and hugged him tightly.
“MASON!” I almost choked him. “I thought I lost you! Don’t ever do that again!” I said. I didn’t let myself cry. Because A: I don’t cry. And B: It’ll show I’m starting to care for him. I do care for him, but I don’t want to care for him.
“How’d I get in here?” He asked. He sat up. “Did I fix it?” He asked.
“I dragged you in here. I know you said not to go out but I began to worry. And you kinda fixed it but I finished it for you.” I said. Mase quickly got up and began to go upstairs. “Where are you going?” I asked. I removed my muddy shoes and followed him.
“I need a shower.” He said.
“Hang on! Do you remember what caused you to pass out?” I asked as I climbed the stairs. Mase was treading his way. I don’t think he should be walking right now.
“I guess it was the electricity.” He said. He refused to look at me, like he was ashamed.
“Can we at least get you checked up. You never know. Accidents can be fatal. Like this one time when my cousin’s dad got-” He cut me off.
“Ben!” He turned and grabbed my shoulders. His sudden movement made me shut up quickly. “I’m fine. I promise. Now can you please let me shower so I can get this mud off me?” He said.
“S-sure.” I stuttered out. Mase began to take off his jacket and then shirt. “Uh…” I said as I looked at his chest.
Out of instinct, my hands reached out and placed it on his toned chest. My fingers brushed on his soft velvet-like skin.
“Ben?” Mase asked. I looked up and pulled my hand away. I just touched him! I can’t even control myself around him. I didn’t know what to say so I just left the bathroom and closed the door behind me. This is the first time I’ve ever touched anyone with wanting. Mason is different from anyone I’ve met. He’s sweet, caring, and sometimes annoying. But that’s what I like about him.
“Need any help?” I asked him from behind the door. The shower turned on.
“I’m fine, Ben! Can I shower in peace?” He asked. I left the bathroom, heading downstairs to eat some sandwiches.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 13
Mason’s POV
I should’ve known what would’ve happened when I went out into the rain. For fuck’s sake, I’m terrified of THUNDER! But I still felt like I needed to prove myself after my humiliating attempt at impressing Ben at the pool. It was fine for a while. I just kept telling myself that nothing bad will happen to me. But I let my guard down. I saw a flash of lightning and heard the thunder roar. It was so close I thought I was gonna get struck.
My inner mind took over. Rather than try to get inside quickly or clear my mind, I blacked out again. I landed in the mud and woke up later to Ben slapping my telling me to wake up. His face wore a worried expression. Almost like he was scared for me.
I was ashamed. I fucked up again. I let my fear take over me. Why couldn’t I just be a man? It’s what everyone’s told me all my life. It’s why my father left a few years ago. He couldn’t bear having a wimpy son. Who knows where he’s at now. He could be dead for all I care.
And let’s not forget Ben touching my chest, which was the cherry on top to a whole emotional rollercoaster. I’m not blind to Ben’s recent approaches. And I’m not blind to his hesitancy for intimacy. The man is probably going to be leaving in a few weeks. It would be useless to fall for him. But it’s too late. There’s a reason why I’m taking a cold shower right now.
Even if I couldn’t be in a relationship with Ben, at least I can try to make his vacation a lot better. Make his boring summer a summer to remember.
“We have to talk.” I said as I walked into the living room. Ben set down his sandwich and just watched me.
“Yeah. We have to. Your mom called. She said she’s gonna be in town a while longer because of the storm. So we have the house to ourselves.” He said.
“Did you tell her about my accident?” I said as I sat in the chair next to him.
“Nah. I figured your mom would drive back here quickly and possibly get into an accident.” He leaned on his hand on the table and looked at me with intriguing eyes.
“So… about earlier.” I said. “What’s happening between us?” I asked. Ben thought for a moment, as if he was conflicted about what to say.
“I didn’t want this to happen.” He whispered to himself. “Um, it started when I ran into you.” He said.
“Uh-huh.”
“And it got worse when I saw you shirtless at the pool.” He added.
“Yeah. When you gave me mouth-to-mouth.” I chuckled.
“And then when I kissed you when I was drunk.”
“And today when you touched me.” I said, ending our tirade of small but impactful moments.
“I’m scared.” He put his face into his hands. “Because I’m starting to like you! And it’s only going to hurt you and me.” He brought his face back up. His blue eyes were glossed with tears.
“Is it because you’re leaving eventually?” I asked. He nodded yes.
“It’ll make me not want to go back. But I’ll have to.”
“But we can still have fun.” I said. I reached out and held his hand in mine. I rubbed his knuckles. “Truth is, I like you too. But I was too scared to tell you.”
“So what are we waiting for?” He asked. He wiped his teary eyes.
“Finish where we left off earlier.”
“You drive me crazy.” He pulled me by my shirt and planted his lips on mine. At first I didn’t do anything and sat there. But when he moved his lips, mine moved as well.
He tasted like my mom’s sandwiches. My mom’s sandwiches are amazing so that means he tastes amazing, by the way! His fist clenched my shirt. I brought my hands to his head and cradled him. I gripped his blonde hair and refused to let go.
Ben’s other free hand can and cupped my left cheek. He touched me exactly like how I wanted to be touched. With care but with passion. I closed my eyes, imagining a perfect picture of Ben. He would occasionally grunt, signaling his enjoyment. We pulled apart at the same time and gathered our breaths.
“That was my first kiss.” I said.
“Mines too.” He said.
“But before we continue on,” I said and stopped Ben from leaning in closer. “I have to know more about you. So I at least know you aren’t a murderer or a drug lord.” I said.
“Umm. Okay. I like long walks along my family’s garden. I play piano, violin, trumpet, and flute. I can speak six languages. I have a sister named Katherine, though sometimes I call her gremlin. Magnolias are my favorite flowers. Hello Kitty scares the shit out of me. I cry at the end of Titanic and West Side Story. And my celebrity crush is Zendaya.” He said.
“Wow.” I said flabbergasted. “That’s a lot to take in. But I’m glad you told me.” I kissed his cheek. “And gremlin?” I laughed at the nickname.
“Yeah.” He stupidly blushed. “Kat was afraid of gremlins when she was little. Always called the guar- my parents into the room to ‘scare them off’.” I didn’t fail to notice him catching himself from saying something. I’ll let it slide.
“Magnolias are my favorite flowers too.” I said. “Especially the pink ones.” I like the pink ones cause they remind me of the ones Carol used to bring me when my dad left. And they were the flowers that I used to grab when I learned how to walk. And my grandparents used to plant them in the backyard when they first came here.
“If only you could see my home. It’s full of the most beautiful magnolias you can ever imagine.” He said.
“Do you miss home?” I asked. He pondered the question for a while. A mixture of confusion was on his face.
“To some extent. But my parents are putting too much responsibility on me to take over the empire.” He spoke in a somewhat peculiar manner. Interesting use of the word empire. There’s no way there’s a deeper meaning.
“So you came here to get away for a while, huh? You wanted freedom.” I felt sympathetic to him. I mean, I don’t own a large company, but I do understand worrying about the weight of everything. The stress that can break someone easily.
“Mmhmm. Just for a while. All I want is to have fun.”
“And are you having fun?” I asked.
“I was. I was enjoying kissing someone.” He replied back.
“What do you say we continue the fun, then?” I asked. My hand was on his thigh.
“What are we waiting for?” He asked. I pulled him close and planted my lips on his.
Deep down, I need to remind myself this is only for a few more weeks. So I better enjoy every moment. Then I’ll go back to craving what’s not there anymore. And Ben can go back to being the successful heir he’ll be and forget the Minnesota kid who took his first kiss.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 14
Ben’s POV
Our kissing session was nothing I’ve ever felt before. Before, I always thought kissing was something people did in movies. Or in scenarios where they wanted everyone to know they were together. But kissing Mason, I realized there was another reason people did it.
It’s to show how much they admire… like… love… someone. All this makes me wonder why people don’t kiss 24/7. It’s so wonderful to feel the passion and heat from someone. Both people feel the exact same thing.
I decided to buy Mason some magnolias. He already has some in his garden but I figured why not get him a bouquet. I’m sure he’ll love this. As I was walking out of the flower shop, magnolias in hand, I got a call from my sister.
“Hey Kat-”
“BEN!” She yelled into the phone. I pulled it away from my ear before bringing it back.
“Yeah? What’s wrong?” I asked. Her voice was a bit shaky.
“Father’s investigating the pilot!” She said into the phone.
“Shit! Has the pilot confessed anything?” I asked. I paid a lot of money to the pilot to stay silent. But my father is king. He overrules my authority for now.
“I honestly don’t know. Everything is hectic here. Father keeps going on diatribes to anyone who speaks to him. And they’re looking into where the plane went.”
“What do I do then? I can’t let them find me now.” I began to panic.
“You need to lay low. Be as quiet as possible. But I’m pretty sure the US is next on dad’s list.”
“Fine! I just need like three more weeks. I need to get things in order before I leave.” I said.
“Is it that boy, Mason?” She asked. Her voice was now happier.
“I don’t have time to explain, but we made out.”
“FINALLY!” She sighed. “Just make sure you’re actually prepared to leave.” She hung up quickly. Problem is, I don’t want to abandon Mase. He’s one of the most influential people in my life.
That’ll be a problem for the future. I need to get these flowers to Mase. I entered his home and saw boxes on the table. He was running around getting things into bags.
“What’s going on here?” I asked a very tired and exhausted Mase. He stopped running and turned to me. He waited a while before catching his breath.
“Forgot to tell you. I do a charity thing for a shelter. I’m packing things right now.” He said. He looked down at the flowers.
“These are for you.” I held out the flowers. He got them and smelled them.
“They’re beautiful. Thanks, Ben.” He hugged me. “Can you help me?” He asked. I nodded and we took the boxes to the car. He hopped in and drove us to a building where a woman was waiting outside. “Wait here.” Mase said. He walked out and talked to the woman before he got back in and drove the car inside the building.
We got out of the car and began to get the boxes out of the car. We went back and forth and stacked them on a table.
“Thank you so much for this, Mason. We always appreciate your help.” The woman who talked to Mase earlier said. “And you too, Ben. Volunteers are always welcome.” She said to me. I blushed at someone appreciating my actions.
“Alright Ben, we’re done. You can wait in the car if you want.” He said. I turned and walked in.
I sat in the car and watched as Mase talked with a bunch of people.
My mind went into further imaginations and began thinking way too ahead. But I imagined it for a while.
King Mason Howard.
Mason has already proven himself to go out of his way to impress people. And the charity thing shows that he is selfless. He cares for other people. I can imagine Mason helping the kingdom and my people. And everyone would love him.
“Ben.” Mase’s voice snapped me out of my daydream/possible future.
“Mason.” I said back.
“Wanna get ice cream?” He asked.
“Of course.” I said. He drove for a while. “What got you into donating for the charity?” I asked.
“I figured that since my life is pretty much bland, the best someone like me could do is give back.”
“I love that.” I said.
He’s perfect.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 15
Mason’s POV
“LET’S GO, LOVEBIRDS!” Carol yelled at Ben and I. I blushed since she said that out loud and everyone obviously heard. Ben and I sat under a tree for shade as everyone else tossed a frisbee or took aesthetic photos for their Instagram.
“I made this for you.” Ben said to me. I turned to him and he held a hand-made flower crown. Yello, white, pink, and lavender flowers tied in a band. He slowly placed it on my head. “There, you’re my king now.” He said.
“It’s lovely, Ben.” I said. I need to ask him to teach me how to make one.
“We never made it official, but you do maybe…” He said and hesitated.
“Want me to be your boyfriend?” A gleeful smile spread on my face. Ben blushed, something he seems to only do to me. Everyone else sees Ben as a tall, strong, intimidating guy. But around me he becomes more emotional and vulnerable.
“Would you?” He asked. I immediately grabbed his hands and held them tight.
“Yes! Yes I would!” I eagerly said. Ben hugged me and didn’t let go. I can’t believe this! My first boyfriend! And it’s with the guy who was also my first kiss. He’s my favorite person, honestly. I can’t imagine a better person. Sure he has secrets that may be a walking red flag. But it’s Ben. I’m willing to let my guard down for him.
We began to walk down the hill to meet up with everyone else. I proudly showed off my flower crown.
“Guys! We’re going to get boba! Let’s go!” Carol yelled. I began to get excited. Flower crown! Boyfriend! And boba! Can life get any better?
A helicopter flew by us. A little too close to the ground. Ben quickly ducked his head and hid behind me. He made sure to cover his head. That’s something I’ll have to ask him later. What’s the reason for him to be hiding?
“So, boba?” Ben asked once the helicopter was far enough. We walked to the town center and came up to the boba shop.
“Ever had boba?” I asked him. He looked at the menu, wondering about everything.
“No. What is it?” He asked.
“Tapioca balls. They’re chewy and kinda sweet. You’ll have to try it cause I can’t explain it.” I said. I ordered for us and Ben insisted he pay. Him having money is a bonus!
Everyone sat outside the shop and chatted in nothingness. Ben and I sat close together although no one seemed to care.
“Mason. What’s the deal with you and Ben today?” Carol asked. Everyone seemed to turn to us and became silent. I sat there and Carol whispered sorry because she didn’t mean to drag the attention to us.
“Oh, I uh…” I said until Ben put his arm around me and pulled us close.
“Guys. Mase and I are dating.” He said. He smiled while Carol let out a ‘FINALLY’.
“Awesome!” Dylan yelled.
“I told you, Sandra! They’re so into each other!” Jessie said.
While Ben was distracted, I took out my phone and snapped a quick picture. After the flash is when he looked down. I showed him the picture which had him off guard and me smiling.
“I’ll let you keep that for now. Only because everything is perfect right now.” He said. I posted the picture on Instagram. The first thing I’ve ever posted.
An impending question popped up in my head. It’s gonna hurt me so much when I ask Ben.
“Ben?” I said. He could tell by my demeanor that it’s something serious. So he put his drink down and gave me his full attention.
“Yeah, Mase?” He said.
“When are you leaving?” I asked. His face became a bit sadder.
“In three weeks.” He said. That’s all I have left. Three weeks to be with him. And he’ll go back to his normal rich life while I stay here and try to heal from losing him. But I’m being selfish. I’m completely forgetting that Ben will also have to suffer from our distance.
“Do you have to go?” I asked, hoping maybe he could stay longer.
“Sadly. I have duties back home. Important ones. I can’t just stay here, Mase. I’m sorry.” I said. He put his hand on mine and rubbed my fingers.
“Are we done after you leave?” I asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t want to end this.”
“I just- You’re the first person I’ve ever liked, Ben. I don’t want to lose you.” I said. Just as Ben was about to speak. The sound of cars and helicopters surrounded us.
We all turned our heads and saw a tall man walk out of a rather expensive car. Ben’s face dropped and became pale as a ghost.
“Fuck!” He muttered. The man’s eyes were on Ben. They were filled with anger.
Using past memories, I remembered about where I’ve seen this man before. I know because our history teacher had a huge poster of him in class that I sat next to. She would always say that he was his crush and wanted to marry him.
It’s King Benjamin VII of Artois!
Hold up! Why does he kinda look like Ben?
I turned to Ben. I’m guessing he’s starting to see that I’m beginning to connect the dots.
Another man hopped out of the car and followed Ben. Then a whole guard walked around King Benjamin. News reporters were out. People had guns and fucking swords ready!
“PRINCE BENJAMIN!” The King yelled.
So Ben’s full name is Benjamin.
And he looks like the king.
And the French accent.
His money.
His “duties” he has.
Why couldn’t I see it earlier!?
He’s a fucking prince.
Prince Benjamin!
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 16
Ben’s POV
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK! What am I supposed to do!? My fucking father is here! I thought I could’ve had at least a week! I was counting on that week to make the most time with Mase! But I can’t anymore! Because my fucking father is here!!
“Ben?” A soft voice called. I turned and saw Mase looking at me. Judging by his face, I’m guessing he’s figured out my secret.
“Listen. Mase. I can explain.” I said but Mase let go of my hand. He was in utter disbelief.
“Why didn’t you tell me! Why would you keep this from me?!” He said out loud. His voice was cracked. Everyone was now looking at me. Carol, Dylan, Carl, and everyone else had a look of shock.
I can’t hide anymore. “Because everyone always treated me like royalty. I just needed to be somewhere where people didn’t know who I was.” I said.
“So this is your duty?” He asked. I nodded in humiliation. Truth is, I never knew if I wanted Mase to know about my status. I wanted to tell him so badly before I left but also I should’ve just left and he maybe would’ve found out on his own.
“BENJAMIN!” Father yelled. He walked up to our table. I stood up and bowed to him. Everyone followed what I did and bowed too. I shook the entire time. No one can miss the furious glow in his eyes. Father’s blue eyes might as well have been red.
“King Benjamin.” I said. Father always told me to refer to him as King and never as father or dad.
Instead of saying anything, father grabbed me by the arm and began dragging me away. “Get your ass in the car now!” He sternly said. I turned to Mase. He was following me for a bit before he stopped.
“Wait!” I yelled. Father didn’t let go and continued walking. I tried to pry his fingers off but he’s stronger than me. And that’s saying something. The man who grew up carrying boulders on his back to build homes for orphans.
“Not now, Benjamin! The whole world has been looking for you!” He dragged me until we reached the car.
“Father!” I yelled, finally calling him that. “Please! Just give me a damn minute! Then you can take me forever!” I pleaded. I’m guessing he saw how desperate I was. So he let me go.
I immediately ran to Mase. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I swear! That’s the only thing I lied about! But everything else, me loving you and wishing to stay, it’s all true Mase!” I sobbed a bit. Mase let some of his tears out.
“I don’t want you to leave, Ben. But you have to.” He tearfully grabbed my hands. I bet the press is loving this. Royal monarch falls for a small-town American boy.
“The past few weeks have been the best, Mase. And I couldn’t thank you enough for giving me so much.”
“Will I ever see you again?” Mase asked. I kissed his hands and cried. I let the tears out. I couldn’t be strong enough to hold them.
“I don’t know. And that scares me.”
“BENJAMIN!” Father yelled. I turned and saw him giving me a nasty look.
“What do I do about your stuff?” He asked.
“Well, the guards might come pick them up. But if not, keep them. Something to remember me by.” I said.
Mase lunged forward and caged his arms around my body. I hugged him back and we both stayed like that and wished we could stay like that. I felt Mase’s tears hit the back of my shirt.
Carol and the others watched close. This has to be a shock for them all. They hung out with a prince for weeks and never noticed anything.
“I have to go, Mason.” I said. We pulled apart. I put my hands on his head and adjusted the flower crown.
“I love you, Ben. You changed my life for the better.” He said.
“I love you too, Mason Howard. I won’t forget you.” He kissed me deeply. Something about a final kiss just tops every other kiss.
“Goodbye, Ben.” He said tearfully.
“Goodbye, Mason.” I stared into his amber eyes before I turned and walked shamefully to the limo. Father grunted and got in the car. I turned to Mase and gave one final wave before entering the car and driving off.
“50 countries, young man.” Father spoke. “That’s how many places we looked at to find you.” I didn’t say anything. I just cried and already missed Mase’s soft hands.
“You’re mother cried everyday. Katherine was obviously upset. The kingdom was worried for you. And here you were, sticking your tongue down some American’s throat.” Father spoke with disgust.
“He isn’t just some American.” I softly said.
“Who cares?!” He yelled. I jolted in my seat and scooted a bit away from him. “We’re going straight home and getting everything ready for your coronation!”
I should be upset at becoming king, but I’ve had my fun now. Unfortunately, that fun had a consequence, falling in love.
“How did you find me?” I asked.
Father pulled out his phone and showed me a screenshot. “Your American boyfriend posted this.” He said. There I saw the picture Mase took of me off guard. He was smiling into the camera while I had a weird expression.
God, I already miss his smile. We look so happy and now it’s gone to shit.
“I understand you like him-” Father said but I cut him off.
“I love him!” I snapped.
“I understand you love him, but you can’t marry someone who isn’t of royal blood. You know the rules.” Father said.
“Those rules were written centuries ago! Why are we still following them!” I snapped again. Sadly, I have to oblige them.
“After your coronation, we have some suitors lined up for you. We’ve got some ladies from Prussia, England, and one from Japan. We have a lot to do, I expect you to act like a king after having your fun.” Father spoke.
“I don’t want another suitor!”
“You have no choice! You lost that choice when you forced the pilot to fly you here, stole money from the reserve, and came to the US of all places!” Father’s vein on his forehead looked like it was soon to pop.
So I did something that I knew always calmed my dad, I shut up and said ‘Yes, your majesty.’.
The town went past me. This is a goodbye to Verona and Mase.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 17
Mason’s POV
He’s gone. He’s really gone. I knew this day was bound to happen. He told me from the first day that he’s just visiting and then leaving. However, I always imagined that maybe he would decide to stay. Or at least take me. I have nothing going in my life.
Ben made me want to live for something.
Once the black limo was out of sight, the attention was now on me. Carol quickly rushed over to me and let me cry on her shoulder.
The next few hours were a bit of a blur. The stress, heat, Ben leaving, the clamoring of reporters who wanted to know about me. It was all a blur.
What I do remember was reporters coming up to me and asking me if I knew Ben was a prince. Cameras flashed left and right, everyone catching a picture of a crying boy with a flower crown on his head.
For fuck’s sake! The love of my life is gone and all these people care about is getting a good headline.
The guards that came with King Benjamin mostly left but some stayed behind and escorted me into a car. Before I got in, I hugged Carol and cried before I was taken home.
Mom hugged me tightly when I reached home. She took me inside and let me watch a movie and cry my eyes out while she cooked a comfort meal for me. My phone had been blowing up with messages. Some said ‘Did you know he was a prince?’, ‘I bet you were using him for money.’, ‘Great, we have a fag king now.’
That last comment made me realize that my post, the only thing I’ve ever posted, was now known by the media. I checked the post. Already thousands of likes. I never wanted this. Instead of deleting the post, I archived it so while it’s gone, it’s not really gone.
Unlike Ben, who’s really gone.
I threw my phone away, not wanting to see it. I cried more. Mom walked around the house to clean and would occasionally pick up something from Ben.
“I can’t believe a prince lived here.” She would mumble to herself. I’m not sure if she knows that I was in love with Ben. She’s my mother. She probably knew before either Ben or I knew.
The TV switched from a show to the news.
“Earlier today, King Benjamin VII announced the rescue of his son Prince Benjamin. The royal family have announced the coronation of the new king for next month.” The news reporter said. I cried even more at the mention of Ben. I switched the channel quickly and landed on a gossip channel.
“Artois isn’t new the gay kings. Prince Benjamin may be the first of this century.” One of the speakers said. On screen was a picture taken earlier today of me and Ben kissing.
Now that he’s gone, I’m starting to notice more things about Ben. The way his blonde hair was pushed to behind his ears. The fact that his body is so proportionally perfect from his pecks to his legs. And the small beauty mark on his upper cheek bone.
“I don’t see why the other boy is crying. Prince Benjamin will forget about him in a few weeks when he’s finally king.” A guy with greasy hair and obviously hasn’t showered said.
Who is he to demean my love! If I remember correctly, this guy wasn’t around during the weeks Ben was here. Anyone who dares say our love isn’t anything wasn’t here when Ben went out into the rain and carried me inside! They weren’t here when Ben spilled soda on me and gave me his jacket! They weren’t here when I carried a drunk Ben home!
“Honey,” Mom spoke in her soft voice. I’m guessing I’d been non-stop crying so she turned off the TV. “Come on, sweetie. Let’s go eat.” She said. Mom removed my flower crown that I hadn’t taken off and put it on the coffee table.
My body moved on auto pilot. I got up and sat at the table. Normally, I would’ve sat in the chair next to the kitchen because I get up a lot and drink too much water. But that’s where Ben sat everyday. I couldn’t sit there. That’s his seat now.
“Mase, it’ll be okay. I promise.” Mom said. She placed a bowl in front of me. I stared into the food for a while until my stomach growled. I had to eat.
“I’m sorry mom.” I cried. Mom placed my head on her shoulder and let me cry. “I should’ve told you I like him.”
“Mason. From the moment Ben walked in here, I automatically assumed he was your boyfriend. I knew already since you were a kid that you were different from the other boys.” She hugged me.
“That’s why dad left. I wasn’t a real boy.” I cried.
“Don’t say that, Mason! Your father can go to hell! His meaning of a man is different from mine.” She held up my face and made me look at her. “You’re a real man because you weren’t afraid to show who you love to the world. Your father would’ve never done that and would’ve cowered away.” She kissed my forehead.
“Thanks mom. I love you.” I kissed her cheek.
“You too, Mason. Now eat your food. I still have to clean up.” Mom got up and began to walk around. She picked up the bags of snacks on the counter that Ben and I ate yesterday. My eyes turned to the pink magnolias I had gotten from Ben.
I’ll look into it on how to turn cuts of plants into a full tree. I want to plant those magnolias in our backyard before they wilt. Something to remember Ben by.
The food was gone. Losing someone you love can really make you hungry. Normally when I have nothing to do, I would’ve gone to Ben and we would’ve gone outside and gone on walks or went out with friends. Ben was gone. And I don’t feel like talking to anyone.
I grabbed the flower crown and made my way to my room. I had to pass by Ben’s room. It’s his room still. I can still hear the inaudible mumbles of him talking to his sister. The night when we played music and danced in his room. The sound of us laughing after Ben woke up hungover.
I laid in my bed and looked outside to the shining sun. I then turned to the jacket Ben had given me at the cinema. I grabbed it and hugged it close to my boy.
And the most tears came out. I wailed for him. If he heard my cries, I bet he would come back here and tell me he’s never going to leave.
I miss Ben. I grew attached to him. Before I met Carol, no one wanted to be friends with me. My dad’s words spread and everyone saw me as a weak person. Despite being 5’11 and taller than most boys, I still feel smaller than everyone.
But Ben put me on a pedestal. He always praised me and loved to talk about how beautiful I am. I gained confidence from him.
Now I’m back to how I was years ago. Crying in my room because I’m alone once again.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 18
Ben’s POV
“Your Majesty, you have a meeting with Magnoline next week.” My royal advisor told me. I nodded in confirmation. “Also you’re scheduled for a public appearance later today, sir.” I nodded and dismissed him from the throne room.
“Ben, sit up straight!” Father told me from the side. Mom and Katherine were there too watching me. “You’re a king now! At least pretend to care!” I rolled my eyes and chose to ignore my father. He has no rule over me anymore. Because I’m king now.
After returning to Artois, the festivities began. It first started with a week-long harvest festival. Then a day of history to remember the past kings. And then a two day silent period for mourning for the first king’s lover. And then the final day would be the coronation.
World leaders from around the world are invited to watch me become king. Our citizens would then have access to our wine reserves where parties lasted for several days. And I and my family would be in the castle drinking away while father showed me my future suitors.
And during all this time, there was only one thing on my mind. The person who was in the back of my mind, watching. All I could think about was him, wondering how he’s doing ever since I left.
Mason Howard. Mase. My love.
Every night, I cried in my bed. I thought about everything Mase and I did. The only thing I have left of him is the pictures I took. Father is insistent on wedding me off. I don’t even think I want to live if Mase isn’t here.
“Benny, it’s time to go.” Kat said. I had finished putting anti-inflammatory cream under my eyes so it didn’t look like I was crying. “I know you miss him, Ben. But it’s time to move on.” Kat said.
I snapped. “I’m not fucking moving on! I love Mason! Don’t tell me to forget about him!” I caught my breath while Kat looked at me with shocked eyes. I’ve never yelled at her before. “Sorry, Kat.” I mumbled. Kat stood next to me and adjusted my badges.
“No, I’m sorry. I know you love Mase. I can’t imagine what it must be like to leave someone like that.” Kat adjusted my crown on my head.
“I miss him. I really do.” I tried hard not to cry. Kat hugged me and patted my back.
“It’s going to be okay.” Is all she said. Part of me believed it but I knew it’s a lie.
I got inside the limo and drove to the capital center, where people will be there to greet me. Father told me that I have to accept the gifts and instructed me on how to properly greet people.
I was let out of the car and faced with flashes of lights and cheers from everyone. The whole area really began to make my head spin. Every place I looked, there was someone there to cheer for me. But I sucked it up. If I’m gonna be king, I have to get used to this.
‘When are you going to marry a princess?’ Someone asked.
I honestly have no idea how to respond to that. I keep being resilient to my father and telling him I don’t want a match.
When I reached the Edward Center, I bent down to a little girl who was looking up at me. I saw she was holding something in her hand so I went down until I was eye to eye with her. She couldn’t have been more than 10 years old.
“Hi, Benjamin!” The little girl said. She didn’t address me as King Benjamin. Honestly, I want my people to refer to me as Ben or Benjamin. Not as King.
“Hi there. What’s your name?” I asked. The little girl’s mother nodded at her to respond.
“Cecile. Mama calls me Cece.” She responded. “I got you this.” She held up a flower crown. The sight of the crown reminded me of the one I made for Mase. The one I put on him and called him my king before I was taken.
“Thank you, Cece. It’s really pretty.” I said. I patted her head and put the flower crown on over gold one before I stood up. She whispered something in my ear.
“Are you going to marry him?” She asked. I was taken aback. There’s only one him in my life.
“Who?” I asked.
“The boy you were with in America. Are you going to marry him?”
“I want to.” I responded she looked me dead in the eyes.
“Then why not?” She asked. “You love him. Shouldn’t that be enough?”
I ruffled the girl’s hair and chuckled. “It’s a bit complicated. I guess I’ll see how life goes.” I stood up and she waved goodbye. This girl just mind-screwed with me.
The whole day was full of more flowers and greetings. I had my picture taken at every angle.
Later that night, after finishing some negotiations, I entered mom and father’s room.
“What’s wrong, Ben. What do you need?” Mom asked. She got off the bed and came to me. Father walked out the bathroom and was surprised to see me in their room.
“I-” How do I say this? How do I tell my parents I’m in love with an American? “I need to tell you guys something.” I said. I could tell my father was a bit uncomfortable since Kat and I never opened up to him or mom about ourselves. We’ve mainly kept everything to ourselves.
“Take your time, Ben. We’re here to listen.” Mom rubbed my back and sat me on the bed. I broke down crying. Mom rubbed my back while I’m guessing father began to piece together what this conversation may be about. Sometimes when I’m sad and looking at pictures of me and Mase, I could see my father watching my distress.
“I’m in love with Mason!” I sobbed.
“That boy from the US?” Mom asked. I nodded my head. “I’m sorry, Ben. But we can’t do anything about that.”
“Bullshit, mom!” I said loudly. Mom jumped back and father raised an eyebrow.
“Watch your tone, Benjamin!” Father yelled.
“Please! Just let me date Mason! That’s all I want. I love him and I can’t imagine losing him!” I pleaded.
“Mason. I wish we could, but can you imagine what the world would say if you dated not only a commoner, but a foreigner?”
“If I recall, we rule over Artois, not the world! Who cares what they think?! I love Mason!” Mom looked over at father. “Remember you and father!? Father was going to marry the Duchess of Sweden but he fell in love with you! But grandpa didn’t approve of you being from the Baltics!” Mom was thinking.
“That was different, Mason. You know that.” Mom responded. Father stood back and decided to just watch me.
“It’s not! It’s the same thing! I love Mason Howard. And I want to be with him!” I kneeled in front of my mom and pleaded. “Please, mom.” I cried. Mom turned to father and they had a conversation with their eyes.
“Is he the one?” Father asked.
“He is. I know he is!” Mom and father then stood next to each and whispered to each other.
“Ben.” Mom said. I turned to look up at them. I stood up and waited for their answer.
Father decided to speak up. “If you insist, we’ll allow you to visit the US and see Mason.” Father said. Fireworks popped in my head. It’s a celebration all over.
I sobbed and broke down. “Thank you! Thank you so much!” The two smiled at each other. “I’ll never disobey you guys again!” I cried.
“We’ll have to discuss the details further. And you’ll have to talk to Mason if he wants to consider possibly moving here.” Father spoke.
“And you’ll need to inform him of being in the public eye. The moment we announce your relationship, people will want to ask him for every bit of information.” Mom added.
“It’s going to be a tough few months. But this is what you want. And we’ll stand by your decision, King Benjamin.” Father said. I hugged them both tightly.
“I love you guys so much!” I cried. I pulled away from them. “When can I go?!” I was jumping at this point.
“We’ll get everything set for tomorrow.” Mom kissed father’s cheek. Father blushed, not expecting mom to kiss him in front of me. Despite father’s stern attitude, mom is the only one who can control him.
Their relationship is something I want.
To Mason Howard, I’m coming, my love. I’ll see you soon and you’ll be in my arms again. I just hope you didn’t forget about me and move on, because I didn’t.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 19
Mason’s POV
I’ve yet to recover from the past incident, for it may be something I’ll never heal from. I’ve never loved anyone the way I have Ben. I know familial love for my mom. Friendly love for Carol. But never love love . Until Ben’s sexy-ass bumped into me while I was downtown.
Now I’m left broken. Why didn’t Ben tell me who he was? It’s not like I would’ve treated him differently. But it was never my business to know.
I don’t plan on going to college. I never did. I always felt like it wasn’t my cup of tea. I had a talk with mom a few months ago. She agreed with my decision but I had to get a job at some point.
Within the weeks that Ben left, I’ve been getting texts left and right from people asking if it’s true. People from my old class are texting me saying that they always knew I was fruity. Some have tried to rekindle a friendship. Crazy how I was always ignored at school and now they want to know me.
I tried to get a job but everyday people would come in; news reporters, paparazzi, journalists, you name it. It got so bad they showed up at our house several times to ask for my side.
I don’t have a side. Everything that was in that picture of Ben and I kissing says everything needed to be known. That I, Mason Howard, am sadly in love with Prince- well, now King Benjamin VIII.
Mom tried to get me to watch Ben’s coronation. It was airing everywhere. But I couldn’t watch it. Every time I saw Ben in his gown and a crown on his head, I saw a normal looking boy. A boy who gave me his jacket. Saved me from drowning. Saved me from the rain.
And saved me from loneliness.
The discussion of Ben’s future wife was talked about a lot. I checked some conversations of people assuming he would marry a woman of royalty. And then some mentioned me. They’d wondered if Ben would marry a guy, a commoner.
Trying not to care was the hardest thing. No matter what, I seem to break down crying 24/7. To the point where mom was concerned of my well being and mental health. Every night I slept with his jacket next to me. It still had his scent. And the flower crown I’ve been learning to grow them again.
And now I’m in bed for the fifth time today crying.
“Mase! Come down here!” Mom called out. She knows not to call me because I’m busy crying so this must be urgent.
I got out of bed and began to walk down the stairs. I stumbled all the way down. Dehydration is no joke.
“Mmm. What mom?” I rubbed my eyes before opening them only to be met with a cardboard cutout of Ben. He was standing there smiling at me.
I thought it must’ve been some cruel joke. At least they got the height right. And he isn’t wearing his royal attire. Just normal clothes, exactly how I remembered him. This is a really good cutout. But it still isn’t Ben himself.
Oh
When I knew it was actually Ben, the real Ben, I ran to him and gave him the tightest hug and cried into his shoulder.
“Mase!” He said. He rubbed my back while I cried into his. I pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Then I bit Ben’s shoulder. “OW! Why’d you do that!!” We pulled apart while he laughed and rubbed his shoulder.
“I had to make sure you were real.” I sobbed. Ben pulled my neck up and planted a kiss. His kisses are perfect. I have nothing to compare them to. But I know they’re perfect.
“Does that prove I’m real?” He asked. I simply just gave him another hug. I can’t believe it. He’s here. In the flesh. I thought he was never going to see me but here he is. It doesn’t matter why he’s here. As long as I get a few more minutes with him.
“Why are you here?” I asked. Ben nodded to my mom. She had the biggest smile on her face. I’m guessing she was in on this. Ben held my hands and we sat on the couch. It was as if a storm that raged thunder had me backed into a dark corner of my mind and Ben came to chase away all my demons and lead me to a peace of mind.
I simply couldn’t stop touching his hand. God, I missed him so much.
“I’m here because I love you, Mase.” He said.
“I love you too, Ben! I missed you so much!” I cried out, holding his hands tighter.
“I came here because I love you. And I want you to be with me, Mase.” He said.
“Wait, you want me to move to Europe?” I asked. I don’t have anything against Europe, but it’s a long way from Minnesota.
“Yeah! I simply can’t be away from you. I know you’re the one. I already talked to mom and father and they’ve agreed to let me be with you.” He told me eagerly. He wants this as much as I do.
“I don’t know, Ben. What about mom? I can’t leave her.” I said. Mom stood by and watched all of this.
“Your mom can come visit us whenever she wants. And you can visit her. Or if she wants, she can move to Artois. We’ll give you two everything you need. All you have to do is say yes.” He explained.
I thought for a moment about it. If I agree to go to Artois with Ben, I get to be with him. That in itself would make me want to move. But I can’t leave mom. She’s all that I have.
“Mason, baby.” Mom said. She bent down in front of me and pushed her hair back. “It’s okay, baby. I’ll be fine. I’ll visit you every chance I get. And I might move there.” She had tears in her eyes. She knows how much I love Ben. She’s willing to give me up for me to be happy. “Do what makes you happy.” She said.
So you’re probably wondering what decision I made.
Well I wouldn’t be here packing my bags if I said no. I spent a week in Verona before I left just to say goodbye to as much as I could. I said bye to the school I went to, the diner where I would eat alone. The area behind the park fountain where I would spend all day crying after dad insulted me.
“I can’t believe you landed an actual King! This is so unfair!” Carol said. I hugged her tight.
“Thank you for giving me a chance, Carol. I probably wouldn’t be here if you didn’t help me.” I said. Carol sighed and hugged me back.
“Hey, Mase.” She smirked at using my nickname. “Just as long as you visit us once in a while. And you better set me up with a royal person!” She said. We pulled away. I’ve never seen Carol cry. But today she was.
“I will, Carol. I’ll find the best prince for you.” I said. I picked up my bag and put it in the car.
“Well this is goodbye, Mase. If there’s a wedding, I hope to be invited.” She said.
“You’ll be my groomswoman. Goodbye, Carol.” I said.
“Bye, Mase! I’ll miss you!” She yelled, her red hair swaying in the wind. I’m gonna miss her red hair and call her Ariel or Pippi Longstockings. I got into the car and turned to look at her as the car drove away. She waved goodbye as tears fell from both of us.
Mom decided to come with us for a week just to see if the country is good enough for me.
“I have so much planned for us, Mase. Museums, art shows, parades, and so much food!” Ben said. He had a look of eagerness that anyone can see. During the past few weeks, his face was blank. He tried to look happy but I never saw true happiness. But now I do.
Now we’re on our way to Artois. Where I can be with Ben finally. The love of my life.
bye! i love you all!

Chapter 20
Mason’s POV
The farthest I’ve gone outside of Verona was all the way to Minneapolis. And now I’m here in Europe, halfway across the world. And right now I’m in Ben’s room looking around everything he has. Ben isn’t home right now. He’s doing king things.
I heard him whispering last night that soon king problems will be my problems too. Whatever that means…
I’ve lived in the castle for a long time already. I’m used to how the day works. Ben gets up, let’s me sleep in for a while. We shower together and go eat breakfast. He does his duties that he was dreading when he came to Verona. He’s actually a really good king and I tell him everyday. Then he takes a break mid-day and we walk in his gardens.
He was right, the flowers here are much prettier.
He goes back to work. He comes back and we eat dinner. I spend a lot of my time with his sister Katherine. She’s one of the only people who can deal with Ben, besides me and his parents. She tells me stories of her and Ben as children.
I’ve also started calling her gremlin. And she called me brother.
So… there’s that.
Back in Verona, my mother has enjoyed a nice life. We call everyday. Though, when she came to visit us in Artois, I caught her making out with one of the royal guards. Honestly, that guard is a nice guy, better man than my bio-father.
And recently, I’ve noticed Ben has been putting certain responsibilities on me such as planning events and organizing field trips for the kids of his town. I did some digging in the archieves and found out that the married individuals of the royal monarch have to do things that involve the public.
It was a long day. I felt tired and numb. I had been busy at the town center helping to build a new shop for the people.
Ben walked in and saw me laying down. “Let me go get fixed and I’ll be right back. Wait for me?” He asked.
“You know I always will.” I responded. I waited in bed until Ben came out wearing a tank top that showed off his beautiful body. Instead of coming to bed and laying down, he went to a gramophone (Yes he has one in his room) and turned it on.
A small crackle was heard before a song started playing. It was Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 27: III. Adagio. I know it specifically because it’s the song that is always playing in the ballroom. Ben says it was the song his parents and grandparents and great-grandparents danced to on their wedding night.
The song played in small notes that traveled to every corner of the room. No item or being was invisible to the romantic notes.
Ben walked over to where I was laying and stuck his right hand out to me. “Dance with me.” Is all he said, but his eyes said more.
I took his hand and got off the bed. He held me like I was porcelain to the center of our room. He placed my hand on his shoulder and grabbed my other hand in his. His left hand was on my waist.
As the music progressed, we took small steps. He moved like he knew what to do. I stumbled every few steps and every time I felt like I was about to fall, he would catch me and say ‘Don’t worry, love. I’ll always catch you.’
He spun me and tiled me back and caught me. His blonde hair fell over his face and looked down at me. He kissed me while my back was arched. I was going to fall. I know it! But I’m not. Because he said he’ll always catch me.
He pulled me up and hugged me close to him. We didn’t dance, we didn’t talk. We just swayed with the music.
“Before I met you, I was in a dark place.” I said. Ben snuggled into my hair. “I had nothing going in my life. I felt that I would fall too far and never get up. I was in the darkness.” I looked up at him. “But you came into my life. You took me by the hand and led me out of that darkness. You lit the way for me and never turned back. I found what I’ve been looking for but couldn’t see it.”
“I’ll always be by your side. In sickness and in health.” He said.
“It sounds like a wedding.” I chuckled.
“You know, you’re a shit dancer.” He said.
“What- Give me a break! I’ve never been asked to dance before by anyone else!”
“Well you better learn how to for our wedding night.” He responded. I stopped breathing before I looked at Ben’s eyes. He knew what he said. It wasn’t a slip up.
“What?” I was flabbergasted.
“Mason Howard,” He said. He got down on one knee in front of me. The man then pulled out a ring from his pocket and held it out. It was huge. And shiny. And in the shape of a flower.
“I didn’t expect to find love when I went to Verona. I should’ve known the name of the city the same as Romeo and Juliet’s would’ve had something romantic for me. Truth is, I didn’t want to fall in love with you. But I did. And it’s the best thing to ever happen to me. You brought a gift to me that I haven’t found before. You brought me love. Joy. Something that makes me want to be a better person. You’re the last piece in the puzzle of my life. And there’s no one else I want to be with.
“So… Mason Howard, will you do me the honor of marrying me?”
I stared down at him as tears left my eyes. I broke down crying. By this point, the music has ended. But the music of our lives is just starting.
“YES! I’LL MARRY YOU!” I said. He stood up and hugged me so tight and lifted me up from the ground.
“This is going to be the beginning of our lives! You’re the one I want to be with!” He said. He slid the ring on my finger.
“So what’s my title now?” I jokingly asked.
“Here, it’s different. Even if you aren’t of royal blood, the spouse of the monarch is given the proper title. Which means that now, you’re officially…”
“King Mason the First.” I responded.
A year ago, I was sulking around with no plans for my future. Just a plastic bag drifting through the wind. Going wherever the tide takes me.
And now, I’m a king. And a husband. To another king!
Life couldn’t be better.
“Can we sneak out? I wanna go outside with you.” I said.
“Anything for you, King Mason.” He said. He kissed me as we put on our shoes and slipped outside our room.
We walked down the halls, careful to make sure that no one heard us.
But Ben accidentally bumped into an armor stand that clashed and made a loud noise. The door to our left opened and out walked Ben’s mom and dad. I guess my mom and dad too.
“RUN!” Ben said. He began sprinting down the hall on his way to the garden.
“GUARDS! We have a runaway king!” Mom yelled. She looked at me, while I was still standing there. Her eyes traveled down to my hand where the shiny ring was obvious. Their eyes widened. I sprinted out of there and followed behind Ben before his father yelled out.
“Make that two runaway kings!”
