I saw him when I went to check out a book my friend recommended to me.

It’s a simple small library located in a busy part of town. Sandwiched between ‘Lotta Latte’ a cafe, and a tech company called ‘GavGadgets’. Anyone could’ve missed the three story, Victorian brick, atrophy building.

I entered and looked around for the aisle. I decided not to ask for help because I’m looking for a simple book and don’t want to bother the employees.

The library was kinda empty. It wasn’t until I reached the upper floors where there were more people. The upper floors have larger windows, lounge areas, and even older books.

I saw a guy reading a Latin book. Upon further notice, I came to the conclusion he was only here to look hip and different.

Reaching the third floor, I was exhausted. I saw a sign saying ‘Classic Literature’. I entered the hallway with shelves and looked for the book.

Frankenstein, no. The Odyssey, no. The Great Gatsby, no.

I searched and searched until I found it.

‘Discipline of Modern Education’ by Sigmund Auburn.

I went to pull the book out of the shelf. As I did, a small opening was created. Through the other side, I was met with a handsome fellow.

He looked at me with deep dark eyes. His dark circles under his eyes made him look mysterious. And he had shaggy black hair falling down his face. His facial expression showed absolute no care for his job and the world.

“Take a picture, why don’t you.” He spat out. I looked away and crouched down so he wouldn’t see me.

I waited for a while and then got up and raced down the aisle to check out the book.

As I turned the corner, I bumped into him again. I fell on my ass and grunted.

“Watch where you’re going!” He spat and turned around and walked down the stairs, leaving me on the floor with a painful ass.

discipline of modern education is not a real book btw.  ;)

I sucked it up and got up. Either this man was having a crappy day or is a crappy person in general. Either way, his attitude led to me falling on the floor.

I got up and began descending the stairs. I reached the checkout line and saw none other than the sexy guy from earlier.

“Just this?” He asked.

“No, I also want to take that decorative succulent, please.” I rolled my eyes.

“Do you want to join the membership club?” He asked, completely ignoring my sassy remark.

“Is it free?” I asked. He shrugged.

“Yeah.” Is all he said.

“Sure.” I responded. He made me fill out a form to the side while he attended to other people. I handed him my application and he took it and then pulled out a camera.

“Smile.” He said out of nowhere and took my picture.

“Wait a minute! I wasn’t ready!” I pleaded. He ignored me and the small printer began to print a library card.

He chuckled deeply, covering his lips as he looked at my card. I snatched it and looked at the picture. It was my face but I was caught off guard so I was looking at the left instead of the camera. And my hair was a bit messy.

“Can I retake it?” I asked.

“Nah. Here you go, Easton.” He said and handed my book. “Return it in a few days. Or never. Whatever you want.” He then turned and walked away.

I walked out the store, flustered that I met such a sexy guy but an asshole. I didn’t even do anything to him. Just admired him and crashed into him.

I’m getting that succulent.

I read the book. 1/10. Not good. Just talked about selecting the smartest people and forcing them to breed to create a smarter society and excluding everyone else. Honestly, when I heard that it was used as the principle for some academies, I wanted to burn it.

Now I am back at the library to return the book. Part of me hoped he wouldn’t be here but the other hoped he was.

I entered and today was a bit emptier than when I first came.

“Oh, you’re back.” Someone said in an obvious banal and monotonous tone. He was there at the counter playing with his rings on his finger.

“I’m here to return this.” I set the book on the counter.

“Card.” He held a scanner. I gave it to him, to which he chuckled at my picture. “How would you rate this book on the scale of 1-10?” He asked.

“1” I said.

“Yeah, it’s pretty bad. A bit barbaric in my opinion.”

“Exactly! It was so bad.” I replied.

“Planning on checking out another book?” He asked. I looked up at the balconies inside the building which allowed for people at the top to look down.

“I’ll look around.” I began to leave the counter and entered the second floor. I remember seeing some nice labels here.

I silently looked around at the shelves. There were some books that looked interesting.

“Need any help.” Guy asked out of nowhere behind me, kinda making me jump.

“Go away.” I replied. Can this guy be anymore annoying?

“I’ll be here if you need me.” He leaned against the shelf, crossing his muscular arms over his chest and watching me. “I have nothing better to do.” He said.

“Fine, I guess I could use some help.” He smiled a bit and got closer to me. Too close.

“Want to read something long and useless?” He asked me. “How about the Bible?” He asked, holding up the book which so happened to be interpolated and satirically placed in the fiction section.

“Are you going to help me or just annoy me?” I asked.

“Why not both?” He shrugged. “You’re very mean.” He pouted.

“And you’re very annoying.” I clapped back. I rounded the corner with him following me. The titles here were weird. And some had covers of very revealing people.

“Ah, I see you’ve entered our sexy literature section.” He smirked at the covers.

“This is so weird.” I held up a book with a woman in a blindfold.

“Imagine how it is when I have to put these away.” He said. “And the look on peoples faces when they check them out. Hilarious.”

“Okay, I’ve had enough of this!” I said and walked out that section after seeing a cover with a guy in bondage on the cover. Guy behind me laughed as I walked up to the third floor.

“Can you hurry up?” He said, looking down at his watch.

“Are you closing soon?” I asked.

“No, this is just getting boring.” He said. I huffed and just grabbed a random book.

We walked down the stairs and back to the counter. He checked out the book and handed it to me.

“I never got your name.” I said.

“Hendrix.” He replied.

“Nice to meet you, Hendrix.” I tried to be civil.

“If you don’t just take the damn book.” He said. I flipped him off and laughed as I walked out the library.

Hendrix. It’s a nice name.

I ended up getting Macbeth which was a good read. I returned to the library again after three days.

“You know there’s more libraries out there, right?” Hendrix said when I walked in.

“First of all, most are shut down because of lack of funding, and second, I like bothering you.”

“How was Macbeth?” He asked. I handed the book over.

“Good.” I replied.

“Nerd.” He said under his breath. “Of course you would like it.” He said.

“Listen buddy!” I said. “I’m the literal paragon in my family. I graduated top of my class! And what are you?” I asked.

“The guy who annoys the paragon.” He snarked back. I ignored him and walked to the third floor. I like being up here because I get to see everyone below me as if I was God.

I looked for another book and found a book I wanted but I was on the high shelf. I reached up to grab it but my 5’10 height was too short. Who even designed these shelves?

“Oh this is adorable.” Hendrix said behind me.

“Help me, jackass!” I grunted. Hendrix stood right behind me, reached up, and got the book easily. I blushed stupidly and took the book.

“Thanks.” I mumbled.

“What’s that?” He asked.

“I said thanks.” I said a bit louder. “Just let me check this out.” I said

“See you soon!” He said as I exited the library.

Something about Hendrix just plucks my strings. Like, even though he’s annoying, I can’t stop thinking about him. Today was the closest we’ve had to physical contact.

I’ll definitely be coming back.

No surprise I’m coming back. I read the book. Actually, no I didn’t. I left it on my desk and just waited a few days to come back.

“How was the book?” He asked

“Uhhh, five?” I said.

“You didn’t read it.” He blatantly said.

“How’d you know?” I asked, surprised.

“Cause there’s no folds in the bookmark I left in here.” He said.

“Fine. I didn’t read it.”

“So are you here to see me again?” He leaned onto the counter, looking deep into my eyes.

“As if! Can I just look around today?” I asked.

“Go on.” I left him there and turned to look at the first floor.

I slapped my head because of an oncoming migraine. I got a book which was delineated to turn you on. My migraine began to hurt more. I clasped the shelf and began to fall down.

“Hang on, Easton.” Hendrix said. He helped me up and stood me leaning on him. “You okay?” He asked.

“Bitch I almost collapsed.” I replied groggily.

“What did you eat for breakfast?” He asked.

“Does water count?” I asked. He sighed.

“Follow me.” He said. I didn’t follow him because he was dragging me instead.

“HE’S KIDNAPPING ME!” I said loudly as we walked to the backroom.

“Shut up!” Hendrix said. He turned to everyone and smiled at them.

“My bad.” I giggled.

“Can you try to not be loud?” He said. I sighed out a no.

“Sit, I’ll get you something you eat and some pills.” He said. He returned with a sandwich.

“Does this have gluten?” I asked. “I can’t eat it.” I said. He sighed and took the plate away. He returned with a fruit salad.

“That’s all I got.” He said. He sat in front of me as I ate the fruit.

“Don’t you have customers?” I asked.

“Everyone there is busy taking Insta picks to show how chic they are. I’ve got plenty of time.”

“Want some fruit?” I asked.

“I’d like some banana.” He smirked.

“Psycho.” I responded.

“Riddle me this, Easton. Are you pedantic?” He asked. “Cause you look like the type.”

“No really. I’m fine with some chaos.”

“Cool.” He muttered. “Cool.” A smile came on his face. He’s chaos.

“I’m done.” I said. He handed me the pills and a bottle of water. “Thanks for this, by the way. I could’ve died.” I said.

“Make sure you eat next time. There’s literally a cafe next door.” He said.

“Maybe you could take me.” I said. For the first time, I saw this man blush. Gotcha!

“I don’t date idiots.” He said.

“Lucky for you, I’m not an idiot.”

“You sure about that?” He said after I accidentally threw the metal spoon in the trash and put the styrofoam bowl in the sink.

“I’ll get it out.” I said. Hendrix was just laughing at me the entire time.

I guess I am an idiot.

I returned the following day. I ate breakfast this time.

“Catch.” Hendrix said, throwing me an apple.

“Were you waiting for me by the door?” I asked.

“Who knows when you’ll collapse again.”

“Well I ate so…”

“Just keep the damn apple!”

I walked into the library and sat at the lounge bar. I rested my head on the table. I breathed in and out.

“You okay?” Hendrix sat in front of me.

“Just need a place to relax.” I responded.

“I give great massages.” He rubbed his hands together.

“Why not.” I said. Hendrix got up and got behind me (not that way). He brought his hands onto my back and massaged his fingers and palms in my balls of stress.

“Ohhh fuck!” I moaned. “That feels so fucking good.”

“Yeah, you like that?” He massaged even deeper.

“Mmmm. Just like that. Oh!” I moaned out.

“Are you two fucking?” A voice from the aisle said. I blushed and Hendrix stopped.

“Mary, I’m giving him a massage.” He responded to the voice.

“Carry on, then.” She laughed out loud.

“Should I continue?” He asked.

“Fuck yeah!” I said.

He brought his hands back to my back.

My face was smashing into the pillow. I gripped the sides and moaned loudly into the pillow.

“Oh! Oh! Oh fuck!” I moaned out. His hands kept touching me in that sweet spot that melted me. I hope he can keep going for hours.

“Damn I didn’t know my massages were that good.” He said behind me. His knuckles just obliterated me.

“Mmmm.” I said. And then I fell asleep on the table. Hendrix brought out a pillow he had for when he needed a nap and let me place my head on it. He’s been giving my a massage for the past hour until I passed out.

“Easton… Easton….” A voice was calling out to me.

“God?” I said.

“Even better.” The voice said.

“Andrew Garfield?” I replied. I opened my eyes to Hendrix sitting next to me patting my hair like a dog. I rubbed my eyes. “Oh, it’s you.” I said nonchalantly.

“In the flesh. You really passed out there.” He said.

“I guess your hands are just really good.” I sat up and almost collapsed from lack of iron. “How long have I been out?” I asked.

“It’s closing time.” I looked at the window. Sure enough, it was dark outside.

“Shit! I didn’t mean to make you stay after hours!” I picked up my sweater and walked to the door.

“For what it’s worth, I didn’t mind your presence.” He said. I turned to see him sitting on the table. “Even if you were asleep most of the time.” He smiled at me.

“Well uh, thanks for the massage. And letting me sleep.” I opened the door, the chime of the bell ringing.

“Yeah. Goodnight.” He looked like he was holding back.

“Goodnight, Hen.”

“Night, East.” I walked out to the night after having the best sleep in a while.

The bookstore opens at 10:00 am. So for the first time ever, I woke up early and put in effort to look good today. I headed to the cafe near the bookstore and got two coffees and two muffins, one gluten free of course.

I waited outside the bookstore until a silver sleek car pulled into the employees parking lot. Hendrix came out the car and stopped in his tracks when he saw me in front of the door.

“Couldn’t wait to see me again, huh?” He said. He reached the door and opened it. He closed it in my face. I huffed and tried opening the door but my hands were occupied. The entire time, Hendrix was watching me struggle.

“Help?” I said to him. He opened the door for me and let me in.

“Is that for me?” He asked. I set the food on the table and handed him his cup.

“Yep! I didn’t know what you liked so I got it with a bit of sugar and cream.”

“Perfect.” He sipped his coffee. I handed him the muffin and we sat at the table and ate.

“So….” I said. “Any family?” I asked.

“You could say that.” He said.

“Meaning what?”

“Grew up in the foster system. Never met my real parents. I sometimes imagine they’re dead so I can have a reason to not reach out. But it’s whatever.” He paused and sipped his coffee. “Met some good people, though.” He finished.

“Geeze. Well. I uh, had normal parents. I guess my life was banal. But not compared to yours.” I said, chuckling a bit awkwardly.

“But I turned out fine.” He said.

“You sure about that?” I snarked at him.

“I’ve got an hour before I have to open. Do you just wanna talk, get you know each other?” He asked.

“That would be fun.” I said. We got up and threw our trash away and walked through the bookshelves.

I once again saw the succulent I so badly want.

“Wait, you’re telling me that Nick had a crush on Gatsby?” He asked.

“Well… those are the theories. It just makes so much sense cause of how Nick talks about Gatsby. Trust me, dude.” I said. He just looked at the book and raised an eyebrow. He began to go through the shelves and turned away from me.

“Hey,” He said. I turned to him but he didn’t turn back. “Wanna go on a date?” He asked, completely throwing me off.

“A-A-A date?” I stuttered out. I just stood there, thinking I was dreaming.

“Yeah, why not? I’ve thought about it for a while now.” He picked up a book and put it back down.

“I thought I was annoying to you.”

“You are. But in a nice way. You make my boring day fun. I literally stare at the door just waiting for you to walk in.” He waited for my response.

“Then yes. I’ll go on a date with you.” I said. I breathed in relief. “Where?”

“This is gonna sound weird, but how bout here?” He asked. He finally turned around, awaiting my response.

“Sure. I mean, this is the place we met. Might as well.” I said.

“Okay, good. Umm, tonight? Are you free?” He asked me.

“Yes. I am.” I responded.

“Cool.” He said. Then he just got quiet and turned back around. It took me a moment to process that I was going on an actual date with this guy I just met.

“Oh my God.” I whispered to myself. That fact someone actually asked me out because they’re interested in me. I need to sit down for a moment. Drink some water.

“You look like you’re about to pass out.” Hendrix stood next to me and patted my back.

“I’m fine.” I said. I stood back up. “What time is our date?” I said. That word sounds so foreign to me.

“7 pm.” He said.

Tonight is my date with Hendrix. It’s like it’s been a moment that’s been building up for so long. The snide remarks. The occasional flirting. And the want to see him everyday. I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.

I buttoned up my shirt and styled my hair. It’s been so long since I’ve last been on a date. I’m a bit terrified I ain’t going to lie. I’m fearful that anything could go wrong. The worst fear? Hendrix doesn’t show up and it was all a prank.

Luckily, when I reached the bookstore, it was open. I entered and looked around. It was dark but the third floor emanated a bright glow. I climbed the stairs and was met with a simple table with candles and a very sexy Hendrix waiting next to me.

“Never took you to be a romantic.” I said.

“I’m not.” He looked away, blushing. “But you deserve this for putting up with me.” He said. He turned to a chair and pulled it out. I took the hint and sat down. He then sat in his own chair which faced me. I looked down onto our table and saw plates with a steel cloche over it.

“Voila!” Hen said when he pulled it off. It revealed a steak with asparagus and roasted potatoes.

“When did you have time to make this?” I asked while awing at the food.

“I’m pretty good at cooking. Hope I can cook for you more in the future.” He said.

“Easy, man. This is the first date.”

The entire time I talked with Hendrix. He opened up more and told me a lot of facts about him. Some of it was vague, but I got a sense of who he is and how his life kinda was. I opened up to him too, told him about my family, education, that one time I auditioned for a play but was told I was horrible. The usual.

“Thanks for the date, Henny.” I said as we walked out the door.

“Henny?” He asked regarding my nickname.

“I think you could use a nickname.” He chuckled and played with my hair.

“Would you do me the honor of going on another date?” He asked.

“YES!” I eagerly said.

A perfect date.

“Excuse me sir, but it seems like I forgot where the classic literature is.” I said to Hendrix, making sure to lean over and give him a seductive look.

“It’s on the second floor, dumbass.” He said without looking away from his computer.

“Idiot. Why don’t you come to show me.” I said. Hendrix rolled his eyes and stepped out of the counter and walked next to me.

“Want me to hold your hand too?” He said, holding out his hand. I grabbed it quickly. I walked, or rather skipped, my way to the second floor with Hendrix being added weight behind me.

When we reached the aisle, I quickly put a small kiss on Hendrix’s cheek. It was sudden and he probably wouldn’t have felt it if he wasn’t intensely looking at me.

“What was that for?” He asked while rubbing the spot I kissed him in.

“Did you not like it?” I panicked a bit, hoping it was consensual. Oh who am I kidding. I did it without asking him! Shit!

“Of course I liked it.” He said. I stopped panicking and looked up at him. “I’m just upset that it was small.” He said.

“Then what would you prefer?” I asked. His eyes wandered to my lips. I licked them. Hen’s eyes became dark, almost lust filled.

“This.” He said. He lunged forward and made my back knock onto the book shelf behind me. I grunted and Hen’s body pressed on mine. His knee went to rub on my groin. His left hand went to grab my neck a bit tightly. Hen leaned down and planted a deep kiss on my lips.

It was a fight for a while until I let him take total control. I also deepened the kiss, wanting a bit more. My hands roamed his back. His left hand was still on my neck and right hand gripped some of my hair.

“There. That’s what I wanted.” He said when he let go of my lips. His hands left my body but I left my hands on his body.

“That was so hot.” I said.

“There’s more if you want it.” He shifted to move my knee on his groin. I felt a snake there. That’s not a snake!

“Maybe some other time.” I said and walked down the aisle while Hen followed close behind me.

Hendrix was explaining to me how the Dewey Decimal system works and the strenuous process he has to go through to put books away because many don’t put them back themselves. While he was explaining, I was looking at that damn succulent that I’ve been wanting.

“East!” He snapped in my face. I looked away from my green baby and looked back at him. “Did you get any of that?” He asked. My mind was blank.

“Umm. Yeah.” I said, hoping he wouldn’t ask a follow up question.

“Where do the music books go, then?” He asked, obviously not believing me.

“Uhh, second floor?” He rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“What’s gotten you distracted, East. Is there someone else?” He asked when he sat next to me. Judging from his tone, it’s obvious he’s joking.

“Yeah. He’s green and adorable.”

“Shrek?!” He said.

“No, idiot. It’s a fucking plant!” He slapped my back.

“I know. I’ve seen you looking at that plant. Don’t think of stealing it.” He said. But all I heard was ‘Go ahead, Easton. It’s yours. Take it.’

That plant might as well have my name on it. I’m destined to have it.

“Easton! There’s a customer!” Hendrix said to me. I quickly let go of his hand realizing that he had to go to attend a customer. I almost forgot he actually has to work and can’t spend all his time flirting with me.

I sat on the chair waiting for Hen to finish his work. I spent the time finding hiding places all over the bookstore. You never know if a robber might one day walk in and try to kill you. That’s why you should always look for not only an exit but a place to hide. And a weapon… just to be safe.

“Why are you on top of the shelf?” Hen asked. I looked down to see him amused by me.

“Hiding.” Is all I said. Hen brought over a ladder and climbed up.

“Someone could easily get this ladder and climb up here, by the way.” He said.

Shit! Guess the top shelf is a no go.

It’s been a few weeks since I started dating Hendrix. We’ve formed a tradition. I would visit the bookstore three times a week. He would come over to my house two times a week. And the other times were random days.

A few days into our relationship, after our third date, is when we decided to have sex. It was scary, I won’t lie. But Hen kept implying that it didn’t hurt him when I did it.

Dinner at his home was nothing like I expected. I expected his home to be dark and full of books and bottles of alcohol everywhere.

Instead, I was met with a modern loft with high windows and green plants.

And what was weirder was that Hen explained to me that every morning he likes to do yoga naked in front of his window and show off. Asked me to join him sometime.

“East?” Hen said while he laid his head on my thighs. His eyes looked up at me with adorable eyes.

“Hen?” I asked back. He closed his eyes before I calmed him down by touching his hair.

“I think I love you.” He said. Those single words stopped my world. The only time someone told me ‘I love you’ was my parents. No one else ever told me that before. “Shit I made it awkward, didn’t I!?” Hen said. He stood up and began to walk away.

I got up and quickly grabbed his wrist. “Hen. Wait!” I yelled. I turned him around and let him take his time to look down at me. “I… I love you too.” I breathed out.

It was a moment of silence after a moment of love.

“You do?” He asked. I nodded my head. He hugged me tightly. “Thanks for letting me love you.” He said.

“You’re welcome for the love.” I responded.

“Great! Now I’m crying!” He laughed and wiped some tears.

“Let’s go to the bookstore and hang out.”

“Yeah. That sounds fun.”

We exited his home and got in his car. We drove to the bookstore. The place where I met him.

“Remember this?” I said as I held out the book I first got when I came here.

“Boring book. Don’t remind me of it.” He laughed.

“Oh and this!” I held up the book with the guy in bondage.

“Two people have checked that out in the past three weeks.” He responded. Then promptly said, “One time it came back with stains.” I quickly put the book back and gagged.

“And this is where I hid on the top shelf.” I pointed to the top area.

“Still don’t know why you did that.”

“And down there, at the table. It’s where you gave me a massage!” I pointed to the seat where Hen’s hands made me pass out.

We took the stairs to the third floor. A clearing where the bean bags were brought another memory.

“And this was our first date.” Hen said. I watched as he fell onto the beanbag. “I think about it sometimes.” He says, staring at the ceiling.

“Think of what?” I asked.

“Traveling somewhere out there. I’ve been stuck in this store for so long. The only thing that’s got me going is seeing you.” He said.

“Then do it. Go somewhere. See the world.”

“Will you be with me?” He looked at me with expectant eyes.

“From here to the end of the earth.”

He smiled at that. It seems that being here made him feel better. Or maybe… him being with me makes him feel better. I have no idea what our future holds. More books? Trips to the world? Naked yoga? Mind blowing massages?

But all those things have one thing in common: They involve Hendrix.

“What do you have in your hands?” Hen asked.

I opened my jacket and hid it under and kept it away from him when he wasn’t looking.

“Nothing.” I sneakily smiled at him.

I cupped the small succulent in my hands and held it with all my might. I know the perfect place to put this in. And all my other stuff. Hopefully Hendrix will be fine with me moving in with him.

Told you I’d get that succulent.

The hot guy was a bonus.

THE END
