Chapter One

A

LARIC

Tears fell down my face as I watched my father, the strongest man I know, slowly slip away from the mortal world. There’s a depressing feeling, seeing the man who raised you for 12 years, begin to become weaker every minute.

“Alaric…” Dad’s raspy voice called out to me. I leaned in closer. I wiped my tears away, hoping that maybe if he saw I was fine, he too would feel fine.

“Dad?” My young voice asked back. Dad patted my hair, rubbing my soft curls.

“Listen to me, Alaric. There will come a time when you need to step up.” Dad grunted in pain and rubbed his chest. “Be the man that I want you to be. I won’t be here for long.” His voice, coarse, still had that fatherly affection.

“Dad! Please don’t go! You’re strong! You can fight this!” I pleaded. I grabbed on the sleeve of his robe and began to pull on it.

“I’m afraid I can’t, my boy.” He took a deep breath in and regained his composure. “Take care of your mom. And remember, be the man who takes the high road.”

“I love you, dad.” I sobbed into his chest. I heard people begin to scramble around me. I turned and saw several doctors and nurses scattering around, trying to find a way to save my dad.

“Alaric. You have to go to your room.” The head guard told me.

“No! I’m not leaving him!” I pleaded. I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I turned, I saw my mom with tears rolling down her face. I’ve never seen a more broken woman before.

“Alaric. Go to your room. Please.” She pleaded. I agreed and stood up.

“Dad. I’m going to be a good king when I grow up. I’m going to make you proud.” I said to him.

“I know you will. You’ll always make me proud.” Dad said. He began to close his eyes as the heart monitor began to speed up.

“Someone get the prince and queen out of here!” The head doctor yelled. The guard began to lightly push us out of the room.

The last look I saw of my dad was him reaching for us until the large grand doors slammed in our faces. I turned to mom and saw her crying. She stopped crying when she noticed I was watching her.

“Theo. Take Alaric to his room.” She said. I figured I should go to sleep. I gave my mom one last hug before Theo brought me to my room.

I sat on my bed but couldn’t find the energy to try and sleep. It sounds weird, but sometimes, trying to go to sleep requires so much energy. Instead, I watched outside as the heavy rain poured down. The rain hit my window and created a soothing symphony that should’ve put me to sleep. But I stayed up.

Sometime during the middle of the night, after I tried to sleep but ended up reading a book, I heard a sound that sent chills down my spine. A heartbreaking scream that I would never forget. It was the sound of my mom screaming. It wasn’t a cry for help, but a cry to someone.

Then the realization hit me. My dad is dead. He’s died. It would explain my mom’s reaction. I now have no father. And the country now has no king.

The next few days passed like a dream. Funeral preparations were underway and all I could do was be there for my mom, like I told dad I would do. I would occasionally sneak away and spend some time crying to myself. But for now, I need to put on a brave face.

Now that the kingdom no longer has a king, the country is left in a weird position. Since I’m not of age yet, it’s up to my mom to take over. At least until I turn 19.

8 years have passed since the passing of my father. I still think about him from time to time. When I’m met with a decision to make, I’ll imagine what my father would say or do. I was sworn in as king a year ago. And now, there’s something that I’ve wanted to do and can now do.

I sat on the throne, in front of all the members of the ruling class. No one dared to speak while I had the throne, unless I asked them to. Throughout the years, with the passing of my dad and my mom becoming closed off, I’ve formed a cold persona. If it was legal, I would’ve ordered the execution of several high ranking officials because they just rub me the wrong way.

“As of today, I hereby ban roses within the borders of Magnoline.” I announced to the room. My proposal was met with gasps and murmurs. My mom, who sat on her own throne, turned to me with a look of shock but not of surprise.

A member from the aristocrat class stepped forward. I gave him a nod for him to speak. “But, your highness, roses are a fundamental part of our kingdom. We have world renowned roses. We can’t just ban them!” He spoke.

“You forget that I have the power to ban whatever I want. Unless you want to challenge my authority, I advise you to follow accordingly.” I told him. He lowered his head and stepped back in line.

“Alaric.” Mom whispered to me. “Are you certain this is a good idea? It sounds a bit controversial.” Mom said.

“I’m certain. I know what I’m doing.” I said.

I stood up from my throne and began walking through the corridors, making my way into the outer gardens of the castle. There, I saw a man with a machine in hand. He’s been waiting for me.

“Now, your highness?” He asked. I nodded.

The man, who wore an all white suit, turned on the machine and fire began spitting out of it. He began to flame the rose bushes entirely, no patch or flower spared. I watched on as the roses all burned until nothing but ash remained. A smile came on my face, knowing that these wretched plants are now gone.

I turned and saw through the windows that everyone had been watching as the roses burned.

I hope they realize that I’m serious and refuse to back down from this. From here on out, roses are banned everywhere.

The next day, after many hours of press conferences, I sat in my office and listened to some voicemails left by other officials.

“Your highness, please reconsider! Roses have been in our family for ages!”

“King Alaric, could there possibly be another solution? Maybe a rose tax? You can’t just take them away!”

“My family’s name has the word rose in it. Are we going to have to change our name?”

“You’re such a fucking asshole! Are you that insecure you have to have to ban something so-so-so beautiful?! Who the fuck do you think you are?!”

That last voicemail just made me snap a bit. How dare someone like him say such words to me! I checked the name on the voicemail and noticed the name belonged to a royal official.

I called up the number and waited for him to pick up.

“Your highness!” His enthusiastic voice sounded forced. Almost like he’d just woken up. “What can I help you with today?” He asked.

“Seriously?” I asked. “That voicemail you left me last night. If I wasn’t so nice, your head would be rolling down the sidewalk.”

“What voicemail?” He asked. I rolled my eyes.

“This one.” I pressed play on the office phone and the angry yelling began to play. Once the voicemail was over, I could hear him panicking.

“That wasn’t me, sir! I swear! You know I would never say such things to you! You have to believe me!” He pleaded into the phone.

“Then who else could it be? Did a fucking ghost call my number on your phone and left that! Stop playing with me!” I angrily said.

I could hear him muttering to himself until he gasped. “Oh shit!” He muttered to himself. “I can explain, your highness! You see, I went out last night and sort of… maybe… went home with someone.” He said.

“So a random person was able to get into your phone, which has government documents and contacts of world leaders, and call the fucking king?!” I angrily said into the phone.

“Y-Yes, your highness.” He muttered.

“We’ll need to discuss your professionalism later.” I began to transfer his call to the secretary along with a report and what he did. I could hear him pleading in the background to set the situation aside. However, I ignored his cries.

I sat at my desk, a pen in hand, and tried to think of what other things I could ban. There was a knock on my door. Based on the three quick knocks and one final one, it was my mom.

“Come in!” I announced.

“Alaric, there’s someone in the throne room, requesting you.” She said.

“Get someone to handle it, I’m busy.” I said.

“He’s very adamant on talking to you. Just go see what he wants.” Mom said. With a loud groan in annoyance, I stood up and began making my way to the throne room.

As I walked in the high-ceiling room with large windows draped with velvet-blue curtains, I noticed a guy standing near the throne. I could only see behind him, but I saw he had messy black hair and had his sleeve rolled up.

When I reached my throne and sat down, I finally saw his face. He had a well defined face with solid bone structure. And he had the prettiest pink lips I’ve ever seen before.

“Speak now! I don’t have all day!” I told him. He had a angry-like expression on his face. Similar as if you’ve insulted a man regarding his masculinity. He was hurt.

“Your highness! Yesterday you banned roses! Roses are an important part of my business! If I lose them, my income will drop! I can’t let that happen!” He said.

“I don’t know what you want me to do. Are you a florist?” I asked him.

“Yes, your highness. I own the florist shop Bellerose & Roses in the town center.” He explained. “Roses are our main business. We have world renowned roses. People come from all over the world to see them! And yesterday, I got this!” He pulled out a piece of paper that looked like an injunction our government sent out.

“So? What’s the problem? Just do what it says and you won’t be fined.” I simply told him.

“It says, and I quote, ‘Within the timeframe of a fortnight, any plants within the species of rosa rubiginosa must be disposed of.’ Do you know how much I will lose in profits?!” The man asked.

“Do what it says. Is that so difficult to understand?” I began to get annoyed.

“Come on, your highness. Reconsider! Please?!” His plea sounded more desperate.

I stared at him while placing my head on my fist and leaning back.

“No.” I said.

He turned red in the face and ripped up the injunction.

“You selfish brat! You get a bit of power and suddenly can’t act” He began yelling expletives while I watched as this man-child freaked out over some flowers.

Then something clicked. The way this guy is yelling. His tone and how high pitched it sounded. It sounded similar to the voicemail from earlier.

This must be the guy who dared speak against me.

Chapter Two

P

HILIP

As I yelled at the king, I stomped on the ripped paper that told me to destroy my prized roses. All the while, the king just sat back and watched with amusement like I’m a fucking jester performing for him.

After I was done, I was gasping for air.

“You done with your tantrum?” The king asked.

“No, I’m fucking not!” I yelled back. “If I destroy my roses, I’ll lose a majority of my profits! Are you going to pay me back all of my lost income?” I asked.

“Mmm, it would make sense to pay you back. I’ll give you one silver coin per bouquet or roses destroyed.” The king said.

“Wha- That’s absurd! That’s too little. I might as well close up shop!” I retorted back.

“It seems like we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot. Why don’t we introduce ourselves?” The king ignored my previous demands.

All right you sexy bastard, I’ll play along with you.

With a huff, I figured it wouldn’t be bad to try to get on his good side. “My name is Philip Bellerose. I own the biggest florist shop downtown.” I said.

“Hmm, what a coincidence that your last name is Bellerose and you are a florist. Is it a coincidence?” The king asked.

“Not really. My grandparents changed their name when they opened up the shop to make it more appealing.” I said.

“And your parents? Where are they?” He asked.

I just want to get compensation in case I have to burn my roses! This feels like an interrogation!

“My dad left before I was born. My mom died when I was 15.” I explained. I could see I struck a nerve with the king at the mention of my dead mother. I guess it’s because the king himself lost his father when he was young.

He cleared his throat. “Tell you what, A gold coin per 2 pounds of roses. Final offer.” He said, switching out of his amused look to a business one.

“Let me think about it, your highness.” I said.

“Very well. You have two days.” He said. I bowed and turned to leave until I heard him call back. “Wait a minute!” He yelled.

I turned and saw him standing up.

“Yes, your highness?” I asked.

“I received a voicemail last night. It was from a particular person who said some interesting words to me. Do you know anything about it?” He asked, his deep blue eyes staring into me. His curly brown hair was draped over his forehead, and his eyebrows furrowed.

My blush immediately gave me away. He caught me!

“May I ask how you managed to do that?” The king asked. It’s not like I can lie to him. He already knows.

“I may or may not have gotten a bit drunk yesterday at a pub. And I may or may not have found one of your court advisors and flirted with him. And I may or may not have gone home with him and proceeded to leave a drunk voicemail intended for you.” I chuckled awkwardly while the king gave me the stink eye.

“You could be arrested for that, you know?” He said.

“For talking shit about the king? Seems kind of North Korea to me.” I replied.

“No. For going onto the personal device of a king advisor. It’s similar to a civilian sneaking into the Pentagon and going through classified files. I should have you arrested.” He said. But then he leaned forward. “But I enjoyed our fight. I hope we’ll see each other soon.” His piercing blue eyes staring right into my soul.

“Two days. Then I’ll make my decision regarding the compensation for the roses.” I said.

“Can’t wait.” He had a smirk on his face. I guess it was amusing to him when I had my little outburst. I’m honestly surprised I haven’t been put in a dungeon already.

As I walked out of the castle, I passed by several large bushes of other flowers. But none to be roses. All either tulips. lilies, or hydrangeas. Good taste, but judging by the browning of some of the leaves on the lilies, they might need to fix their water system to have more humidity.

And based on the burns on the white hydrangeas, it would be advised for them to place them in a shadier spot since these flowers are quite delicate.

I was escorted out of castle grounds and found myself outside the gates, watching as everyone walked past me. I decided that, like most adults, I need to get to work. I walked the way to the downtown area and found the flower shop I inherited from my mother.

The sign, which read closed, was now flipped over to open. Since no one was here yet, I went to the breakroom and had a quick breakfast. I kept rethinking the conversation I had with King Alaric. He was very adamant on trying to expel all roses from the kingdom.

As I turned on the TV, I was met with the American CNN channel. There was a picture of King Alaric on the day of his coronation a year ago. I turned up the volume and listened to the male reporter talking.

“As of today, his majesty King Alaric of Magnoline has announced an official ban on all roses within the borders of his country. The citizens of the country have expressed immense opposition but there has been no statement by the King or cabinet member.” He said. As I was going to listen more, the sound of the entrance door bell ringing alerted me of an incoming customer.

Quickly, I fixed my hair and saw an elderly man walking in.

“How can I help you, Mr. Moulin?” I asked the kind older gentleman.

“It’s Camille’s birthday today. I wanted to get her favorite but I assume that…” He said with a heartbreaking tone.

“That’s right. You get her yellow roses every year.” I said.

“Everyone else has already burned or shipped out their roses. You seem to always be stocked. Got any in the back?” Monsieur Moulin asked.

“Let me go see if I have anything.” I said. I walked into the back, which was a large area in the center of several other tall buildings. There was a large greenhouse that was built and had extra supplies of flowers.

That’s when I remembered that I never disposed of my roses. I held onto them because I figured I could charm the King into changing his mind. I found a few yellow roses and grabbed enough for a bouquet and walked back into the shop.

“It’s your lucky day, monsieur Moulin. I still have some.” I said. I could see him begin to tear up a bit at the sight of his late wife’s favorite flowers.

“You truly are an angel.” He said.

“I’m going to wrap these up for you. And I’ll add some daisies on the top to disguise them.” I said I started my process of getting some old newspapers and wrapping the roses. I then carefully placed some daisies on the top to hide the roses underneath.

When I turned, I saw Monsieur Moulin pulling his wallet. “Here you go, Philip.” He handed me a 50 note.

“Oh no, monsieur! This is way too much! I can’t accept this!” I tried handing him the note back.

“Nonsense. You had my Camille’s flowers. You deserve the extra money.” He said. I tried to hand it to him but he quickly walked out of my store and down the store.

Well, shit. I can’t just leave the store unattended. As I looked down at the money, an idea popped into my head.

If I can make this much money in just one bouquet of roses, how much would I make in the long run? It would be… a lot. I could run an underground rose market, away from the public and eyes of King Alaric.

I’ll tell the king that I reject his offer and will just send them over to Luxembourg. It’ll clear away all suspicions. And then there’s getting the word out. I do have a client list of customers and what type of flowers they buy. It’s a gamble, and I could get caught and arrested.

But dammit, these flowers don’t deserve to be banned just because some misanthrope doesn’t want others to enjoy things. No matter King Alaric’s deal with these roses, I know they’ll find a good home.

The door rang. I looked up and saw a young woman walk in. She had a frantic look on her face. When she saw me, she quickly ran over to the counter.

“Philip!” She said. She had my attention. “I know it’s a stretch. Everyone else has run out of them, but do you still have roses?” She asked. Ah, here’s my next black-market customer.

I leaned into her ear. “What color?” I asked.

A look of relief washed over her. “Pink. Light pink.” She told me.

“I’ll be right back.” I said. I walked into the back and cut off a few pink roses. Then I got some pink carnations to cover them.

When I walked over to the woman, her face lit up at the sight of the flowers.

“Oh, thank God!” She said. “My girlfriend is going to love these.” She told me. I told her about the reasoning for the carnations, and she understood and was willing to pay extra for them. As she handed me the money, I was given more than the original price.

“Are you sure you want to pay this much?” I asked her.

“Mhm! I’m sure.” She hugged the flowers close to her and then walked out of my shop.

I don’t know what I may have just started, but it could potentially have me arrested or killed.

Throughout the day, I had customers in and out the shop. Some would buy a normal bouquet and others bought fertilizer or came to me for advice for their own gardens. But sometimes, there would be someone who would ask for roses. And as my duty as a florist, it is my job to provide the people with what they need.

The night before the next day, I knew I still needed to put extra protection because you never know. After hours, I went back to the green house and put a fake wall covering the rose section in hopes that, should someone come to inspect, they won’t see anything.

Then, I locked up and made the small trip back to my apartment. There’s just something about taking a nice big sleep after committing a crime that feels so peaceful. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m defying the king himself. The supreme authority of the land. And I’m saying fuck you by selling roses.

When I woke up the next morning, I did my morning routine. After breakfast, I checked my phone and saw several missed calls from Belden, the man who owns a bakery next to my shop.

His contact name appeared on my screen, showing that he was calling again.

“Allo?” I asked.

“God, Philip! You need to get here right-a now!” He quickly said on the phone.

“What? Why? Is there a fire?” I began to walk quickly out of my apartment.

“Worse.” He said. “King Alaric and the former Queen Anais are in front of your shop.” He said.

It felt like my balls dropped at that moment. THEE king and queen are at my flower shop! Why would they be here?

Then I remembered the roses. They must be here regarding the roses.

Oh shit! This might not end good.

Chapter Three

ALARIC

“Alaric. Why are we here? It’s too early and I’m tired.” My mother said as she sipped her warm coffee.

“Remember that deal I made with that florist. Well, I’m here today to settle it.” I replied. My mother huffed and took a deep gulp of her coffee.

I leaned against the glass door of the flower shop and waited until this irresponsible adult finally came to open his shop.

“Someone’s late.” My mother said. I looked up and saw the guy I’d had the displeasure of meeting a few days ago running down the street towards us.

I’m guessing he just found out that the king is waiting outside his shop and he’s yet to let me in. Once the guy reached us, he was gasping for breath while trying to say something.

“I’m… sorry… I kept… you… waiting… your highness.” He panted out. I stared at him, looking at his disheveled black hair. After he’d gotten his breath and wiped his forehead of sweat, he unlocked the entrance and let us in first.

My mother and I along with our head guard walked in followed by the florist who turned the sign around, indicating that he was open.

“I hope you weren’t waiting long.” He stuttered out.

“Nah, it was only an hour in the cold.” I smugly said. A slight blush went up his neck.

“Heh, sorry. I had a long night last night.” He said. I noticed his eyes trail behind me to a door. Usually people who look somewhere while acting ominously are hiding something in said area. “What brings you two here?” He asked.

“The deal. Remember? A gold coin per 2 pounds of roses. Do you accept or no?” I asked.

“I’ve decided to reject your offer. I’ve shipped the roses to a cousin twice removed in Luxembourg. I’d rather them have a home than be destroyed.” He said in a perfect speech.

Almost sounds like he rehearsed it and knew I would ask him this.

“Oh, Alaric! Look at these tulips! They’re so much nicer than the ones in Holland!” Mother awed at the bright tulips.

“Yeah, that’s nice. You mind if I look around?” I asked. He tensed up at my words.

“Uh, no. You see, these flowers…” He picked up a pot of what I assume are Johnny jump-up flowers. “… These flowers are delicate. They need care and love and compassion. They understand human emotion.” He said. Then he turned to me with a stink eye. “If I allow you anywhere near them, they’ll certainly die.” He finished.

“What?! That’s not true! See!” I picked up a pot of a plant labeled the marvel of Peru and stared at it. That’s when the most mind-fucking thing happened. The shits began closing its petals!

As soon as it happened, the florist began laughing and taunting me.

“Oh man! It usually takes them a few more minutes to close!” He slapped his knee while I stood utterly humiliated. “No way! They decided to close right as you picked them!” He wiped a tear from his eyes.

“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes and sat the plot of flowers down. “Mom! What was his name?” I asked my mom.

“Alaric! He’s right there in front of you! Why don’t you ask him yourself?” Mom told me. I turned and looked at the florist. Then I scoffed.

“No. What’s his name?” I asked my mother again.

“Philip Bellerose. His name is on his nametag.” Mother pointed out. I turned to Philip and saw he had his nametag on.

“Philip. Let me have a look around.” It wasn’t a question. I began to inspect every part of the shop.

“Hang on! You can’t just do that!” Philip protested. The royal guard placed himself in between me and Philip.

“Actually I can.” I pointed to my golden crown on my head and gave him a smug look. “Remember. I’m kind of a big deal here.” I said. His face turned red with anger but he knew he couldn’t do anything about it.

“So why, pray tell, are you exactly here for? I gave you my answer for the deal and rejected it.” Philip asked. I lifted up a box of fertilizer and checked underneath.

“Oh, you know, just for a check. You never know what criminals may be up to.” I replied.

He had a bamboozled look on his face. “Criminals? Are you implying I’m one?” Philip asked.

“When did I ever say that?” I said.

“Alaric! Look at these lilacs! Aren’t they ethereal!” Mom said.

“Mhm. Sure. What’s behind here?” I asked, pointing to a door that led out of the shop and somewhere much deeper in this block of townhouses.

“Uh, nothing important! I wouldn’t recommend going there!” Philip quickly blurted out.

“You sound a little too nervous. Is there something in here I shouldn’t be looking at?” I asked Philip. His face was red, and that means that I’ve caught him red handed.

“It’s a mess in there!” He stood in front of the door and blocked me from opening it. “I wouldn’t want you to ruin your lavish coat!” He looked like he was panicking.

“Arthur?” I asked my guard. Arthur pulled out a revolver and pointed it at Philip’s chest. “Move or your door will be painted red.” I said to him.

He muttered something before moving aside.

“That wasn’t hard now, was it?” I said in a condescending tone. I opened the door and walked to what I assume was a break room.

I opened the refrigerator and cabinets. I looked around just for anything that may stand out. A loose floorboard or crooked painting on the wall.

“You should really hire an interior designer. Even my dungeons look more hospitable.” I said.

“Oh, I’m sorry, your highness! Next time I’ll install massage chairs and a humidifier in case you decide to take time out of your precious day to sit in a derelict break room!” Philip said.

“Is something the matter, Philip? You sound like a bratty child.” I asked him.

“Of course something is the matter! I’m being essentially raided by the king for no reason under the pretense that I may be a criminal!” Philip angrily said.

“Are you a criminal?” I asked him again.

He groaned loudly and slammed his face into the wall nearby. “NO!” He loudly said.

I simply rolled my eyes and continued my search. I found another door and began to open it.

“WAIT-” I heard Philip yell but it was too late. I had already opened the door and stepped outside. I found an area that was surrounded by nearby buildings, forming a small pocket. But most of this place was occupied by a large greenhouse.

“Wow. I didn’t know your business was this expansive.” I said. I walked around and saw several large bushes of flowers. But my eyes were searching for one thing. Roses.

“So, tell me, Philip, Do you know why I hate roses?” I asked Philip.

“I would very much like to know.” He replied.

“Because in my opinion, roses are not symbols of love. They’re symbols of the consequence of love.” I said. “Do you get me?” I asked, signaling to him.

He shook his head. “Not at all.”

“What’s something that roses have on their stem?” I asked the curious florist.

“Thorns, your highness.” He answered.

“Correct! Thorns. We consider roses symbols of love but they have thorns. They prick you and hurt you. Why does something that is supposed to represent love hurt us? Because it’s not of love. It’s of pain and trickery. You’re fooled into falling for it only for it to hurt you.” I explained.

“Damn, who hurt you?” Philip said. I turned my head slowly to him and gave him a stone cold look. He quickly backed down. “Sure, let’s say that. But have you heard of the myth of how roses were created?” He asked.

“Enlighten me.” I replied.

“In the Roman legend, Venus, the goddess of love, found out about the plot to murder her moral lover Adonis. She raced to save him but cut herself on a white rose bush. She bled onto the roses and turned them red. Then there’s the Greek mythology of Chloris, the goddess of flowers. She found the dead body of a nymph and turned it into a rose. Aphrodite loved them and named them after her son, Eros.” Philip explained.

“And what do these stories mean, exactly? It’s not making my opinion on roses any better.” I said.

“I’m just saying that roses were created from heartbreak. They were created from a dark origin. But it’s been turned to represent something good. Its origins are a complete oxymoron to what it means today.” Philip explained.

“Hmm.” I said, thinking. As I continued to explore the greenhouse, I approached a wall of wood that seemed out of place.

“Wait!” Philip yelled. I bent down and saw something red underneath the wall. It looked like it was… under the wall?

As I bent down to touch it, I felt something land on my coat. When I looked at my shoulder, I saw dirt covering it.

I stood up slowly and turned to Philip, who held a handful of dirt in his hand.

I chuckled lightly. “Heh, Philip. I’m going to give you five seconds to explain why you did that.” I told him.

“There was a spider on your shoulder! I wouldn’t have reached in time!” He quickly said.

“A spider? Do you think I’m an idiot?!” I angrily said to Philip.

“Kind of…” He muttered. I turned to Arthur, who didn’t see anything because he was admiring the peonies.

I stood in shock while Philip went to get me a towel. He came back and handed it to me.

“Nu-uh! You’re cleaning it for me!” I told him. “That’s an order!” I barked at him. He sheepishly walked over to me and began to clean up the dirt on my coat.

“Fucking baby…” He softly mumbled. He kept cleaning until I felt that he did a satisfactory job.

“Welp, we’ll be leaving now!” I announced. I walked back into the flower shop and was met with my mother holding a pot of lavender flowers.

“I think these will look nice in my room.” She said. “How much?” She asked Philip.

“For you, ma’am, it’s free.” He gave her a cute- I mean- despicable smile.

“I couldn’t, Philip. You’re a businessman.” Mom kept insisting.

“I mean, you could give me a tax reduction.” He jokingly said.

“Don’t push your luck.” I told Philip. In the end, mom ended up paying half price for the flowers. As we stepped into the car, mother had a thinking look on her face.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked my mother as the car began its drive back to the castle.

“Nothing.” She smiled at me. But I didn’t believe her.

I turned around and from the back window, saw Philip give a sigh of relief and walk back into his shop. Fucking prick.

Chapter Four

PHILIP

I sighed a breath of relief as I watched the royal car drive up the street and back towards the castle. I quickly walked back into my shop and collapsed on the floor catching my breath. I still can’t believe that I was almost caught. I did have to defile myself by throwing dirt at the king, but it was worth it.

There was a pause currently as I layed on the floor, reliving every second that the king was here. My body had ignored my overwhelming feeling of anxiety and stress.

The doorbell rang, meaning someone was walking in. I turned and saw an older man with salt-pepper hair and a short-shaved beard. His attire was similar to an old pub keeper. It was Belden, the man who owned the pub next door and was the one that warned me of King Alaric.

“What is it? Are you being closed down? Arrested? Oh God! Executed?!” Belden asked.

“No…” I said in a soft voice. “I’m not in any trouble.” I said.

“Oh good! We thought we were going to have to arrange your funeral flowers this time.” He chuckled.

“I threw dirt on the king.” I said.

Belden gasped. “And you still have your hands! Sheesh! Either Lady Luck is on your side or he’s in love with you.” He said.

“Ha ha, very funny.” I stood up and began walking to the break room.

“I’m just saying. King Alaric is a bit of a prude. He banned roses and doesn’t care about the implications for other families. Had you been anyone, no doubt you’d be at the gallows right this second.” Belden said.

“Nonsense. I don’t know why I haven’t been arrested. But I’m not wasting my luck.” I opened the back door to the greenhouse where the king had been earlier. I quickly raced over to where the king had bent down.

“Still, I’m kind of a romantic. I’ll be rooting for you two!” Belden said from behind me.

When I looked down, I saw what the king had been looking at. A single red rose petal. It was being squished by the piece of wood I had placed as a make-shift wall. It does seem weird as to why a petal would be here in all places. Had he gotten a closer look, no doubt would have he found the roses behind the wall.

“Is it really a good idea to sell illegal goods?” Belden asked, standing next to me.

“They’re just flowers. Why should they be placed in the same category as cocaine or assault rifles? Of course I’m going to keep selling them.” I responded.

“Mmm okay. But if you get shut down, it’s all for nothing for your grandparents’ and mom’s legacy.” He replied.

“Nah! My ancestors would be proud of me. Our mission is to spread these beauties for the world to see. So even if I get shut down, I did it with good intentions.” I said.

“I suppose that sounds reasonable.”

I sighed as I removed the wall and saw the roses behind. I went about watering them and caring for them. In the meantime, there were customers who came by and asked for the roses. Maybe I should come up with a code for the roses. It’s too risky to just say ‘Can I have a dozen roses?’.

When closing time came, I quickly rushed home where I changed into a night outfit. Tonight, we’re drinking.

“Hey, Phil! Over here!” Chloe called out to me. I quickly raced over to her and Louis as they stood in front of the bar.

“Finally, Phil. They won’t let us in unless you aren’t here.” Louis said.

“I am friends with the owner. Of course only I’m given special privileges.” I replied. I showed the bouncer my special VIP car and my friends and I were let in. Louis left for the bar while Chloe and I stood side by side near a booth.

“Is it true?” She asked.

“Hmm?” I asked her. She brushed her brown hair out of the way and leaned into my ear.

“That the king came to your shop? People are wondering if you’re getting arrested or something.” She said.

“It was luck that I’m not.” I replied.

“And you threw dirt on him?! Wow! You’ve got balls, Phil.” She said. I chuckled and patted her shoulder. “So now that you’ve met the king, how is he? Is he really an evil person?” She asked.

“You know what? Yeah! He is! King Alaric is a bitch! I saw first hand how obnoxious he is. Thank God I threw compost on him. Fucker deserved it.” I said.

“Shhh! Lower your voice, Phil! Who knows who might be listening.” Chloe said.

“Ha! As if the king would actually send someone to follow a plebeian like me.” Louis walked over to us with beers in his hand and handed one to each of us.

“Alaric has a high ego. He would waste resources just to see how people talk about him. I’d watch your back. He already visited you earlier today.” She said.

“But I think I’m on good terms with the former queen. She bought a plant off me.” I said.

“Yeah, that’s true. But she doesn’t have absolute power anymore. Not since Alaric took the throne.” Chloe told me.

I opened my beer and took a swing at it. “He’ll listen to his mom. I bet he’s a momma’s boy.” I chuckled.

A few beers in and I could feel the buzz hitting me. I turned to Louis as he sat on his seat with his black hair messy and the top button of his shirt unbuttoned.

“L-Loius…” I sloppily called him. He turned over to me and looked me in the eye.

“Yes, Phil?” He asked.

“You’re so cute. Do you have a girlfriend? Or boyfriend?” I asked him.

“Not interested. You’re drunk, Phil. I’ll go get you some water.” He stood up and began walking to the bar.

“Aw fuck! Look at that ass!” I told Chloe as we stared at Louis’ beautiful ass. “He can’t possibly not let that get fucked!” I groaned out.

“Phil. Stop talking! My head hurts.” Chloe slammed her head on the table while I tried to comfort her. Louis eventually came back and handed me a glass of water.

“Drink up, mate. You look like a hot mess.” He said.

“You said I’m hot! Ha! You do like me!”

“That’s not what it means.” Louis looked annoyed.

I drank the whole glass of water and then felt my phone ringing. I pulled out my phone and saw it was from an unrecognizable number.

“Uhh, guys! Who is this?” I asked. Both Louis and Chloe looked at my phone and then their eyes bulged out of their sockets.

“Phil! Look at the first two numbers! That’s from a royal phone! Answer it!” Louis told me.

“But it’s 21:30! Who would be calling that time!” I groaned.

“Just answer it!” Louis kept telling me. I agreed and then put my phone next to my ear but Louis forced me to put it on speaker.

“Yellow!” I said. I saw Chloe roll her eyes.

“Is this Philip Bellerose?” A voice said.

“That is I!” I drunkenly said.

“Please hold for the Queen.” The voice said. I heard a click then a voice on the other line.

“Philip!” The former queen said.

“Oh, hi, you highness! Uh, what… what can I do for me- you! What can I do for you!” I felt myself become humiliated. Who answers the queen while being drunk?

“I’ll cut right to the chase. Our gardener is taking some time off because he inhaled some toxic fumes. Our plants have been in dire conditions. After seeing your shop earlier, I wanted to ask if you’d be willing to come over and utilize that green thumb of yours.” The queen said.

“Become the gardener for the royal family?” I asked. I turned to Chloe and then to Louis who both had shocked looks on their faces.

“You’ll get paid handsomely and we’ll compensate for all your materials.” The queen added.

“But, your highness, the King! Do I have to be around him!?” I asked.

“I’ll keep Alaric out of the way. But if you provoke him, I can’t do anything about that.” The queen said.

“Yeah! I’ll do it!” I said.

“Excellent. I’ll set up a few contracts and legal shenanigans and we’ll start work.”

“Right! It sounds like a blast!” I eagerly said.

“Are you drunk, Philip?” The queen asked.

“Uh, no…”

“Get some sleep. We’ll talk tomorrow.” The queen said. Before I could say bye, she hung up.

“Oh my gosh! The queen just hired you!” Chloe said.

“Hmm? What happened?” Louis asked.

“I’ll tell you tomorrow.” Chloe said. “But Phil, who’s going to look after your shop? None of us are good with plants. Louis’ succulent literally dried up under his watch. And they’re meant to survive droughts!” She expressed her concern.

“Calm down you two! Look, I have a cousin in Denmark that is also in the plant business. I’ll just call him over and let him run my shop.” I explained.

Both Chloe and Louis took a second to take that in.

“Ohhhh! Bram! I miss him!” Louis said.

“Bram! I haven’t seen him since ate that poison ivy leaf!” Chloe said.

“I think I should get home. I have a big day tomorrow.” I said and began to get up from my seat.

“Wait!” Chloe said. I turned and saw her trying to also get up but stumbling. “Can- Can you take me too! I think I’m drunk.” She muttered.

“You ARE drunk, Chlo.” Louis snarkily replied.

I rolled my eyes and helped them both get up. Once outside, I got a taxi for them and shoved them in and told the driver where to take them.

“Hey, Phil…” Louis drunkenly said. I leaned in as he rubbed my face with his palm. “Don’tchu worry, my ass ain’t a virgin.” He said. Chloe cheered upon hearing that.

The driver just wanted to get these two home.

“That’s good to hear.” I said. I closed the car door and let the taxi go on its way while I began to walk home and try to get a good night’s rest.

Because soon, I’ll be part of the royal family. Or, I guess their staff.

Chapter Five

ALARIC

As I watched out my large window into the distance, I sipped my tea knowing that this whole land was mine. It has been a few days since I’ve visited Philip’s flower shop. Something about the way he was acting when I arrived was… off. I know that I have a superior aura, so of course he would be nervous.

However, I’ve seen my fair share of liars and cheats. I know when someone is lying. A lump forms in their throat. They struggle to talk. And their eyes look everywhere except at the person they’re lying to.

For now, I’ll leave Philip be. The man threw dirt on me. According to the Royal Constitution of The Kingdom of Magnoline Chapter 6; Section V; Clause 2.3, defiling any form of the highness’ clothing is an offense. Though, I’m not a stickler for rules. Only when they apply to me do I care.

“Alaric.” Mother said from behind me. I turned and saw her walking towards me.

“Mother.” I replied back.

“You have that meeting with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs later. And then there’s your interview with CNN regarding your war on roses.” She said.

“Yes, mom. I know. It’s in my calendar.” I explained.

“Good! So what are we drinking?” Mom asked, picking up a tea cup and pouring herself some.

“Chamomile.” I replied.

“Ooh, goody! I used to drink this with your father when he had breaks in between his meetings.”

I was distracted from the window for a while until I decided to turn back. I once again looked out into the distance but then looked downwards into the grand gardens. My life was going great until all of the sudden, I saw something that irks my eyes.

“Mom!” I quickly said. “There’s a peasant in our gardens!” I said.

Mom looked into the gardens. “That’s Philip.” She said.

“Mom! There’s a Philip in our garden!” I said with urgency.

“Oh, stop that, Alaric! We needed a gardener and he was the one that I liked.” She said.

“But mom! It’s Philip! The guy who threw dirt on me. The one with attitude and left that voicemail for me. Do you remember?” I asked.

“Calm down, Alaric. I spoke to Philip and we agreed that you two would not interact. Unless you decide to go up to him and talk to him yourself. He’s going to be around for a while. So get used to seeing him.” Mom explained.

Dammit! She knows that she’s still in her rights to dictate what occurs in the boundaries of the castle. I’m not allowed to reject this. I could change the law, but I’d need approval from the previous monarchs, and mom wouldn’t agree to it. So, in the end, I’m essentially stuck with seeing Philips’ face for the next few weeks.

“Fine. I’ll stay out of his way. But if he even tries anything with the roses, I’m kicking him out.” I told her. “That goes for you too!” I added.

She was intrigued by this. “I wouldn’t expect less from you.” She sipped on her tea.

My phone alarm went off, meaning it was time for my meeting. I said a quick goodbye to my mom and gave a final death glare to Philip, who was unaware that I could see him, and then left for my meeting.

After the meeting ended, I headed back to the kitchen for a quick snack. I saw my mother there, fixing up a nice glass of lemonade and some biscuits.

“Aww, you shouldn’t have.” I reached over to grab a biscuit until she swatted my handed away.

“No! Not for you! It’s for Philip.” She said.

“You’re making HIM a snack but not your own son?!” I felt betrayed.

“Philip.” Mom looked me in the eye. “You have over a dozen cooks who will prepare you anything you want at any moment’s notice. Remember that time you wanted fresh lobster from the US and the chef literally went by plane?! Or when you wanted authentic sushi from a small shop in the middle of Japan? Ask someone to make you something.” She said.

I stared at her. “I don’t like your attitude.” Is all I told her. Since I wasn’t feeling like bothering any of the chefs, I picked up an apple and a knife. I cut into the apple and ate the slices off the knife.

Mom’s phone began ringing. She picked it up and looked upset.

“What’s wrong? Orphanage on fire?” I chuckled.

“No. Even worse. Their reading time reader is sick. I’m going to go into town and read for the children. Can you take this out to Philip?” She asked.

“If I take that out to him, who knows what I’ll do to it.” I said.

“Alaric, this is serious! Those kids want Charlotte’s Web! I need to give them Charlotte’s Web!” She said.

“But-” I tried protesting but she cut me off.

“Thank you! I have to go! Bye!” She began running out of the kitchen into the hall and left out of sight.

So now, my snack time has been ruined by Philip. Once again, he managed to ruin my day. And I have to see his face. Even though mom promised that I wouldn’t have to encounter him, ever.

With a huff, I grabbed the tray of food and walked into the garden. I searched around for a figure with dark messy black hair. I found him near the hydrangeas, working away. I walked towards him and cleared my throat.

“Mother asked me to bring this to you.” I said. He became startled and turned around. I was met with forest green eyes looking back at me. His messy, sweaty hair was stuck to his forehead. His white, tight fitting shirt clung onto his strong torso.

I had to mentally slap myself and look away.

“For me?” He asked, pointing at himself.

“No, for the flowers. Of course you!” I said. He stood up and first bowed in my presence.

“Thank you for your generosity.” He said. I muttered a ‘whatever’ and handed him the tray. He set the tray down on a nearby bench and removed his dirty gloves.

When he picked up a biscuit, he stopped and just stared at it. It was like he was inspecting it, trying to make sense of it or see if anything was wrong.

“If you’re worried that I poisoned it, calm down. Because I didn’t.” I said.

“I never said that. Why are you assuming that I’m assuming that you did something wrong?” He said back.

“Oh please! If I wanted to poison you, I would taint the bottom cookies to give you a sense of safety so it’ll hit you suddenly. Or the lemonade to make you ingest to poison faster. But I didn’t. So just eat the damn thing!” I said.

He stared at me with his mouth open and the biscuit near his lips. He cautiously took a bite and chewed on it and then swallowed. I’d rather watch paint dry.

“See? You’re fine. Just eat up and get back to work.” I said.

“Do you want one?” He asked. Seeing as how I didn’t get to finish my snack, I figured a biscuit would do no harm.

“Sure.” I said. Philip held the tray of biscuits in his hand.

As I tried to reach for one, I saw he was pulling the plate away from me. When I reached further, he held it to his right. When I tried to reach for his right, he moved it to the left.

“Stop!” I said. I reached for the plate but he kept moving it out of the way. “I said stop!” I said. He had a smirk on his face as he watched the king become flustered over some fucking biscuits.

“Make me.” Philip replied. Now I was getting really fussy.

“Just give me that damn biscuit!” I ordered him. He finally held out the plate for me and let me take one. “Just like that?” I asked.

“I had my fun.” He said. I ate my biscuit and wanted another one but he decided one was enough for me and proceeded to eat the entire plate in a single swipe.

I stared in shock as he chewed on the biscuit and swallowed it all down. And his smirk never left his face.

“Whoops! All gone!” He said. I rolled my eyes and watched as he wiped his forehead of sweat.

“I’ll be leaving now.” I said, not wanting to be around him anymore.

I heard him chuckle, thinking he won the battle. But sweet Philip, the war isn’t over.

As I was walking back to the castle, I saw a hose on the floor. A simple, but mischievous plan, came into my mind. I reached down and saw that the hose has a handle to let water out. Then, I walked back to Philip.

“Hey, Philip!” I called out to him. He still had his back to me, trimming some of the bushes.

“I’m busy! Go away!” He said. I kept walking to him and waited for him to turn around.

“You look hot. You need to cool down.” I said to him.

“Cool down?” He turned around. “What are you-”

I cut him off when I turned on the hose and began to douse him in water. I sprayed the water to his face as the water trickled down to his body and soaked him more. I turned off the hose while he was gasping for air.

Red faced, he looked up at me with anger. “What the fu-” I turned on the hose again.

“How’s the water?” I jokingly asked. Philip brought his hands up to cover his face and shield the water away from him.

When I decided I had enough of my fun, I turned off the hose and watched a completely soaked Philip. He was obviously shocked that I would spray him with water. Maybe if he’d given me another biscuit he wouldn’t be wet right now.

“What. The. Actual. Fuck!” Philip then began to charge at me.

“Guards- OOF!” Philip tackled me and pinned me on the floor.

“You bitch!” Philip began to slap my chest over and over again. I slapped him back and soon we were in a slapping match.

“Get off me, peasant!” I said in disgust. Philip grabbed his dirt covered glove and began to rub it all over my precious shirt.

“Jerk!” He said.

“Asshead!” I replied.

I grabbed Philip by the shoulder and managed to flip him over and pin him this time. He was caught off guard which allowed me to get a few slaps on his face.

“Yeah, you fucking like that? Huh?” I asked.

“Get off!” Philip said.

Where are the fucking guards?!

“What is going on here!?” A voice called out. Both Philip and I turned and saw my mother standing a few feets away from us watching us with wide eyes.

I quickly got off of Philip and dusted myself off.

“He started it!” I pointed at the dirty man on the floor.

“Nu-uh! He did!” Philip said, pointing at me.

We went back and forth and talked over each other, trying to explain each other. Mom just stood and wasn’t sure what to think.

Fuck! This is not how I expected this day to go!

Chapter Six

PHILIP

Both the King and I were talking over one another. The former Queen just stood and watched the both of us with a shocked expression on her face. Not to mention, I was shivering from the cold after the king hosed me down with water.

“Enough!” The queen yelled. We both stopped talking. The king because that’s his mom, and I because she’s a royal.

“Mom, if you’d let me-” The king tried speaking.

“No. I want Philips’ side first. Care to tell me?” The queen said to me.

“Of course. I was enjoying my gardening when king Alaric came and gave me a snack. I offered him some. Then I was jokingly teasing him. Next thing you know, I’m fucking soaking wet!” I exclaimed.

“Hmm. Thank you for your input. Now, Alaric?” The queen asked the asshole next to me.

“He attacked me! He ruined my coat. I could’ve died! He needs to be placed in the dungeons right this minute!” The king quickly yelled.

“That’s a lie! I defended myself!” I retaliated.

“You two are acting like children.” The queen looked irritated. “Look, I’m not in charge, and I’m not a mediator. I’m going inside, you two talk it out. M’kay?” The queen said.

“But-” I tried saying but the queen had already walked away.

I was told that I wasn’t going to have to interact with the King as long as we stayed away from each other. And here we are now.

I turned to the king, who had removed his coat and only wore a white button up. I awed at his muscles under his shirt and how the wet fabric stuck to each crevice.

“Take a picture, why don’t you.” The king said. I quickly looked away, pretending I wasn’t doing anything.

I could hear the annoyed grunts from the king as he cleaned his coat and fixed his hair. I could also hear him muttering things towards me but I acted oblivious.

“Guards!” The king called out. I turned and saw three men running towards us. When they arrived, the king singled to me. “Take him to the dungeons.” He announced.

I snapped my head at him. “Wait! No! You can’t do this!” I pleaded.

“I can, actually. Take him to the west wing chamber.” The king said to a guard.

Two of the other guards stood next to me and firmly grabbed my arms and began leading me away.

“How long do we leave him in there?” The main guard asked.

“Until I say so.” The king replied. He turned and gave me a smirk.

“Why you little-!” I lunged at him but was held back. “Let me go! Let me go!” I kept screaming. The head guard came over to me and placed a bag over my head.

“If you’re smart, you’ll shut up. Got it?” I heard him say.

Since it’s not a smart idea to fight back, how about I don’t. Knowing that I was getting dragged, I slumped my body and dug my feet into the dirt. The two men carrying me began tugging on my arm harder.

“Sir, he’s putting up a fight!” One of the guards said.

“No I’m not!” I replied.

“Just pick him up. Hurry, we don’t want to waste time.” The guard said. Next thing you know, I feel my arms and legs being firmly grasped as I’m lifted off the ground.

Not going to lie, this feels kind of nice. Almost like I’m royalty. But instead of being taken to a throne, I’m being taken to a dungeon. So… fun times.

The air around me began to feel cold. I could hear the sound of the guards’ shoes hitting hard concrete. I’ve heard about the dungeons. Most places use prisons but any crimes committed on the royal land are to be subjected to the dungeons.

Rumors say that they still have mideval torture methods down here. But no one has ever been under here.

The sound of a creaky gate opening let me know that we had reached the room. I was pushed in and the bag was removed off my head. I was expecting a dark place with rats everywhere. Chains on the wall and a simple dirty mattress.

But when I looked around the room, it looked like a simple apartment. The walls were painted a light blue. There were seats and a nice bed in one corner. And when I looked at another wall, I saw a door which led to a private bathroom.

“Am I in the right place?” I asked. The head guard chuckled. I turned and saw him at the door.

“We don’t really have dungeons anymore. Most guards come down here to relax. But when we need to, we lock some people in here.” The guard locked the gate. “You’ll be here for however long the king decides.” He began to walk away.

“Wait! Don’t leave me! I’m innocent!” I tried calling. However, no one came back.

All I wanted to do was plant tulips…

I went over to the bed and layed down in it. I rolled around and made sure the water from my clothes seeped into the blankets. I was a bit dry now, so at least I’m not too uncomfortable. The window let in a nice amount of light.

I ended up falling asleep on the bed. The sound of the gate unlocking woke me up. I saw the queen open the gate and walk in.

“Hey, how are you doing?” She asked me.

“Uh, a bit tired.” I replied groggily.

“Sorry I didn’t come earlier. The king insisted I leave you down here for a bit so you can learn your lesson.” She said.

“How long have I been down here?” I asked.

“Four hours. I think my son has calmed down now. I’m here to take you back.” She said. She began to stand up but I kept sitting in the bed.

“Why is the king like that?” I asked her.

“Like how?” She turned and asked me.

“Why is he so… stubborn? He takes offense to anything. He’s ignorant of other’s opinions. I’m not judging your ability to raise him! I’d never do that! But, what happened?” I asked.

The queen sat at the foot of the bed and looked at a vase with artificial flowers in it.

“I’m sure you know about the former king, King Duvall. My husband.” She said.

“Yeah. He died a few years ago. I’m guessing losing a father wasn’t exactly good for a growing king.” I said.

“The king loved his father. His father taught him how to be a king but what it meant. He gave his son long lectures about being a man with morals. He used past kings and their rises and falls as lessons for Alaric. But after he died, it was like he wanted nothing to do with anything related to his dad.” The queen said.

Her misty eyes showed that she still misses her husband. Despite the years that have passed, the wound still stings.

“How was Alaric after the former king died? Did he change that much?” I asked.

“It was almost a sudden change. He took a small role and just did what he needed to do at first. I think once the death settled in, he felt like he needed to become the head of the household. Even at a young age, Alaric was already attending meetings and had a close relationship with the King of England. Day in, day out. He never stopped working.” She explained.

“Do you ever blame yourself?” I asked her.

“Oh yeah. Many times. I always felt guilty because, rather than raise my son, it was like he raised me. I promised my husband that I would look after him and raise him. Instead, the opposite happened.”

“Do you ever wonder if maybe the king is like this because he never actually grieved. He felt like he needed to grow up overnight and had to suppress his feelings. That would explain his cold nature and maybe even his inability to take responsibility. If he admits to fucking up, it’ll remain on his concious.” I said.

“That sounds like a possibility. He never did go to therapy despite my suggestions. It was always ‘I’m too busy’ or ‘Maybe some other day’. I’ll talk to him soon. It’s never too late to open up your feelings.” She said.

I grabbed the box of tissues from the night stand and offered it to her. She took a few and wiped her eyes from tears.

“Come on. Let’s get you out of here before the guards bring in their daily street worker. I don’t think you’d want to hear that.” She said.

Before she walked out, I called her.

“Your highness!” I said. She turned to me. “If you ever feel down, just know that I think you did a great job raising him. It’s not up to you how he handles his pain. But from an outside point, Alaric is a strong man. And it’s all thanks to you.” I told her.

She gave me a huge smile.

“Thank you, Philip. That means a lot.” She said. She started walking again and I stood up to follow her. She walked through the halls, which had similar rooms like the once I was in before. We reached a large metal door that was opened.

A few more minutes of walking and we emerged from a set of double doors that led into a hallway. Now we were definitely in the castle again.

“Alaric! Can you come down here?!” The queen called out. Her powerful voice crescendoed off the walls, making her sound louder than normal.

“Wait? Is he still going to be mad?” I asked the queen.

“I hope not. I think he’s calmed down. But if he does attack, there’s nothing I can do.” She said.

The sound of large heavy footsteps began to be heard. Every step scared me more. I stood up and tried not to show my weakness.

Alaric came out after turning the corner. I was waiting for a nicely covered king with velvets and dressed clothes. Instead, the king wore a white tank top and gray sweats.

His wet hair showed signs that he had just showered. It took me all my strength not to look at his chest and the light hair on his pecs.

“Yeah? What’s going on?” The king asked his mom, not recognizing me.

“I brought Philip with me. Don’t you think we should settle this now?” She asked her son.

The king sighed. “Fine. Sure. Let’s go.” He began walking towards the direction of what I assume is the throne room.

I took a look behind the king. The parts of his back that were exposed showed muscles but also a few large scars. The king of scars that look to be made from melee fighting, such as with swords.

The king took his place on the throne and looked down at me. I clenched my fist to transfer the shaking from my legs to my hands.

I just need to apologize to the king and then get back to work.

My first day didn’t turn out the way I expected.

Chapter Seven

ALARIC

Part of me had forgotten about Philip. I have other things to do all day. Not my fault. I looked down at Philip. Still wearing his attire from earlier.

“Alaric, do you have anything to say to Philip?” Mom asked me.

“Sorry I slashed you with water.” I said nonchalantly.

“That’s not- Come on, Alaric! Just a normal apology.” Mom said.

“I’ll apologize until he apologizes.” I pointed at Philip.

“What? Me? I’m not the one who was hosed down and sent to a dungeon! You should apologize to me! I was just doing my job!” Philip angrily said back.

“This isn’t going anywhere! Look, Alaric, it’s obvious you’re in the wrong. You shouldn’t have abused your power, even if you are the king. Philip is our guest and you should respect him.” Mom told me.

“Maybe if Philip didn’t disobey me, he would be home right now and not freezing from his wet clothes!” I said.

My mom has had enough. Philip looks uncomfortable. Even the guard looks like he wants to go have dinner already.

“Fine!” I groaned. “I’ll apologize.” I turned to Philip. “But just this once!”

“Oh good grief…” The guard next to me said.

“I’m… sorry, Philip. I shouldn’t have… hosed you down and punished you.” I tried not to gag on my own words.

“And what have you learned from this?” Mother asked.

“Seriously?” I whispered to her. “I learned not to ‘abuse’ my power. I’ll be better next time.”

As if.

“Excellent!” Mom said. “Do you accept his apology, Mr. Bellerose?” Mom asked the plebeian.

“Mmm, sure. I accept your apology, King Alaric.” Philip replied. The smirk on his face showed that he was satisfied that the king himself had to apologize to him.

He better not let his ego go up from this. I can still do whatever I want to him with the snap of a finger.

“I’m glad to have witnessed this! Philip, I’ll have a car come by and take you home. You can go get your materials.” Mother said to Philip.

Philip thanked her and was escorted by a guard into the gardens to collect his utensils. I was getting up from my throne and just wanted to get to my room and relax for a while.

“Alaric…” Mother called out for me.

“Yeah?” I asked her.

“I was wondering if you wanted to maybe…” Mom tried saying.

“If I wanted to what?” I asked her.

“Have you tried going to therapy?” She asked. I stood still and turned around slowly to meet her eyes. Mother had a shy look and wasn’t sure how I was going to react.

Therapy?

“Where is this coming from, mother?” I asked her.

“Well-Well I was talking to Philip, and-”

“Philip? Philip?! You talked about me to him? Have you gone insane?” I snapped at my mother.

“This is why you need therapy, Alaric! You need help! I talked to Philip because I trust him! Please. You’ve taken on so much burden since your father died. At least one session.” Mother said to me. I stared at her as she looked back with her motherly look.

“No, I’m perfect the way I am.” I began to walk away from her. “Don’t ever bring this up. We’re done with this therapy talk.” I told my mom before I had the guard open the door and I walked by.

When I entered my room, I went to sit at my desk and began thinking to myself. Why would I need therapy? I’m fine as I am. Sure my father died when I was young. Sure I was forced to take a new leadership role while still a teen. Sure I repressed my sadness because I was on constant display in front of the whole world.

But does that equate to me needing therapy?

And how dare Philip try to tell my mom what she thinks is best for me! Last I remembered, Philip wasn’t around when I was growing up. He has no idea what I had to do and how I reached where I am today. Philip Bellerose is just a gardener, and he needs to remember his place.

When the next day rolled around, I had almost already forgotten about the incident. I got ready and had my crown placed on my head and left for the throne room.

“Morning, your highness.” Mother said, bowing down and looking back up at me.

“Morning.” I replied. She handed me my cup of coffee.

“Can I walk with you?” She asked. I nodded.

I started to walk towards the throne room with my mother in tow.

“So, we have that thing coming up soon, Alaric. Have you planned for it? It’s a big deal.” She said I stopped in my tracks and turned around.

“What thing? I have several things on my mind, you need to be more specific.” I told her.

“The banquet. I emailed you about it this morning. Some of the world leaders and representatives are coming this year for the event.” Mother explained. “It’s a huge thing. Even your father went crazy about it.”

“When is it?” I asked.

“Next month.”

“Next month?!” I said in shock. “Is there even enough time for that?! Doesn’t it usually take at least a year to plan these things?!”

“Relax, Alaric. If you had read my email, you would’ve known that I already have a committee that’s been planning everything. All you need to do is prepare your speech and get your outfit fitted.” Mother said.

“Thank God.” I sighed out.

“However, there is one thing I should mention.” Mom said.

“That is?”

“I was planning on decorating the banquet with flowers. And the person I want to help me with it is…”

“Oh God, mother! Philip? Seriously? You can’t hire someone else? Anyone is better! I don’t want him here! He’s a liability!” I said.

“We’re not doing this again, Alaric. I don’t know why you don’t like Philip. Maybe you do and it’s some angst thing and you actually like him. But no matter the explanation, I need you to be civil with him. I plan on bringing him on board with the planning which means you two will have to see each other.” Mother said to me.

I groaned loudly. “Are you trying to kill me?”

“Of course not, Alaric. If that were to happen, who would take over the country?” Mom began walking while I caught up to her.

“Fine, I’ll try to be civil with him.”

“And you won’t antagonize him?” She asked.

“Nope! I’ll be on my best behavior.” I said. Though, I don’t believe myself.

“Good.” Mother said and turned to look outside the window. “You’re not backing down on your rose ban?” She asked.

“Psh! Why would I? We don’t need them.” I replied.

“Roses are beautiful, Alaric. I know you don’t like them because… it doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t put your personal feelings ahead of the country. Remember, you work for the people. While you can do what you want, it should sometimes be for the people. Just like your father taught you.” She said.

“I know, mother. I know. But my position on roses still stands. The Rose Team has already destroyed most of the roses in the country. I’ve even given reparations for the damages. Trust me, I know what I’m doing.” I said.

“I hope so.” Mom sipped her coffee and looked at the view with me.

I looked downwards into the gardens and saw the gate open. In walked Philip with his small wooden cart of materials.

“Oh, look! Philip is here!” Mom said.

“Do you have a crush on him?” I asked mother.

She got flustered. “Wha- no! I’m still in love with your father. But you must admit, Philip is a handsome fellow.” Mother said.

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure.” I said.

I looked down and watched as Philip got on his knees in front of the bushes of flowers and rolled up his sleeves. I admired his strong back and arms as they flexed whenever they moved. His black hair was tousled and messy on his head. He doesn’t need to fix it because it’ll get messy eventually.

Philip began to trim some of the flowers and would occasionally wipe his forehead of sweat. At some point, he got tired and sat back, leaning against his cart.

He looked up and gave my mother a wave. Mother waved back eagerly. Then his green eyes landed on me. His face grew red and he gave me a sheepish smile.

“Awe, see! He’s waving at you.” Mom said.

I decided to wave back, since we’re going to be seeing each other soon. Might as well start being friendly.

“Hey, mom?” I asked.

“Yes, your highness.” She asked back.

“When do I have to find a match? Aren’t you supposed to find me one?” I asked.

“Your father and I were supposed to find you a match. We had some lined up for you. But, before your father died, he decided that it was too old fashioned.” Mother said.

“Old fashioned?” I asked.

“Mhm. The list we made was full of other girls. But your father realized that the list is biased. It only gives you the option to choose from rich girls. Your father decided not to go through with it in case you might’ve turned out gay or fell in love with a commoner.” Mother explained.

“He said that?”

“Yes. He had an epiphany. He of course wouldn’t have known what way you swing. So he canceled the list. Really, it’s up to you now. You can choose who you want. And I promise I won’t judge.” Mother said.

“That’s good to know.” I said.

I turned back outside and watched Philip sip from his water bottle and run his hand through his sweaty hair. Rather than continue to stare at him, I quickly left the room and walked into my office.

Fuck me. Why was I so entranced by Philip? No, I must be going insane. I’ll just shut up and try not to think about him from here on.

Philip Bellerose is just a florist. And I am a king. We have nothing in common.

Chapter Eight

PHILIP

The lights were set. The tables were perfect. The music vibed the whole room into a soft and sensual atmosphere. And most of all, the flowers were perfectly placed in the right spots. Places that I deemed right and perfect. I couldn’t have asked for a better banquet hall.

“Wow, you outdid yourself, Mr. Bellerose.” Queen Anais said from behind me. I turned around and saw the queen in a light pink robe with curls in her hair. She’s getting ready for the ball.

“I was so afraid because it’s my first time taking on such a big project. But I think it looks good.” I said.

“It sure does. Even if Alaric doesn’t say anything, I’m sure he’ll be awed by everything as well.” The queen patted my shoulder.

“Still no luck on the therapy thing?” I asked.

“He claims he’s fine. But a mother knows best. I’m just trying what I can. Thank you for everything, Philip. Now go change.” The queen said.

“Wait? Change?” I asked her.

“Mhm. You really think I’m not going to let you attend the ball you designed? I’ll have someone escort you and get an outfit fitted for you.” She said. She signaled someone over, a butler.

“How may I help you, your highness?” He asked.

“Please escort Mr Bellerose to the fitting room. There’s someone there waiting for him.” The queen said.

“Of course, your highness. Right this way.” He signaled for me to follow him.

“Go on, Philip. I’ll see you later during the event.” The queen winked at me and began to walk away.

I’m still a bit confused. It’s not common for commoners like me to be invited to such events. It’s not that it’s some sort of classist thing. But because most of these events are for forming connections with other world leaders. So why would a florist need to talk to the King of England?

The butler led me through the castle walls and into a room I haven’t seen. The walls were lined with all types of fabrics and mannequins with all types of outfits were scattered.

“You must be Philip, right?” A voice asked. I turned and saw the silhouette of a woman behind a large piece of pink fabric.

“Y-Yes, ma’am. That’s me.” I replied. The woman walked and I finally got to see her.

She was a fair skinned woman who had deep dark eyes like a hawk. Her curly brown hair was tied up. Her outfit, despite being a designer, was that of a casual look. With gray sweats and a purple plum sweater.

“Great! Excuse me? Can you close the door?” She called the butler who let me in. I turned and saw him walk out and shut the door behind him, leaving me trapped in this room with this woman.

“Hi, I’m Philip. Nice to meet you-”

“I know who you are.” She interrupted me. “Listen, my job here is to get you snatched for the event. So strip.” She demanded.

“Excuse me?” I asked.

“You heard me. Strip. We only have an hour to get you ready. So strip!” She commanded me. I did as told and quickly removed all my clothing.

She measured my body and tried all types of clothes and fabrics on me. Her delicate hands touched my skin and carefully stitched the pieces together. When she was done, she turned me and made me face the mirror.

“Well? What do you think?” She asked.

I stared at myself in the mirror. I wore a dark navy blue blazer and pants. Under my blazer was a white button up with small designs etched onto it. Small patches with special royal markings were on the blazer.

“It’s perfect.” I awed at myself and fixed my hair.

“Good. Now take it off and let’s get you into a shower.” She said. As I was removing my blazer, I turned to her.

“Do you have a rose pin?” I asked. She gave me a smirk.

“You’re bad.” She said and dug in her box and pulled out a red rose pin.

It was time for the party. My hair was “styled” back. In reality, they tried all they could to fix my hair. But it would just revert back into it’s messy black mess. Not even super glue could fix it. With my outfit on and the rose pin placed, I was ready to party.

Since I’m not important, I just entered the ballroom through the kitchen. The decorations all over and the light music from the band let me feel poshy.

I watched on as several people from high profiles walked into the room through the large grand doors. I stood to the side like a wallflower and people-watched.

“And now, for his majesty himself. King Alaric. Accompanied by her highness, Queen Anais.” A voice said loudly. The double doors opened and in walked Alaric. He wore a white outfit. Similar to mine, but his had medals on his coat. He also wore something of a cape, which extended at least four feets behind him. His mother stood next to him, wearing a pink champagne dress.

It pains me to say it, but the king looks handsome.

The king and his mother took their place on their thrones which were on the wall, facing everyone.

A waiter passed by with small biscuits. I reached over and grabbed a handful and ate them. As the music played and people talked, I kept my eyes on the king. Alaric was looking around the room until his eyes landed on me.

His eyes bulged out and he leaned over to his mother and began whispering to her. She also turned and saw me and waved at me. I waved back and avoided looking at the king. His eyes were full of anger. Unless he wants to cause a scene, it’s best he doesn’t try to do anything.

“Do you really think all roses are banned?” I heard a woman say from behind me.

“Merda. I don’t know. I haven’t seen a single one since coming here.” Another male voice said.

“In the US, if we want to do the most harm, you ban guns. Here, I guess it’s roses.” The female said. I leaned my head and looked down at my glass of wine.

“Should we send people here relief packages with rose seeds?” The male said. They both chuckled themselves at their joke.

“Unless you want to go to jail, I advise you don’t make those types of jokes.” A deep familiar voice said. I turned around quickly and saw King Alaric standing there.

“Oh, your majesty. We’re sorry! It was just a joke! You know how they are! Right, Enrico!” The female said.

“Yeah! A joke. Haha!” The male said. The king gave them both a look of annoyance. Almost like they were pests that were bothering him.

“Hmm.” The king groaned. He turned to me, his blue eyes piercing into my would. His eyes trailed down to the rose pin I had. I gave him a huge smile and saw his face get red.

“You like?” I asked, obviously trying to get on his nerves.

The king got closer and leaned into my ear. “You think that’s fucking funny?” He asked.

“Mhm!” I replied.

“I could easily ruin your life, Philip. Don’t test me.” He whispered. I could feel his lips brush against my neck for a split second. That split second alone sent shivers down my spine.

Prick.

He turned away and went to talk to several high profile politicians. He shook hands with the President of the United States as the two exchanged a few words. The king and him talked for a few minutes until the king excused himself to talk to someone else.

The waiter passed by and I took a glass of champagne and drank it down fast.

“Wait!” I called him. He turned and I placed the empty glass on his tray and grabbed another. “Thanks.” I said. He walked off as I drank the next glass.

I waited for a while for the alcohol to settle in. Once I felt the buzz set in, I walked over to the two people who had been reprimanded earlier by the king.

“Hey you two!” I said. They both turned to me.

“Ciao! Nice to meet you!” The man who’s name I vaguely remember is Enrico. He extended his hand but I instead pulled him into a hug.

“Nice to meet you, Enrico! And who is this?” I asked towards the woman. She pushed her hair back and blushed.

“Anna. My name is Anna.” She said. I softly grabbed her hand and kissed it.

“Pleasure to meet you, Anna.” I said. The alcohol is definitely giving me courage. I noticed that both Enrico and Anna wore flag pins. Anna had an American flag pin and Enrico had an Italian flag pin.

“I assume you’re from here, right?” Anna asked.

“Of course. My name is Philip Bellerose. The royal family’s gardener. I decorated this place!” I bragged to these strangers.

“Really? It’s amazing! But, I have a question, Phil.” Enrico said.

“I’m all ears.” I replied and let out a small burp.

“Is it true that roses are, like, completely gone?” He asked.

“Uh huh! All gone! The only rose within the vicinity is my pin, see?” I showed them my rose pin.

“Back in the states, we all wonder if they were truly gone or if it was some sort of publicity stunt. Now I know.” Anna said.

“So you work for the king. How is that?” Enrico asked.

I proceeded to explain to them the story of my first day on the job and the water hose incident. Both the American and Italian were listening closely and I could feel other people listening closely.

“Wow! I can’t believe he would actually do that.” Anna said.

“He looks all high and mighty. But trust. I’ve been working for him for a few weeks. I’ve never met a more immature person.” I said. People around me laughed. A waiter passed by and I chugged down another glass of champagne.

More buzz for me.

“And are you wearing that pin as a form of retaliation?” I was asked.

“Yup! The law bands natural roses. But in no way does it ever ban any form of symbols or roses.” I replied.

“That sounds genius.” Anna replied.

We all chuckled and I told some jokes here and there and entertained the guests. The alcohol was now really getting to me.

As the night progressed, I got a little more tipsy. I was full blown stumbling around and holding onto people to not fall down. I was a complete mess.

When I turned to see Alaric, who was red in the face while watching me, I knew my plan had worked.

I had embarrassed the king at his own event.

Chapter Nine

A

LARIC

I knew when my mother invited Philip that it would be a disaster. You don’t put lipstick on a pig and expect it to be beautiful. And you don’t put a person like Philip with others like me and expect him to act with class. It’s impossible to make some out to be that they aren’t.

And my mother was naive enough to believe Philip would act professionally.

“Alaric.” Mother called me. I excused myself from the representative from Trindad and Tobago and went to go to her.

“Yes, mother?” I asked.

“We have a bit of a situation.” She said. I could see her trying not to make it seem bad by shielding her face.

“Who is it?” I asked, pinching the bridge of my nose between my fingers.

“It’s Philip.” She said. I groaned loudly.

“What has he done?” I asked.

“He sort of got a little too drunk.” She replied.

“Shove him in a broom closet. We’ll do with him later.” I said.

Truth is, Philip should be the last thing on my mind right now. But I’ll admit. He’s gotten my attention. First it was with how he was dressed. It was obvious that the tailor had gotten him fixed up in the best way. And then there was his pin. Very clever of him to use a rose pin instead of an actual rose.

“I’ll have him taken to the kitchen bathroom.” Mother said. She signaled a guard over and told him what to do.

I went up on my throne and got the attention of everyone. It was time for my speech that I had been preparing for.

I cleared my throat.

“Ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for attending this year’s royal function. As king, it is my duty to make sure you all have a splendid evening.”

I turned and saw the guard my mother had talked to dragging a drunk Philip away while everyone was distracted.

“Even though I’ve only been in this position for a year at most, I’ve quickly come to learn what it means to be a true leader. It hasn’t been an easy process. But I have people such as my mother, the former queen, and my father, who passed away several years ago, to thank for their contributions in helping me to where I am. I’ve definitely needed some areas of improvement. And I’ve gladly been able to adapt. As my father once said, ‘Be the man who takes the high road.’ It’s a motto I live by everyday. Thank you all for your attendance. I look forward to speaking with everyone here before the night ends. Thank you.” I finished my speech.

Claps rang through the hall and I bowed to everyone. I descended the stairs and shook the hands of several people in the room and had some quick chatter with them.

When the night began to end and most of the people had left to either return to their countries or their hotels, I was left with the few remaining guests. Most of which were socialites and the rest were drunks who had no class.

Kind of like a certain florist…

“Alaric!” Mom called me. “Can you do me a favor?” She asked.

“Mhm. Sure.” I said.

“Can you take Philip-”

“No! No way in hell!” I quickly said.

“Please! Most of the guards were given the day off and the head guards are patrolling the grounds. Just take Philip to a room and let him stay the night.” Mom said.

“Can’t we just throw him against the sidewalk and let him find his way home? Why do we have to waste a room for him?” I asked.

“He’s my friend, Alaric! I consider him one! Please? Just this one time?” Mother asked. She had a face that never let me say no.

“Fine!” I groaned loudly. “Just this one time! Where is he?” I asked.

“Oh thank you! He’s in the kitchen. I’m sure he’s sobered up by now. Just take him to his room and let him spend the night.” Mother quickly turned her attention to a representative from Germany who had been spending the night drinking.

I turned and began walking to the kitchen while muttering to myself.

Can’t believe I have to take an actual full grown adult to their room and put them to bed. This is child behavior. I shouldn’t even be forced to do this. To be fair, no one forced me. Mother asked and I agreed. I can only blame myself.

I entered the large kitchen. It was mostly empty since the cooks were gone. Only the night cleaning crew was in.

“Excuse me? Do you know where Philip is?” I asked the guy mopping the floor.

“The fellow with the messy hair? He’s over there.” He pointed to the pantry. I walked over there and saw Philip looking up at the snacks we have.

“Philip.” I called to him. He didn’t turn around.

“So many choices.” He said.

“And none are for you. Let’s go. It’s bedtime.” I tugged on his sleeve.

“Please, your highness! Just a bag of Goldfish! Please!?” He pleaded. I gave in and reached up to grab him a bag and handed it to him.

“Now can we go?” I asked.

“Mhm!” He said with a mouthful of food. I tugged on him while he followed behind aimlessly. We went through the halls until I found the room I wanted to give him. It’s located at the end of the southern wing. In comparison, my room is on the end of the northern wing.

I managed to drag Philip into his room and threw him onto his bed.

“Sleep. And get out in the morning. You’ve overstayed your welcome.” I said.

I walked out but could hear him getting off the bed.

“Asshole!” He loudly said to me. I stopped in my tracks and turned around to see Philip standing while eyeing me down.

“What did you say?” I asked him as I approached him.

“You’re an asshole! I’ve ignored you for the past few weeks because I know how fragile your ego is! But even that is not enough? Just put your pride aside and let me live! Damn!” He groaned.

“I’ve set boundaries between us! We stay away from each other! And you somehow manage to keep being in my life! I would fire you if you worked for me!” I said back.

“You wouldn’t fire me! It’s like you’re obsessed with me! I saw how you were looking at me earlier. I can bet what was on your mind.” Philip took a step closer to me.

I stepped closer too. But I only did it to point out our height difference.

“Watch what you say, Philip. And no, I’m not obsessed with you. But I’m guessing you’re obsessed with me.” I said.

Philip had a moment of anger but that went away. Instead, a sly smile came on his face.

“Are you sure?” He asked.

“You’re annoying. You’re a nuisance. How could I ever be obsessed with you?” I asked.

Philip’s hand began to run up my thigh. “It seems like you’re hiding your true feelings, your highness.” He whispered in my ear.

“Fuck off, you peasant!” I should have pushed his hand away. But I was frozen in shock. That, or could I possibly actually like what he was doing.

“Come on, your highness. You’re a ball of stress that needs to be relieved. I know some ways I can help.” He said.

His tongue licked my neck, making me shiver upon his touch.

Fuck me.

Why was I hard? I could feel my own erection hard. His hands traced upwards until he gripped me tightly. I groaned and leaned forward into his neck.

“That’s right. You need this, Alaric. You just didn’t know it.” He said. He started to rub his hands on my erection.

“Fuck! S-Stop! I order you… to!” I panted out.

“What? I didn’t hear that, your highness.” He began to rub my erection harder.

“I said… stop!” I was moaning into his neck. My hands went to grab his ass. My face was most likely red. And my hair was messy.

“I don’t think you want me to stop.” He grunted in my ear. I could feel his right hand starting to unbuckle my belt and slip his hand under my briefs. He gripped my dick in his warm hands.

“Fuck!” I groaned out. His hand felt amazing.

“Wow. I didn’t know you were this hung.” He said. His finger touched my tip and traced around it.

He started to jerk me off in my pants. He’s an expert at this. He knows what he’s doing. Like he’s done this before. While he’s experienced, I’m not. I’ve only had my hand. Now here I was, with another guy, as he rubbed me and I let him.

“Philip!” I groaned out.

“Are you going to finish, your highness?” Philip asked.

“Philip! Please!” I grunted.

“Do you want me to stop?” He asked.

“No! Faster!” I grunted.

“Ask me.” He said.

“Can you please go faster? Please?” I asked while gasping for breath.

“No. Ask me like I’m the king.” He said.

“Please, Philip! Please go faster! Please!” I said louder.

“As you wish.” He jerked me off faster. I was grabbing his ass in my hands and fondling him.

Finally, I came in my pants and was gasping for my breath. I hadn’t noticed that I had bitten Philip’s collar. I could hear Philip also gasping for air. He removed his hand from my pants and we both looked at his hand with white stuff on it.

“Woah…” He said. He then began to fall and collapsed onto the bed. I was standing there and quickly buckled my pants back up. I tucked my shirt back in and began to race towards the door.

I took one last look at Philip. As he passed out with my cum on his hands and a bag of Goldfish crackers on his left.

I left his room and closed the door behind me. I walked back to my room and entered it.

After I had closed the door and curtains, I took off all my clothes and layed on my bed naked. This feeling. Why did it feel so good? Why did I want more? And why was Philip the one who made me feel like this?

My feelings were all over the place. I thought I hated Philip. He annoys me. And he somehow managed to make me feel something I haven’t felt before. He pushed the right button.

I saw myself begin to harden once again. It usually takes me a while to get it up after finishing. Just thinking about Philip and his magical hand made me get excited again.

This will be a problem for tomorrow.

Tonight, I’m going to sleep and hoping it was all a dream. But part of me doesn’t want it to be a dream. So maybe I can have some more of that pleasure I felt.

Chapter Ten

PHILIP

My head was hurting, most likely from the alcohol I had drank last night. The last thing I could remember was looking at a wall full of snacks. But even then, that was a hazy memory. Why was I remembering snacks? Was I still in the castle?

I began to stand up and was expecting myself to be in my small apartment. However, I saw something else.

“When did I ever get chiffon curtains?” I asked myself. I scanned the room and knew that this wasn’t my room. My apartment isn’t this elaborate. It’s too fancy. This looks like I’m in…

…the castle.

I quickly sat up and began to panic. I was still wearing my attire from last night. I looked to my left and saw a bag of crackers there. But I don’t remember eating that. My right hand felt weird. When I looked at it, I saw some sort of crust on it. I brought my hand to inspect it.

It’s not food. Nor is it any sort of stain. It almost looks like dried snot. Then it hit me. I know what it is.

“Oh, ew! What the fuck!” I yelled. Who the fuck did I jerk off!! I unbuckled my pants and checked the inside of my briefs. There isn’t anything there. No crust or anything. So that confirms it’s not mine.

Despite how comfortable the bed was, I needed to get out of here. First, I looked around and saw a bathroom in the room. I walked in there and washed my hands in the sink. I slipped on my shoes and walked to the door. The hallway was empty. I exited the room, making sure not to make too much noise.

The light from the morning sun illuminated the halls. Strangely, I feel safe here. If given the choice, I would love to live here. I found the spiral stairs and descended them to reach the foyer.

I can’t exit through the front entrance. It’s like a walk of shame. Luckily, my phone, which managed to stay in my pocket, has my ID. All I have to do is scan it and exit through the back entrance of the kitchen.

It’s foolproof.

And plus, I could get some breakfast. Staff have the option to get food from the kitchen for all their meals and snacks.

As I reached the kitchen, which was mostly empty, I walked in and began to walk slyly. I found the pantry that I had remembered earlier. I entered it and began to search for something to eat. Finally, I decided on a packet of mochi.

“Oh shit!” I yelled when I entered the kitchen and saw the king sitting on the counter.

“Good morning to you too.” He said. I took in his outfit. He wore a blue t-shirt with his name stitched on his right chest. His pajama pants, which were dark blue, had little crowns on them. And he had on black slippers.

Enough of me gawking at him.

“Uh, good morning, your highness.” I bowed then stood back up.

“What you got there?” He asked. I saw him eat a biscuit, similar looking to the one we once had a squabble over.

“I just got myself a snack. It’s fine, right?” I asked him. He looked at me, examining every crevice on my face and every wrinkle on my clothes.

“It’s fine.” He said. A bit anticlimactic especially after he observed me to my core.

“If you don’t mind me asking…”

“I do.” He said.

“What happened last night? I don’t remember walking to a random room.” I said.

He had a look of relief wash over him. That’s not a good sign.

“You don’t remember anything?” The king asked.

I shook my head. “Nothing. How did I get to that room?” I asked the king.

“I dragged you there.” He said.

“Oh, really? Well, sorry for my unprofessionalism. It wasn’t okay for me to get drunk like that. Especially at such a formal event with your majesty present.” I said, hiding my humiliation.

“What else do you remember from that night?” The king asked.

Why does this feel like an interrogation?

“Let’s see. I remember drinking and having fun with the American and Italian representatives. Then I remember the pantry. And that’s it. I got nothing.” I said. He huffed.

“So, nothing at all? Like, nothing that you did?” He asked, sounding more impatient.

“Nope! Nothing! If I could remember, I’d tell you.” I said. He nodded and looked down at his lap. A red blush came on his face. Is the king… blushing?

“You should get home. You have work tomorrow.” The king said.

“I’m truly sorry for any disruptions I caused at the event last night. It was never my intention to get drunk like that. I promise, I’ll make it up to you.” I bowed my head and waited for him to say something.

“I-It’s fine! Really! Just go home, please.” The king said. I peaked up and saw the king had the plate of biscuits on his lap, covering his crotch. His fists were red, he was clutching his hands tightly. He looks tense.

“Are you okay, your highness? You look like you need to relieve some stress?” I asked. The king started choking on his biscuit. I quickly realized he was choking his food. “Quick! Stand up!” I told him.

Alaric’s face was red. I stood behind him and performed the Heimlich maneuver on him. My hands were grasped at his torso and I gripped him until the food was dislodged from his throat. The king was coughing as I handed him a bottle of water.

“Are you okay, your highness?!” I urgently asked. I placed my hand on his back and patted it. When the king regained his composure, he stood tall once again and turned to me.

“You- You saved me.” He said in shock.

“Of course I would. I’m not going to let a fucking biscuit kill you.” I replied. The king was still in disbelief. His face slowly returned to his fair skin tone. His hair, which was already messy, was an even bigger mess now.

I reached up and ran my hand through his hair, slicking it back. The king stood there, not saying anything. He just watched my face as I fixed his hair for him. His soft curls ran through my fingers like silk.

“There,” I said in a lower tone. “Your hair is fixed.”

The king stared into my eyes. I’ve never seen the king like this before. A few weeks ago, he would’ve shot himself in the face before ever being this close to me. Now, we’re playing a war with our eyes.

“Are you sure you remember nothing from last night?” He once again asked.

I chuckled. “No, your highness. Like I told you, I don’t remember anything.” I said.

“Good. That’s good.” He said in a lower tone.

We kept our eye contact. His blue eyes were no longer staring daggers at me. Rather, this look is one of a different emotion. Not a negative one. But something more positive. It feels alien. But at the same time, it looks so natural on his face.

Might I dare say, he looks even sexier with this face.

“Is there something I should be remembering?” I asked the king.

“What do you think?” He asked, taking a step forward towards me. I stepped back, not noticing that I was already close to the wall. My back hit the wall as I let out a grunt.

“I think that there’s something you’re not telling me, your highness. Did I do anything last night?” I asked with a smirk. He blushed.

Gotcha!

“You’re a tease, Philip. You know that, right?” He asked. He took another step towards me. He stood four inches taller than me. From farther away, he doesn’t seem that threatening. But up close, he looks like he’s several feet taller than me. His royal status doesn’t help with it at all.

“What are you talking about?” I asked nervously.

“Thank God you don’t remember anything. That would screw everything up.” He said. He placed both of his hands on my sides on the wall. He’s caged me in.

“Your highness?” I asked him. He had hunger in his eyes. He stared into my soul. He licked his lips while never looking away.

“Something that people don’t know is that I only like men.” The king told me.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked the king.

“You can relate, right? Didn’t you seduce one of my royal officials? That must mean you also like men.” The king said.

“Y-Yes. I do, your highness. That’s not a problem, right?” I asked.

“You tell me.” He said. He took another step forward, this time, his body was touching mine. I could feel his crotch. He was hard. He began to slowly grind himself on me.

“Shouldn’t I be leaving?” I asked.

“Why go now? It’s still early.” He asked, still gyrating himself on me.

“I don’t smell good! I probably smell like booze right now.” I said.

“I don’t mind.” He said. He kept grinding himself on me. I felt myself get hard too and grinded against him back. We were both synchronized in our movements.

What the hell are we doing? This isn’t normal. What happened last night where we are now dry humping? I need to remember what I did. It’s obvious that I did something to him that would elicit him to act this way. Before, the king wouldn’t even look my way. Now, he’s humping my leg like it’s any other day.

King Alaric began thrusting even faster as I followed him along. We both reached our climax and were moaning while catching our breath. He actually finished on me. I made him finish.

The king was staring into my eyes. His face was red and he was sweating lightly. He leaned down and planted a kiss on my lips. He was aggressive with the kiss. Like he hasn’t kissed anyone before. He slipped his tongue into my mouth and dominated me easily. His right hand came up and cupped my cheek.

He didn’t let me go for a few seconds. I wanted to push him away and ask him what he was doing. Why was he all the sudden so touchy with me? But I just wanted to savor this moment. Because despite who he is, this kiss feels amazing.

After the kiss slowed down, he pulled away from me. Strings of saliva were attaching our lips together. I was panting for air while he looked at me.

“Your highness?” I asked.

The sound of the kitchen door opening alerted us. The king stepped away from me quickly and went to the counter where he stuffed a biscuit in his mouth. He turned away from me and didn’t look at me.

The cooks who would prepare the breakfast all walked in and were chattering with each other. They all bowed to the king when they saw him eating his biscuits.

I bent down and picked up my box of mochi and ran out the exit, not daring to look back. I hid my face because I felt like I was being judged.

When I made it to the outside of the grounds, I turned and gave one last look at the castle before walking into the sidewalk. I opened the box of mochi and chewed on one. I could still feel the king’s bulge, rubbing on my leg. Even in public, I felt myself getting turned on. I looked around but no one seemed to care.

I sat on a bench and collected my thoughts. This is going to change the next time I see the king. Which according to my schedule, is tomorrow. Would it be awkward or would he- I pray- forget about what he did?

Why me? Out of all the people he could’ve done it with, even his own hand, he decided to rub against me! I’m just a fucking florist. The castle’s gardener. Now I’m in some sort of erotic bubble with the king.

Because I’m weird, I held up my hand and tried to imagine how thick the king’s dick was in my hands. He was hung, no doubt. He could easily destroy someone with that.

A quick flash went through me. Then it hit me. What I did last night.

I remembered me, holding the king’s dick in my hands, jerking him off. I remember him moaning. I remember him pleading for me to go faster. I remember him finishing in my hands.

“OH GOD!” I yelled, standing up and getting the attention of everyone around me.

I jerked off the fucking king!! King Alaric came on my hands!! He begged me!!

I quickly ran home, not caring about how people were going to look at me. I reached my floral shop and ran inside. Luckily, Bram has already opened the shop. I ran in and saw him on the counter.

“Hej fætter! Hvordan var festen? (Hey, cousin! How was the party?)” Bram asked. I fell on the floor and hugged my knees to my chest.

‘No way! No way! No fucking way! Fuck me! Fuck me! Fuck fuck fuck fuck!’ I muttered in my head.

“Så slemt, hva’? (That bad, huh?)” Bram chuckled.

I sat on the floor, rocking back and forth, just wanting the earth to swallow me whole right now.

I’m the king’s secret whore! I didn’t sign up for this!

Chapter Eleven

ALARIC

The next few weeks in the castle had an awkward aura. Whenever Philip was around, I would excuse myself out of the room. If he was in the gardens, I was inside. If he was in the castle, I was out doing business. And it doesn’t help that my mom has been buddying up with Philip. Meaning sometimes he’ll be in her room.

My mother hasn’t been blind to this. She pointed out our weird tension. At first, she thought that we were just ignoring each other because we don’t get along. But slowly, I think her opinion is changing. I see her glancing at both of us sometimes, like the pieces are falling together in her head.

Ever since our kiss, I’ve been wondering what it means to me. I never wanted to settle down with someone. It just never appealed to me. I was fine with ruling the country on my own. But Philip’s kiss still tingles my lips. I catch myself touching my lips and feeling an absence of his lips.

Restless nights have left me needing relief. I’ve been having urges that I haven’t had since I was a young teen. I refuse to give into temptation. However, when I picture Philip’s hand, my urges get stronger.

And a more recent thing that I’ve seen myself do is wait for Philip to arrive at the castle. Sometimes, I’ll wake up early and look out my window, waiting for Philip to walk into the courtyard. Other times, I’ll be in the dining room and look through the window of the kitchen and see him enter through the back.

I haven’t been sure of Philip himself and how he feels about us. He himself seems to be trying to ignore me. I’m guessing he’s figured out what we did the night of the ball.

“Your highness!” My advisor called out to me.

“Hmm? Yes?” I asked. I was looking outside and watching the clouds go by. July is here already.

“Do you care about the status of your cousin?” He asked.

“Screw that brat. Can we end this? I need to be somewhere.” I said. My advisor huffed. He knows he can send me an email about this and make his job easier. I think he likes that he gets to talk face-to-face with the king.

“Sure. I’ll send over the rest.” He said. I shut my book and got up and went to find my mother.

I walked to her room and heard her giggling in there. I knocked on the door and walked in without waiting to see if she wanted me in or not.

“Mom?” I asked. There was my mom, sitting on her tea-table set with none other than Philip with her. I turned away and acted like I was interested in something else.

“Oh, Alaric. I’m having tea with Philip. Want to join us?” She asked.

An idea popped up. It’s time I face the music. No more beating around the bush. Just look him in the eye.

“Sure.” I replied. Philip looked shocked and scooted over. Mother pulled out a chair for me and allowed me to sit.

This isn’t awkward. Having tea with the guy I haven’t been able to get my mind off of.

“So, Philip. I heard your cousin is in town. How is he?” Mother asked.

Philip set his tea down. He made eye contact with me and then quickly turned to face my mother. “He’s doing good. It took him a while to get the hang of taking over the shop.” He replied.

“You should invite him over sometime.” Mother said.

“Mom, this isn’t a hostel. You can’t invite people over.” I told her.

“Honey, I can do whatever I want.” She said. I rolled my eyes and drank my tea.

There was an awkward silence in the room. All you could hear was the porcelain cups and metal utensils as we dug into our cakes. I reached out my foot and placed his near Philip’s foot.

Now’s my time to go in.

“I was reading the news from the Americas.” Mother said, breaking the silence. “They’re debating on whether gay marriage should remain legal or leave it up to the states.” She said.

“Not the first time the Americans decided to take a step backwards.” I replied.

“Thank goodness we have it codified in our Constitution. Philip, did you know we legalized same-sex marriage 40 years before the Netherlands. Everyone thinks they were the first. But in fact, they actually wrote word-for-word their law from ours.” Mother said.

“No, I didn’t know. Seems like the royal family has always been inclusive.” Philip said.

“You’re damn right. My husband, the former king, was there when his father wrote the law. He did it because his brother was a homesexual himself and wanted to marry his true love. It was a beautiful day.” Mother said.

“I hope to marry someone that’s willing to change the law for me.” Philip said.

“So that’s why things like that are so important. People should be allowed to be happy.” Mother said. “Do you have anyone in mind, Philip?” Mom asked him.

Philip looked like he didn’t want to say anything. I leaned back in my chair and watched him. My leg began to get closer to his and landed on his legs too.

“I don’t know. Not that I’m not looking. But with work and maintaining the gardens, it’s a lot.” He said.

“Just hope you find someone soon. Same goes for you Alaric. I want to attend your wedding. You’re lucky we no longer have forced marriages.” Mom said.

“Yeah, lucky me.” I said.

“Oh, I need to leave quickly. The macarons are done. I’ll be right back. You two, don’t fight this time.” She said. She stood up and patted herself down and walked out of the room, leaving me alone with Philip.

As soon as the door closed, I calmed myself down and tried not to scream. I needed to maintain my calm aura around Philip. He can’t see me all flustered.

I kept my leg next to his leg, slowly rubbing him.

“Good day, your highness!” Philip said.

“Mhm.” I replied. I stared into his eyes, as he avoided mine.

Seeing his face all red is actually a bit… endearing. Something about him just makes me want to pick him up and do whatever I want to him.

“Is the tea good?” He asked.

“It’s good.” I replied. I crossed my arms over my chest. “How are the calla lilies?” I asked him.

“They’re good. Growing in time for summer.” He said.

I began to run my leg up his.

“We haven’t spoken in a while.” I said.

“I figured you wouldn’t want to.” He said, opening the collar of his shirt.

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because of… you know.” He alluded but I wanted to hear him say it.

“I don’t remember. Would you remind me?” I asked him. His face turned even more red.

“You highness. You know what I’m talking about. Please don’t make me say it.” He said. I stared at his pink lips. Those lips that I have been craving for so long. I’ve forgotten why they taste. All I know is that it was magical.

And I need more.

“Don’t act like you didn’t like it.” I said.

“What?” He asked.

“Philip Bellerose. You keep acting so oblivious. I know you remember everything. And if you were wondering, I liked it.” I told him.

“This conversation isn’t appropriate, your highness.” He stuttered out.

“Not appropriate? There’s a lot that you have done that isn’t appropriate. I don’t need to remind you…” My foot inched onto his crotch. I pressed my foot down lightly. He looked down and started sweating. “… but you’re quite the pervert.”

“Your highness. I think we should end this right now.” Philip said.

“End what? This conversation or this…?” My foot pressed even harder on his dick. I could feel him getting hard in his pants. “I don’t think you want this to end. Do you?” I asked, now rubbing my foot across his crotch.

Philip began moaning. His fingers were grabbing onto the mantle of the table, leaving wrinkles on the pristine fabric.

“So? Still don’t want to admit you liked it?” I asked.

“Fuck!” He muttered. “Sir, please stop!” He muttered. Though, his face of pleasure told me otherwise.

“Alright then.” I said, pulling my foot away. I sat back up and sipped on my tea like nothing happened.

Philip sat confused. I could tell he was upset and probably feeling upset now that he has blue-balls. But I just acted like nothing had happened.

“Wha- Your highness!” He pleaded.

“Yes, Philip?” I asked him.

He wants to say it.

“I- I…” He said.

“You what?” I asked.

“Fine…” He groaned. “I liked it.” He muttered. “I liked it so much. I still think about it every day.” He finally admitted.

“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” I asked him. “Now, where were we?” I asked.

I stood up and leaned across the table. My hand reached Philip’s collar and I grabbed him and pulled him forward. I forced him to kiss me and immediately attacked his mouth with my lips and tongue.

Philip, confused, just sat there and let me have my way. Only after a few seconds did everything register and he began to kiss me back. I kept my grip on his collar tightly, refusing to let go. Philip’s hands were on my face, touching everything.

I pulled him away and stared at him. “I remember everything.” He muttered.

I stood up and dragged Philip behind me. I pinned him against the wall as he let out a grunt. My hands grabbed his hands and pinned them above his head. Philip was breathing hard.

“I don’t know why you intrigue me so much,” I said. “But something about you just drives me insane.” I brought my face close to his.

“Fuck!” He groaned as my hand reached down to cup his hard dick.

“I knew you’d like that.” I said, rubbing him harder and harder.

“Don’t stop!” He moaned out.

“I don’t plan to.” I said. I stroked him harder and continued to kiss him. He bit my lip, which made it all more erotic.

My hands found the edge of his pants. I slipped my hands under his pants and found his hot dick. My hands gripped his shaft and began tugging on it. Philip’s moans got louder. I once again began kissing him to shush him.

“Alaric!” He moaned out.

“Uh-uh. That’s not how you address me.” I said.

“Your highness!” He moaned out. “Faster…” He muttered.

“As you wish.” I replied, stroking him even faster.

Philip climaxed onto my hands. He was gripping my back and refusing to let go of me. We were both panting in each other’s faces, reeling for the high we just fell from. I stared into Philip’s green eyes, and was once again captivated by him.

Philip placed a simple kiss on my cheek. Despite us kissing erratically and getting each other off, this simple kiss felt endearing and personal. Past encounters have mainly been forwarded by lust. But this kiss… this one kiss… it just felt right.

“Your highness?” Philip asked. I lifted his face for him to look at me.

“Yes, Philip?” I asked him.

“What does this mean?” He asked. I slowly removed my hand from his pants. I stared into his eyes as he waited for my response.

“I-I don’t know.” I replied.

“If it’s just something for you to relieve some stress, I want to know in advance.” He said.

“Because?” I asked.

“Just to set boundaries.” He said.

Though, I think this is more.

“Philip…” I said. “I… I think I-” The bedroom door opened and my mother walked in. I quickly split away from Philip and sat at the table, while Philip kept standing at the wall where I had just violated him.

“Sorry I took so long. What’s going on? Why are you against the wall, Philip?” Mom asked.

I grabbed a napkin and wiped my hand clean.

“I was doing wall sits!” Philip blurted out.

I pulled out my phone and acted like I wasn’t interested in what they were talking about. I checked my email and saw the message from my advisor. I read it and quickly got up.

“What’s wrong, Alaric?” Mom asked.

“Mom. We have to go. They found my cousin. He’s having his coronation soon.” I said.

“Finally. I’ll pack. Sorry, Philip. But we’ll have to cut our time short.” Mom said.

Philip nodded. “I understand. I’ll just see my way out.” He said. He bowed to me then my mother. As he walked to the door, he turned and gave me one final look. I winked at him, and he quickly turned away and left the room.

“So, is it true he was in America?” Mother asked me. I looked down at the napkin I had used, which still has Philip’s fluids.

“Mhm.” I replied.

My thoughts lingered back to Philip. This is more than just a way to get my rocks off. No, I think I’m falling for the florist.

Chapter Twelve

PHILIP

King Alaric and the former Queen Anais have been gone for two weeks. They’re off at someone’s coronations. Anais entrusted me to keep the gardens in pristine condition. Easy enough job to do. And since they aren’t here, I can easily return home and make sure the black market roses are up to good condition.

Ever since the king kissed me, I haven’t been able to get him out of my head. Most of my thoughts all revolve around him and everything about him. For example, I’ve found myself entranced by his eyebrows. Eyebrows! I’ve never thought of someone’s eyebrows as sexy. But his, for some reason, are!

Had you asked me a month ago what I thought of the king, I probably would’ve said a few unfavorable words. But now, if you ask me, I’d probably not even be able to speak a cohesive sentence.

My thoughts are confusing. And I don’t want to know what happens if I figure them out.

The blazing sun was burning on my back as I labored away at the patch of poppies that needed tending. I honestly love my job. Being a florist was nice, but here, I have more freedom. If I want to experiment with something new, all I need to do is ask the queen. Who, at this point, is sort of like my best friend.

There’s so much space here. Acres upon acres of land that is all to my disposal. There’s things I can do here that will make this place even better. Once the poppies were fixed, I grabbed my bag of tools and began walking.

As I looked around the gardens, I came across a place that I normally ignore. A place that’s infamous for the wrong reasons. The burnt roses. Ground zero for the war of roses.

Since no one was around, I decided to look at the burnt flowers. I crouched down and gently tried to pick up a burnt leaf. However, the weak remains fell into my hand. I squished it as the once verdant leaf crumbled into nothing but ashes in my palm.

The whole place was burnt. No sign of a rose petal or stem or thorn was anywhere to be spotted. I could still remember when the pictures came out of King Alaric welding a blowtorch and burning everything down. It was truly a heartbreaking day.

I walked into the scorched soil and wandered around, looking at the charred plants. I reached the end of the patch and looked around.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something… green. Seeing as most of this place is burnt, this green quickly caught my eye. I walked over and crouched down.

There, among the piles of ashes, was a growing rose stem growing from the ground. It looked like it had been growing for some time. It most likely was able to thrive off of rain water and the nutrients from the burnt plants around it. I removed some of the ashes and cleared the place for the newborn.

Despite all his attempts, King Alaric failed to eradicate roses. Even in his own backyard, roses managed to thrive.

From now on, I’ll make it my mission to make sure this rose is able to grow fully. Its safety is my top priority.

A few days later, the king came back early. They were supposed to be gone for a month but now they’re here. I walked up and bowed down in front of his highness.

“Welcome back, your highness.” I said. I slowly looked up and saw the king staring at me with a smirk. I wonder if our makeout session has been on his mind.

“I’ll be in my room.” The king said. He turned and walked away, not without giving me a wink. Yep, he remembers. I turned to the queen.

“Why are you guys home early?” I asked her.

“Oh, his cousin kind of went on a rendezvous and went to go see someone in America.” She replied. “How have you been?” She asked.

“Oh, me? I’ve been good. Why?” I asked her.

“I just figured you’d miss the king.” She replied.

“Well, of course I missed him. Me and the rest of the country.” I replied, feeling a drop of sweat rolling down my forehead.

“I’ll be off. I have to handle some things in the centre.” She said. “Look after Alaric, please?” She asked.

“Sure.” I replied. She patted my back and walked away.

I have no idea what she means by looking after the king. Does she want me to give him a foot massage? Or bring him tea? Honestly, being around Alaric makes me shake. Our previous encounters have all been heated.

The gardens are the place where I can feel relaxed and away from the king and the control he’s been putting on me. I walked around the gardens and found a bird fountain that needed tending. I approached it and began to examine everything.

As I reached up to grab something from the top of the fountain, I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders. I tried turning around but the person who held me thrusted their body forward and made me slam into the fountain.

“What are you-” I said until a pair of lips were on my ear.

“Calm down, Philip.” The king said. “Just stand still.” He said. He let go of my shoulder and brought his right hand forward until they met the top of my pants.

“Your highness! People will see!” I said.

“I ordered the guards away. No one will see us.” The king’s deep voice said in my ear. I began shivering as the king’s rough hands made their way into my pants and through my boxers. His warm hands grabbed my hard-on and began tugging it.

“Alaric!” I gasped.

“Calm down.” He breathed heavily. “I know you want this.” He said.

The frightening part was, I did want it. I’d been missing his touch for so long. No way I’m telling him to back off. Even if it’s in the gardens, I’ll let him have his way.

“Already excited, are we?” The king teasingly asked.

“Fuck yeah!” I moaned out as he began to stroke me softly.

“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you.” The king said, letting a moment of sincerity through. I was shocked that he missed me. Have I been on his mind?

Alaric’s hand stroked me with his right hand. I then felt him begin to lower my pants from behind me. He lowered my pants and boxers, leaving my ass exposed to him.

“Your highness?” I asked, turning around to face him.

“Just relax. I’ll be quick.” The king said. I stared at his icy blue eyes, which told me that he needed more of me. His eyes sent shivers through my body.

Alaric removed his hand from my pants and brought his hand to my mouth.

“Suck.” He said. I put some of his fingers in my mouth, sucking on his fingers. He removed his fingers when they were wet enough and brought them to my behind. “Take a deep breath.” He warned me as his fingers made their way to my behind.

I felt him press him, my saliva being a lubricant. The king used one finger first, then added another. When I was loose enough, I heard the king begin to lower his own pants.

“I’m going in.” The king grunted. He placed his hand on the lower part of my back and made me lean forward into the fountain.

Alaric’s large hard-on was on my hole, and he eased himself in. My hands gripped the edge of the fountain as he entered me slowly. After letting me get adjusted to his size, the king began thrusting into me slowly. I moaned as his size filled me up.

“How’s that feel?!” The king asked, grunting as he thrusted into me.

“Faster!” I moaned out. He kept thrusting and didn’t stop.

One of his free hands went down to my dick and began to jerk me off. The pleasure from my dick and ass drove me to the edge. I quickly came in his hand and the king also began to grunt faster. He finished inside me, leaving the both of us in a sweaty mess.

I turned over to the daisies, feeling sorry that they had to bear witness this.

I was shocked at how quickly this all happened. I turned to the king, seeing him panting and running his hand through his sweaty hair.

“You highness?” I asked him. The king looked up and saw me.

“Yes, Philip?” The king asked, having a satisfied smile on his face.

“What are you doing?” I asked him.

“I thought it was obvious.” He said, thrusting himself a bit forward to remind me of what he did.

“No. That’s not what I mean. Why are you doing this?” I asked him.

I’m guessing he understood what I really meant. “I don’t know, Philip.” He replied. His face turned red. “I’m just… confused.” He said.

“About?” I asked him.

“I don’t feel comfortable talking about this with my dick in your ass.” He said.

“Right…” I replied. “Better pull out then.” I said. The king chuckled, an actual non-sarcastic chuckle. He slowly pulled out of me and helped me pull my pants back up,

“All good?” He asked, rubbing my back.

“Yeah, all good.” I replied.

The king was standing and watching me. Like he had no idea what to do or say.

“I’ll start. Do you have feelings for me?” I asked him.

The king looked taken aback. “I- I don’t know.” He replied.

“I’ll make this easier. Are you attracted to me?” I asked. The king brought his hand up to my face and rubbed my cheek.

“I am.” He replied.

“When did this start?” I asked him.

“I don’t know. I’m guessing the moment I met you. I hated your guts. But at the same time, I’ve never met a more beautiful person.” He said. His face turned red when he said that. It was an adorable sight to witness.

“Seems like you’re hesitant to express what you really want to say, your highness. But that’s okay. I know it’s not your thing to open up.” I said.

“Well-”

I interrupted him. “Look, we can’t just sneak around all the time. And I’m pretty sure that this is a conflict of interest. I remember there being a clause that I’m not supposed to have relations with any of my superiors. That includes you.” I said to him.

“Oh…” The king said. “That makes sense.” He turned around and began to get ready to leave. “So stop doing this?” He asked.

“I never said that!” I quickly replied. “I just mean that maybe we should consider why we’re even continuing to go back to each other.” I said. The king understood and gave a small nod of approval.

He began to walk. After only four steps, he stopped and turned around.

“Do you have feelings for me?” He asked, turning around and giving me a sharp gaze.

“I- I- fuck!” I muttered. “Yeah, I do. I mean, who wouldn’t!? You’re the king and the most attractive person ever! I’m not the only one!” I said.

He chuckled deeply. “Alright then. If you say so, Philip. We’ll talk soon.” He said. He turned around, putting his hands in his coat, and walked away.

I watched as the king walked away from me. I just admitted that I had feelings for him. Me, a normal person, confessing my feelings to the supreme being of the land. And I wasn’t afraid. I was nervous, but not afraid. It feels like the king and I have some sort of newer, deeper, personal connection. I’ve been feeling it for the past few months ever since I met the king.

And based on what the king just told me, it isn’t a one sided attachment.

I turned back to the fountain and looked at my reflection in the water. I saw my face was red and still flushed from the king having sex with me.

My behind still had some pain. I will definitely need to pass by the market and get some cream. And maybe carry a small bottle of lubricant around with me. Just in case the king ever decides to pull this stunt again.

I now have a small confidence boost. The king has an attraction to me. Out of all the people, he likes me.

My reflection in the fountain showed a happy person. I realized that I had a piece of food stuck in my food. I immediately felt a sense of humility, knowing that the king most likely saw that but didn’t say anything.

But… he didn’t say anything. Had he still had that hate for me, he would’ve made fun of me to the end of the earth.

I got a deeper look into the fountain and tried to get the food out of my teeth. As I leaned closer, I slipped and my face fell face first into the water. My whole face became drenched in the water.

“FUCK!” I angrily yelled. I kicked the fountain and it turned on, splashing water on my face.

I quickly stepped back and watched the fountain spray water everywhere.

Guess it’s time to fix this. No more distractions this time.

Chapter Thirteen

ALARIC

There was a small smile spread on my face as I recalled the small moment I had with Philip. Mother noticed this and questioned me about it.

“What’s got you smiling like that? I haven’t seen you smile like that since you burnt those roses.” Mother said, sipping her tea while checking up her emails.

“Nothing. Just… stuff.” I replied.

“Well, that ‘stuff’ really has you in a trance. And you rarely get that happy. Whatever it is, keep it around.” Mother said.

My alarm began ringing. “I’ll keep that in mind. I have to go.” I said, standing up from the table and making my way to the car that was ready for me at the valet. I hopped in and told the driver where I wanted to be taken.

The gates opened and the car began to drive me down the street, away from the castle. The car drove for a few minutes into the direction I wanted it to go in.

It’s Saturday today. Most of the workers are at home, off work. I snooped around my mother’s room and managed to find the file on Philip. There was his address and all his personal information.

“Your majesty, we’re here.” The driver said. I looked out and saw the apartment building, one of the more modern ones located in the gentrified districts of our capital city.

The driver opened the door for me and I got out. I walked to the front door and was let in (of course) and went up the elevator. I looked down at my phone and checked which floor I needed to go to and which room number it was.

Found it!

The apartment he was located in was at the end of the hallway. I knocked on the door and waited a while for someone to open.

“Alaric?!” Philip said when he opened the door. He had a towel on his waist and his hair was dripping with water.

“Hello, Philip.” I said, eyeing his body. Philip turned red and coughed.

“It’s Saturday. Why are you here?” Philip asked.

“I’m here to check out your place. Move.” I said. Philip stepped aside as I walked in and stood in his living room.

“Would you like water? Or a coffee?” Philip asked from behind me.

“I”m good. Though maybe you should get changed.“ I said. I heard his feet walking away to a room while I stood around, looking at his apartment.

He had what could be described as a normal apartment. A couch, television, a few pictures, and of course, some plants. I walked up to a picture frame and saw a picture of what could be described as a little Philip next to a woman smiling.

The two stood in front of the flower shop that Philip owns. The sign ‘Under New Management’ was hanging under the name of the shop.

“Your highness!” Philip said. I turned around and saw him bowing then turning back up. “What can I help you with today?” He asked.

I pointed at the picture. “Is that your mother?” I asked.

Philip walked over and stood next to me. “Yep. That’s her. Delphine Bellerose.” Philip said. He looked at the picture with a small smile on his face. Philip was now changed into casual attire with an overly large shirt and Nike sweats.

“What’s the story behind this?” I asked.

“This was when I was 7. My grandparents gave ownership of the shop over to my mother. That was the first day she worked as the owner.” Philip said.

“She’s beautiful.” I said. I stared at the woman. She had black hair and bright green eyes, just like Philip. Her skin was fair. She wore a pink floral dress that reached below her knees. Philip himself wore jean overalls. His innocent smile on his face elicits the youngness of a child that every adult wishes they can feel again.

“She really was…” Philip muttered.

“And your father?” I asked.

“Oh, he sort of dipped when I was born. I tried to track him down but he’s somewhere in Croatia with a new family.” Philip said.

“You wouldn’t ever want to meet him?” I asked.

“I had my mother all my life. She was more than enough. I don’t feel like meeting a guy who did nothing to get me to where I am.”

Normally, I’d probably be mad that a person who still has a father refuses to talk to them. But… it’s a different story when that father was an absent person in most or all of their life. I wish I could speak to my father, but he isn’t here.

“I’m checking your room.” I said. I walked to the hallway while Philip followed close behind.

“Wait! But it’s not clean!” He shouted.

I found the door and opened it. I walked in and saw the room was a bit messy. Dirty clothes were scattered everywhere and the windows were all open.

“I’m so sorry, your highness!” Philip rushed in and picked up some clothes off the door and put them in a basket. “I swear it’s not usually this messy!”

“It’s fine.” I replied. “Sometimes messiness is okay.” I said.

I walked to the bed and sat on it. Not bad. I touched the fabric of the blanket and pictured Philip sleeping here at night time. I wonder what he wears? Shorts? Jockstrap? Or all natural?

“Why are you staring at me, King Alaric?” Philip asked. I snapped out and realized I had been staring at him.

“Nothing.” I replied. Philip finished cleaning and he sat on a small chair directly in front of me. He looked awkward.

“So… any reason why a person such as you is taking time out of your packed day here in my apartment?” He asked.

“I was thinking.” I said.

“About?” Philip asked.

“I was thinking about our past conversation at the fountain…”

“Where you fucked me.”

“Right…” I said. “I was thinking back to what you said. I do find you attractive. Very attractive. And I think about you, a lot! And I want to have more!” I blurted out.

“More? Like what?” He asked.

“More, as in, dates. And, I don’t know. Stuff that people do.” I said. I couldn’t look him in the eye. I looked away and focused my eyes on the random gumball machine he has in his room. Irresponsible purchases.

“Hold hands?” He asked. I blushed. “Kiss? Dance to music when no one is looking? Baking a cake in the middle of the night in our underwear? Take showers together without actually showering? Those kinds of things?” Philip said.

“Mhm.” I nodded. I heard Philip get up and felt the bed dent. He sat next to me and rubbed my back.

“So why are you so embarrassed to say it?” He asked.

“Because I’ve never done those types of things. I was scared to say it because it sounds so weird. Like I’ve missed out on things that everyone has done before. Like riding a bike.”

“You’ve never ridden a bike?!” Philip exclaimed. “Sorry…” He said. “It’s not weird. Everyone wants to experience eros love. It’s natural for us to gravitate to it. It doesn’t make you weird. It makes you human.” Philip said.

I turned over and looked at him. I lowered my head. I placed my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes.

“I want you, Philip.” I whispered.

“I want you too, Alaric.” Philip said back. I looked up and smiled at him.

I leaned up and kissed him on the lips. It wasn’t harsh like I usually do. Philip’s hands were on my face as he rubbed my cheeks.

I pulled away and grabbed his hands.

“I think I’m falling for you, Philip.” I said.

“So am I.” He replied. I started to kiss him again. He helped me remove my coat and shoes and we leaned on the bed. He was on top of me, kissing me and running his hands on my body. My hands found his ass and began to grab it.

Philip stopped kissing me and removed my crown off my head.

He placed it on the table and resumed kissing me. My hands slipped under his sweats and grabbed his warm ass. He moaned into the kiss. His hand also began to grab my hard-on.

While we were kissing, we didn’t hear the bedroom door open.

“What the fuck!” A woman screeched. Both Philip and I pulled apart and turned to see two people standing at the door.

“Chloe! Louis!” Philip said. His face was red and he was obviously embarrassed. I leaned back and watched him become flustered.

“Philip? Were you just making out with the fucking king?!” The guy, who I assume is Louis, asked.

“Uh, Uh… I uh…” Philip stuttered.

“Yes, we were.” I said. Philip turned to me and was flabbergasted.

“No. Fucking. Way.” The girl, Chloe, said.

“How did this happen?!” Louis asked.

I saw Philip tucked in his hard-on and tired not to make it obvious. He still wasn’t sure what to say and has yet to say a coherent sentence.

“Have you two…?” Chloe asked.

“Fucked? Yes. But I was the top. I’m not bottoming.” I replied. I never knew a person’s face could get so red until I saw Philip right now.

“Idiot!” Louis muttered to Chloe. As I stood up, the two bowed down in front me and addressed me.

“It’s a pleasure to be in your presence, your majesty.” Louis said.

“It’s fine.” I said. I turned to Philip and gave him a wink. “I have to go now. But this was fun.” I said. I put on my shoes and coat and finally slipped on my crown.

“I’ll see you on Monday!” Philip squeaked out in a high pitched voice.

“I’ll see you there.” I replied.

I walked to the front door as the three followed behind me. The two friends were still shocked upon seeing me with Philip.

“It was great to meet you both.” I said to Chloe and Louis. “I’m sure we’ll see each other again.” I said. Chloe blushed and Louis was still looking at me and Philip.

“Goodbye, Alaric.” Philip said.

“Later, Philip.” I said.

“OMG they’re on a first name basis!” Chloe squealed.

I left the apartment and went back to the car that was waiting for me. As the car was driving me back to the castle, my mother began to call me.

“Alaric? Where did you go?” She asked.

“I went somewhere.” I replied.

“Oh. So, listen. About Philip.” She said.

“What about him?” I asked.

“Well, the old gardener that Philip was supposed to be a temporary replacement for got better.” She said.

“Give the old gardener a severance package and double it. Let him retire early.” I said.

“Oh, I thought you would have wanted to get rid of Philp.” She chuckled.

“No. Let’s keep Philip around.” I replied.

“Is it because you like how he makes the orchids look?” She asked.

“Sure… that’s why.” I said.

“Alright. I’ll keep him around.” Mother said. She hung up.

I began to wonder about the possibility of me and Philip being together. Would he want to be in spotlight? Would it stress him too much? Philip isn’t a person who’s used to the limelight. I could agree for us to be in a private relationship. But I also don’t want to have to hide my relationship. I want the world to see us together.

For now, I need to try to get my feelings together after a day with Philip. Who knows where this is going to take us.

Chapter Fourteen

PHILIP

“YOU AND KING ALARIC ARE DATING?!” Both Chloe and Louis shouted at me. The two still had shocked expressions on their faces. I’m guessing them walking in on their friend making out with the supreme power of the country must’ve been a shocker to them.

“Keep it down, you idiot!” I shushed them. “No, we’re not dating!” I told them.

“So what was that whole thing on your bed?! Were you two just bored and decided to kiss out of nowhere?!” Chloe asked.

“It’s not like that, Chloe.” I replied.

“So what is it then? Seems like the two of you like each other.” Louis said.

“It’s… weird to explain. We both like each other. Alaric wants to do couple things with me. But he’s scared.” I explained.

“You called him Alaric. Not king. Oh shit! You two are falling for each other!” Louis said.

“Maybe. We’re still trying to figure it out. But I think it’s going in that direction.” I said. My two friends squealed and both hugged me.

“This is so adorable! No more one night stands! You can finally settle down!” Chloe said.

“Wait a minute? How did you two get into my apartment?” I asked, remembering that they were able to see both Alaric and I making out on my bed.

“You don’t remember? A few weeks ago when you were drunk you gave me your spare house key as a gift.” Chloe said.

“Ohhhhhh! That’s right!” I chuckled to myself.

“Anyways. We brought food over! We’re going to eat this and you’re going to give us the timeline of everything!” Louis said.

We all sat on my couch, eating food as I described everything about my time with Alaric. I made sure to exclude anything that might be too explicit. I just described the small glances and interactions we had.

After my story, the two were still shell-shocked. They couldn’t believe that I am in a relationship with Alaric.

Monday came and I have yet to hear anything from Alaric. The queen called me to let me know that my contract has been extended and I’m an official worker, not just a temporary one. Meaning that my pay has been raised.

So that’s good. I can send more money to my store and ramp up production of roses more. Demand for roses has been increasing now that we’re a few months into the ban. Should Alaric ever find out, he’ll have me prisoned and possibly executed.

“Good morning, Philip!” Gabriel, one of the main cooks, greeted me.

“Morning, Gabriel!” I replied. He handed me a tupperware with food inside.

“Here’s your lunch. By the way, the king is requesting you.” He said.

“Me? But it’s still morning. Why does he need me at this time?”

“I don’t know. He just told us to tell you to meet him in his office.” Gabriel said. He returned to mixing a pot of sauce as I made my way through the kitchen and into the dining hall. From there, I made my way into the stairs and soon was in front of the king’s office.

Before I could knock, the door opened and the king ushered me in.

“Good morning, your highness.” I bowed to him.

“Good morning, Philip.” He replied. He sat in his chair as I sat in front of him.

“I heard you wanted to see me.” I said. My fingers were playing with each other as I grew worried about why the king wanted to speak to me in private. Could this be about Saturday when he came over and opened up?

“Yes, I did. About Saturday…” I knew it. “I-I wanted to ask if you’d be willing to get coffee with me.” Alaric asked. He looked away, not wanting to make eye contact with me.

“Alaric.” I said his name. “If you’re going to ask me on a date, I want you to look me in the eye.” I told him.

Alaric hid his nervousness behind a facade of courage and a stoic face. He carefully turned to face me and looked me in the eye.

“Would you join me for coffee?” He asked.

I smiled and nodded. “Sure, Alaric. I’d love to join you for coffee.” I replied.

“Perfect.” Alaric cleared his throat. He stood up. “Come on!” He said, walking to the door and holding it open.

“Go where?” I asked him.

“To get coffee.” He said.

“In public?” I asked.

“Of course not! I’m calling a barista to make us something. We’ll dine outside in the gardens.” He said. I stood up and exited his office. The king closed the door behind him and locked it.

We both began walking down the hall side by side. All I could hear was his footsteps against the floor. I turned to him and saw him standing tall and proud. The sun from the windows shone on his face. His blue eyes looked brighter in the light.

“You’re staring.” Alaric said.

“Can’t help it. My eyes are attracted to anything that’s beautiful.” I replied. Alaric blushed and didn’t react to what I said. We descended the stairs and walked through the kitchen into the gardens.

The king was looking around until he found a spot and walked over there. I followed close behind as we came to a table and two chairs overlooking a field of cherry blossom trees.

“Wow! This is nice!” I said.

“I’m glad you enjoy it.” He replied.

“Did you choose this place because you’d know I’d like it?” I asked.

“Yes, I did.” He said. I placed my elbows on the table, my chin on my hands holding me up. I smiled at Alaric as he sat in front of me, not looking away from me.

“So what caused you to ask me out?” I asked Alaric.

“I figured that since I admitted my feelings, I might as well try to see where this goes.” He responded. A woman walked towards the table as I played footsies with Alaric under the table.

“Good morning, your highness!” The woman bowed then stood back up. “Can I take both of your orders?” She asked.

“Sure.” The king replied. “I’ll have a light roast coffee with sugar and cream. What would you like, Philip?” The king asked me.

“Oh, uh… can I get a chai latte with vanilla cold foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Plus a pump of peppermint.” I said.

“Sure, I can do that.” The woman said.

“Can you also bring us some desserts?” Alaric asked. The woman nodded and left and entered the kitchen. “That was quite an order.” He said to me.

“I like the sweet things in life. I’d rather eat all the junk right now while I’m young than not try it when I’m old. You should try it someday. Maybe even a hot chocolate.” I said.

“I’ll stick to my teas and roasts.” Alaric said.

“That would explain why you’re bitter. Next time, we’re going to get ice cream.” I said.

“I don’t like ice cream.” Alaric said.

“You don’t like ice cream? How?! Are you human?!” I asked him.

“I don’t like it. In my opinion, ice cream is just useless. It’s just nearly frozen milk with a bunch of sugar and sweets. Just drink chocolate milk.” He said.

“Ice cream can be many things. Sure, some are sweet. But you can have some with fruits, nuts. I even once tried cigar flavored ice cream. You just haven’t tried some good ice cream.” I said.

“Then for our next date, you’ll choose the place.” He said.

“So this is a date?” I asked him, wanting to hear it from him.

“I thought we established that it was.” He said.

“I just never got an actual confirmation. This feels nice. I’ve never been on a date inside a castle with a personal barista.” I said.

“I’ve never been on a date in general. I hope I’m doing good so far.” He had a look of worry on his face. He’s overthinking.

“You’re doing amazing! Trust me, I’ve been on other dates before. Most of the guys were just trying to get into my pants. And the rest were bored the entire time.”

“That’s nice to hear.” Alaric said. The woman from earlier walked over to our table with a cart.

“Here’s your food.” She said. She brought out two cups with our drinks inside. She also placed several plates with snacks on the table. Some were small cakes, pastries, eclairs, and even macarons.

“This looks amazing!” I said.

“Go ahead and dig in.” Alaric said. I grabbed several things and placed them on my plate. I chowed them down and ate quickling. I would also gulp them down with my drink. I looked up and saw the king was watching me with a smile.

“Sorry.” I muttered.

“It’s fine. It’s good to see that someone enjoys it.” He said and returned to sipping his coffee.

After I finished eating, I turned to look at the view of the trees. The pink petals were flying into the wind and swirling into pink paths in the air.

“The trees were a gift from Japan. We gave them some food from our reserves after the Americans bombed them.” Alaric said.

“They’re pretty. Isn’t the Japanese embassy located on the other side?” I asked.

“Yep.” He said. He finished his coffee. I noticed he only ate one cookie and nothing else.

“You didn’t eat?” I asked.

“I don’t eat in public. I feel vulnerable doing it. Only when I’m inside will I eat. Otherwise, you’ll just see me drinking in public.” He said.

“Not me. I’ll pig out and not care what anyone says. I’ve learned that some people aren’t worth thinking about. And you’re the king. You can do whatever you want. Anyone who judges you doesn’t matter because they’re below you.” I told him.

“I’m learning to stop being so nervous in public. Though I don’t see myself doing so anytime soon.” He said. The woman came by and collected our empty cups and plates.

“This was a fun date.” I said.

“It was. I actually enjoyed being around you.” He said. We stood up and were facing each other.

“So… another date?” I asked.

“For sure. You pick next time.” He said. Now I need to pick the right place. I have no idea about the king’s taste. I need to make a good choice.

“Do you plan on telling your mother about us? It could be a conflict of interest if I began dating the king.” I asked him.

“My mother is kind of a psychic and she can tell when something is going on. She either already knows about us or is suspecting that we’re into each other.” Alaric replied.

“Would she approve of us?” I asked.

“My mother really likes you. She’d be delighted to hear that her friend is dating her son.” Alaric’s phone began to ring. “I need to take this.” He said and walked off.

I watched him talk into the phone. I never knew someone talking into a phone could be so attractive. Yet here he was. His veiny hands holding up his phone as he talks into it regarding something that I will never understand.

He hung up and then walked over to me.

“I have a meeting to get to.” He said.

“I understand. Go. And I’ll get back to work.” I said.

“Thank you for spending time with me, Philip. You make me feel special.” He said.

“Because you are special.” I replied. He placed his hand on my face and began to slowly lean in.

I leaned in with him and kissed him on the lips. He split away and brought his hand back down.

“See you later, Philip.” He said.

“You too, Alaric.” I said. I bowed to him and he walked away into the kitchen and back into the castle. I was left outside and smiled at myself stupidly, picturing a soft Alaric.

I skipped back to the tool shed and grabbed my tools. There was a sun shining over me. And nothing could darken my day.

Chapter Fifteen

ALARIC

Once my meeting ended, I exited and met up with my mother in the throne room. She was looking outside, downwards to where the gardens are at. I approached behind her as she sipped her tea.

“What’s your opinion on Philip?” She asked me, not turning around.

“Why? Are you planning on firing him?” I asked back.

“Hmm, no. I just want to know your opinion on him. I know you two didn’t start off on good terms.” She said.

“I have no opinion on Philip.” I said, lying through my teeth. “He’s a gardener and I’m the head of the country. I will not focus my time on him.”

“You sure?” She asked, suddenly turning around and having a smirk on their face.

“I am sure, mother. What is this about? I feel like you’re interrogating me.” I said.

“No reason. Just asking.” She said. She turned back to the window and looked down. I joined her near the window and looked down at Philip. He was working away, digging a hole into the ground.

Philip was working tirelessly. His sleeves were rolled up and his shirt and pants were dirty. My eyes were wandering all over his body, wondering what he looks like underneath. I’ve only seen glances of his skin. But his entire body unclothed is something that I’ve been finding myself imagining.

“He’s a handsome man, isn’t he?” Mother said.

“He sure is…” I muttered out.

“Mm? So you admit it? He is an attractive person.” Mother said. Fuck!

“Yes, he is. He certainly has features that are quite… desirable.”

“Desirable enough for a king to fall in love with?” She teased me.

“I’m not looking for a relationship right now, mother. I have other things to focus on.” I replied to her.

“That’s exactly what your father said until he met me. Trust me, you’ll find love in the most random moments. Just know that when you find it, don’t let go.” She said. She sat her cup of tea on the table and walked away, leaving me to watch Philip alone.

There was a small smile on my face as I looked at Philip. Something about him just brings me a small amount of joy. That’s not something I want to let go. Honestly, I’ve felt like I’ve been becoming a better person because of the joy that Philip brings me.

The next day rolled around. I descended the stairs and ran into Philip.

“Oh, good morning, your highness!” He bowed.

“Good morning, Philip. How was your day?” I asked him.

“Pretty good. I finally found a place for us to have our next date at.” He said.

“Oh, really? When is it?” I asked.

“Today, if you want.” He had a smile on his face. I checked my phone and saw that there wasn’t anything on my agenda for the rest of the day.

“Sure. What’s the dress code?” I asked.

“Wear something casual. Just shorts and a shirt.” He said. I nodded and left to go get changed. Luckily, I have every type of outfit I could wear and found something simple. I met up with Philip again.

“Is this good?” I asked. Philip’s eyes traced up and down my body.

“Perfect.” He said. We walked out the castle and through the front gardens. The guards opened the door and I let one of the guards follow us for security measures.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“There’s this cafe that I always go to with my friends. I figured you could use something sweet today.” He said. He led the way as I walked behind him. Everyone around me was busy with their lives. Some did recognize me and bowed while others just stepped out of my way.

We reached a townhouse that was made of bricks. The building itself looked old. The inside, however, was more modern with bright colorful walls and tables and chairs.

We entered as the bell on the door rang. The teen at the counter perked up and immediately stood tall as I walked in.

“Your highness!” She bowed. “It’s my biggest honor to serve you today!” She said. Her eyes turned to Philip. “Nice to see you again, Philip.” She said with teasing eyes.

“Good day, Helena.” Philip replied. The teen blushed and pushed her hair behind her ear.

“The usual?” She asked.

“Yep! Double it for both of us, please?” Philip said.

“No problem.” She said. Philip began to pull out his wallet however I had foreseen this and slammed three 100 note bills on the counter.

“Wait! Your highness! Let me pay!” Philip pleaded.

“Nonsense. You keep your money. I have more than enough.” I said. Philip wanted to protest but I kept my word. He stared into my eyes, while I longed for his touched. I had forgotten that the teen was still watching us. We split away and I turned back to her.

“This is too much, your highness! The food is only 53 notes! Here’s your change!” She opened the register.

“Stop! Keep the change. That’s for you.” I said. Her face turned red.

“Okay, your highness. Thank you, once again! I’ll have your order read ASAP!” She handed us the receipt as she went into the kitchen. Philip tugged on my shirt.

“Yes?” I asked him.

“We’re sitting over there.” He pointed to a table in the corner of the room. There was a window that faced the promenade where we could watch people stroll by.

We sat there across from each other.

“She seems to have a crush on you.” I told Philip.

“Seems like she has one on you too.” He replied.

“I guess she has good taste.” I said. Philip coughed and turned to look outside.

We sat in silence for a while. The only thing that could be heart was the blender in the back and an American pop song playing on the speakers.

“How’s the flower business?” I asked him.

“It’s good! We’ve had a successful quarter. Plus the income from my gardening job. Soon I’ll be able to go on my dream vacation.” He said.

The teen came by and placed two milkshakes in front of us. Both were chocolate that had a colorful straw and a dollop of cream on top.

“I’ll be back with your food in a second!” She quickly walked away.

“What’s your dream vacation?” I asked Philip.

“The Maldives. I want to go before they sink underwater. I heard they’re beautiful. You? Have anywhere you’d like to visit?” He asked.

I sat thinking. “Honestly, I’ve never thought about it.” I muttered.

“Seriously? I mean, any other monarch would jump at any chance to take a vacation. You seriously don’t have anywhere you’d want to go?” He asked.

“Nothing. I have no business going to another country unless it’s for formal events.”

“For a man who has a private jet and a large treasury, you sure don’t like taking vacations. Let’s make a list of places you could visit for your break.” He said. He grabbed a marker that the table has for some reason and a napkin.

“You don’t have to do that.” I said.

“Nonsense! Let’s do it! First, would you like somewhere hot or cold?” He asked.

“Mm. I think hot. I do like swimming sometimes.” I said.

“Didn’t know that. Okay! Somewhere near a body of water. Do you want a place known for its cuisine? Or traditions?”

“Cuisines for sure.” I replied.

“Hmm. How about Spain?” He asked.

“Not too fond of the Spaniards.” I replied, remembering when a Spanish representative asked me if the passing of my father would affect our relationship with his country. And it was at his funeral.

“Got it. No Iberia. How about Los Angeles?” He asked.

“I’d rather sleep on nails.” I replied.

“Miami?” Philip asked.

“Based off what I’ve been seeing on the news, no thank you.” I replied with a disgusted face.

“No to LA or Miami. Why not the Maldives, just like me! It’s tropical with nice beaches and pretty good food.” Philip said.

“I’ll think about it.” I said.

The teen came back with a cart that had food on it. She rolled it up to our table and began to place the plates on the table.

“Here’s your food.” She said. Once she was done, she bowed to me again. “Enjoy your food!” She then hurriedly ran to behind the counter and acted like she wasn’t watching us.

I looked down at the food and almost fainted from the color of everything.

“Let’s start with this.” Philip handed me a plate of waffles but they were green. “They’re pandan waffles. They’re kind of chewy in a good way.” Philip grabbed the maple bottle and poured some over the waffles. I grabbed a knife and fork and cut into them and placed a small piece in my mouth.

Definitely chewy. “It’s nice. Sweet and airy.” I said, covering my mouth while eating.

“Perf! Cause we have some more stuff to get through. Have you ever tried a mochi doughnut?” He asked.

I wanted to groan out loud. But Philip seems to be excited to make me try all these sweet confections. So while normally I would tell him to stop, I’ll keep my mouth shut, or I guess open, and go along with him, just for him to smile more.

“I know you said you didn’t like ice cream. So I figured we could do milkshakes. They’re almost like ice cream but smoother. Try it.” He said. I grabbed my cup and took a sip.

“Not bad.” I said. I could tell he wanted to say more. But I guess giving something a slight approval is enough for him.

“Eat up! We have a lot to get through!” Philip began to chow down his food quickly.

“You’re going to get hiccups that way.” I told him, taking a small bit from the doughnut.

“Trust me! I know what I’m doing.” He said with a mouthful of food.

Twenty minutes later, Philip was chugging down water because of his hiccups. I sat back and watched him struggle to breath.

“I warned you.” I said.

“Shut… up!” He hiccuped his words. I had a satisfied smile on his face. “Could you… at least… help… me!” He once again hiccuped out.

An idea popped in my head. I stretched my leg forward and placed it on his crotch. My heel dug in harder and I stroked him with my foot. Philip’s face turned red. He looked down at his lap and watched what I was doing.

“Is this helping?” I asked him.

“Fuck…” He groaned out. I kept nudging him over feeling his length get bigger.

I had a smirk on my face as I watched him pant. His hands were gripping the cloth of the table.

I stopped my foot and pulled it away. He was breathing hard and hiding his red face.

“All better?” I asked him.

“Y-Yeah, better.” He said.

We waited a minute and sure enough, his hiccups were all gone. Never knew getting someone turned on can get rid of hiccups. I’ll remember that for next time.

“We’re not going to finish all of this…” Philip and I looked down at the food, which was not fully eaten.

“I am sure my mother would like some of these. I will have it to go.” I said. I signaled the teen over and asked for some to-go boxes. She gladly brought some over and handed them to us.

“If you don’t mind me asking, but are you two on a date?” She asked, a hard blush forming on her face.

I turned to Philip. Then to her. “Yes, we are.” I said. She let out a small giggle.

“Awesome.” She muttered. She bowed to me again and left. I helped Philip put some of the things away.

With bags in hand, we stood up and went to the exit. I stood next to Philip and leaned over to place a small peck on his cheek. He was caught off guard and was stuttering his words.

“Thank you for this, Philip. You’re amazing.” I said.

“You’re welcome.” He said. He had a smile that could stop traffic on his face.

As we opened the door, the teen at the door was gushing and had been recording our small interactions. I’ll definitely be seeing that video on the news in a few minutes. If this is the way I want people to know about my relationship, then so be it.

In the end, despite all the photos and videos and interviews, I’ll maintain the thing that kept me where I am.

Philip.

The florist that has changed me slowly with welcoming embraces.

Chapter Sixteen

PHILIP

I didn’t expect the video of me and the king to spread so quickly all over the internet. I was immediately recognized as soon as I stepped into my apartment building. Neighbors that I never knew existed were greeting me outside their doors.

Of course, Chloe and Louis were the first to call me and sort of bombard me with messages. Most of their texts were just them congratulating me and the king for getting much closer. Seeing as how they didn’t know we were this close, I’ll bet they’re probably shitting themselves.

As I entered the kitchen for my next day of work, several of the cooks winked at me. I giggled at this and just grabbed a snack and left for the tool shed.

After setting everything up, I began to get to work. I fixed up a stone path and refixed the water fountain that I meant to fix up a while back.

I turned up to the window and saw Alaric on the phone talking to someone. He sensed me looking at him and he looked down. A small smile spread on his face and he waved at me. I waved back to him.

“I knew it!” A voice yelled. I jumped and almost dropped a large stone on my foot. I turned and saw the former Queen marching towards me. I was nervous that she was mad that I kissed her son, supreme leader of the kingdom.

“Your highness!” I bowed to her.

“I had my suspicions that you and Alaric may have had something brewing. But I pushed those aside because there was no possible way you two would have dated. Not after your not-so pleasant meeting!” She said.

“I’m sorry, ma’am!” I bowed to her. “I hope that my relationship to the king will not cause any controversy!”

“Oh stop that, Philip!” The queen said. I heard her chuckle and I looked up and saw her giggling. “Truth is, I’m glad you and Alaric found each other.” She said.

“Really?” I asked.

“But of course. It was bound to happen. No two people can hate each other and not fall for each other. I’ve seen this before. My theories were confirmed when I saw that video yesterday.” She said.

“So it’s not a problem that the king has a relationship with a guy, let alone a commoner?” I asked.

“I have no problem with it. And Alaric doesn’t seem to care. And if it makes you feel better, the king’s approval rating has been rising. He definitely needed that after his law on roses.” She patted my back. “You did good.” She muttered.

Her eyes were teary. “Are you okay?” I asked her.

“I’m fine. It’s just nice to see Alaric smiling.” She pulled me in for a hug.

“I catch myself smiling sometimes too. Alaric definitely has a heart.” I replied.

“I’ll be leaving you now. Thank you, Philip. I don’t think you know how much Alaric feels for you.” She said.

“I’ll probably never know. As long as I know that he feels something for me, that’s all that matters.” I said.

She smiled and nodded at me as she turned away.

I smiled to myself as I bent down and picked up the rock I had dropped.

The times I’ve been spending with Alaric have been some of the best moments so far. Unlike the guys I’ve tried dating in the past, who were all insufferable or looking for a quick hookup, Alaric makes me feel like I’m important.

Both of us put each other on pedestals, subconsciously agreeing that we’re both worth more than we feel. No longer am I left wondering when I’ll find someone special. Part of me knows that I may have found the one. The other part is telling myself to give it a bit longer.

After I finished my work, I set my things away and walked to the charred plot of land where the roses once stood. I searched around and found a single rose that has been growing.

“My baby…” I muttered. I bent down and saw that the rose had bloomed. A bright red rose has fully bloomed. The crimson petals were obvious and stand out to anyone who looks close enough.

The rose has also been sprouting some other branches, with the buds of future blooms beginning to grow.

My exact plans for this flower are unsure. At some point, the king will find this and he will destroy this rose.

“What are you doing here?” A booming voice called out to me. I jumped and quickly turned around and saw the king was behind me.

“Alaric! You scared me!” I said. I quickly kicked a dead bush of roses and covered the rose.

“Sorry I couldn’t see you earlier. My day was packed with meetings. But I now have time for you.” He said. He leaned in and kissed me on the lips.

“I’ve been waiting to see you all day. Your mother came by and talked to me earlier.” I told Alaric.

“What did she say? I hope nothing terrible.” He said.

“No, not all. She was actually happy that you’re happy.” I said. I gulped hard, hoping the king wouldn’t see the rose behind me.

“I’ve been in meetings all day. Calls coming in from left and right regarding the video that was spread.” Alaric said.

“So I’m guessing our relationship is a good thing for your approval rating, huh?” I jokingly asked.

“Who would’ve known that having a boyfriend would make me more likable? Maybe I should have asked you out a long time ago.” He said.

“Boyfriend?” I asked him. Alaric quickly closed his mouth and realized what he had just said.

“I- I didn’t…” He muttered.

“You didn’t mean to call me that?” I asked.

“Well, you see, ahh! Fuck me.” He whispered to himself. “I probably should have asked you about that.” He said.

“Ask me to be official? I mean, the world has already seen you kiss me. We’ve already skipped to fourth base. It would ideally make sense to put a label on it. But if you don’t feel comfortable doing so, I can wait.” I told him.

Alaric was in a moment of thinking. His eyebrows furrowed, showing he was in deep thought of everything. His hands reached to grab my hands. He gently caressed them, rubbing his fingers all over my slightly dirty hands.

“Can we make this official?” He asked.

“Be boyfriends? I’d love nothing more than to be your boyfriend!” I said.

I leaned into Alaric and planted my kiss on his. He hugged me close and lifted me and spun me around. He never let go of me. I kept him near me. He slowly set me down and I noticed him trying to hold in tears.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him.

“Nothing.” He chuckled and wiped a loose tear. “Nothing at all.” He looked at me with full admiration.

“As long as you’re happy…” I said.

“You know I am.” Alaric replied. He finally looked around us and noticed where we were standing. “Why are you here?” He asked.

“Just wanted to check this place out.” I said.

“For what? There’s nothing here to look at.” Alaric said. Yeah. sure, nothing.

“I’m just seeing the once-to-be roses that once existed here. You really did a number on these babies.” I said.

“Heh, yeah.” He chuckled awkwardly. “I plan on having this place excavated and building something new here. Enjoy it while it lasts.”

“What do you plan on building?” I asked.

“I’ve had thoughts of importing some Roman statues and setting them up here. Give it a nice Italian villa look.” He said.

“Well, it’s not my castle so you do you.” I replied.

“Nonsense! I want you to help me plan this future place. I think you have a great eye for details.” He replied.

“If you say so. Just know that I plan on adding a ton of shrubbery in the planning.” I said.

Alaric chuckled. “Of course you would.”

Alaric once again leaned in and enveloped me in a tight hug. I could feel his hands on my back and rubbing my softly. Then, his hands went stiff. It was a sudden shift in his previous actions.

“Alaric?” I asked him.

He pulled away from me and gently pushed me aside. I turned and saw that his eyes were on the rose, which was easily seen from his perspective.

“Is that a…”

“Shit!” I yelled. I quickly ran to the rose, placing myself between Alaric and the lonely rose.

“Step aside, Philip.” The king angrily said, his red face reminding me of our beginning encounters when everything about me annoyed him.

“Just hand on a minute, Alaric!” I pleaded. “It’s just a flower! It’s not doing any harm!”

“I will not allow one of those things to be in my backyard! Move so I can dispose of it accordingly!” The king commanded.

“No! I’m sorry, Alaric, but I’m not moving! I promised myself to protect this plant!” I said.

Alaric seemed hesitant to try and do anything that would hurt me. He’s in a dilemma right now. For one, he wants to get rid of roses by any means possible. But the person standing in the way of it is his recent boyfriend.

“Philip. Be reasonable here. Simply step aside and let me deal with this.” Alaric said.

“My word is final, Alaric. I’m not leaving.” I said.

I planted my feet deep into the burnt soil. Both Alaric and I were staring at one another.

“Don’t be so difficult, Philip.” He muttered.

“They’re not that bad, Alaric.” I said. I turned and bent down and carefully broke off the bloomed rose. I carefully picked it up and held it in my hands.

“Philip! Please be careful with that!” The king looked worried as I held the rose in my hand.

“It’s nothing harmful. They’re beautiful. See?” I held out the rose to him. Alaric stepped back.

“Get it away from me! Drop that thing!” Alaric yelled. I grew concerned over his worriedness of a rose.

“Please just hold it. Just smell it. Please?” I asked nicely.

“I said no! And you should stop touching it!” He said.

“But they’re so pretty.” I awed at the rose.

As I held it in my hand, my fingers began to feel the stem of the rose. Then I pricked my finger on a thorn, It wasn’t too bad but definitely hurt.

“Ow!” I yelled. I dropped the rose by accident on the floor. I looked down at my finger and saw a droplet of crimson blood coming out from my thumb.

“Philip!” Alaric yelled. He ran over to me and held up my hand. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” He was breaking down into sobs.

“Calm down, Alaric. It’s just a prick. It’s not that bad!” I said. Alaric kicked the rose away.

“Don’t panic!” He nervously said. “I’m getting help!” He said and pulled out his phone. He quickly called someone and several guards came rushing over to where we were.

“Alaric? What’s going on-”

“He got poked by a thorn! Take him to the medical room!” Alaric ordered the guards. The guards quickly escorted me away from the burnt acre and towards the castle.

“Alaric? What’s going on? What’s happening?!” I urgently asked Alaric. Alaric followed close behind, him trying not to break down.

“Don’t worry, Philip! I’m not letting anything happen to you!” Is all he would mutter.

I watched around me as the guards ran and forced me to follow them to a new wing of the castle I hadn’t been in yet. A giant red cross was at the front of a wooden door. A guard who was standing next to it saw us coming and quickly opened the door for us.

“Get the doctor! Tell him it’s an emergency!” The king told a nurse.

“Philip! Please tell me what’s going on!” I asked him. I was seated in a hospital chair and left with a mumbling Alaric pacing back and forth the room.

“Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck! I should’ve seen this! Fuck!” Alaric muttered to himself.

“Alaric!” I firmly called him. He stopped in his tracks and looked at me with pain in his eyes. “Please tell me what’s going on?” I asked him.

Alaric sat on the bed, next to me, and rubbed my leg.

“I’m sorry…” He muttered.

“Of?” I asked.

“Everything.” He said.

A man with a white coat quickly ran in and spotted us on the corner of the room.

“Was it a rose?!” The doctor asked.

“Mhm! It was a rose!” Alaric said. The doctor pulled out several needles and vials of medicine, placing them on the counter.

I turned back to Alaric.

“Do you know how my father died?” Alaric asked.

“We were told it was an unforeseen accident. But we never knew the exact details.” I replied.

“We never told the public how he died.” He said. He adjusted himself on the bed to face me more directly.

What the hell is he going to tell me?

Chapter Seventeen

ALARIC

“Dad!” I called out. My dad walked over to me and stood next to me, looking at what I was looking at.

“Wow.” My dad gasped. He bent down and kneeled next to the roses, not caring that his delicate jeans were getting dirty. “I always look forward to late spring. That’s when the prettiest roses bloom.”

“Didn’t you give mother roses on your first date together?” I asked my dad, kneeling down next to him too.

“I did, in fact. She claims that she knew I was the one from that moment.” Dad said. I watched him reach forward and carefully rip a red rose off one of the rose bushes. He held it up to me and allowed me to smell it.

“It smells heavenly.” I said.

“Exactly. I love these flowers.” He said. He let out a small grunt. I quickly looked down and saw that my dad had gotten pricked by a thorn.

“Are you okay, dad?” I asked him.

Dad just shrugged. “It’s fine. Doesn’t hurt too bad.” He put his finger to his mouth and sucked the blood off his finger. “I’ve faced worse than a thorn prick.” He said.

“Well, you should still get some antibiotics. You never know.” I said.

“I’m fine. Now come on. You have sword practice.” Dad said. I saw him set the rose down gently on the dirt. I also stood up and we patted ourselves down and got rid of the dirt.

Both my dad and I walked into the castle. I went up to my room to change while my dad talked to a few people. After I had changed, I walked down and met up with my parents.

“Lead the way, Prince Alaric.” Dad said. I nodded and began marching into the west wing towards the sword practice room. I was greeted by the guy who helps me with my practice.

I spent an hour practicing. My dad would coach me on techniques to improve my form. He always gives me the best advice. There’s a reason why my dad is so loved. He isn’t just loved by his family but by all his citizens. And I aspire to be just like him.

Afterwards, it was time for dinner. We sat at the table. I talked to my mother about my day while dad sat back and smiled at his family. Then, I saw him begin to clutch his stomach. He stumbled out of the room. I was worried a bit and waited for him to come back.

When time passed, mother and I stood up and went to look for him. We found him in a communal bathroom, throwing up in a toilet. We called for a doctor to check up on him. But his condition only went downhill from there.

One minute, he just had stomach cramps. Next, he was in a private room with the country’s best doctors doing work on him.

“How could this have happened?!” Mother shouted.

“It seems that when he pricked himself on the thorn, a fungal bacteria entered his bloodstream, your highness.” The doctor explained.

“It’s a bacteria! It shouldn’t cause this much damage!” Mother shrieked.

“Unfortunately, it seems that the king was infected by one that’s resistant to all types of antibiotics. But we’re continuing our best efforts!” The doctor said.

The heart rate monitor began to speed up. The doctor ran over to my dad’s side and assisted the nurses in fixing whatever was broken. I stood next to my mother and held her close, as we both relied on each other to get us through this.

I didn’t know how long my dad had left to live. It could be minutes. Days. Possibly years. But currently, I regret not spending more time with him.

From what the doctor’s described to us, it’s quite rare for someone to get an infection from a rose thorn. But not impossible. It’s happened before. But never has someone been on the verge of death.

The news finally came. There was a chance that nothing could be done. And we were told it would be best to say our goodbyes for now. And it was a moment that I never want to experience again. Seeing someone I cherish lose their life in front of me.

I explained this story to Philip. I held back tears as I explained to him why I hate roses.

It’s because they’re responsible for the death of my father. And since then, I refuse to entertain the thought of roses.

My head was held down in shame as I recalled everything. I sometimes try to forget that day. But no matter how much I try, it’ll always follow me.

“Alaric.” Philip called me.

“I don’t want to lose you.” I lightly sobbed.

“Alaric!” Philip firmly yelled my name. I stopped sobbing and turned to look at him as he placed his hand on top of mine.

I stared into his eyes. Panic set over me as I began to worry that my Philip was going to be taken away from me. I never wanted to settle because one day, I’ll lose that person and will feel great pain. That pain has arrived today.

“You’re not going to lose me.” Philip said.

“How do I know that? Anything can happen to you!” I said.

“What happened to your dad was a freak accident. It was a one in a billion chances that something could happen. And I’m sure that I’m not going to die.” Philip said.

“But what if you do leave me? I can’t lose you, Phil. You’re too important to me.” I said.

“Trust me, I’m not going anywhere.” He said. I laid my head on Philip’s lap and let him stroke my hair softly.

I breathed in and I waited for my tears to dry on my face. Philip’s finger kept rubbing my scalp, massaging me and making me feel comfortable in his hold.

“You blame roses for the death of your father. But it wasn’t their fault.” Philip said. I stayed silent. “I mean, knives kill people, do you ban all knives? People kill people. Are you going to ban people too?” Philip asked.

“N-No.” I stuttered out.

“I care about you, Alaric. And I know that you need help.”

“Are you going to tell me to get therapy just like my mother has told me?” I asked.

“I’m not going to tell you. But I’m going to recommend it. You have some deep trauma that needs counseling.” Philip said. I felt his hands grab me and pulled me up. I snuggled into his chest, clutching his shirt in my fist.

“You really think I’m that broken?”

“You are broken. But that doesn’t mean you’re worthless.” Philip’s words struck me. I need to know my own self worth. I know that I’m worth something. To my mother. To Philip. To my citizens.

“I’ll go to therapy. If you and mother think it’s for the best for me, I’ll set an appointment.” I told Philip.

“I’m glad to hear that. And to make you feel safe, I’ll subject myself to all medications you need the doctor to do.” He replied.

I smiled and leaned up to kiss Philip on the lips.

“Thank you, Phil.” I said.

“Anything for you, Alaric.” He said.

After my crying session, I got off the bed and called in the doctor, who stepped outside during my storytelling of my father. I instructed him on what to do. He remembered what it was like on the day my father died. Therefore, he promised to make sure Philip is safe.

Meanwhile, I stepped outside and took in a deep sigh of relief. Mother turned the corner and ran to me.

“I heard what happened to Philip! Is he okay!?” Mother urgently asked.

“Yes, mom. We are going to be alright.” I said.

“We?” She asked.

“Both Philip and I agreed to make things official.” I said.

“Oh, my Alaric! Congratulations! I’ve been waiting for this day for so long!” Mother hugged me tightly. “I knew you’d find someone.” She muttered in my ear.

“I’m just waiting for the doctor to do all the tests on Philip. Then I plan on taking him to see dad.” I said.

“You sure? You never let anyone see his grave.” Mother replied.

“I’m sure. Philip is worthy of seeing his tomb. I’m also sure that father would approve of Philip. He’s kind, caring, and brings out the best in me.” I said.

“I support your decision. And when you need to pop the question, come to me. I’ll give you the ring your father gave me.” Mother said. She kissed me on the cheek and patted my back.

The doctor’s door opened and Philip was escorted out. His eyes lit up when he saw me standing there waiting for me.

“That was quick.” I said.

“They gave me some antibiotics. You know, you should’ve told me they were going to be needles. I’m terrified of them.” Philip said.

“I’ll take note of that next time.” I said. My right hand reached out to grab his left hand. “Come on, I want to show you something.” I said.

“Where?” He asked.

“Somewhere important.” I teased. I tugged on his arm and he gasped in pain. “Shit! I’m sorry!” I said.

“It’s fine. That’s the arm I got my injections at.” He said. I reached over and grabbed his right hand.

“Is this fine?” I gave his right arm a light tug.

“Yeah. It’s fine.” He said. I turned to my mother, who gave me a nod.

“Let’s go!” I said. I sped walked down the halls with Philip being dragged behind me

We reached outside and I walked us through the gardens and down a dirt path. The surrounding area was full of tall trees that make it impossible for anyone outside to see what’s inside. The dense forest was illuminated by the sunlight entering through the gaps of the branches.

“How much farther? I didn’t get to have lunch.” Philip complained.

“Just a little more.” I said. Finally, we reached a small grass clearing. The small grass clearing was in the shape of a circle. The tall thick trees around the perimeter formed a natural wall.

In the center of the clearing was a large stone slab. Surrounding the slab were a few wild flowers planted. I walked us closer to it and saw the writing engrained on the stone slab.

Here Lies His Majesty

King Duvall LaFramboise II

A father, husband, and leader.

In the center of the slab was our family seal. And alongside was a side profile of my father.

Philip, throughout this, remained quiet. I’m guessing he understood the somber atmosphere that this place emanates. He didn’t make any jokes or any sassy remarks. I looked down at my father’s grave and kneeled next to it.

“You know, I used to visit my dad’s grave every day after he died. I sometimes refused to believe he was gone.” I muttered. Philip also kneeled next to me and rubbed my shoulder.

“If he was here now, he would be proud of you.” Philip said.

“I think you’re right.” I said.

I took a deep breath.

“I’m doing good, dad. I have a boyfriend now. Mother still misses you. I’m leading with the best that I can. I still remember all your lessons. Thank you for everything.” I said. I ran my finger on the stone on the floor.

I stood up, along with Philip, and we both bowed for a minute in front of the grave.

For the first time, I didn’t cry, nor was I angry. Every time I visited, I was either a crying mess or ball of anger. I was sad that my father was gone and wouldn’t be around to see me become the king that he raised me to be. I was angry because he was taken from me unfairly in such a miniscule manner.

But today, I was at peace. I now see that my emotions, while justified, have been left to fester and go unchecked. With Philip, he reminds me of the good that I have.

“Want to go get something to eat?” Philip asked.

I turned to him and smiled at him.

“I’d like that.” I said.

He gently grabbed my hand and began to lead me out of my dad’s grave and back towards the castle gardens.

As we passed by the burnt rose bush, I realized how stupid it was for me to blame them for my dad’s death. It’s just like Philip said, it was a one in a billion chance and my dad unfortunately betted on the wrong flower.

I know that I need to fix not just myself but any way that I have led this country.

And it’ll start with reversing the ban on roses.

Chapter Eighteen

PHILIP

My friends, Chloe and Louis, sat with me at the small table outside where the royal gardens were at.

“I never pictured myself being inside the castle. This is amazing!” Chloe said.

“I know right! You’re so lucky, Philip!” Louis replied.

“Thanks. It’s still a little weird to be here and not be working.” I said.

“You only live with Alaric during the week. But what about your flower shop? Are you going to sell it or give it to Bram?” Louis asked.

“Of course not! That shop is part of my family’s legacy. I’ll probably ask someone, maybe Bram, to move here permanently and look after the shop. I’ll just deal with the managerial stuff on the side.” I replied.

“Just expect to get busy being the king’s husband soon.” Chloe teased.

“I don’t know about that. We’ve only just slowly begun to move in. I think marriage is so far out of the question.”

Chloe slowly sipped her tea. “Still, it’s so easy to see that he’s smitten with you. I’d be on the lookout for a proposal some time soon.”

“For now, I’ll just be a supporting boyfriend. That seems to be my main job these past few weeks.” We all chuckled.

I looked down at my phone and saw it was now 13:30.

“Sadly, I need to end this chat. It was great to catch up with you guys.” I said.

“Anything for you, Phil. Are we still on for Saturday?” Louis asked.

“Sure. I’ll meet you there! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting to get to.” I said. We said our goodbyes and I entered the castle while my friends were escorted by a guard. I climbed the stairs and walked through the grand halls of the castle and made my way to Alaric’s office where I knocked on his door.

Three quick knocks and one louder one.

“Come in!” Alaric yelled. I carefully opened the wooden door and poked my head in.

“Are you clothed?” I asked.

“It was one time, Philip!” Alaric replied. I stepped in and closed, and locked, the door behind me.

“Chloe and Louis just left. Is it fine if I hang out with them on Saturday?” I asked Alaric.

“Why are you asking me, Philip? I’m not holding you hostage here. Just tell me where you want to go and I’ll send a car.”

“Got it.” I said. I walked over next to Alaric’s desk and looked at all his paperwork. “Do these words not bore you?” I asked.

“They’re actually quite interesting. I enjoy reading these.” He said.

“Have you tried reading something like, oh I don’t know, Percy Jackson or Harry Potter?” I jokingly asked.

Alaric looked at me. “I’m a professional. Not a child.” He stated.

“Whatever you say, your highness.” I patted his hair like he was a child. “Go ahead and finish your work.” I said.

I sat in the chair across from him and watched him work elegantly. He held his fountain pen in his right hand, meanwhile his left would occasionally stamp a document with a stamp that had the royal seal in red. His eyes would scan over documents quickly, taking in every word quickly.

After he finished, there was one final envelope left in a light blue folder in the center of the desk.

“You know, when you’re concentrating, your eyebrows look angry.” I said.

“What else are small details about me?” Alaric asked.

“When you’re thinking, your eyes dart left and right. When you’re ignoring a problem, they dart up and down. You also tap your foot when there’s too much noise in the room. And finally, whenever I know that you want to kiss, your hands start to reach for mine. Like right now.”

We both looked down as Alaric’s hand had slowly begun to reach outwards and towards me.

“Might as well, right?” He asked. I rolled my eyes and reached over the table, grabbing him by the collar and pulling him into a kiss. Alaric smiled into the kiss, shutting his eyes to get the best feeling out of it.

“Did that meet your daily needs for kisses?” I asked.

“No, I need a little more.” Alaric replied. This time, Alaric pulled me in, holding the sides of my face and diving into my mouth. His tongue danced with mine energetically. My hands grabbed his curls tightly, messing up his hair.

“Better?” I asked.

“Much better.” Alaric replied. We let each other go and sat back in our seats.

“So what’s that folder?” I asked, pointing at the light blue folder.

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I was proposing something and wanted you to check it.” He said. He slid over the folder to me.

“But why me? You know my grammar sucks. Don’t you have editors who fix these things?” I asked.

“I wanted your opinion. Just open it.” He said.

I lifted the folder and held it in my hand. There was a was sela with the royal seal on it. I broke the seal and lifted the tab. Inside was a piece of paper with writing. I checked it and noticed it was the exact same document used to create new laws.

I pulled out the paper and held it in my hands. I stared at the words, looked back up at Alaric, and back down at the document.

Reversal on The Ban of Roses

This bill will overrule the previous ban, which banned all flora of the rosa rubiginosa. Restoration projects will be created, which will help with bringing back all roses with the borders. Reparations will also be paid to individuals whose businesses or financial lives may have been affected by the previous ban.

His highness King Alaric will also issue an apology to the citizens in a live televised statement.

I read the bill and then looked back up at Alaric.

“You’re bringing back roses!” I excitedly said.

“Yeah, I am. I saw how immature it was for me to blame them for my father’s death.” Alaric explained.

“That’s amazing! So, can I bring them back into the castle?” I asked.

“Of course. There’s still so much we need to do to fix the ban.”

“We?” I asked.

“I want you to help me with the restoration process. You’re the best florist I know. Will you help me?” Alaric asked.

A huge smile spread upon my face.

“Of course I will, Alaric!” I leaned forward and encased Alaric in a deep hug, him struggling because I almost pulled him over the desk. “Yes! Yes, I’ll help you!”

“Okay okay okay! You’re eager!” Alaric said. I let go of him and he returned back to sit down on his chair. “We’ll need to fix a few small details. But, within a few months, we should be seeing roses back in the Kingdom of Magnoline.”

“I always knew you would have a change of heart. It was only a matter of time.” I said.

“It was all thanks to you. If you never came into my life, I never would have learned to grow out of my selfish ways. Thank you, Philip.” Alaric said, extending his hands and placing them on mine.

“You just needed someone to snap you out of it.” I said. “So does this mean you’ll start doing reading time to the children at the local school?” I asked.

“Slow down, I’m not that comfortable yet.” Alaric joked.

“Come on, Alaric! The kids have been dying to hear you read to them. Your mother has been doing it for so long. Give her a break!” I said to him.

“If it will make you shut up, sure. I’ll do reading time.” Alaric gave in.

“I have just the book for this!” I muttered to myself.

“We have that meeting right now. You’re joining me, right?” Alaric asked.

“Yes, I’m joining you.” I replied.

We both stood up from our seats. Alaric gathered his paperwork, including the new bill, and held them in his hands. I opened the office door and held it open for Alaric to walk out of. He stepped out and planted a kiss on my cheek.

“I love you.” He said. He stopped in his steps and his eyes bulged out of their head. I was too frozen in just stared at Alaric.

This is the first time any of us has ever muttered those words. None of us moved. Alaric’s face began to turn red and beads of sweat formed on his forehead.

I decided to break the silence.

“Did you say that?” I asked in a shaky voice.

“Y-Yes…” Alaric muttered. His eyes began to move down. Oh God, his thoughts are getting to him. He’s probably overthinking that he shouldn’t have said that or that I won’t reciprocate his feelings.

“I love you too!” I blurted out. The words came out naturally. Almost like I had been waiting to say them myself.

“You do?” Alaric asked, tears in his eyes.

I nodded aggressively. “Yes, I do!” I said.

Alaric dropped his papers on the floor and we both embraced each other in a hug and kiss. We kissed for a perfect moment. Our words were of genuine emotions.

“I love you, Philip!” Alaric muttered in my ear.

“I love you too, Alaric.” I muttered back. We split away and I couldn’t stop staring into his beautiful eyes. Eyes that once scared and annoyed me can now make me weak in the knees.

“We should get to that meeting.” Alaric said.

“Yeah, we probably should.” I replied. We both bent down and picked up the scattered paper.

“Let’s go, pretty boy.” Alaric said, holding out his hand for me to take. I grabbed his large hands and intertwined our fingers.

“On it, King Alaric!” I said. We skipped down the hall, knowing that nothing could stop us.

Alaric had his eyes on me the entire day, and not once did he ever look away. I love this man so much.

Chapter Nineteen

ALARIC

The soft grass provided a somewhat approvable bed for the both of us as we laid on our backs, staring up at the white clouds as they breezed by. The wind was blowing our hair and cooling down the sweat on our skin after we had fornicated on the grass. I turned to Philip, his green eyes staring up at the sky.

“You’re beautiful.” I said, aweing at his handsome looks.

“Me? You were literally Sexiest Man Alive this year.” Philip replied.

“Well, guess who else was with me during the photoshoot?” I teasingly asked, my fingers on his chest.

“I was only there because you begged me to.” Philip rolled his eyes. He sat up and stretched his arms.

“I’m guessing the grass wasn’t as soft as you imagined?” I asked.

“I think we should stick to hooking up inside the castle with linen sheets.” Philip rolled his head and cracked his neck. I sat up too and reached to put my coat over my bare chest.

My head turned to the bushes of roses that have been thriving for the past two months. Pink and red blooms were spotted throughout the bushes and a few bees buzzed around the flowers. The efforts to add back the roses has been a success so far. And it’s all thanks to Philip, who has been a tremendous help for me. In many ways.

“Did you used to sell roses when they were banned?” I asked Philip. His face turned red and he let out a small chuckle.

“Maybe.” He whispered.

“I’m not mad about it. Honestly, I find it curious that you were able to do that right underneath me. And that was before we started dating.” I said.

“I did sell roses. But you know my business: if I have the flower, I will supply it. And that’s what I did.” Philip replied.

“Can’t even be mad at you. If I was in your position I would have done the same.”

“Really?” Philip asked.

“Of course. You are passionate about flowers. It’s in your nature. You sold roses, even knowing that they were banned and you worked directly under me. That takes guts.” I said.

“I never would have pictured myself to be here, laying naked in the grass with the king next to me.” He said. “You were the thing I never knew I needed.”

“Same goes for you. I genuinely feel like I have become a better person since I’ve met you. Despite our disagreements in the past, you are the one of the few people that I tolerate.” I said.

Philip kissed me and felt my body with his warm hands.

“I love you, you son of a bitch.” He muttered.

“You too, you prick.” I replied. Philip split and drank some water from his bottle. I reached over and placed my crown back on my head. I stupidly smile, despite there being nothing for me to smile about.

“What’s got you happy?” Philip asked.

“Just, life, you know?” I replied.

“Well, this ‘life’ sounds amazing. I hope you keep smiling.” Philip said. He stood up and slipped on his shorts quickly. “I’ll be right back.” He said and walked over to the roses. I laid back and watched the clouds once again.

A few months ago, I would’ve loved to smash in Philip’s face. Now, I want to kiss his face and caress it in my hands. Feel his soft skin and stare into his beautiful green eyes.

A few minutes later, I turned and saw Philip walking back to me with something in his hands. I sat up as Philip kneeled down next to me. I finally saw what was in his hands. There was a makeshift crown made of small daisies. In the front, resembling a crown jewel, was a bright red rose.

“Take off your crown.” Philip said. I obeyed and removed my golden crown and lightly placed it on my lap.

“Is that for me?” I asked.

“Yes, dummy.” He chuckled. I leaned my head forward and presented him the top of my head. I felt him place the flower crown on my head and adjust it to fit me.

I looked back up and saw Philip smiling to himself, knowing he did a good job.

“How do I look?” I asked.

“Absolutely marvelous.” He said. I grabbed my crown on my lap and lifted it and placed it on Philip’s head. He was surprised by this, since I never let anyone touch my crown, let alone wear it.

“There, now you’re the King of Magnoline.” I said.

Philip touched the crown on my head. “And you’re the king of roses now.” He replied.

“Want to go inside and actually have sex somewhere comfortable?” I asked.

“As much as I love nature, that actually sounds like a good idea.” Phil replied.

We stood up as we quickly changed back into our clothes. I kept the flower crown on my head and Phil kept my crown on his head. I held his hand as we both walked back into the castle grounds together. We walked past my mother who was talking to someone.

“Alaric?” Mother asked. I turned and saw her looking at my crown on Phil’s head.

“Good afternoon, mother.” I said. Phil bowed to her.

“How was your um… time outside?” She asked. She’s walked in on us before so she knows what Phil and I get up to sometimes near the willow tree.

“It was great. But we are going to our room.” I said.

“Mhm. Definitely looks like you had a great time.” She touched the crown on my head and smiled to herself. “And you, Philip? I hope you’re not losing your sanity being with Alaric so much.”

“Mother!” I said.

“I’m doing good. No mental breakdown yet. Though, there’s still time for me to get one.” Phil nudged my shoulder.

“Oh, Alaric. I have that parcel for you. Just stop by my room later and I’ll give it to you.” Mother told me.

“I will be sure to do that.” I said. She turned and walked away to talk to someone else. Both Phil and I turned back and continued our walk to our bedroom.

“What’s the parcel she was talking about?” Phil asked.

“It is a faberge egg that was sent to me by a Russian friend.” I replied.

In reality, the parcel is a disguise. It is actually my mother’s engagement ring that my father gave to her when he first proposed to her. After months of dating Phil, I can proudly say that within a few more weeks, I shall propose to him in the best way I can think of.

In front of roses. And as part of tradition when the ruling monarch finds a partner, they will add a new small feature on the seal of the royal family. And for my design, it will include a small rose.

Who knew? That the one thing that I hated would be the thing that I now adore the most. Just like Philip himself. He is a rose. And absolute rose. A beautiful rose that blooms when he smiles and says ‘I love you.’ Despite his thorns, his beauty is what makes up for everything.

“Alaric? You’re staring again.” Phil knocked me out of my state.

“Sorry. I was thinking.” I said.

“I hope it’s about good things.” He said. He opened the bedroom door and grabbed me by my shirt and pulled me into the room.

“Woah! Slow down.” I said.

“Before we go to bed, how about we start in the shower?” Phil teased.

“Why not.” I replied. Phil removed my crown from his head while I removed my flower crown. We set them together on the head of a Greek statue that was next to us.

The two of us stripped off our clothing and ran to the bathroom shower, giggling while slapping each other on our skin.

While in the shower, the two of us cleaned each other and kissed each other, feeling each other. We did more kissing than actual cleaning. I lifted Phil in my arms and carried him to the bed, the both of us still wet.

“I love you, Alaric.” Phil said.

“I love you too, Phil. More than anything.”

My fingers traced on his ring finger. Soon, there will be a ring on this finger. He will be mine.

“Can we get started?” Phil asked.

“Just say the magic word.” I said.

“Do you mean ‘please’ or ‘come fuck this ass?’” Phil asked.

“Whichever one you like.” I replied.

“Then please come over her and fuck this ass.” Phil jokingly said.

I lunged forward and planted my lips on Phil’s lips.

I knew then that this is the life that is better for me. Not having my citizens fear me. Not being alone for the rest of my life. Instead, I chose to have someone by my side and not be alone. With Phil, a new world of emotions has opened for me.

And I can’t wait to see what else the world has in store for me and Philip.
